Apple 60 GB iPod photo
Apple 60 GB iPod photo
Product Description
From the Manufacturer
A delight for the ears. A feast for the eyes. Though it's no bigger than a pack of playing cards and weighs in at just over 6 ounces, iPod photo delivers a one-two sensory punch, letting you carry an entire library of your favorite music (up to 15,000 songs) or enough photos (as many as 25,000) to fill nearly 200 slide trays or cover nearly 5,000 square feet of wall space. Got a really big den?
| iPod photo displays 25 full-color thumbnails at a time, which you can scroll through the same way you scroll through song titles. | The new iPod photo features a razor-sharp LCD display that lets you see your photos in vivid color--65,536 colors, to be exact. And with its built-in backlighting, you'll be able to admire those photos indoors or out. Take Your Photos for a Spin Like its famous siblings, iPod photo features the touch-sensitive Apple Click Wheel that's the envy of the industry. You'll use it to navigate iPod photo's new menu. Now in living color, it's easier to read than ever. That's thanks in part to the clarity of the display--it offers a resolution of 220 by 176 pixels--and in part to the new Myriad typeface. Spin the wheel to Music, and you can scroll effortlessly through dozens of playlists, hundreds of albums, or thousand of songs. Or highlight photos. iPod photo displays 25 full-color thumbnails at a time. And you can scroll through them the same way you scroll through song titles--quickly. Just spin the wheel to see more. And when you see a photo you'd like displayed all by its lonesome, just click the center button and voilà! No one will have to say "cheese" as long as you have iPod photo around. Whether you're listening to tunes or checking out photos, you're sure to be all smiles. |
| Get Brownie Points for Sharing If you'd like everyone else to smile right along with you, iPod Photo makes it easy. Sure, you could let them take the Click Wheel for a spin themselves, but here's a way to get extra points for style. Use the included AV cable to connect iPod photo to a projector or TV. You can mesmerize friends and family with a glorious multimedia experience, offering them a breathtaking slideshow accompanied by the music you already have on your iPod photo. Of course, you get to choose the songs, albums, or playlists. And talk about smart--iPod photo optimizes your photos to fit on a standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) TV. iTunes 4.7: Your Photo Passport Wondering how you're going to get all your digital photographs into iPod photo? iTunes 4.7. The new version lets you import your images directly into iPod photo from a folder on the hard drive of your Mac or PC. Spent time organizing your photos using iPhoto on a Mac or either Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 on a PC? iTunes 4.7 rewards your diligence by importing the albums you've created in iPhoto or the collections you've created in Album or Elements. You'll be able to choose them from the Photos menu on iPod photo. | |
Wait, there's more. iPod photo features even more robust autosync capabilities. Now, in addition to offering the industry's best music syncing, iTunes offers stellar photo syncing as well. Update your photo collection by adding images or creating new albums, and the next time you connect iPod photo to your Mac or PC using the included FireWire or USB 2.0 cables, iTunes 4.7 will automatically synchronize your photo collection.
And did we mention that iTunes 4.7 also autosyncs album art? It's true. The album art downloaded when you purchase music from the iTunes Music Store is transferred to iPod photo along with the music. So while iPod photo plays your tunes, you can enjoy the album art--in color, of course--on the Now Playing screen.
Enjoy Improved Battery Life

Your iPod library can now contain new iPod games, feature films, and up to 20,000 songs.
|
The same great iPod interface and ease of use that goes great in any hand.
|
With all your music at your fingertips, you may never want to stop listening. Lucky thing your iPod plays audio for hours and hours, or if you'd rather watch, you can feast your eyes on movies and TV shows for several hours without draining your battery. And you can count on the iPod to help you pack light. It is almost hard to explain exactly how 80 GB of storage can fit into an iPod that's the same size as the 60 GB model before it. However it happened, it means you can carry more music and video absolutely anywhere you go. And with a 60-percent brighter screen, the vibrant display gives your album art, photos, and video extra oomph. As always, iPod makes finding what you want to hear a breeze. Plus, a new interface lets you search your iPod using the patented Click Wheel. And if you're a fan of live albums, classical works, or anything that sounds best when it is played continuously, iPod supports gapless playback that seamlessly transitions from one song to another.
