HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. Outstanding T.V........2007-06-23

I have had the 4270 for 2 weeks and I am now finishing up my break in period. I have seen zero IR of burn in. I think as long as you turn down the settings on initial break in, and watch at full/zoom- you will be fine. I have other friends with various Pionner plasmas, and they have had zero burn in either, so I am unsure where any burn in issues are coming from....

This TV is ridiculously nice- I researched pretty extensively, LCD v. Plasma, Panny, Sony, Philips, and on. I think at $1350 this TV is the best on the market period. Best picture, aestheically, it looks the best, and it has the top notch Pioneer quality. Another bonus, is the attached speaker on the bottom actually kicks out some good, quality sound and works very well until I get a home system put in.

Bottom line, this tv is flawless so far, and I have zero complaints. If you are looking for a '42 - this TV is too good to pass up, pull the trigger

Screen burn-in is a HUGE problem!.......2007-06-02

I bought this TV a few months ago, after first buying a Sony XBR2 LCD TV (I returned it, because the picture was terrible -- very pixelated and choppy looking, not crystal clear). At first, I was completely in love with the look of the plasma, which really is so much better than an LCD.

Then the burn-in problems began. I first noticed it after watching ESPN in high-definition for a few hours. When I turned the channel, the logo and other related graphics were still clearly visible on the screen. Even after not watching ESPN for several weeks, the logo was still there, but had faded somewhat. Eventually I ordered a DVD with "screen washes" which helped, but didn't fix it entirely.

Watching TV has become a worrisome activity. Forget watching anything with static images/logos, etc. -- in other words, 95% of all programming. Short of pay channels (like HBO) and a very small number of cable stations which don't have their logo plastered on the screen 24/7, I can't use this TV without the constant worry of what damage the channel is causing.

In fact, I recently noticed the word "Comcast" burning-in from the cable menus! This is a deeply disturbing turn of events, since I obviously don't have the menus on screen for hours. This just goes to show how much of an accumulative effect this stuff also has. At this point, I mostly now use it to watch DVDs, which do look beautiful.

Amazing.......2007-03-17

I just got this TV yesterday and watched Discovery HD theater and was blown away! I adjusted all the parameters to the specs I saw on [...] and the tv was just awesome. The colors were amazing and brilliant! I hope the screen doesn't begin to fade as I've heard they can do. I also have an LCD and that doesn't come close as to brilliant as the Pioneer does. I am glad I spend the extra money for it!

and bought the 50" PDP-5070. Picture on this TV is awesome, I just felt I needed a bigger screen. No hassles from Amazon on the exchange either.

Screen Burn In a Serious Problem.......2007-03-04

I've had the set for 4 months, and while the picture is fantastic, I have numerous logos, marks, bars, etc. burned into the screen. They are really quite annoying. I try not to leave anything on the screen for any length of time, but there are few networks or shows left on commercial television that do not always have some kind of banner or logo up. I thought the commercial breaks or occassionally switching channels would protect the screen, but no such luck. The worst so far is Speedvision. I now have thier logo burned into the screen. I guess it was so gradual I wasn't catching it creeping in, but now it is very prominent. In hindsight, I would trade the richer color of the plasma for the durability of the LCD format. This will be my last plasma set.

Great TV.......2007-05-18

Picked up this TV about a month ago now, and love it. The pic is wonderful quality, especially if you love sports. Baseball and hockey look amazing on a HD feed.

Even standard definition channels look gorgeous.

I also have an upconversion DVD player wired into one of the HDMI ports, and that looks just as good as the HD cable feed.

Plenty of inputs in the back, 2HDMI, 2Composite, etc. give many options for hooking up equipment. The built in speakers are more than enough for my need at the moment, and should be find for the average TV user.

The black case, as opposed to the silver of the previous generation gives it a nice, sleek look.

Highly recommended.

I recently purchased this TV from BB and I must say that its the closest to the Pioneer in picture quality. I had a hard time deciding between the samsung 4254 and this, but when I actually saw the TVs in the store, the decision was a lot easier to make.

Pros:
*Picture quality(PQ) is amazing. Panasonic is well known for their high contrast and deep blacks and this TV is no different
*Black bezel looks so much better than the silver one. Something I learned: a black bezel actually makes the picture stick out since it provides a good contrast difference.
*Remembers adjustment settings for each input
*Reflection (lack of) is actually better than my old tube tv. I was worried about this, since plasma's are typically very reflective, but the reflection on this TV did not bother me at all. YMMV.

