Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars piece of junk.......2007-04-27

I have a different iriver, the ifp 899 which was apparently made before iriver decided to save money every possible way they could, in order to maximize their profits. the T30 costs almost the same as the 899, but has all the worthwhile features taken out. You have hardly any control over the quality of the recording you make, way less ability to navigate--you name it and it is NOT in this machine. Not only that, but after a few months of VERY light use, it started making corrupt recordings which makes it a huge hassle to load them onto my computer and compress them. Plus, recorded files are ENORMOUS unless you use the "low" quality recording setting--and then their quality is rotten

5 out of 5 stars excellent sound quality.......2007-04-18

I've had my T30 for about 6 months and have used it extensively. I bought it because it has excellent sound quality. I listen to classical and acoustic music from reference quality recordings and always use high bit rate MP3s using good encoders (LAME 3.97). The earbuds it comes with are about average (crappy) but I use Etymotic ER-6 phones which are absolutely fabulous especially for classical music. The T30 has plenty of power to drive the ER-6 to levels beyond what my ears can handle.

The iRiver T30 sounds better than other MP3 players, both subjectively and objectively. I measured the frequency response, noise and distortion and found it to be excellent. With all EQs disabled, frequency response is within 0.5 dB of flat from 20Hz to 20 kHz and within 0.25 dB of flat for most of this range. Noise is below -90 dB and distortion is -70 dB or lower. This is as good as any MP3 player gets.

Playing high quality VBR files (LAME 3.97, VBR V0), the T30 goes for about 16 hours with a NiMH AAA 1000mAH rechargeable. Firmware upgrades are smooth & easy and it can operate in UMS mode which works on all operating systems and enables it to be a USB drive for generic file storage. It also records, which I haven't used much but is a nice plus.

1 GB isn't enough for anyone's entire music collection, but even with high quality MP3s it's more than enough for the 1 week business trips I take. I reload it with new music for each trip. It transfers files at about 3 MB / second so it takes about 5 minutes to transfer the entire 1 GB.

In short - it's compact and durable with the best sound quality you can get in an MP3 player. And it's inexpensive - can be found for well under $100 if you shop around.

5 out of 5 stars great sound.......2007-03-22

i orginally wanted a voice recorder to record my D&D group's 10 hr + long sessions, which demanded a larger size availabilty, with at least reasonable sound quality. I've taken this with me to a trip to visit my brother, and went with his band unit to some schools for an "intro to the instraments" type performance. i recorded the 3 performances i attended, and wow! resonable size files and excellent recording quality at just the medium setting. His band now wants a copy. My only real con for the entire product is that i wish i could use removeable media such as an SD card, but 1GB makes up for that (kinda), a rechargeable lithium battery would be nice too. the manufacurer (iRiver) has on their website the user manuals for all their products, and support, including the ones not found at their online store, but great for researching to find the product to best fit your needs

1 out of 5 stars Windows Media Player incompatibility.......2007-03-12

Incredibly frustrating. I was quite happy with my T30 until I recently upgraded my windows media player to version 11. It became IMPOSSIBLE to add any new music. There is a firmware upgrade on the iriver website, which I downloaded and installed three times. It just doesn't work! I managed to solve this problem only by rolling back to WMP 10.
BTW, I emailed iriver customer support about this problem and waited 17 days for a response.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing to Gloat About.......2007-01-06

I was looking for an easy to use, low capacity MP3 player that I could easily take with me anywhere. This player fit what I was looking for so I ordered it. Unfortunately, when I received the player it wasn't what I had hoped for. I will tell you the main reasons for this:

Software: I installed the driver easily and my pc easily detected the device. I ran into problems however, because I could not sync the device to my Windows Media Player. The player comes with Media Player however, it is an older version which didn't really agree with my pc for some reason.

Sound: The sound quality was rather poor especially with the radio.

Radio: The device did not pick up radio frequencies very easily even in areas where I know the frequency is strong.

Control Buttons and Menu Instructions: Not so easy to understand.