Music, Movies and TV Shows
Finding and playing music on your iPod is simple. Use the Click Wheel to adjust volume, navigate songs, or browse the Music menu by artists, composer, album, song, genre, or playlist. Want to mix things up? Simply click Shuffle Songs. iPod makes your music look as good as it sounds, thanks to its big, bright color display. Album art appears alongside your songs in the Now Playing screen, so you can see your music as you play it. After all, iPod loves music as much as you do.
Now you can watch a movie while waiting in line for tickets to one. Download movies from the iTunes Store, then sync them to your iPod to watch anywhere, anytime. The iPod's gorgeous display--now 60-percent brighter--makes your movies pop. And thanks to improved video playback time, iPod keeps you entertained for several hours--even longer if you reduce brightness using the new brightness control.
As for television programs, there's always something good on iPod. Browse thousands of episodes of your favorite TV shows on the iTunes Store, buy them for just a couple dollars each, then sync them to your iPod. Watch last night's episodes this morning, or buy a whole TV series and settle in for a pocket-size marathon. All your TV episodes display in order, so you can navigate them easily, and every episode you buy from iTunes is optimized to look great on the iPod's crystal-clear, 320 x 240-pixel display.
Podcasts, Audiobooks, Games, and Photos
The iTunes Store features thousands of free podcasts--radio-type shows you subscribe to--including indie favorites and offerings from big names such as, ABC News, Comedy Central, ESPN, PBS, NPR, and many more. Browse and subscribe to podcasts, then sync them to your iPod and listen anytime. Even video podcasts sync to go, and all your podcasts appear in their own menu on your iPod, so they're easy to navigate.
The iPod measures up nicely, and is over 30% thinner than the previous fourth generation.
|
The iTunes Store is the bridge between your iPod and all the content your heart desires.
|
The digital shelves of the iTunes Store are stocked with thousands of audiobooks, including such exclusives as the entire Harry Potter series. Download what you want, sync to your iPod and catch up on your reading the audio way. Just like podcasts, you can browse audiobooks in their own menu on your iPod. And your iPod automatically recognizes where you left off reading and bookmarks your place, so it is easy to dive back into the story. You can even change the reading speed to suit you--this is a perfect feature for learning a new language.
Now that the iTunes Store features iPod games, you can keep hours of fun at your fingertips. Download brand-new and classic games, including Bejeweled, Texas Hold 'Em, Vortex, Mahjong, Mini Golf, Pac-Man, Tetris, and Zuma, for just a few dollars each, then sync them to your iPod and play along with your favorite tunes. All iPod games from the iTunes Store are designed specifically for the fifth-generation iPod, and all of them look great on the 2.5-inch color display.
If you can fill your iPod with photos, then you've got a ton of images at your disposal. iPod holds tens of thousands of photos that you can sync from your Mac or Windows PC via iTunes. Use the Click Wheel to scroll through photo thumbnails the same way you scroll through song titles. To see a photo full-screen, just click the center button. You can even view photo slideshows--complete with music--on your iPod or on a TV via the optional iPod Video/Photo AV Cable. Select Slideshow Settings, choose the transition effect and the music, and then start the show.
Search, Settings, and Extras
With thousands of songs, audiobooks, and more on your iPod, you need an easy way to search and enjoy your collection. A brand-new, built-in search function lets you use the Click Wheel to type out the name of the song, artist, album, audiobook, or podcast you're looking for, and your iPod returns results instantly as you select letters--finding what you want couldn't be easier.
The fifth-generation iPod lets you customize menus, check capacity, change your language, change how your iPod sounds, and more, all from the easy-to-use Setting menu. Click About to see how many songs are on your iPod and how much room you have left. Click Main Menu to select what items appear in your Main Menu, tweak the built-in equalizer, or set a maximum volume limit--everything you need to personalize your iPod, from backlight timer to clicker sound effects, appear in Settings.
And, lastly, your iPod is loaded with extras. Everything from calendars, contacts, and the World Clock appear in the Extras menu, along with a few more handy items. Take the Screen Lock, for example. Spin the Click Wheel to choose a four-digit combination and protect your iPod from prying eyes. If you forget your combo, you can reset it at your next sync. Or use the built-in stopwatch to log your best times at the gym. And when it's finally time to play, the Extras menu lists all your games, including the ones you purchase from the iTunes Store.

