Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Should get a ZERO.......2006-11-21

Don't buy this company's products....They SUCK!!!!!
Pick from a more competent company to do business with.
Unsuspecting buyers avoid this company at all costs because I have NEVER seen
this level of incompetence with a company. It's the customers that allow them
to exist ....but they seem to forget that most important concept.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I Wanted.......2006-07-17

If I had to do it over again I'd probably go with the 40G version just because of the problems others have had with the 80G. With that said though I've had no problems whatsoever. I've had mine about 8 months now. My main use is recording TV shows and then using the Archos on trips. The 2nd use would be as an MP3 player and I also use it as a portable hard drive.

If this product were released right now I'd probably have to give it 4 stars, but considering it's almost 2 years old now I see it worthy of being 5 stars. Archos is way ahead of the competition in this market.

Problems -
All the problems I've had are very minor.
1.) The battery life is not great. It's good for about 2 hours of video.
2.) The screen is difficult to clean. Fingerprints wouldn't be such an issue if there was a case that had a clear cover so you could see the screen.
3.) My biggest problem is with the playlists for music files. It's not easy to use. I never did figure out how to add a song to a playlist without creating a new playlist. I ended up taking all my songs off and organizing them in folders and then putting them back on the Archos.

I won't list all the great things about Archos as I think they're pretty well known.

4 out of 5 stars AV400 series rocks, AV500 series is complete crap.......2006-07-14

I used and abused my AV420 for over a year and never had any troubles with it. My AV420 went on every backpacking trip I went on, was exposed to drastic temperature and humidity changes, and still kept rocking! I was rather fond of it, seeing all the weenie iPod users with their limited media playing abilities. Whenever I showcased it to an iPod owner, they quickly realized their iPod was inferior in almost everyway, and wished they went the way of the AV400.

At the time of purchase I added an instore no questions asked warranty, which one day I decided to make use of, for an addional 10Gb of space on the AV500. This was a horrible mistake. I have had to format the AV500 drive about every three weeks since the time of purchase. This was not due to a poor disconnect from a PC, like I have seen other posts state to watch out for. This happened while listening to it using headphones.

Due to the problems with my AV500, I found the hard way that Archos has possibly the worst customer support I have dealt with. The responses you get are insulting at best, and are in no way helpful. Such a shame for such a great product like the 400 series Archos DVR/PVR.

1 out of 5 stars YOU MAY SORELY REGRET BUYING ANYTHING ARCHOS.......2006-03-11

Too bad there's not a zero star rating, because they deserve it.

That is, when your Archos breaks someday - as it surely will.

Their customer support and tech support are as close to the bottom of the barrel as you can get. Maybe even under the barrel.

Out of about 10 attempts to call them in the first week I tried to get ahold of them, 9 of those attempts disconnected me after being on hold for 5 minutes or so. That was back in January.

When I did reach someone, the retard couldn't spell worth a damned and completely failed to listen to my instructions to correctly spell my name, address or anything else and gave me a number that was supposedly an RMA that wasn't and told me that someone would contact me about an estimate on repairing my unit.

Well, I never got a call or an e-mail from Archos at all.

I responded to an e-mail I got as a result of filling out the form on their site, but they wouldn't work with me on e-mail and told me I had to call them. Well I went through another bout of not being able to reach them on the phone. When I did reach them, they promised someone would call me back with an estimate and told me that my RMA number was different than the number that was given to me initially.

Another two weeks went by an I managed to reach someone on the phone who finally sent me the RMA form. I corrected a bunch of gross misspellings, and packed and shipped the unit to them.

A WHOLE MONTH GOES BY and I hear nothing. I call them again and find out that they don't even know where my unit is. Then I yelled at them on the phone and told them they need to have someone call me ASAP. WELL, I finally got a call back for once. They can't repair my unit because they no longer have parts for it (which is fair), so I told them to just send it back to me (I can salvage the HDD out of it at least). A week later, I get an e-mail from UPS and it's completely showing my address as the screwed up one that the idiot I first spoke to two months ago put into their system. Now I have to call UPS next week just to make sure I get my old unit back.

Geez, I cannot imagine worse customer service than Archos'.

They plainly suck.

Please don't torment yourself by buying their stuff.

2 out of 5 stars AV480 is great, except............2006-03-10

After I did a firmware upgrade, I have had issues with the 480 not remembering my last settings when I turn it off. I send it in to their customer service, that's where the nightmare begins.

I get an email asking for proof of purchase (which UPC code counts for most companies), they require something with date of purchase (real handy for a B-day present) and are not swayed by the logic that it's been out for a year, maybe it falls within the 1 year requirement on the warranty.

I ask for a manager to call me back, that never happens.

I finally call back after 2 weeks and get a manager, he tells me that it will get sent back immediately.

I call back 2.5 weeks later, still hasn't been shipped, no one knows what's going on.