Cons:
*settings are very limited. There are the standard adjustments for picture brightness tint sharpness etc, but its missing the the fine tuning adjustments that most new tv's have.
*I am not a big fan of the zoom function since it makes the picture slightly pixelated.
*720p(1024x768 rectangular) only. I initially wanted a 1080p LCD but at this size I guess it really doesnt matter. Not to mention the PQ is light years ahead of an LCD in this price range.
*No VGA input. This is a bummer, but i picked up a DVI-HMDI cable from monoprice for a couple of bucks.
*Slight Image retention(IR) (burn in). If a still image is left on the TV for more a couple of minutes, the image can still be seen on a white screen. The good thing is if you watch widescreen TV(without the side bars) for an hour or so, this completely goes away. This is more of a plasma issue, and I feel this TV does a much better job at clearing up IR than what I have read about previous generation plasmas.

I am pretty satisfied with my purchase, and I hope this review helps someone in making their investment!

My Hitachi HDTV is still broken after 4 repair attempts. Phone support flat out lies to me telling me they don't offer refund or exchange. After escalating it to her supervisor, got him to admit that exchange is an option. Now waiting for them to call me back with their decision. Not holding my breath.

So, we just bought this TV last night, and I have to say, it looks incredible. The picture is so crisp and the colors are amazing. I watched LOTR with the 1080i up converter we also bought, and it looks better than it did in the theater. It's surprisingly light, but it will take two people to install it. THIS IS A GREAT TV FOR THE PRICE!

Look around, this one gets great reviews everywhere........2007-06-27

Pros: 1) Great picture! This plasma has the contrast you just can't find on an LCD.... not to mention the vibrant color! 2) The native resolution is higher than similarly priced panels at 1024X768. 3) This set easily produces a 1080i signal out of a cable box. Currently most satellite and cable companies are broadcasting HD in 1080i, and this panel which I am using as my bedroom tv is fitting the bill perfectly! I should mention I'm using component to BNC adaptors for my picture.

I also own a Sony 50" plasma which is also beautiful(but has had some reliability issues) and have tried an hdmi in that set and found that the picture looked better with component cables. With hdmi, the picture lost it's vibrant colors, and for the hefty price I returned the cable from where I bought it. Both cables were from the same top manufacturer. I also say skip the terminal board, unless you really need a HDMI input and just buy decent component cables. Even the component cables supplied from the cable company work just fine.

Cons: 1) The moniter should come with some BNC adapters. You will need to buy some if you use the component option. They only cost a few bucks and you will need 3 BNC adapters(BNC male/RCA female). 2) No tuner or speakers. This is exactly what I wanted though as my cable box is being used as a tuner, and I wanted to chose my own speakers. Not really a con unless you want these built in. In that case, you should buy the consumer version.

Other Thoughts: I'm thrilled with this purchase. This tv came with a free 5 year warrenty from Panasonic as long as you purchase before December 31, 2006. Keep an eye out because this free warranty is still re-appearing form time to time. A 5 year warranty simply means Panasonic has a lot of confidence in their product!

This is the second time I've dealt with the delivery company AIT(not sure who Amazon is currently using). Both times they've been awesome. They are not required to bring the tv inside(front door delivery), but have always offered. Just be sure you examine the panel before you sign anything as it could become damaged in shipment. Also, they usually deliver alone, and it's good to have somebody home to help them who is capable of lifting. Otherwise, you will have a problem. They call to schedule a delivery time. It will only protect your display.

I live in Barbados, so bying this item from a third party seller ritz camera had me abit nervous but i trusted amazon so i knew that all would have gone well.

About a month after I received my monitor in very good condition and believe me it was worth the wait. This monitor i think is the best on the market. The screen resolution is just remarkable and the black in it beats any LCD moitor . I would recomend this moitor to any one just remember ,it has no speakers or tuner just connect it to your cable box and use your bnc to rca adapter and you are good to go .

My next step is to get the HDMI cable and module where i can enjoy real HD quality as we don't have that feature from our cable provider in Barbados .So any one out there who might be interested in this model or any other panasonic brands don 't waste your thoughts just buy it ,it is worth it .

The product was not delivered -- I spent a day waiting at home, missed a day of work.

I was told the product had been lost in transportation.

I asked to be reimbursed. They promised to do so quickly. My credit card has not yet been credited for the amount.

