Amazon.com Product Description
The multifunctional RCA RD2800 Lyra Jukebox combines a digital audio player with a 10 GB hard drive, capable of storing any computer file--from graphics to presentations. With its 10 GB hard drive you can store over 150 hours of high-quality audio in MP3 format. Using the new mp3PRO format, which features the same quality as MP3 but with higher compression and smaller file size, the Lyra Jukebox can store over 300 hours of music.

The mp3PRO format compresses standard audio tracks using two separate streams of data without significantly compromising sound quality. An mp3PRO file created at 64 Kbps will sound similar to an MP3 file created at 128 Kbps, and will be half the size.

The Lyra Jukebox features a backlit, multiline display, five equalizer presets, and nine play modes. It comes with a set of stereo headphones. You can also plug the Lyra Jukebox into your stereo using the included line-out cable, or in your car with the included cassette adapter.

Create digital audio files with the included MusicMatch Jukebox software, which also enables you to organize your music library on your PC and create playlists. The Lyra Jukebox connects to your PC via a 1.1 USB cable (included) and is compatible with Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, and XP.

The Lyra Jukebox is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and also includes a DC power adapter for use in the car.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Problems with the unit.......2006-04-06

My unit is about to become a very expensive portable drive. After putting about 4 or 5 gigs of music on the machine, many of the songs stopped functioning. Can't fix the problem and can't find any info on it. I won't buy any more RCA stuff either. Their web site and thompson's web site both don't help

1 out of 5 stars No Customer Support Anywhere.......2002-12-16

Unit functioned and sounded great for the first 4 months. After adding 5G of files the unit stopped functioning and the PC-based repair utility failed to fix the problem. Customer support information is scarce from the 3 or 4 web sites that the RCA site will direct you too. No phone numbers are listed anywhere. My player is dead and will have to be disposed of. I will check out the vendor's web site first before purchase from now on. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM RCA OR ITS SUBSIDIARIES.

2 out of 5 stars Still no mp3PRO support, but decent. Save up for an iPod........2002-10-27

I picked up one of these thinking it would have support for mp3PRO -- but I was sloppy and didn't read the fine print. It's "mp3PRO ready"... meaning it's ready for a firmware update that isn't done yet. Other than that it has been decent to me.

On the plus side:
* Lot of storage
* Doesn't need any software to load - just appears as a drive letter in Win2000. I love that.
* The accompanying headphones are better than most portables - still not truly high quality though.
* Decent price for the storage

On the minus side:
* No mp3PRO support yet
* System crashes a lot with seemingly average jostling - I can't walk to the post office with it in my pocket without the system crashing. It's ok if tossed in a backpack though.
* Audible interference buzz - when the drive light flashes, you can hear it causing a bit of buzz in the headphones.
* The USB port is pretty obscure - I could not find a cable that matches the super small port. If you want to use it at home and work, you either have to carry the cable each way or maybe order another one from RCA

Another point which I have noticed is common with hard-drive based MP3 players, but surpised me when I got this was that ther battery is build in - so there is no way to carry a spare. With 10 gigs of storage, I had visions of extended listening "in the field" but that's just not possible. I love my rechargable AAs but they don't help here.

I have since purchased a 10GB iPod -- also uses a built-in battery -- which is otherwise vastly superior to the RCA, but at a higher price point. I'd recommend saving up for the iPod if you want a high capacity MP3 player if you have the means - but, in a crunch the RCA is not too bad.

2 out of 5 stars An OK MP3 Player.......2002-10-04

I had higher expectations of this MP3 Player. The viewable screen for the songs doesn't show much at all so I had to rename all my songs. You annot scroll to another song while a song is playing. The software that works with the Player doesn't work, at all. When the battery is starting to run out, you finaly see a battery metter but then you have maybe 1 minute before it dies.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but ..........2002-09-30

It works fine and sounds fine, but the USB connection is WAY too slow. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by Firewire, but 10 Gigs going through USB 1.1 is so ... annoying.

The iPod, which costs just a little more, is far far more elegant and far far faster.
