Amazon.com Review
In its own right, the Creative Zen Vision:M is a very capable digital audio player, video player, photo viewer, FM radio, and more. Indeed, one could go on and on about how it has the right specifications to make it a constant companion for entertainment on the go. The really big news about this device, though, is that it's the first device to boast complete compatibility with Amazon Unbox, the new digital video and music download service from Amazon.com.
The Zen Vision:M has the features, ease-of-use, and power to become your constant media companion. See the Vison:M interactive demo.
Design Let's get things out in the open. The Apple iPod is the 800-pound gorilla when it comes to the digital media player business and, unavoidably, every other device is measured against it. In most respects, the Vision:M matches up pretty well, and there are few things you may even like better. Length and width dimensions are exactly the same at 4.1 and 2.4 inches respectively. When it comes to girth, though, the iPod has the Vision:M beat; the Vision:M is .7 inches thick, while the iPod measures .4 inches. The Vision:M is slightly heavier, too. These details aside, the Vision:M feels comfortable, yet sturdy, in the hand, with curved surfaces in all the right places.
Creative takes a somewhat different approach with the Vision:M's controls, answering the iPod's Click Wheel with a vertical touch pad--which allows you to scroll up and down menus and control volume--plus four buttons that offer navigation through the user interface. The contextual menu button on the bottom right is a welcome addition, allowing you to make quick settings changes and view information about media files on the fly--functions that are more cumbersome on an iPod. Creative could have made the buttons a bit more sensitive--they require a firm press that gives an overall feeling of clunkiness to an otherwise well-designed user interface. Another annoyance is the touch pad's over-sensitivity; it's easy to make selections unintentionally, sending you on a wild ride through the user interface.
The Vision:M's screen, which measures 2.5 inches diagonally, offers sharp details, vibrant color, and excellent response with little or no video ghosting during high-action sequences. The 320 x 240 resolution is to be expected from a device this size, and although it's small, you'll likely have no trouble enjoying video while you're sitting on the subway or a flight, or in the back-seat of a car. Our only nitpick was the screen's less than stellar viewing angle, especially when compared side-by-side with a video iPod. While this can be good for maintaining privacy, the narrow viewing angle also means that friends beside you will struggle to see anything other than a black screen.
Music, Videos, Photos, and More The Vision:M's music organization scheme is standard fare; you can browse playlists, artists, tracks, albums, and genres. Equalizer settings are robust, with a nice range of automatic settings, plus a custom equalizer that's easy to control. The music library's "DJ" function is a nice touch, allowing you to listen to your most popular tracks. It can also pull up the tunes you listen to least frequently--in case you've got some forgotten tunes lying around on the Vision:M's 30 GB hard drive. Sound quality is everything you'd expect from a top shelf digital audio player, and DRM'd Windows Media files played without a hitch. The device fully supports a whole range of "PlaysForSure" download and subscription services, such as Napster and Yahoo Music. Creative also ships a CD-ripping and music transfer application called MediaSource with the Vision:M.
Playback of Windows Media DRM'd video files (WMV9) was also hassle-free. Purchased videos delivered crisp colors and detail, with no frame drops. Video playback consumes a lot of power, bringing Creative's claim of four hours of video playback into serious doubt. Expect under three hours when watching videos continuously. Thankfully, if you need to come back to your video later the Vision:M's software remembers the timecode of where you left off--unless you power the device down between viewing sessions. In addition to protected and unprotected WMV files, the Vision:M can play MPEG 1/2/4, Motion-JPEG, DivX 4 and 5, and XviD formats, making it a very flexible device with respect to encoding options.
The Vision:M can also store thousands of photos, letting you browse through them or set up a slideshow. The device's TV-out option comes in handy here, as you can present slideshows on a TV or projector. Videos can be displayed this way, too. An FM radio with easy preset tuning functions and great signal reception, plus a voice recorder feature, round out the extra media features. There's also a handy application on the Vision:M that formats a portion of the drive for use as USB 2.0 mass storage, letting you set aside up to 16 GB for data storage.