Panasonic TH-42PH9UK 42" Plasma HDTV Monitor.......2007-06-07

I utilized the reviews here and a few other places before deciding on the monitor. Let me start off by stating I am extremely pleased with the monitor. It has, so far, produced a fantastic image onscreen - and this is without HDTV.

Delivery via VANN's was great - cheap (only $30), I waited until the price was right $999. VANN's delivery "rules" were curbside but the driver helped me into the house anyway and helped me inspect the outside and inside of the package. No damage - unit was in perfect condition. I had to work to get delivery when I was home but they held onto it until my day off.

As to the Plasma - yes, even with the warnings on this site I STILL had problems figuring out how to correctly hook it up. I still haven't figured out the component hookup but this is still pretty new for most everyone - in fact, I knew I was in trouble when I was explaining things to the "experts" at Radio Shack and the like. The key things I learned were :

1:) No composite (red/white) inputs at all
2:) S-Video and Component is available (HDMI is extra - I have not added that yet)

S-Video did not work until I figured out how to change inputs - it has three "boards" and it came out of the box on board 1 (that might be HDMI) board 2 was for s-video and once I switched to that, my satellite feed worked. Also, my S-video feed from my receiver also works. Like I stated, component is still not working but I am certain that is MY problem and not the plasma's.

The picture is outstanding. I am still learning more about this unit and I may update this review at a later date. But, so far, I have owned the unit for 1 month or so and things are great.

Great picture/easy set-up/great price.......2007-05-15

It took longer than I hoped for it to arrive ,but that was to be expected because of our remoteness.Hard to track shipping.The plasma arrived in prefect condition not a mark on the box.I removed it from the box, set it up,plugged it into the wall then plugged the Directtv dvr. To my amazement it was up and running. I scrolled thru the format selections ,found the one I liked , done . The manual and menus were easy to use , pleny of adjustments and tweaks if you need or want , works great as a computer moniter.I haven't found anything i dislike about it. Great price.

I purchased the Samsung HPR4252 after allot of online research and reviewing. I also currently own a Panasonic '42 plasma. The first Samsung ordered and received was defective out of the box and since I ordered it through Amazon they were un-willing to replace it or provide a refund do to their policy (make sure you read the return policy). The second one I ordered was from another supplier who gave a 30 day unconditional replacement if the unit proved to be defective. For anything over 27 inches I recommend you purchase the product from a supplier with this type of 30 day replacement. While the Samsung is stylish the picture issues with "ghosting" and pixel distortion is far more prevalent than the Panasonic. At times the picture is fine at others it is clearly distorted. The exception is when viewing HD. In this case the picture is great. I have had the cable company out to check signal quality, called the manufacturer, talked with the vendor and get various answers as to why since this poor quality is also with DVD players and any type of cabling connection I use. The bottom line is that side by side the picture quality is far superior on the Panasonic and I don't have the same pixel or ghosting issues as with the Samsung. The Samsung is more stylish but its features end there. Price wise, Panasonic and Samsung are very comparable. The one feature they both don't have is an easy to use sleep bottom on the remote. Bummer. If I were to do it again I would stick with Panasonic and purchase the product from a vender with good customer support and return policies. You can avoid allot of headaches.

Nice TV, but faulty, and terrible service........2006-06-08

I bought myself a Samsung 42" HD plasma last year, and was very happy with it for the first few months. Then after about six months a row of pixels from the top of the screen down to the centre failed, not showing all of the colours. On an orange background, for instance, they showed up as a bright green line. I contacted my nearest service rep here in Sydney, and it took over TWO MONTHS for them to receive a replacement screen from Samsung. When it finally arrived the new screen now has THREE bad lines on it, now in the middle of the screen. I just got off the phone to Samsung. They had lost the latest order from the service centre, from last month. When I asked how long it will take to replace it from now the operator said "No Idea". When I pressed her she said up to 72 working days.
I don't know if this is a normal level of service for a TV but I know I will never buy a Samsung again.

More than I expected........2006-04-25

I just received this TV and I am amazed at the quality and clarity. I am awaiting the cable HD hook up, but decided to play around with the over the air (OTA) channels. I hooked up an old antenna, the kind you just slide on the cable input---and wow, had it auto select the OTA channels, and was truly amazed. My local network stations come in crystal clear--over the air with an antenna! Very simple. So I am anxious to get the cable HD as well. But even if i did not get cable, the channels I do get are worth the upgrade to this TV. The HD quality is stunning, and I still can't believe I get this quality with an antenna I used about 10 years ago! So far only drawbacks; its heavy and it does not have front inputs, althogh I have not really needed them yet. This HDTV was a good buy and I am extremely satisfied with the results. The delivery was also great. I bought from Vanns, and it was all good. Take the plunge it is well worth it.