Customer Reviews:
Nice bells & whistles, but burned in the end.......2007-07-02
I finally bought into the Ipod hype this January and purchased 2 80 gigs; one for me and my Sis. It's a very good device with lots of plusses and few minues. The one thing I MUST WARN about is to not run or even jog on a treadmill with your 80 gig Ipod. I'm a distance runner and 30 minutes into running on the treadmill the Ipod will skip and go out. My Ipod was in a sports armband when this happened. A screen would repeatedly pop up saying something about a firmwire accessory not being supported when there was nothing even plugged into the Ipod. I disregarded it and eventually got pretty much burned in the end. Now my Ipod is recognized by any computer and the only way I can charge it is to use a dock. And even when it's charged, the battery drains so dramatically fast that it lasts 2 hours tops. I've even fully charged it and let it sit overnight and the battery manages to drain itself overnight. So now I cannot add anything to it and I haven't even filled half of it. Moral of the story, do not use your Ipod while excercising. Luckily my Sis never used the Ipod I bought her so I'm hoping to get it from her. But I still threw $350 bucks to the wind none the less...
Not worth it.......2007-07-01
Please, if you are considering purchasing this product, be aware that the company does not stand behind their product. It will break just after the warranty expires and they do not repair their iPods, only replace them. If you happen to be days outside your warranty they'll tell you they will take back the broken one and give you 10% off a new one. Look elsewhere for a product much easier to use and more reliable. Don't waste your money on this item.
A MUST BUY!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-29
This iPod has great quality, even without iTunes plus (Some people might not know what that is). It has amazing quality for videos also. I was amazed at how clean the picture was! Although the one downside was it had a lot of fingerprints on the finish and it could scratch without a case on.
Nice replacement for my iPod mini.......2007-06-28
I bought this 80GB iPod video to replace my 2-year-old iPod mini (the battery was shot), and also to serve as an external hard drive for my PC laptop. So far it's working great, and I love it! My music, movies, podcasts, etc. are easy to navigate through the menus, and the iPod itself is very easy to use. The click-wheel is not as sensitive as it was on my mini, so I no longer have any problems with music unintentionally skipping or pausing. My videos show up great on the color screen, and even low-definition videos I download from YouTube or elsewhere appear to be high-quality on my iPod screen. I have most of my music library (about 5,000 songs) and 5 videos (including 4 full-length movies) on the iPod, and it's not even half way full yet. I have absolutely no regrets about this purchase.
However, the biggest drawback is that the screen and body of the iPod smudges very easily due to fingerprints. I would have also preferred that it come with a belt clip -- I used the belt clip that came with my iPod mini whenever I took it out of my carrying case. The dock that comes with this iPod in the box is very flimsy and I couldn't use it. The carrying case that comes with is it OK and will help protect the iPod from smudging and damage until you manage to procure a better carrying case (I ordered the Belkin II with kickstand). Also, I originally intended to purchase the black iPod, but the price went up at the last minute so I bought this one instead. I have absolutely no regrets about this purchase -- Amazon has the cheapest price on the Internet because they offer free super saver shipping on the iPod itself and also on the carrying case I purchased along with my iPod.
Side note: I sold my iPod mini online to a trading company called NextWorth, and they are giving me cash for it. I recommend this if you are replacing an old iPod with this one.
Notes from a new Ipod user..........2007-06-28
I got my Ipod, and immediately it started working. Then, all of a sudden, it flipped out and stopped. I couldn't get it running. I tried the soft reset, nothing. Then I finally called the applecare and they told me to do the soft reset (toggle the hold switch, then hold the menu/center buttons together). After the apple logo comes on, you then stop holding the menu/center and click the center & play button together. This saved my ipod, and me from the hassle of returning it to Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
Best iPod Ever.......2007-07-02
I love my 60GB Video iPod- there's plenty of storage room with all my music, photos, videos and room left over to backup my data. If you look at the price per Gigabyte, this is without a doubt the most cost-effective iPod model. The Battery lasts for hours upon hours when playing music and still for several hours when watching video. I love the fact that I can hook this up to my TV with a video cable and watch my video on the big screen. It also works great when coupled with the dock and remote, before the Apple TV, this was the best way to watch my iTunes movies and videos on the big-screen from my sofa.
The iTunes software works great for managing all my media and the sync process is easy and fast with the USB 2.0. Just plug it in and go. I was really surprised at how clear the video screen was - yes it is small, but it's fine for occasional viewing such as when on a trip. Made my 8 hour overseas flight much more enjoyable. I also bought an iPod compatible stereo for my car and now I rarely use anything else. Great for podcasts and audio books, especially for long commutes.