Connectivity and Synchronization A Creative Sync Adapter ships in the box with the Vision:M, making it a snap to connect the device to a USB 2.0-capable PC. With the connection made, Windows XP recognized the device right off the bat and Windows Media Player immediately asked us if we wanted to load the PC's music onto the Vision:M. Music management and synchronization has come a long way on the PC, and the experience of organizing and transferring music to and from the Vision:M was, barring a few curious click-through boxes, pretty seamless. The Vision:M also supports synchronization of your Outlook contacts, calendar, and tasks, in case you want to use it as a personal organizer of sorts.
Amazon Unbox Integration To be truly successful, the Vision:M has to be more than a great media device, it has to integrate with Amazon Unbox and make the process feel like second nature. Although the Vision:M was tested using a beta version of Amazon Unbox, things are looking good already. Amazon Unbox and the Vision:M go together like peas in a pod, making the process of purchasing, downloading, and enjoying content on the go a real cinch. The Amazon Unbox Video Player, which queues, downloads, organizes, and plays your purchased movies and TV shows, recognized the Vision:M right off the bat. An icon for the Vision:M appears in the devices panel of the application, and you can immediately begin transferring downloaded content to the device. Once you're all loaded up, the Vision:M offers a great way to bring Amazon Unbox entertainment along for the ride.
Pros
Crisp, vibrant color screen is great for video
Generous video format compatibility
Excellent sound quality and music management functions
Cons
Narrow screen viewing angle may be a problem for some
Finicky controls for some functions
Slightly more bulky than other competitors

Zen works, then it doesnt...........2007-07-03
It seems there are still some compatibility issues with Vista and syncing the device. all in all its a pretty good player. just wish there was better support when it stops working.
THE BEST.......2007-07-02
THE CREATIVE ZEN VISION: M IS THE BEST MP3 OUT THERE. NOT ONLY CAN IT HOLD UP TO 15,000 SONGS BUT OVER A HUNDRED HOURS OF VIDEOS ALONG WITH PICTURES. THIS PLAYER CAN TRULY DO IT ALL.
Mostly great with some caveats.......2007-06-30
I have had my Zen Vision M for about 4 months now. On the positive side the music is very clear, it has absolutely great sound reproduction capabilities, The other major positive is that for $15 per month, you can sign up with Yahoo's Rhapsody music service and in one months time, you can download thousands of songs to the Vision M and all you have paid is $15. That is simply amazing. I have downloaded about 4500 songs and am never at a loss for good listening. Another really great feature is the FM radio. Sometimes you just want to take a walk and listen to your favorite rock, jazz station or NPR and this radio works really well.
There are a couple of things that bother me. It took a lot of getting used to the slide feature for clicking on artists/songs, etc. but I mostly have. I overshoot a lot and the thing is too sensitive, it can accidentally, with your slightest touch, put on a song or go to the wrong spot. Another thing is it has frozen on me about 4 times right in the middle of a song and I had to wait until I was at the end of my walk and at home to reset.
Overall, I find it is better than the ipod I had which totally stopped working after about a year and a half and I would highly recommend it.
Absolutely perfect.......2007-06-28
It took a while getting used to the programs and how to edit my song titles (via the browse media on my computer) but it never freezes on me, shows a great image, great quality and sound... I am so happy I spent the money to get this over an ipod
Creative Zen Vision M.......2007-06-27
This product will not disappoint you. Although the description does say it comes with the AC charger, it does not however. But the Zen itself is a superior product. And the pretty pink color is perfect.

Customer Reviews:
O.K. for audiobooks but the external speaker was disappointing........2007-06-29
I wanted a device to play audiobooks and the reasons I chose the Zen W were the large memory, the bookmarking feature, and the external speaker. The Zen is easy to use and the first two features work wonderfully, but I was disappointed in the external speaker. It works great as long as you're right by the device and there isn't much background noise. I had hoped to lay it on the seat of my car and listen to it while driving, but I ended up having to buy a cassette tape adapter. Another minus for me is the size - it's bulky to wear on a belt and use with earbuds. If a person wanted to watch movies, the larger screen would be nice, but for just listening to books or music, it's too much.
