With its superior picture quality, incredible PDP technology and Pixel Plus display, you'll have crisp, vivid natural pictures from any video source. It's the ultimate digital multimedia station for your home theater or home entertainment center.

Amazon.com Product Description

Save space and enjoy a wonderfully vivid picture with the stylish, 42-inch Philips 42PF7320A widescreen plasma TV, a great choice for your full-featured entertainment center. It has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner for standard television broadcasts, and you can receive high-definition TV right out of the box with the optional, removable CableCARD, which picks up HD (ATSC) broadcasts from your digital cable provider (digital cable subscription required). This set includes a tabletop stand, but it's also wall-mountable with optional kit (VESA compatible). This plasma TV includes an anti-ageing circuit to help prevent screen burn-in and an anti-reflective coating on the screen.

This set uses Philips' exclusive Pixel Plus video processor to increase the number of lines and the number of pixels. The result is razor sharp pictures with incredible detail and dept, every time from any source.

The 42PF7320A has a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution, 160-degree viewing angle, a 1500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and a 10000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) Other features include picture-in-picture display (via component and HDMI connections), auto volume leveler, adjustable color temperature and sharpness, sleep timer, and V-Chip parental controls.

The 3D comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. This set also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

The Active Control function uniquely and intelligently optimizes picture quality by measuring and analyzing the incoming signal to automatically adjust picture quality settings. Active Control with Light Sensor uses a sensor to adjust the picture brightness depending on the room light conditions.

This TV has two built-in stereo speakers that produce 15 watts per channel (for 30 watts of total power), and can produce Dolby Digital virtual surround sound, emulating a 5.1-channel sound field from just two speakers. It also offers the following connections:

The USB connector allows access to multimedia JPEG, MP3, MP3-PRO, and ALB (photo slideshow) files of most USB memory drives and most digital cameras (USB 1.1 memory-class device). Plug the USB connector into the slot at the side of the TV and access your photos or music files.

Tech Talk
CableCARD -- The CableCARD system enables the "Plug-and-Play DTV" functionality as agreed between cable operators and consumer electronics manufacturers. It allows the decoding of encrypted or scrambled content delivered from the cable system. CableCARD functionality includes conditional access and copy protection. A CableCARD-enabled television without a CableCARD inserted receives high-definition standard TV broadcasts. When a CableCARD is inserted, the television receives high-value high-definition, cable programming.

HDMI -- HDMI makes an uncompressed digital RGB connection from the source to the screen. By eliminating conversion to an analog signal, it delivers an unblemished image. The non-degraded signal reduces flicker and leads to a clearer picture. HDMI intelligently communicates the highest output resolution with the source device. The HDMI input is fully backward compatible with DVI sources but includes digital audio. HDMI uses HDCP copy protection.

What's in the Box
Plasma TV, remote control (with batteries), tabletop stand, power cord, printed operating instructions

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy from Philips.......2007-06-09

I purchased this t.v. december of 2005 for $2200, great price at the time. It worked great until about a month ago. First the whole screen would go black for a few seconds. Now the whole bottom half goes black for a few minutes every fifteen minutes or so. Phillips denies this problem even though you can find countless accounts of this problem online.

i bought tv from bjs may 29 first night no problem woke up next morning no sound coming from the tv the volume wasn't working very disapointed i really like the tv. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. i had no promblem returning it to bjs. got my money back.

1 out of 5 stars How to lose $1000..........2007-05-17

I too bought a refurb from Philips and it died like clockwork just outside of the warranty period. If you don't believe me and other reviewers here do your own research on the AVS forums. Read the horror stories. I wish I had done that before I decided to purchase it. Also, ask yourself why there are so many bad refurbs around. ANSWER: Because this TV obviously suffers from some inherent design flaw and has quality control issues. I agree the picture was great for the short time it worked. It also has great hookups for home theater, DVD etc. But how long will it last? Factor in Philips piss-poor customer service for the Total Loss. Never again.

1 out of 5 stars DONT BUY!!! Another Black Screen TV.......2007-05-11

I bought this tv as a refurb off of the Philips Outlet site. Never again will I do that either. First the TV came in with a bar coming down the one screen. This was all fixed under warranty but getting a repair guy to come by and take it and then having philips ship them the parts took a total of 60+ days to get it back (most of the delays was related to philips getting them the correct parts). PHILIPS customer support is TERRIBLE when you try to call and get an update or complain (its like they hear it all the time)!!! Please note that this means that the TV is 2/3rd past its 90 day warranty and I didnt even have any usage of the tv since the first day of purchase! I asked for an extension but they would not even remotely assist. Once that headache was over, and it came back, the tv worked great for about 2 months and now it has that "black screen of death" that everyone complains about (and of course its past the warranty period). I'm going to try and upgrade the Firmware like another said on the AVS forum to see if that works...but never again will I buy a Philips TV or a philips product in general.