Oh yeah, and last but not least- it's absolutely gorgeous.
A few bugs but great service.......2007-06-15
My husband got this for me for my birthday and I have used it non-stop ever since. It crashed several times, no one knows why, and I took it to the local Apple store and they replaced it for free.
Great product and great price
iLove my iPod.......2007-04-19
Enough said. I was a long time hold out, but I'm so glad that I gave in. Great for travel and home.
Apple still have major reliability problems.......2007-04-04
First unit stopped working within first year. Even the replacement unit stopped working in 3 months. Apple will not cover second unit failure in warranty. Apple still have a serious reliability problem in my experience.
The care needed for this amazing device.......2007-03-26
After purchasing the Apple iPod Black 60GB last September 2005, I noticed that once the clear seal which protects the screen and iPod wheel was taken out, I found the surface to be very sensitive. The surface is succeptible to scatches easily. If you are planning to own this device, I suggest that you purchase adhesive plastic cover or iPod skin to protect your investment. Other than that, the iPod 60GB is an amazing device that can fit approximately 20,000 songs depending on track lengths and MB size.
Looking for new music? iTunes, the desktop companion to the iPod, offers one or two free songs every Monday online. Want Podcasts on your favorite topics? No problem, just use iTunes search engine to see if it's available in the iTunes website.
Planning on using your iPod during long drives? Purchase the iPod iTrip which easily fits underneath your 60GB player. Look for a clear station on your car stereo and start dancing or singing away!

Next Generation Brag Book & More.......2007-01-20
Was I ever surprised when my husband purchased this nifty photo iPod for me as a birthday present when they first came out on the market. Being the techno wizard that he is, he thought it would be fun for me to have not only almost all of my music collection at my fingertips, but to also be able to enjoy many of our family photographs as well.
I'm sorry to say that I don't have any tips for loading all your pictures on because I let my husband play with that part since he's so good at it. But I doubt that I would have had a problem with it either.
As with all iPod products, a case is a necessity to keep it from getting scratched. I initially had a skin for mine, but wasn't completely happy with that set up. My bonus daughter gave me a wonderful turquoise leather flip case that allows easy access to the wheel and an unobstructed view of the screen.
With all the other in depth reviews here, I won't go into a lot of the specifics of the technology, except to say that it seems there would be a better way to navigate through to find particular songs or artists or albums. But whoever thought 10 years ago, we would be able to have this cool device in the first place? So I'm grateful for what it does do - gives me hours of pleasure listening to all my favorite music and browsing through my photograph collection up close and personal with the easy click and twirl of my fingers or thumb.
I now call my fun new toy "Mimi's Next Generation Brag Book" because while other mothers and grandmothers whip out their photo albums from their handbags to brag on their Johnny and Susie, I whip out my cool new iPod Photo and twirl my thumb around and find extensive files of family photos from weddings and vacations to pictures of our new grandchildren.
Unfortunately, not long ago, I was carrying my iPod in my bag when I threw in a bottle of water without the cap being screwed on properly. When I discovered the mess in my bag later that day, my iPod was wet, and somehow the inside of the screen was showing moisture. We dried it out completely -- in a low temp oven -- yes, we did. The files were intact and the music still played beautifully, but the pictures couldn't be seen clearly because there was no backlight now. After sending it off to the factory, we received a message that the backlight was damaged. Replacing that part would have just about paid for a new one, so we opted not to get it repaired.
I still love listening to this iPod and haven't experienced any other problems. The music comes through beautifully and transports me to another realm when I'm plugged in.

Three hard disk failures-definitely buy the extended warranty.......2007-01-08
I love the Ipod when it works, but I have had three die on me out of the blue. I have taken care of all of them. They have not been dropped or exposed to high or low temperatures. It's easy to get them replaced if you pay extra for Applecare. That's definitely worth it. If you have not already invested in getting your music onto Itunes, look closedly at other MP3 players before getting locked into Ipod. At this point, I have 6000 songs rated on Itunes. It would take too much time to switch.
Would be great if it worked..........2007-01-07
In theory it would be a great product, except that my first iPod of this model had its hard drive go bad only a few months after I got it. Apple replaced it, great process, but now the replacement has gone bad after less than a year. And of course now the warranty has passed. Poorly built, dodgy model. Don't waste your money.