Creative Labs Zen W.......2007-06-27
I purchase the Zen W a month ago. I have burned about a dozen movies onto the Zen so far, they look great! I did not try using the Creative Labs provided software for burning DVD's since I read many complaints online from other ZEN W owners that the Creative Labs software was worthless. Instead, I downloaded DVD Catalyst which works great! By the way, I plugged the Zen into my car auxillary to listen to the movies over the car speakers and the sound is amazing! I have also loaded tons of CD's (using Windows Media Player). For the size of this I am impressed with the sound, and the movies are amazing! It is larger than other players, but so much more versatile. I use this to listen to my workout playlists at the gym and also for watching movies when I travel. Also has FM, voice recorder and will store photos. I'm glad I bought this, would definitely reccomend.
Friends Dont Let Friends Buy iPods.......2007-06-25
Since iPods have flooded the market, I will compare this player with the ever so popular iPod since I also owned that player before this one. I've owned this player for about 1 month now so I think I have a pretty good idea of how this thing is. I will try to review every level so you have a great idea about what you get with this player. I will skip the physical design of the player since, its obvious from the photos.
WHY I BOUGHT THIS PLAYER:
I bought this player after I was fed up with my iPod dying on me after 1.5 years. I know that seems alot in terms of owning an iPod, but when you put it on the lowest settings possible, it just doesnt cut it for me. So I decided to try the best Creative had to offer in terms of competition to the iPod, and that is the Creative Zen Vision W.
FEATURES:
You'll find many features that the iPod has on the Zen Vision W (ZVW for short).
Music - In terms of music you can browse by artist, album, genre, playlist, all tracks, recordings, bookmarks, and a DJ option. The last three will make you scratch your head if you are an iPod user. Thats because, the ZVW also comes with a built in microphone and of course you can listen back to your recordings, hence the option. The bookmark function is used to have you start off where you left off on a certain track when you had wondered off to other songs. You are allowed 10 book marks at one time. The DJ option are Creative's Pre-made playlists where you can choose it to play the top 20 popular songs, random songs that you have yet to listen to on your player, random songs, song that are highly rated, songs have yet to be rated, and an album of the day.
When listening to music the quality was pretty much the same as the iPod, I didnt notice any difference in sound quality without the EQ settings which are (Jazz, Acoustic, Vocal, Classical, Disco, Pop, New Age, Rock, and your own custom made EQ). The EQ I must admit is a little quirky however I think its my stigmatism I've gained after using the iPod. You also have the option of increasing your bass, turning on smart volume (which is the equivalent of the iPod's Sound Check, a volume limiting feature that is password locked, and the option of whether to have the ZVW's speaker on, off, or on auto (the speaker plays when you have no earphones in it). The sound of the speaker for the player is somewhere from mediocre to above average though I barely use the speaker.
The music presentation is pretty similar to the iPod. You have a thumbnail of the album art to the left and the track name, followed by the album, and the artist to the right. Below that information, you can see the track progress which you can speed through or reverse and obviously skip back or forward.Pressing the OK button while the song is playing will lead you to the screen where you can rate the track (again the same as the iPod), however pressing it a third time will not lead you to an enlarged photo of the album but where the track you are listening to in comparison to the tracks that are on the playlist. The one thing that the ZVW lacks is a good way to make a playlist on the go on the player, I have yet to successfully create one. I often find my problem to be that I have whole albums on a playlist rather than certain songs. For me, I have to make my playlists on the computer. The ZVW also has a submenu you can open up to see the details of the track such as how many times you've played it, the genre, the artist, album, song name, track duration and track bit rate. You can also - though I don't now what the purpose is - tell the player that the next time you link up to your computer you want to purchase the track you are listening to.
