Amazon.com Product Description
Sturdy, versatile, and remarkably compact, given its voluminous storage capacity, iAudio's X5 portable multimedia device is sure to be a hit. The 30 GB audio/video player and recorder can store about 7,500 songs (4 minutes each, 128 kbps) in a nearly unparalleled choice of formats, from MP3 and WMA to linear (uncompressed, CD-quality) WAV files, Ogg Vorbis files (which sound a bit better than MP3 for files of comparable size), as well as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec, compressed but designed for 1:1 encode/decode). The X5 can recognize up to 2,000 folders and 10,000 individual files, and its super power-saving circuit provides up to 14 hours continuous playback on a full charge.

Coolest of all? You can import photos taken from most digital cameras and view them on the player's 160 x 128-pixel, 260,000-color TFT LCD thanks to OTG ("on the go"), the player's USB host feature. (Certain digital cameras are not supported; see www.iaudio.com for compatibility.) Create your own logo or download logos from the iAudio web site. You can also set a picture of your choosing as wallpaper.

The player also offers FM radio listening and recording (with one-touch tuning presets), audio recording through either a built-in microphone or analog line-in input terminals, and the ability to read text as well as images--you can even view text, though not images, while listening to music.

Use the included JetAudio software to convert various video files to MPEG-4 (up to 15 fps), then enjoy the transcoded video files on the X5. Another program, JetShell, performs CD ripping and file conversion and facilitates music playback.

The X5 provides direct encoding, too, by which you can capture the output of an external audio device. This means you connect the output terminal of an external audio device to the recording (input) terminal of the X5 using a bidirectional stereo cable (supplied), letting you load material from components like a DVD player, a cassette deck, a minidisc player, a turntable, or a TV.

And, with the unit's built-in, high-fidelity microphone, the X5 can record speech with the quality of dedicated voice recorders--perfect for important meetings, lectures, and notes to self.

Onboard sound processing includes BBE Sound enhancement, BBE Mach3Bass, MP Enhance (designed to compensate for sound lost in MP3 compression), a 5-band adjustable equalizer, and 3D Surround (3-dimensional sound that gives the sound a wide sense of space).

What's in the Box
iAudio player, stereo earphones, a subpack, an installation CD (JetShell and JetAudio), a USB 2.0 cable, a line-in recording cable, a USB host adapter, an AC power adapter, a user's manual, and warranty information.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome music player, best I could find.......2007-06-28

I mainly play music, I don't do video or photos. For what I use it for, this player is great.

Why is it so good?
- Drag and drop music and make your own folders. No need to use any lame player to do annoying syncing (like iTunes). It is a USB Mass storage device.
- Great sound quality, this thing sounds good.
- Solid contruction, had to scratch, looks slick.
- Battery life is so good I still don't have a car charger! (had over a year)
- USB Host. You on vacation and need more room on your camera? Just plug it into this device and copy them over, and delete them from camera.
- Codec support. Plays almost all music format, and a lot of video (see website for complete list). Don't need to convert your library, just copy everything over and it will play.
- Lots of features, voice recording works great, radio, etc.. etc..

What could be improved?
- Needs that lame thing plugged in bottom to charge, hook up to pc, and to use aduio out. Build that stupid thing in the device please.
- video screen isn't great comparted to Zune, Toshiba, or latest iPod.

5 out of 5 stars This one can bury iPod.......2007-04-19

This MP3 player is a better than any in the market right now as far as playing music is concerned. The sound is amazing and can be configured using equalizers and BBE. This player is filled to the brim with features. Supports a wide range of audio formats. Its amazing and has the potential to throw Apple out of business, if the following are corrected:

- Subpack is nuisance.. to upload songs, charge, line in/out you need to plugin another component. All these should be integrated into the player.
- Subpack and tiny rubber stopper can get easily misplaced.
- Browsing by directory is fine with me as i have all my songs properly organized by artists and album. For those who dont have it organised can find it difficult to use the player as you cannot sort by artist, album or genre.
- Need some vibrant colors on the body - this will enhance the looks of the player.
- Requires strong marketting. Its Apple and Creative everywhere, no one has even heard of COWON.

I will recommend this to everybody. You get the best value for money.

5 out of 5 stars very decent hard-drive based mp3 player.......2007-03-09

I love this mp3 player. It died on me after a year and 3 months, though. I feel that it is my fault because i've been using the Rockbox open-source firmware for quite sometime. So I guess you can say that i didn't use it as originally intended. However the battery life was beautiful. The screen isn't as big as i feel it should be, so that could affect some people. but what really kept me to it was the sound quality. Just be sure to get a decent pair of headphones to really appreciate them.

4 out of 5 stars Good player, but terrible docs.......2007-03-06

This is my first MP3 player, so I really am a newbie to all of this. If you want a review about technical aspects and sound quality, other reviews are much better. This review is pretty much from the perspective of an MP3 player ignoramus.

Pros:
* The sound is great and the screen is easy to read and use.
* The case is sturdy and won't crack if you look at it sideways

One the down side...
* The cover for the port attachment is small and isn't permenantly attached so it's easy to lose and hard to get back in.
* the docs are terrible. What's there is badly translated into english and the font used in the printed docs is so small that it's unreadable.
* The "Getting Started" guide isn't in any order, so I didn't know what to do in what order.
* The instructions for using JetShell (the tool to add music to the player) don't actually say "Drop your files here, idiot, and they're added to your player."
* The earphones that come with the player are hard metal and are really not comfortable.

Again, this is the feedback of a total newbie who loves the player, but is also uptight about writing good docs in general.

I don't regret this purchase for a second.

1 out of 5 stars I bought this instead of the iPod.......2007-02-28

This is a huge regret for me. The iAudio is more an expensive portable hard drive than anything else. The navigation sucks, there is no way to organize your music etc.(like, the songs are all there but they aren't seperated by artist/album/etc. it's just a big list. as someone who has over 20 songs, that's a problem!), the provided program is full of glitches and despite many calls to customer service, I could hardly get anything on it, the folders would appear on the drive of the iAudio, but it would not let me open them. I consider myself to be a computer savvy person and if I can't get this machine working for me, I doubt the average person could either. After a month of frustration, I gave it to a friend who could not get it working either, past getting a mess of unorganized songs on it. 2 months later, it broke and customer service was no help at all. Currently it's sitting in a drawer somewhere.
what a waste of money!
Yes, this iAudio LOOKS attractive and offers more than the iPod for less, but it's not worth the hassle.

the only positive thing I have to say about this player is that the audio quality is great. But it doesn't make much difference on a player that doesn't do what I need it to!

I am not a fan of apple, but I got a second hand iPod for cheap and I am very happy with it. I also purchased the creative zen visionM and I love it!!! (I am kind of obsessed with music) After A LOT of research, I'd stick with creative or apple.

don't make the same mistake I did!