Worst Company I've Dealt With.......2007-07-01
For this price I expected a decent product. It breaks just after the warranty expires and they tell you they don't repair products, only replace them within warranty period. Zero stars would be much better as that is what I give it. It's difficult to get songs into the iPod and when it breaks you're out the whole enchilada! Look elsewhere if you want a decent personal jukebox and definitely avoid all things from Apple. I will be in the future.
More than 5 stars!.......2007-05-07
The iPod video is SO far greater than my iPod Nano! It's still the best for music listening, but the picture quality is outstanding and playback is easy. The games are awesome, too! You won't regret buying one.
Fabulous.......2007-04-11
Wonderful. Holds all my songs, holds my books on tape so I can listen on the road. Photos are large and sharp. Very easy to use and easy to download. The dials are excelent, on-off and volume work flawlessly. I have many products such as car adapter, speakers, external charger, and external microphone and all work great. I highly recommend the unit. I would never get less then 60 gigs, plenty of space for all of my needs. On my recent trip to California this was the only thing I took for entertainment; never listened to a song twice.
iPod 60.......2007-03-08
Nothing but praise for th iPod 60 GB It seems like all of the problems of the past generations have been resolved. It makes a perfect gym companion
ipod 60 video.......2007-02-12
Another upgrade to the existing product by Apple. Seems to have better battery life than its predecessor. The only drawback to this product is the limitations Apple puts on copying itunes downloads, which at times can be inconvenient. Back up copies of purchased music will be in itunes format and not playable on any computer not authorized by the purchaser. If you have never owned an ipod, you may want to carefully review what you purchase on line to assure you will be receiving the charger and ipod and not just the ipod alone.

Better Yet
Time for the world's best music player to take the stage for another encore. In 30 GB and 60 GB* models that hold up to 15,000** songs, full-color album art and up to 25,000 photos***, the new iPod makes the most of your music and more. Yeah, you've heard that tune before. Only now, you can watch it, too. With support for up to 150 hours**** of video and a 2.5-inch color display, the new iPod lets you take music videos and TV shows on the road.
More and Less
The new iPod boasts up to 20 hours of battery life*****, five hours more than before. Plus, you get a bigger display and one more iPod color--sleek black. But here's the kicker: At under half an inch thin, the new 30 GB iPod takes up about 45 percent less room than the original iPod. Even the new 60 GB model is 10 percent thinner than the fourth-generation 20 GB iPod. More features in less space? Sounds like iPod.
The new iPod is thinner than ever before. |
Hold Everything
Now you can put all your music in your pocket and still have room for, well, practically everything else. Catch up on your reading with audiobooks. Browse your memories with photo slideshows, complete with music. Watch video podcasts, music videos and your favorite TV shows. Consult your calendar or look up an email address. Even check the time in another city or time your fastest lap. The new iPod keeps it all close at hand.
Spin Some Tunes
The Apple Click Wheel gives you access to your entire music, photo and video library--from one thumb. Control volume and browse using the touch-sensitive surface. Play. Pause. Rewind and fast-forward. Rate your favorites. Create playlists on the go. Launch photo slideshows. The Click Wheel puts everything at your fingertips, so you can keep your eyes and ears on the music.
Sync, Look, and Listen
Playing your iPod is only half the fun. Try filling it with downloads from the iTunes Music Store. Choose from over 2 million songs, 20,000 podcasts, 2,000 music videos or your favorite ABC and Disney television shows, download them to your Mac or PC and sync them to your iPod. Add an optional audio cable to play music from the iPod to your home stereo or use an optional S-video cable with iPod to play VJ on your TV. You can perform the same big-screen feat with iPod photo slideshows. Oh, and you can do it all from across the room using the optional Universal Dock and handy new Apple remote.
* 1 GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
** Song capacity is based on four minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding.
***Photo capacity is based on iPod-viewable photos transferred from iTunes.
****Video capacity is based on 4 minutes per H.264 750-Kbps video combined with 128-Kbps audio.
*****Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and the number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

not worth it............2007-05-13
bought this thing about 3 weeks ago. And for the first 2 weeks it was fine, and I couldn't have been happier with my purchase, but then during week 3 the Ipod started to freeze up on me, and I couldn't get it working again. And apple's tech support was no help, they basically restated the same stuff from the support section on their website. Waste of money....I'm sure there's a better mp3 player somewhere....hopefully I'll find it...this was too much money to spend on something that was just going to break down 3 weeks after I bought it.