One thing iPod users may moan about is that the ZVW ONLY supports wma and mp3 , so that iTunes Collection you just bought is not going to sync up right away, though creative does give you a converter to convert your file, and if that fails.... burn your tracks as an audio cd and then rip 'em.
The battery life was pretty true to the product description... 18 hours.
Photos - In terms of photos, there's not much to say about the photos. You can view them in a slideshow with music with 8 different transitions, where they are variations of the way the photos slide off the page and one where it fades the photos in and out. You can hook up the ZVW to a TV and share your photos that way. You can also use your photos as wallpaper for your player and change different themes. The PSP wallpapers can be used on here. Finally, the ZVW only shows jpeg photos which are the most common format of photos so it shouldn't be a problem.
Videos - In terms of videos, this player centers itself around it. The video section is categorized with Zencasts (creative's version of a podcast), video and TV (files you categorized as TV). It supports many formats such as AVI, MJEPG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DIVX, XVID, MP4 and WMV9. This should just about cover every popular format of video that is downloaded. If your video is compatible with the player which is a rare occasion, the included video converter on the computer will help convert it which takes about 3/4 the amount of time to watch the file. On even rarer occasions, though it has happened before, you should have a converter other than the creative handy as well. Videos depending on the quality of your original video, are pretty well presented on the ZVW.That in itself was a major selling point for me because I hated having to convert all the time with the iPod. My copies of Heroes, BBC's Planet Earth, and other files have shown up pretty crisp and clear with a wide viewing angle and since its in widescreen I dont have those pesky letter boxes above and below the screen. Even if there are (such as the 4:3 aspect ratios (the no-widescreen square-ish videos) I can adjust the video so that it stretches out to the entire screen and I dont really notice a size distortion when I do that.
A unique feature about the ZVW is that it can fast forward through files at certain speeds in the same manner as how you would fast forward through a DVD, so you know where to stop exactly. Of course the video picks up right where you left it.
I cannot answer you how the unbox works with this player since I've never used the service, I just download videos where I can and watch them on my player. One minor gripe I have though is that due to the size and weight of the player, I cannot hold this player through out a whole movie (I cant do it even with my iPod) so I usually just end up putting it on my arm or something. What I am trying to say is that a stand would have been nice.
You can also view your video content on TV with the A/V cable. When hooked up to the TV it may seem weird since the display of the menu will be small but when the video plays it will fill up the screen and I found the quality of it being interpreted onto the TV set(the old boob tube not the new flat panel wide screens) a pretty accurate interpretation of the video file. And for those tech geeks out there, sorry but you cant record TV shows directly into this player.
One thing that I felt could've maybe done better is to have sequaential video playback, which it did lack.
The battery life for video was very good... 4.5 hours which is about an hour longer than the iPod's.
Compact Flash Card - Sorry, I havent used it.
Microphone - I've found this to be very useful as a college student as a I record my professor's lessons. The microphone tells you how strong the sound source is when you are recording it, and you can stop, pause, or split when recording. The microphone was able to pick up sound pretty well and the quality of the recording was a very good interpretation of the actual sound of the source.
FM Radio - I live in NYC and we have a ton of radio stations here and the ZVW was able to pick up the signals of each station easily and it shows how strong the signal of the station is in the same manner as a cellphone signal. Autoscan makes presetting alot easier as all the available stations are presetted, so you can just skip from one station to the next with just a push of a button.
OTHER NOTEABLE FEATURES:
- You can sync up the player to outlook so that you can store (though you cant edit) your schedule for the month, year etc.
- Timer feature closes the player after a certain time (good for those times you are going to sleep with this on)
- Control the brightness and how long the backlight stays on.
- PROTECT which files can and cannot be seen with a password rather than the iPod making you lock out the whole player
- DELETE files directly off the player
- DURABLE design of the player itself - I dropped it from 5 feet FACE FIRST into my hardwood floor and not a scratch on my player... can your iPod withstand that?