3 out of 5 stars Please help! Has anyone experienced this with this tv???.......2007-04-26

I have had this tv since october 05. I got it for 2200$ which wasn't a bad deal back then. But now this tv started doing something WEIRD and it's driving me insane cos I can't find anything like this anywhere. Philips' support is not helping me so I'll give it a try here, maybe one of you experienced the same thing. Occasionally (let's say once every 5-6 hrs of use) the bottom half of the tv turns black (just like it shuts down) for a few seconds (it can be a fraction of a second, up to 10 seconds, usually around 2-3 seconds) and then the picture comes back. It happens for about 2-3 minutes (sometimes it does it once, sometimes it can happen for 5 mins) and then it continues to work fine. The cycle repeats every time. I have no idea what to try, it isn't a big problem but it annoys for sure. Thanks for your help.

Product Description

Samsung's new generation Plasma Flat Panel Displays reach the highest level of performance. Drawing upon years of development and numerous picture enhancement technologies like Samsung's exclusive DNIe, these sets reproduce digital images with stunning clarity and realism. New convenience features like built-in analog tuners, integrated pedestal stand and a loaded jack-pack make set up a snap. With technology and convenience - wrapped up in a gorgeous new cosmetic design - it's sure to be the envy of the neighborhood.

Amazon.com Product Description

Now you can use your PC and enjoy home-theater entertainment all from a single, broad flat-panel screen with brilliant colors and extraordinary contrast. Samsung's 42-inch SPN4235 plasma TV offers high-definition compatibility with HD sources and a native resolution of 852 x 480 pixels. Its direct-digital DVI input works with compatible DTV set-top boxes and PCs, and the EDTV set accepts full HDTV inputs (720p, 1080i) and scales them for progressive 480p viewing.

A built-in analog tuner, a pedestal stand, and a generous array of inputs and outputs make set up a snap, and the SPN4235's widescreen (16:9) display is specially configured to match or approximate the native aspect ratios of your favorite movies, either from DVD or from HDTV broadcasts when the set is hooked up to a DTV receiver (not included).

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile. The SPN4235 is an astoundingly slim 3.1 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (the set includes a convenient pedestal stand, pictured). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

Additional inputs include one HD component-video input (480p/720p/1080i) and one SD component-video input (480i) as well as one each S-video, composite-video, and RF. Samsung's proprietary video-enhancement technology, Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe), performs 3D noise reduction and detail and contrast enhancement for all interlaced (non-HD) sources.

The set also houses a 10-watts-per-channel audio amplifier for use with optional speakers, such as those in your existing stereo or home theater, or Samsung's matching PSM4230 speakers. A dedicated subwoofer output is just what you need to hook the set up with a powered sub for rafter-rattling low frequencies from your favorite movies and music. And, if you're listening in stereo or 2.1 (stereo plus subwoofer), onboard Dolby Virtual surround sound will simulate an enveloping surround experience with no need for rear-channel speakers.

The set's NTSC two-tuner picture-in-picture (side-by-side, split-screen) grants convenient, simultaneous viewing of two TV programs, and a fanless cooling system ensures quiet operation. Other optional accessories include a wall-mount kit (WMN4230) and a pneumatic floor stand (FS420).

What's in the Box
TV, pedestal stand, remote control, remote batteries, 3 ferrite cores, 2 speaker cables, 1 RF audio/video cable, 1 S-video cable, 1 PC cable, 1 component-video cable, 1 composite-video cable, stereo analog audio (left/right RCA) interconnect, detachable AC power cord, user's manual, and registration information.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent value, good first plasma.......2006-09-27

We bought this TV via Amazon in 2004 and have been very pleased overall. At the time it was one of the cheapest 42" plasmas available at around $2800, and now it can be had new for closer to $1500 thanks to the rapid developments in plasmas. If, like us, you don't have HDTV service or immediate plans to upgrade, it's a good choice. DVDs look excellent and standard channels (we use DirecTV and Tivo) look as good as they possibly could.

Keep in mind, though, that this isn't a top of the line and will have some trade-offs. Most notably, the resolution is not true HD even though the TV can accept all HDTV formats and will display them at its own maximum resolution. Also, there are no built in speakers or HDTV tuner, but this isn't an issue when most people will use the unit with a surround system and cable box/satellite receiver. We route all our video sources (DirecTV, DVD, VCR, video game) through a $300 Sony surround system that routes the video into a single cable to the TV and the audio to 6 satellite speakers. If you have HDTV service the set does support the DVI connector but not HDMI, so you may need an adapter.

