Amazon.com Product Description
The Zen Micro digital music player from Creative Labs packs an incredible 5 GB of storage capacity into a shell small enough to sit comfortably in your jeans pocket. It also rides nicely in your hand, with a palm-fitting profile and thumb-friendly front-panel controls. It's a bit shorter than an Apple iPod Mini, yet its rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides 12 hours of continuous playback--50 percent more than iPod Mini's. The Zen Micro is compatible not merely with MP3s and WAV files, but with WMA as well. Toss in USB 2.0 connectivity and you're looking at one spiffy portable music player.
But playing isn't all the Zen Micro does. You can use it to receive FM radio (with 32 station presets to keep your favorites at the ready), and to record, either from the radio or from live sources such as voice dictation or lectures using the Zen Micro's built-in condenser microphone.
Trimmed in a luminescent blue glow and with easily visible backlit buttons, this stylish black player holds up to 1,250 songs (83 hours) at 128 kbps or 2,500 songs (166 hours) at lower-fidelity 64 kbps (MP3/WMA)--that's a solid week's worth of music listening, never playing the same song twice. Compatibility with Microsoft's WMA compressed-audio format grants access to over 2 million downloadable songs offered promotionally or for sale online.
Perhaps the Zen Micro's coolest attribute is its DJ feature, which will shuffle not only all the songs you've loaded or all the songs in a given album, but also, at your discretion, only the tracks you listen to most, or only those you rarely hear, taking the work out of selecting your favorites or hunting out all the music you're still getting to know.
Zen Micro's rechargeable battery is easy to replace. |
For navigation, the device features a vertical, linear touchpad designed to make searching through songs or playlists easy, quick, and fun. The unit's blue, 160 x 104-pixel, electroluminescent LCD shows key functions and song details at a glance, and you can even customize the main menu to keep right at your fingertips the features that matter most to you.
Another of the Zen Micro's handy features is its personal organizer. You'll never forget an important anniversary with the onboard calendar, and it also includes a to-do list and a contacts list, all of which sync seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook (Outlook thus required for use of these features). In addition, the device offers a sleep timer and alarm so you can drift off to sleep to the strains of one playlist and wake to a completely different one.
The Zen Micro's removable battery is easy to swap with another fully charged battery (additional batteries sold separately), extending your listening by a half-day per swap.
What's in the Box
The Zen Micro player, stereo earbud headphones, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a USB 2.0 cable, an installation CD, a quick-start guide, and Creative MediaSource software.
Customer Reviews:
Good until..........2007-03-16
I bought my Zen Micro about a year ago. I loved it because it had great features at a great price. The music is pretty good and it holds a lot. The radio is good once you get it to tune. The way it is designed is great and the voice recording is useful.
A few weeks ago though, my problems with it started. If you charge the battery when it is half-way, it makes the battery last a LOT less. It started dieing very soon. I tried to charge it, but when you take out the battery and turn it on it goes to a recovery screen. You can't get out of it easily. It is helpful but never delete the firmware. It says you can reload it onto the player through a USB plug, but you can't easily at least. Since it was more than 60 days old, they wouldn't let me talk to them over the phone. Also, it was more than a year ago so they wouldn't even help me by e-mail. They left me with a small "knoledge database" that didn't help at all. They did say though that for $12.99 you could get a 30 minute session with a "Creative tutor." I took a search to finally find the phone number. Finally I got in contact with a person and told him my problem. He told me that I could send it in and get it repaired for $60 to $100 plus $12.99 for shipping back and whatever I pay for shipping to get there. Disgusted, I decided not to pay, and just got a new player.
So I am here to tell you that while the Zen Micro might be good, the service is absolutely terrible. Even Apple which I heard doesn't have great service has better service than Creative.

Don't buy! Fine product with bad hardware problems........2007-01-20
I got this when it first came out and like everyone else, I had the headphone jack problem. Creative wanted me to pay 90 some dollars to get it fixed. Yeah ight, for a major defect that was THEIR problem and if you weren't under warrent then too bad?!?! Not only that but the software wouldn't let me well do anything. I had to go install a new media center just to sync music. This would have been the Ipod killer if it didn't have crap service and hardware problems. Don't waste your money on Creative.
Good Initially but Won't Work Now.......2007-01-18
I loved this little guy when I first bought it (about 18 months ago). Now, it won't connect via USB (maybe one time out of 10) and it freezes up when playing. I've tried everything to clean it up and correct the problem, but it still freezes. Sadly, I'll be buying a replacement from somebody else because I liked the software and easy of use.
Unusable ... but good while it lasted........2007-01-06
As with everyone else, I have to wiggle and jiggle my headphone jack to get it even remotely close to working. This makes it not only impossible to use when running, but even when just walking or moving at all. For the same price you could get an iPod or better.