- INEXPENSIVE MAINTENANCE - #1 complaint about the iPod is the battery and how you have to spend alot of money to get it replaced. With the ZVW, you just slide out the battery off of the back like you would a cellphone battery and replace it yourself. The battery sells for 50 bucks... whicb is alot cheaper than what you have to pay to replace the iPod's.
- EVERYTHING INCLUDED - Thats right, no having to go out and buy the freaking charger seperate, or the A/V Cable. Everything you need is in the box.
BOTTOM LINE : Though this player is quiet bulky compared to the iPod - some users might have to use two hands to hold it - it has alot of features that outnumber the iPod. The great display, and number of format support for videos, the items that come included with the player, the number of features it has, and the cheaper price I feel outweigh the iPod. The only reason I can see people buying an iPod is to look like everyone else... that and only carry around light things that don't really have many features.
Waste of my time and money.......2007-06-21
I bought this after a lot of research and after reading the reviews on amazon.com. I didn't want to get an ipod because its such a fad thing and I thought I could find something better and cheaper-I am now considering getting the ipod or Zune. I was so disappointed with this player [...].
Video: If you were interested in watching videos-give up. I know it says it supports all these different types of videos but you have to convert many of them first!! A hour of video takes about an hour to convert! In otherwords don't even think that with a little work you'll be using your player-it will take a while.
Music: Even if the video sucked I was prepared to keep it if it had a good music player-It doesn't. Its not as easy to use as some of the other mp3 players that I've had and it doesn't even sound that good.
Suggestions: Do more research and check out the ipod or zune-this player just doesn't cut it
could be much better.......2007-06-16
Ok, there are enough praises for this unit, I just want to let the ppl who are interested in this product know what are the negative aspects before they rush into buying it. I have used the zen M before this unit, it was fine, so is the zen W, they are better than ipod in my opinion.
The problem is the design flow. The Zen W unit resembles PSP in certain ways, similar screen size, both plays movies, music, photos. Not to compare apples with oranges here, I just want to focus on the control design here. Before I bought this, I used my PSP for all my movies and podcast files. The controls on PSP are superb, easy to access, big distinct buttons, much more sturdier, not to mention it is alot more comfortable to hold in hand while watching movies. The Zen W shaped like a rigid rectangle, feels weird holding it. The buttons on the Zen W are all crunched together, too small to operate with ease(and I have small hands). Often I find myself pressing the wrong button because they were too close to each other. Also the buttons are kind of flat, doesn't have a solid feel to them, leaving you wondering sometimes whether you actually pressed it hard enough. The power button is spring operated, which means you gonna have to hold it for a while to turn on and shut it off, the same mechanism used on the PSP. But the Zen W have cheaper quality in comparison. When I shake it, I can hear the clucking noise inside, which really worries me that it will break off soon. Now the software, Zen M and W both suffers from the lack of user friendly in movie controls. What it means is that, during movie playback, fasting forward and backward is really a pain, you have to hold the buttons down forever, it will slowly pick up the speed, then goes way too fast to pin point a certain time. It amazes me Creative didn't make a real "seek" function that let you input the elapsed time in and jump to there directly, or simply pause the movie and let you slide the time bar over.
Consider the PSP is only $200, with gameing and internet capabilities, Zen W delivers a cheaper quality product with poor design. Oh and did I mention PSP can displays 16mil colors?
So why I bought it anyway? coz the CF backup function, that's the single most brilliant idea Creative has created in this new product, it's very useful for traveling with a digi cam. Essentially you have two product in one, personal media player, and a memory card backup drive.

Customer Reviews:
Good product for the price.......2007-03-30
Pros:
A lot of features such as Video Playback, MP3, Organizer, Alarm Clock, Voice Recorder, FM Tuner. Using their software is basically like opening up explorer in Windows. Resolution and sound quality are nice. Having buttons instead of a touch pad allows for more precise control. Removable battery pack is nice. There is an additional extended battery pack available for purchase. Has a speaker so you can blast ghetto music in a fancy restaurant if you'd like. Can take a CompactFlash card to transfer data. Many other fun features.