She set emits an audible buzz that's loudest when the unit first turns on, but never goes away fully. It does not have a noisy internal cooling fan, though, as some early plasmas did. The set also radiates a lot of heat and draws a large amount of power -- more than 350 watts according to the specifications.

Many people mistakenly fault plasmas like this one for premature burn-in when what they're noticing is only temporary. If you see the shadow of a previous image on the TV you need only watch something else for a few minutes and it's gone.

Picture quality will be astounding for those upgrading from a standard CRT TV like us, but it's not perfect. Darks lack clarity and night scenes are often hard to make out. Bright scenes look excellent. We watch standard TV in the "Panorama" mode, which gradually stretches the square image to fit the rectangular screen. We prefer this to watching with gray (not black) bars on the sides of the image, but that mode is available too. DVDs will display in full 16x9 widescreen mode and look beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars Poor service.......2005-02-13

This, like other Samsung products, worked great for a few months. All of a sudden it won't recognize my Mac from the DVI port. The Mac works fine with other monitors, and even a Dell LCD TV. But the Samsung no longer recognizes it. Support from both the Tweeter store where I purchased it and from Samsung direct were absolutely NO help. I would stay away from Samsung and Tweeters for this reason.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing set for the money.......2005-01-26

I can't complain about this set at all. I originally had a used Daewoo plasma from sams club and it sucked big time, heated up the room like crazy, and constantly had ghosting. I returned it at sams club and bought a samsung spn4235 at circuit city because they had a promotion (2,700 dollars) plus a 300 dollar gift certificate. They were getting rid of the model to get in new ones. The only thing I was let down about was it was EDTV but I found out HDTV models were a heck of a lot more expensive. When I first got the model it had this weird clayface effect and the picture wasn't what I expected however I adjusted the settings with Avia home theatre setup and I was very impressed with dvd picture. I thought this was as good as it was going to get but recently I ordered HDTV through dish network. I thought the standard channels looked like crap but I was able to set my settings at 1080i and 16:9 and hdtv channels were amazing. The picture was very lifelike and colorful and it fit my whole screen without stretching. I watched the discovery channel and the DNIE option is great for hdtv viewing. The unit does decent with blacks but not the best. The set definitely can provide a great picture but every tv can only provide as good a picture as the source it gets from. My suggestion is if you go hdtv use either component or dvi and avoid svideo and rca cables. The price is great and if your looking to save money and have a good picture I recommend the unit. There is a slight buzzing noise but I haven't noticed it. Don't bother with the side speakers go with surround sound it will enhance your experience much more. Overall a very good unit and I am definitely not disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars great price and 2 year warranty.......2004-05-22

Great picture and great sound. Especially when you hook up a subwoofer to the set. I also purchased the optional speakers which have good overall quality. I have read some other reviews regarding some buzzing with the set but I have found that when I have hooked up the speakers there are 3 screws on the side of the set. If these are overtightened this could cause some buzzing noise. By loosening the screws you can make the buzzing go completely away. It worked on my set. hope this wil help if you get some buzzing on you sets enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Bright and Bold.......2004-05-19

I purchased this Plasma for a friend and have had it in my home for 2 weeks. I too have looked at many plasmas in the stores and compared. I have to say this one has a beautiful picture. Compared to true HDTV plasmas in the store, this EDTV has a great picture. It is hard to spend the extra money for subtle differences that are hard to see even side-by-side. Most of our viewing is cable or DVD movies so I can't rationalize the extra money. Even with a cable input, the picture is great. It is clear and has little "noise" or "graininess" considering it is a cable signal. Friends come over and remark what a great picture.

Internal amp for speakers is fine. The Virtual Dolby does give good impact to the 2 speaker sound. For DVD's I use my separate surround sound system. One thing Samsung forgot on this model are audio output jacks to connect internal tuner sound to your surround sound system. So many other inputs, I don't know why they forgot those outputs.

This is one of the few Plasmas that comes with a 2 year warrenty in home! The appearance of the TV is perfect in our home and looks great on or off. We are likeing it soo much, I will probably buy one for myself now that I have seen and used it my home.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2006-05-15

I purchase my Magnavox plasma tv EDTV from Circuit City. It was a great buy. It was an open box item with the remote and user manual missing. I only paid $1200. But was more impressive with the Magnavox support. The tech support reps are very knowledgeable of there products and walking you through all questions and problems. The clarity and sound the tv are excellent. I had always been a Toshiba electronic customer but was very satisfied with this Magnavox purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Magnavox Customer Service sucks.......2006-02-01

