Take a large chunk of your music library with you wherever you go with the nicely compact and incredibly stylish Philips HDD1630 GoGear digital audio player, which has an integrated 6 GB hard drive that can store up to 3,000 MP3 and WMA files (including DRM protected Plays For Sure WMA files from online stores and subscriber services). You can also show off your favorite photos to family and friends on the 1.5-inch backlit color LCD (128 x 128 pixels, 65 thousand colors, 7 lines of text) with the built-in photo viewer (compatible with JPEG image files). You can choose to see your pictures in thumbnail, full screen or slideshow mode and you can listen to music while browsing through your pictures.

It's easy to find files with Philips' SuperScroll navigation. The double action search keys allow easy speed control when scrolling through large libraries. You can choose to move through your playlist one song at a time or just press and hold down a little harder to scroll more swiftly to your desired track. This GoGear player also features a voice recorder via the mono microphone (files saved in WAV format), an FM tuner (with FM radio recording functionality), 5-band customizable equalizer with numerous presets (including classic, jazz, hip-hop, electronica, lounge, and more), 32 MB buffer memory, and SRS WOW bass enhancement.

It connects to PCs with Windows XP (SP1 and above) via ultra-fast USB 2.0 (not compatible with Mac OS). It's powered by an internal lithium-ion battery that provides up to 17 hours of continuous play when fully charged. It has a 1-hour fast charge time (charging the battery up to a 70 percent capacity), or a 4-hour full charge time.

The PlaysForSure designation ensures compatibility with Windows Media Player 10 and Windows XP. Using the Windows Media player, you can easily manage music on your GoGear digital audio player and auto-synchronize your PC music collection. I was torn between buying the Phillips GoGear and an IPOD. I chose the Phillips because it was less expensive and I liked the looks. I really like the way the Phillips performs, I've got it loaded with about 1000 songs. The only complaint I have, and that's why I gave it only 3 stars, is that my battery only lasts about 3 hours. It seems like even though the player is off, it's using up power. I have even charged it overnight and the power still runs out. Maybe the one I have is defective. Other than that the buttons are easy to use, sometimes a little too touchy.

Buy an MP3 player not a brand.......2007-04-18

Save your money and buy the GoGear. It's a very good buy.

A pretty good mp3 player.......2007-04-01

I bought this mp3 player about a year ago, and its been a pretty good one so far. It has excellent picture quality and the scrolling bar in the middle is very nice. I have 2 complaints about it.

1. I have had to send it back because when i turned it on, it gave me an error message and i couldn't do anything on it. After they sent me a new one it worked just fine.

2. Once you put a lot of songs on it (close to 1,000 or so) it starts to perform slowly. For example if i choose to play a song, it will take at least 5 seconds to start playing, and then another 20 seconds to load up the songs information. And it gets really annoying.

All in all i think it is a pretty good mp3 player for the price, but i would suggest (if u dont want an ipod) to get Creative because that is the other mp3 player i had, and i am thinking of getting another one from Creative.

Love it when it works (aka MOST of the time).......2007-03-08

I've had my Go Gear for over a year and most of the time its wonderful. The battery lasts me all day, sound is great, no problem with navigation. Then there are the times when it acts up...For some reason, and I can't identify any cause, there are times when the battery doesn't charge fully and when navigating back to the main menu doesn't work smoothly.
There have been a few times when the player has frozen up, but these are pretty rare and were resolved with the soft reset (pwr + up vol).
The rubber cover that comes with the player is all but useless, so I wish I had purchased the control case from the start so my player wouldn't have the few scratches it has on the front. With the control case, the player is fully protected and can be hung on a belt loop or pack.
Over all, I really like this player. It has been a great alternative to the iPOD empire and I would buy Philips again.

Had to send for repairs twice.......2007-03-04

This player has a problem that requires it to be sent for service to the repair center. Occasionally, on a power down, and then the subsequent power on, the Philips GOGEAR will become frozen with the advise to plug your GOGEAR to your PC. And when you attach the GOGEAR to the PC the Device Manager will not recognize the MP3 player. Therefore you cannot repair the GOGEAR. A soft reset will not work (power button and volume + button at same time). You call customer service and they are helpful, but the only thing that you can do in this situation is send the GOGEAR to the repair center. This is the second time this has happened to me. Once with the PHILIPS 6 GB HDD1630/17 and now the second time with the replacement model they sent me HDD1635/17. The only reason I give this item 2 stars is because when it works it is great. And the customer service representative is helpful. But that being said it is frustrating having to repair the items. I was under warrenty and have not had to pay anything outside the shipping and handling to get the GOGEAR to the repair center. But I am not sure I would pay anymore money on an item that is cronically breaking.