Cons:
OMG is it HUGE!!! I honestly wasn't expecting it to be THAT big. I thought "hm... maybe a little bit bigger than the Zen Vision M...?" This thing is almost the exact same size as my Nintendo DS! I just can't get over how HUGE it is. It's a bit of a turn off for those who might want to use it to exercise and walk around with. Think super old school Walkman but significantly heavier! When the delivery guy dropped it off, I was shocked that the box was so HUGE!! I thought they had sent me the wrong item! And then I opened it...!!! I was almost repulsed by how prehistoric it looked!
More cons... The thing LAGS. It definitely doesn't operate nearly as fast as the iPod when switching menus. I guess that's because of all the things it offers. It does get to be a little bit tedious and frustrating.
Even more cons... Lack of accessories. I guess I probably won't need a toughskin or protector for this thing, because if I drop it, it'll damage whatever it lands on, purely by its size.
Overall, as far as the functions of this player are concerned, I'm happy with it. However, I'm still trying to get over the ridiculous size of the thing. Do I dare bring it out in public? What would my friends say? Would people stare?! I highly suspect that they will laugh.
Oh well... I guess I was really only going to use it to play music in the car. I must remember to hide it in the glove box before I let any passengers in the car.
Creative Zen Vision 30 GB Multimedia Player (white) .......2007-03-12
I just love my Multimedia Player. I can play songs, listen to books and store pictures to carry around with me. The screen is big and sharp so you can see pictures very well. I have not tried to play videos on it yet and I have not had any problems so I don't have any complaints.
Perfect.......2007-03-11
I was a little concerned about buying this item by the Internet, but everything was really easy and the service was perfect. The items arrived in very good conditions and on time. Wonderful service!
Good product.......2007-01-14
Have had this for almost a year now.
Pros:
The battery life is good.
FM radio and recording.
Video out.
Removable battery
Can also double as a portable hard disk for photos during travel (bought the flash card adapter for SD card use)
Cons:
The video angle can get irritating as you have to look straight at it but when (if) found, its very good (but not as good as PSP)
I would recommend this over the iPod as I've used both. Its also easier (and MUCH faster) to transfer videos to the Zen than to the iPod.
I Love This Thing!.......2006-10-29
I am very impressed by the Multimedia player, especially with the image (video) quality. It is a little heavy to carry around, but it has worked great for me using it in rental cars with a cassette adapter, and in various hotel and cruise cabins with the portabale speaker system. I have found the controls and menus to be easy to work thru, and easy to see. I am not sophisticated by any means, and still learning, but this unit is easy to use, and maintenance is a non-issue. Battery life isn't as the company predicted, but I got at least 6.5 hours of driving time out of it, and that was enough.
Storage of music is tremendous, and quite possibly more than I would ever be able to use, but as a portable storage device for transferring pics over a long vacation, it fills the need in me.
The problems with the unit are that it does freeze up at times, but very, very rarely during playback. Mostly it hangs up when I am downloading to the unit, or is not recognized by the PC, which has happened frequently. Once I retry, after a day or so, it loads up as though nothing had ever happened. This is disruptive, especially when you are under the gun and trying to load up before a trip, and has occured at those times, 3 times in a row. Still wouldn't give up the unit though. The biggest problem I have is not really with the unit per se, but with how the music is loaded and displayed in the folders. I guess it is related to the Tagging of the music, and needs to be cleaned up (which is really labor intensive, so free music really isn't free).
Tried to purchase accessories from Creative but, they fell down on the job because of relocation of their warehouse, or so they said. Other than that, they were pretty good at explaining any issues with the unit within the first 30 days.
Would I purchase again? Yes. But would like the pricing to be more competitive. But I have to tell you, the video quality is superb, and if you are going to load quality video, then, this is the unit to get.