Everything I could have asked for.......2006-03-21

First let me say that Amazon provided a great experience for this purchase. My TV was delivered 2 days after my order was placed and the delivery company was courteous and competent. They unpacked the item, brought it to the room and tested it for basic function (power, menu, etc.).

The TV itself is awesome. Colors are accurate (I get no sense I need to adjust them), and the screen is sharp and bright. It took a bit of time to set up inputs, but I was up-and-running in less than 1/2 hour. Some have complained that SD (standard definition) is less than adequate. I agree that is does not hold a candle to HD, it is certainly watchable on this screen (possibly due to the DNie technology). Stuff from TiVo is fine, but "important" recordings such as movies and network dramas (Lost, 24, etc) will most certainly go onto the HD DVR.

I use a universal remote (Logitech Harmony 688 - highly recommended), but the TV remote was logical and easy enough to work. The picture is absolutely gorgeous (NCAA tourney -- just in time, yeah!) and I'm regularly astounded by HD nature shows. Just, wow!

Not sure what else to say, except that after all my research, price-to-performance, and overall value, this TV delivers. Very happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

Built for those who want an affordable large screen TV, the PDP4273M has a built-in NTSC tuner for standard over-air programming, and it displays HDTV channels and signals when connected to an optional receiver or compatible cable/satellite set-top box via the component or single-cable HDMI connections.

It features a 1024 x 1024-pixel resolution, 160-degree viewing angle, super-bright 1400 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and a stunning 3000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) A 2D comb filter separates chrominance (color) from luminance (brightness) information in the video signal for independent processing to improve picture resolution and minimize distortion.

This set also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. Other features include gamma correction, color temperature controls, multiple display modes for video inputs as well as the PC input, and V-Chip parental controls.

Non-existant warranty service at Akai.......2007-01-29

The reason I gave this a one-star is that there's no check box with zero or minus ratings.

I have a 42" plasma Akai and have been waiting two months for a warranty repair, with no resolution in sight. The "service" number in the Akai manual connects you with seems not to be tech-support at all, but an answering service in Ohio. (The corporate HQ is in California!) The "associate" who answers the phone tells you that, "...they will pass your problem along." They also tell you not to expect any action for over a month because they have to do "research" on finding someone in your area to fix your TV. A month or more to look up "TV repair" in the phone book. Right!

When you ask for a name of somebody who is empowered to make decisions at the company, you get the dodge, "We're just an answering service." No phone numbers. No last names. They evidently got off the dime when, on the third phone call, I threatened legal action, after a month of being ignored. But I still can't talk to anyone at Akai to find out the problem or who's in charge. Zero, zero, zero in the feedback dept. Customer service at Akai borders on criminal negligence. Nobody is home.

Six weeks after my first call, a local repair person called me and showed up a week later. Akai really must have done that "research", because he reflects their corporate culture--he doesn't return my phone calls. I suspect they just picked the cheapest service and now are dragging their feet on providing the part. But I don't know. He hasn't gotten back to me for over a week. But at least with him I can personally go to his physical location to find out what's going on.

If you think you can solve this problem by getting an independent warranty, think again. Your contractor still has to deal with the coorporate black hole at Akai to get the part...

WOW.....I had No Idea...and for Under a grand!.......2007-01-22

We Just got this from Sam's Club...$999
Along with a a New DVD player with UpConvert and an HDMI cable
Hooked it up in less than an Hour and loaded a DVD....WOW!
Image quality is Fantastic!...We sat and watched all the Harry Potter movies
in wide screen...
We went from a 36" regular TV to this...wide screen movies on the old tv were no more than 28"...this thing is a minimum veiwing area of 38" and most of the movies popped up at the full 42"...(you gotta see the Disney Movie "CARS" on a plasma 42...just incredible)...I'm not a TV Techie but studied enough to know that I needed Plasma (better for Movies)...and not LCD (better for HD cable and watching Sports)...Image quality is VERY similar anyway...

All you really need now-a-days is a DVD player with UpConvert that has an HDMI output (highest quality signal output from your DVD player)...and the quality is really fantastic...

Even Wal-Mart has DVD players with UpConvert...and the cables and plasma/LCD tv's......

So anyway we are Very Happy with this Not so Familiar Brand Plasma TV and can tell you to purchase it with confidence!
