Amazon.com Product Description
Packing 2,000 songs and a 10-hour battery into a stunning 6.5-ounce package, the Apple iPod is the smallest hard drive-based MP3 player available, about the size of a deck of cards. Just plug it into your Mac and all your iTunes songs and playlists are automatically downloaded into iPod at blazing FireWire speed.
The 10 GB hard drive stores up to 2,000 MP3 song files (at 160 Kbps encoding rate) and also doubles as disk storage for applications and other files. A high-output (60-mW) amplifier provides CD-quality sound with a wide dynamic range, from deep, pulse-pounding bass to sharp, crystal-clear highs.
In addition to its 10 GB hard drive, iPod has a 32 MB memory cache. The cache is made up of solid-state memory, meaning that it has no moving parts, so it's not affected by movement of the device. Skip protection on the iPod works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache.
The iPod has a large, high-quality liquid crystal display (LCD) for viewing up to six lines of text. And the LCD features a white-light-emitting diode (LED) backlight for clear visibility in low-light situations--indoors or outdoors. Pocket-size and just 6.5 ounces, it weighs appreciably less than the stack of CDs it can store music from.
Featuring Apple's award-winning iTunes 2 software, the iPod can synchronize with newly added music files and playlists. Simply plug the iPod back into your Mac and the changes are automatically updated in seconds. And with iTunes 2, you can rip MP3s, create playlists, and burn custom CDs all from one simple interface.
Its rechargeable lithium battery is charged using the FireWire cable when connected to your Mac. You can also recharge the iPod using the included FireWire cable and AC adapter when you're on the go.
The iPod supports MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR), WAV, and AIFF files, and is firmware upgradable. To use the iPod with your Mac you'll need a FireWire port and you must be running either Mac OS 9.2.1 (or later) or Mac OS X v10.1 (or later). The iPod is not compatible with Windows operating systems.
It comes with earbud-style headphones, a FireWire cable, power adapter, and CD-ROM with iTunes 2. It's backed by a 90-day limited warranty.

Product Description
Apple presents iPod - the first MP3 player to pack a countless number of songs and 10 hours of battery life into a stunning package you can literally take everywhere. It's your entire music collection. With no moving parts, the iPod's touch-sensitive scroll wheel is less vulnerable to dust, dirt or sand and more durable. The touch-sensitive scroll wheel is designed to retain its crisp feel throughout the lifespan of your iPod. There's even a clicker that makes a tiny clicking sound when the scroll wheel is moving.Small though it is, the iPod packs a lot of storage. The number of songs it holds depends on the compression rate you choose. At a 160Kbps compression rate (the default setting for encoding MP3s in iTunes), 5GB equals approximately 1, 000 songs, or about 100 CDs. That's how big it is on the inside. And with that much space, you might also find yourself storing documents, files and applications on your iPod in FireWire disk mode. iPod's rechargeable lithium polymer battery gives you 10 hours of continuous playback. In a hurry to get it recharged? Fast-charge the battery to 80% of capacity in an hour, and get it fully recharged in three hours. With an industry-leading 20 minutes of skip protection, iPod keeps playing without missing a beat. iPod has a 32MB solid-state memory cache, meaning that it has no mechanical or moving parts. Skip protection works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache, so your iPod is not affected by sudden movements. The 10GB and 20GB iPod models include a clip-on wired remote control that lets you fast-forward or rewind a track, play, pause and adjust volume using just one hand. They also include a designer carrying case with belt clip that protects your iPod from the elements and lets you clip it to your belt, backpack or purse.Customer Reviews:
I love it.......2003-04-30
I have had the ipod for eight months now, and it is still working perfectly well, showning just how durable it is (i have put it through quite a bit). Also, the controls are incredibly easy to learn and understand, even for the technically inept. another thing that I really like about the ipod, other than the sheer quantity of music that it holds, is the size of the screen, as well as the backlight, which is very bright. The large screen makes it wonderfully easy to see all of the information about the song. The final thing that I really love about the ipod is the fact that you canupgrade the software that it uses whenever apple comes out with a new version of the software.
Factor in the cost of new headphones.......2003-04-04
No, it's not a line from Star Trek. Rather, it's the first thing you'll need to do when you unpack your new iPod: throw away the supplied headphones and buy a decent pair.
Although Apple says the 'New iPod headphones are smaller in size, with new Neodymium transducer magnets for enhanced bass response, smoother midrange transitions, and accurate high-end reproduction' I personally found them uncomfortable to wear, and, more to the point, poor in sound quality.
Good headphones will add immensely to your satisfaction as an iPod owner. Be prepared to buy them!
On the plus side, you'll get the hang of using an iPod in about 5 minutes. (It really is possible to use it with just one hand.) And if you have a Mac-iTunes-iPod system set-up, updating your digital music collection is a breeze. (Windows users now have the same ease of use, apparently.) The iPod had a battery life problem which has now been solved, although (I haven't actually timed mine) I doubt you'll get 10 hours playback from a single charge, as claimed.
What about the sound? Hardly a minor issue for a music player, after all.
Apple's copywriters (a group not, on the whole, given to understatement) claim that '...(the iPod's) high-output (60-mW) amplifier provides CD-quality sound with a wide dynamic range. The result? Deep, pulse-pounding bass and sharp, crystal-clear highs.'
Ummmmm...yes and no.
The iPod provides a good, balanced sound for most types of music, with clear (not too trebly) highs. Light jazz and acoustic guitar sound pretty good. However, its bass does lack punch to some extent. (The built-in equaliser doesn't really help.) A Sony Minidisc player (or, if you want to step back into the Jurassic analog era, even a Sony Walkman) provides much punchier, crisper sound, but then again, you don't get to carry 2,000 songs with you.
Pros: Very ease to use; reliable. Clean interface.
Cons: Supplied headphones are a waste of space. Wimpy bass; struggles with some genres of music. Battery not user-replaceable.
Those Problems with battery life have been fixed!!.......2003-03-24

10 Gig Ipod (mac).......2003-02-16
I have 123 albums( 1775 songs) on my Ipod with 36.9 MB of space left. If I had a larger music selection I would go for the 20 Gig Ipod.
Overall I am very happy with this item

Cons: Occasionally crashes
For all those people that say by a cheaper mp3 player I used to have the iRiver, and I through it out of my window 1 day because it was so terrible, trust me the ipod is the best designed and for the price you are paying you get more songs.
