Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing product.......2004-04-25

This product is truly amazing.I put in a lot of thought before actually bying it but it is worth every penny. Its best feature is that it doesn't require any type of software whatsoever.Just plug it in and XP recognises it as an external drive so just drag-and-drop files (at super-fast speeds). The sound quality is is great although i would recommend bying a pair of decent headphones instead of using the earphones it comes with.FM reception is also perfect and recording couldn't be any easier with the internal mic and the Line/Optical In/Out ports.Battery life is also a great asset of this player. I load music to it almost every day and listen for about 1.5 hrs and the player can last for 5 days. That's crazy considering that loading music consumes a lot of battery since the player is connected to the pc.Therefore, in terms of pure listening, i think it can last for about 12-13 hrs.The only drawback i found is the way it categorizes songs.Currently the player can only categorize (artist, album, song, genre) mp3 files and since the vast majority of my files are WMA finding a song could potentially be hard at times if u have a very big collection(the songs are, however, categorized alphabetically in each folder regardless of their type). iRiver can probably fix that with a firmware upgrade in the future. Other than that the player is a top gadget!
P-S:It might be worth considering bying the 20G version if u can find it at a reasonably higher price

5 out of 5 stars Expensive but has features others don't.......2004-02-15

The iHP 100 is more expensive as compared to other Gb jukebox players but that's because you get a little more for your money. A backlit remote, built-in FM tuner, multiple platform support (MP3, Ogg Vorbis, and unprotected WMA), and a recorder. It also doesn't restrict you to a certain bitrate (e.g., the Archos Studio series require 128kbps to avoid skips during playback). While other players offer some of these features, most don't offer them all. But the kicker for me was the Digital Optical input. With this, I can plug the iHP into my home theater system and record tunes and soundtracks digitally directly from my DirecTivo, DVD, or CD player.

If you want to do PDA functions on your MP3 player then buy an iPod (or better yet, a Sony Clie). But if you want a compact harddrive player, with the drag-and-drop functionality of an Archos, the IHP 100 is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars greatest x-mas present.......2004-01-30

greatest x-mas present that i ever got! love it for traveling and taking (as another reviewer put it) nearly my whole music collection with me. love the long battery life and the earphone adapter, i don't really like those that you have to put in your ear, so i use my better ones that i already owned but didn't work, now they do!

5 out of 5 stars iPod is No Competition to the iRiver.......2003-12-13

I did *tons* of research on MP3 players before I bought the iHP-100. Clearly it and the 20 gig iHP-120 are the best players on the market right now, followed by the iPod.
Pros:
- 16 hours of battery life (3G iPod's get 8 hours)
- Same size as the iPod and smaller than Zen
- *NO SOFTWARE REQUIRED TO ADD MUSIC TO THE PLAYER* almost no MP3 players have this capability. You plug the iRiver into any USB port and you can drop music or files onto the drive. That's it. No installing extra software, nothing. iPod and Zens both need extra software to function
- LCD remote control included (extra on the iPod)
- FM radio (extra on the iPod)
- Simple interface
- Digital recording (and digital output)
- Active support and updates from iRiver, they just added OGG music file format support, one of the few players that can play OGG files

Cons: price, it's not the cheapest player on the market, but I think you get what you pay for here

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2003-11-24

I did a lot of research on hard-drive based players (in comparison to MP3 players which don't hold nearly as much space), trying to find the perfect one - this is a huge chunk of money we're talking about here! I was going to buy the iPod, but after reading a few reviews on how it isn't *always* compatible with PCs, which is a chance I couldn't take, I decided on getting this entirely PC-compatible iRiver jukebox. I love it! Aesthetically, it's very sleek looking and I love the silver / dark silver / blue screen contrast. More importantly, it is so easy to get running - I had about a hundred albums, tons of other MP3s, and audiobooks loaded just a few hours after I got the product. It would have been much faster, but that had to do with my USB port; I'll talk about that in a second. Navigation takes a little time to get used to, but once you do, it becomes very easy and intuitive. You can load all types of files on it, from MP3s to WMAs, and even just regular files since it can be used as just storage space as well as a music player. You also get an FM tuner on it with *excellent* reception and voice recording, which I haven't tried out yet. IRiver included tons of accessories - a backlit remote control with 4-line display, headphones, carrying case, installation software CD, AC adapter, USB 2.0 cable, line-in cable, user manual, and warranty card.

As great as this device is, I did have just a few little problems that aren't really big deals. Still, I'll share them anyway. For one thing, even though a USB 2.0 cable is included, if you don't have the USB 2.0 *port,* it won't make a difference. However, that's more of the buyer's problem, not iRiver's, and my little 1.0 is sufficient enough for me. Also, I should have sprung for the 20 GB jukebox - believe me, though 10 GB seems like a lot of space, it really isn't. Especially if you're loading high-quality music with high bitrates. One last thing, the included headphones are kind of dinky and I'll probably have to buy my own pair later.

All in all, a five-star product which I recommend to anyone who's looking for a hard-drive based music player.