Very dissatisfied.......2007-01-05
When my daughter began downloading music to the ipod it immediately froze and was not functioning at all.The ipod was returned and another ipod(same brand) was mailed to me immediately.A couple of months later it froze again.I didn't bother to return the product and disposed it.

Not A Reliable Device.......2006-08-29
60GB = IPaperweight
I loved it while it worked, but it doesn't seem to work long. I've had 2 of these - each lasted ~7mo. before the drive croaked and began generating "Internal Disk Errors" that prevent the device from being reset, reformatted, or in any way accessed by ITunes or my computer. Apple's warranty is good only 1 yr. from the date of purchase. It covered the 1st one but not the 2nd. ~$250 to repair. I now refer to it as the IPaperweight.
iPod is an excellent and elegant tool.......2006-08-19
This (60 Gb iPod Photo) is my second iPod (the first, a G4 40Gb was pickpocketed from my napsack in the NYC subway - beware) and I've had it over a year. Looking over the spate of recent negative reviews here prompted me to respond. Most of the shrieking pans and drooling raves are divorced from reality. I think it's important to point out that iPod is a tool and only a tool - a portable music player - a compact digital device with much in common with a laptop computer. It is highly configurable and the user has many choices about how to encode music - which affects the final results a great deal.
1) About scratching. The front of the iPod is shiny plastic. You'll need to put it in a protective case. There is an extremely lively aftermarket. I bought a nice silicon case with a compliant plastic panel that covers the display for $12 on Ebay. It does the trick and a year later my iPod looks like new if I take it out of the case. A protective case must be considered manditory for an iPod. That's it - now get over it.
2) All hard drive based devices of any kind - iPods included - have limited G-force tolerance. If you jog, it will go into protection - (the music stops and unit appears paused until you hit "play" again). If you drop it while it's running, you might kill it - or cause disk damage that will require a reformat. If you want a player for jogging or sporting (skiing, skateboarding etc...) buy a Nano or a shuffle or competing solid state player. Memory chips have no moving parts and don't suffer these limitations. They just have the size limitation.
3) All electronic devices are subject to RF interference - especially digital devices. The iPod has a nice metal body shield, but it can crash when taken near power lines, radio transmitters etc...
4) Sonically all MP3 players will vary in quality based on how much encryption you choose to use. For best sound use a high bit rate (192K or above). Apple offers proprietary schemes that offer higher performance. Competing open standards exist for just about every format Apple has cooked up. Is this skeevy of Apple? Perhaps. It's similar to what Microsoft did on computers. Love it or hate it - it's part of the whole Apple experience. I use Apple's lossless compression and it works seamlessly with iTunes and yields wonderful high quality rips. Are they portable with any other deivce than the iPod? No. Do they work with any software other than iTunes? No. Am I complaining? Not yet! I personally think the iTunes software is the best software and the iPod is the best player. Down the road if the proprietary format limits me from doing something I want to do I might start complaining. Life is full of compromises and choices.
5) You must turn off equalization if you care about sound quality. Sadly this is true of every portable digital player currently extant in the world. I was expecting better with Apple - but it's not so. Every single equalization setting introduces audible distortion that ruins the experience for an audiophile like me. With EQ set to off I get wonderful sound.
6) About reliability and dealing with broken players - portable electronics take a lot of abuse. Laptops have shorter warranty periods than desktops because rapidly spinning hard drives don't tolerate motion well. This is exactly the situation in the ipod. It's a tough environment for a hard drive. There is a lively after-market for hard drive replacement services. Ambitious folks can buy cheap replacement hard drives on the open market and fix/upgrade their iPods. Sure you'll scratch the case getting it open - but it's better than a dead iPod. Battery life issues - same situation. If you like to tinker you can do this for little cost. If you are paying for the service it becomes more justifiable to just buy a new unit. Is this cost effective? Nope. But if you become addicted to the wonderfuly lifestyle of having one of these players - you'll do it.
7) Audible distortion of the Photo iPod becasue of the video jack? Maybe on early units. I have one and don't have any audible distortion when the EQ is off. This unit sounds noticeably better than my 40GB G4 iPod did. It has better battery life too.