Disappointed - good product but very unreliable.......2007-01-03
As many other reviews have agreed, I liked mine until it broke - in two ways. Same headphone problem as others, but that was nothing compared to the total meltdown it then experienced. Now I can't even turn it on, and I've only owned it 11 months. I liked the space, features, setup, etc. but that makes me all the more sad that it's hopelessly broken. Try another brand, because if you buy this one you will just end up buying the other brand in a few months anyway.

Customer Reviews:
ZEN MALFUNCTIONS A LOT!.......2007-06-04
I'd rate the Zen Micro 0 stars, but it isn't available. I used to like this player; it was cheaper and smaller than a regular Ipod. The first problem I had was the headphone jack. I had to send it out to get fixed. As soon as I got it back it worked okay. A couple of days later, I noticed that it kept freezing on me. I had to open up the back and take the battery out almost every time I turned on the player.
All I have had was problem after problem with this mp3 player and the customer service sucks! They charge you for the call and then refund you if you have to send your creative product back to them for repair.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!!!
No problems for us..........2007-03-06
Maybe we got lucky or something, but our unit never had the headphone jack issue. It never froze up, or quit working. The sound was good and the unit performs as well today as when we got it. After flashing it with the latest system software, it worked well with Windows Media Player, but didn't like the Creative sofware anymore. There is some updated Creative software for it, but since WMP was working so well we decided not to mess with it. One star deducted for the smaller non-color screen that's hard to read with my 50+ year old eyesight. No regrets on purchase. Upgrading to a Zen Vision M with HUGE color screen!
Unit froze constantly and died.......2006-10-01
I really loved this player-when it worked right, that is. Or should I say was. The player froze all the time, usually atleast once a day. I didn't really mind, many of the micro drive players tend to do this seeing as they have mini harddrives in there. All I would do is pop off the back cover slide the battery out just enough for the pins to release off of the battery contacts and restart the player. I got so good at doing this I could do it while running haha. One day while leaving to jog I turn the player on and it freezes. No biggie I figure. Go through the normal routine with the battery etc etc. I go to turn the unit back on and DEAD. This is where I stand with it now. I lost my receipt so I cant return it to Creative for service. I really loved this player. The only problem I had was the freezing. The thing I liked the most about it is that it was LOUD. If you like music loud this is the player.
PROS:
Media explorer interface was good. Loading songs onto player was easy.
Sound and volume good even with supplied earbuds.
CONS:
Unit contantly froze and eventually died.
A Good Music Player.......2006-09-27
Though outdated now in terms of space, functionality and cost...this player has worked perfectly for me. It's Screen interface is easy to use, even with the clumsy hands I've got and it still has enough weight in it to make it blindly useable (ie. picking it up while doing something else like driving and changing songs without ever having to look at it). I'd maybe guess that Apple's iPOD Nano could do the same thing, but as little as it weighs, I'd be afraid a gust of wind might blow it away, lol. In fact, it's jsut perfect size for me to switch albums while I'm riding a bike, but you should REALLY practice a LOT if you're gonna try that lil' trick....don't say I didn't warn you! It survived a 19 inch fall to concrete with no problems....but I might've been lucky. 'Sides since I'm a mostly happy user of Windows Computers, it didn't make sense to buy something that doesn't support Outlook. The radio recieves "decently" and the voice recorder is swell too. Sound quality is good to me, but I'm not very picky on that subject so someone used to more might be disappointed. My only gripe is I couldn't find the color I wanted at Wal-Mart...Orange would've been interesting:) Battery life is decent, but like most other players I've had it seems to require the light off and minimal changing of albums and the like. I average 5 hours myself.
Only 3 stars because of certain malfunctions........2006-03-11
My boyfriend bought 2 of these, one for him and myself. After three months, I did not have a single problem. However, his developed a firmware problem last week, deleted all of his files (including those from CDs he lost), and refused to be updated. He called tech support, but before he mailed it in, the problem resolved itself and he was able to update the firmware (but unfortunately did not recover his files).
Now today, when he turned it on, the headphone jack loosened up, and the sound cut in and out. He called tech support yet again, got the RMA number, and will mail it out next week.
Again, I haven't had a single problem with mine. They're the same exact player, color, and battery, and mine takes more abuse because I use it as a 1 GB partitioned flash drive. It has fallen on the floor a number of times and only received a small scratch on the screen. This is my first experience with a hard drive-based mp3 player, since up to this point I was using a Creative MuVo Nomad (flash drive based).
I think it depends on a person's luck with products like these. If you've never had a problem with electronics malfunctioning, there's a good chance you'll love this player.
Final note: BUY THE CREATIVE PROTECTION PLAN with this player. And keep your receipt. Just in case.
