Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stands by me.......2007-01-30

This player is the best of three mp3 I have owned. It connects directly to the pc, and has excellent sound, and, as far as I am concerned has the most idiot proof controls of anything I have seen - easy to use and hard to misuse. On top of that I dropped on the street yesterday and everything still works fine.

4 out of 5 stars Great Player, But...................................................2006-11-03

Great Player. Very versatile. Sound quality is very good. On occassion, the player will freeze up trying to load a song. Seems to be due to a bad file, but the only way to reboot is to either let the battery run down or plug it into the computer. If you are away from the computer, the player is useless. Customer service is non existant and the owners manual is of very little use. The player deserves 5 stars, but lack of customer service and a poor owner's manual drops the rating. I still would recommend the player. It plays for a long time on a charge.

1 out of 5 stars doesn't work with mac.......2006-08-08

Despite claim from manufacturer this product wouldn't interface with mac. It wouldn't load the mp3 format from itunes and it took forever to load a video. I returned it it to amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Best Digital Music Player on the market..........2006-05-17

(I am comparing the X5L to the iPod, because it sort of has become the industry standard, but there are several other great music players out there, so dont forget to check them out too)

(-In response to another reviewer who had trouble getting music purchased from an online store to this player: When you buy music online, it has several restrictions on it, because it is encoded in a "proprietary" format, meaning only certain players can play it. This also prevents pirating music illegally. For example, you can only play songs bought off iTunes with an iPod... )

This is an excellent music player for those who aren't technologically illiterate. If you have trouble operating technology, I would stop reading this review and buy an iPod.

However, if you have computer skills, and are able to "create-> new folder" and use the "drag-and-drop" technique, then this player is better than the 'pod in many ways.

First of all, I dont use cowon's provided software, because it is abysmal.

However, the X5L doesnt require any software; it's plug-and-play.
So right when I got it, I created a bunch of folders and copied my music into them accordingly. Sorry, there isn't ID3 music organization, which is definitely a con, but remember; if you have computer skillz, this shouldnt be a problem. Make ur own folders.

So, to summarize what I just said, the X5L doesn't have great software or organizational features. The iPod really excels in this category

If you are an audiophile, then don't buy the iPod, you will be dissapointed. The iPod has a weak power output, and the X5L does not. I would say the sound quality is comparable to a good portable CD player. As for the packaged headphones, they are about as good as iPod buds, but what kind of audophile uses the packaged headphones?

I am getting lazy, so here are my final points:

The FM tuner is a nice addition; it has great reception, and it is very easy to record directly off the airwaves.

Navigation could have been better...

Video quality is worse than the iPod video, but it's a bit easier to get videos on the player because it accepts more formats of video.

MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE REVIEW:

The X5L has an absolutely EPIC battery life of 35 hours. I charge this device once very TWO WEEKS. As for the iPod; my 3rd gen battery died years ago. And that thing is nearly impossible to replace, althgouh i managed to do it, until the 'pod broke altogether.

Final Word: If battery life is the most important feature, get the X5L.

If you dont care as much about the battery life, consider buying the X5 for its advantages over the iPod, but it really depends on your personal needs.

5 out of 5 stars A killer!.......2006-05-02

This mp3 player is not just an audio device. What I found most useful about it is that it can view text files (at the same time as listening to music, or without music).

Why can this be useful? First and foremost, e-books. Second, you can use your player as an address/phonebook and/or repository for any reference data that one needs permanently (what I don't like about yearbook organizers is that you have to re-write all the phone numbers each year ;) ). Use your computer to write up text files and synchronize them regularly with your iAudio. Any information that you use often, you can keep in your mp3-player (for example, I as a law student keep codes there).

The rest has already been said by a lot of people (wide support for audio file formats - MP3, OGG, FLAC etc. ... although WMA files sometimes don't play, but anyway I think this format sucks, so I go with the above-mentioned three; long battery life - that is why X5L should be bought, not X5, especially if you are going to use the screen often, which is the case with reading text files; stylish design - although the black paint peels off fast in case you stick you player somewhere where it has to endure much friction). I just thought I should point out the text-reading feature, because for me, it was the main reason I chose this player - and I am happy.