8) What about music services? It's a totally personal opinion - but I don't recommend buying music on iTunes or any other service. They all pretty much use relatively severe mp3 compression. Buy the CDs and get full resolution. Then rip at your choice of compression. That way you have a full backup and you get all the music you pay for. I also feel that music appreciation sometimes takes time. There are many songs on albums that I didn't initally like, but grew to love over time simply because I had them because they were on the album with some more accessible hit. If we only buy the hits - we never get to know the more difficult songs and we end up shallower.
I'll confess I'm a dyed in the wool audiophile - the kind who hangs sonex on his walls and puts specially made sound reflecting pillows on his ceiling. I'm also, like a lot of audiophiles, opposed to digital equipment in general and prefer the warmer fuller sound of analog sources (like my very tricked out turntable). That being said - the system that shows you the most is the one you use most often - and for me that is the portable. For years I had high-end cassette tape walkmen, then portable CD players of various stripes. The iPod completely blows away all previous portables by a WIDE margin. The iPod sounds way better than most stand-alone CD players - the sonics are comparable to a really good DVD player playing CDs. This is a killer sounding portable when used with lossless compression, and etymotic ER-6 headphones. It has better resolution than my big rig (Rocksan Xerxes turntable, Audio Research pre and amp, and ProAc Repsonse speakers). Granted this is digital - so the highs are more brittle and there's less warmth and depth. This is highly dependent on source material. Recent recordings by good engineers sound great - through the headphones or played on a stereo system with a good cord via a line out from the cradle. I get around 1500 songs - about 135 albums worth on my 60gb. The iPod is high enough sonically that it can function as my test source for critical listening of back-end components or sharing music with audiophile friends at their house (on their big rigs). This "library" aspect is the biggest feature of the iPod - and is really life changing. I can't recommend it highly enough.
My main complaint with the iPod is with the headphones. The included headphones are not adequate for musically satisfying listening. I recommend Grado or Etymotic headphones (even the bottom of the line ones). You don't need a separate headphone amp - unless you source material is unusually low volume. "Earbud" type phones are all garbage - avoid them like the plague. Other than that - I'm a really happy camper with the iPod!
music to go.......2006-06-01
I am rating this iPod with 5 stars because I have never had a problem with it. Since day one it has been everything I hoped it would be. I purchased it as a combo with my IMac desktop. Due to a combo special and a student discount I picked up this iPod for $179. For that price, it really can't be beat. I purchased it because I have a huge cd collection (approx 1,600) that I wanted to transport. I was tired of lugging around 5-10 discs in my car or in a case on trips. While the 60 gigs didn't quite fit my collection, I have it filled up with over 16,300 songs. That's enough music to last anyone a long time. The first thing I purchased was a clear, hard plastic case. I did this to prevent scratching and damage with a fall. I've heard that these are two issues associated with the unit. That case is a wise $30 investment. It really is a wonderful invention. I haven't had much luck with digital tuner connectors to my car stereo but plugged directly into any stereo it sounds great. Thankfully my wife's new Camry has an aux input jack. I'm thinking of having one installed in my car as well. I find the 'rock' eq preset to be the best sounding overall. It has been wonderful for long trips, vacations and working out. Downloading songs to it is a snap. Anyone who can turn on a computer can do it.
Warning about the Ipod.......2006-03-12
I have really enjoyed my I pod until I started to get errors in January 2006. I started to get an error that state that Itunes can't read to or write form the Disk meaning the Ipod itself. That means I cannot add music to or take music off of the Iopd. This was very upsetting to me as I have had this item for less than a year. I Finlay called tech support at Apple. They asked for the serial# for my Ipod. They told me it was out of warranty, that the warranty had expired in December of 2005 and there was NOTHING I could do, literally. I checked my purchase and found out that I had purchased this on April 7, 2005. I was so angry that they would tell me that it was out of warranty when it clearly was not. So, this is a warning to all Ipod owners of this potential problem.

This is a simple, yet well designed product. It is essential for running with a video ipod. Great value.
Ipod arm band.......2007-06-08
I use the arm band daily during my workout. My only problem with this product is the closer are strap. Although comfortable, it tightens on a kind of a slide. I didn't like that feature so I sewed on velcro and now I like much better. I have washed it in the washing machine and it came through just fine. Just remember to air dry it!
Great deal.......2007-05-07