The day after this T.V. was installed at my house, the sound quit working. I contacted Magnavox and asked told them what was going on with the T.V. they said it must be my DVD player, or my Cable box was broken or both, they told me to try new cables, try a different DVD player, I tried everything they told me. I did ask if I can just take this T.V. back to the store, they said no, and gave me a reference number and told me to contact thier service contractor and he will come out to my house and repair the T.V. they even suggested that maybe I was so dumb that I can not read diagrams and hook up this T.V. properly. It has been a month now that the service contractor has had my Plasma, I have tried calling Magnavox serveral times this last time they told me that the reason why non of thier consumer relations agents have not contacted me is that I am on a list and have not been waiting long enough for it to be assigned to anyone yet, OK if they are that backed up with problem what kind of crap are they selling maybe they should hire a few more agents. Well after being told that I just need to wait my turn, oh yes she did she told me that I should have just taken this T.V. back to the store. I felt like my head was going to explode from anger, I told her that I called them the day it quit working and the service tech told me that I can not take it back to the store that the T.V. warrenty stated that parts and labor are included and that is probably a simple fix you know how hard cables can be and all DUHHH. Now I am sooo very happy that she is now asking me why I didn't take it back and get something else. Well if you want some abuse and a T.V. that doesn't have any sound I say buy this, but if you like to feel good about your ability to hook up 2 cables, and like the experience of enjoying 2 sense Sight and Sound then don't buy Magnavox.

5 out of 5 stars My AKAI PDP4247.......2007-01-14

I bought the first 42" monitor that came to my local electronic store. It happened to be an AKAI. All my friends said "PLASMA" will not last. It's only EDHD or enhanced HD. Well friends can be wrong. Mine has out lived all of thier choices and it supports 1080I and was cheaper than what they bought. I'll match my AKAI PDP4247 Plasma aginst anything on the market, the image is outstanding. It has every connection you'll need including VGA & HDMI and has seperate inputs for sound for what ever video input you use. The manuel is not the best but the monitor is every thing I hoped it would be and more. The lowest price. Outstanding image, can be hooked up to anything. For 3 years now it has done nothing but amaze me. I now use a HD satilite reciever to feed it and I can't stop staring at the screen. I know AKAI may sound like an off brand but I recommend it. This product delivers the best bang for the buck.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Picture.......2007-05-29

While shopping for an HDTV I found Amazon reviews very helpful so here is mine. Also CNET.com is a good site to do research.

I've never owned an HDTV before and did alot of research. I'm not a "videophile" so here are my educated consumer comments.

I clearly found that the picture depth and black/contrasts are significantly better in plasmas' vs. LCD. Also, while Pioneer has the best reputation for plasma picture quality, I actually liked the Panasonic better when looking side-by-side and the price points are $100's lower.

If you are interested in LCD, I'd go with Sony. However for plasma, Panasonic is unbeatable.

I brought this TV home about a week ago and here is what I have discovered:

a) the picture quality leaves you breathless - we have HDTV through our cable company and I've never seen quality, sharpness and image clarity this good. Even shows that are not HD, are outstanding on the model.

b) the anti-reflective filter works great and there is hardly any light reflection when viewing. Well worth a few extra $$.

c) the side speakers are very clear and enjoyable to listen to - although this does add about 5' to the overall width of the TV so measure beforehand.

d) we have NOT had any of the "burn-in" that you hear about for most plasma's

I highly recommend this TV and although I did not buy it from Amazon, the current price point on Amazon is competitive. I've also found the most retailers will bargain but you have to ask "can we get a better price point if I want to buy today".

This is a fun TV to watch. The colors when my kids watched the original Willie Wonka were incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A sleeper to watch out for!!.......2007-06-03

I have been researching TV's for quite awhile trying to determine the best one for me. I have watched the technology continually improve and am amazed by the progress. I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a television and was certain I was going to purchase a DLP set. I made one of my many trips to the local electronics store to do more comparisons of certain models I had picked out and had not even considered an LCD TV, let alone an LG television. I was walking along the displays when my girlfrined actually pointed out the TV to me. I took a brief look and didn't see anything special and it was only upon closer inspection that I discovered what an awesome TV the LG 42LB5D is.

First, I set all of the neighboring 42" Televisions to the same HDTV signal (which anyone can do- just select the input on the tv's until they all show the same signal). I was never a fan of LCD TV's due to the pixelation in fast scenes-usually sports. This TV did the best job of displaying fast-moving sequences with very little pixelation, even better than the nearby Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sharp models. My curiosity was piqued. I don't know if it is because of the proprietary software they use to render the image or if it is because the LCD panel has a 5ms response time. In case you don't know, a 5ms response time for an LCD panel is very, very fast. Alot of the other manufacturers have an 8ms response time. The faster the response time of the panel, the better it is able to render fast changing images.

Next, I switched the channels to a standard definition signal. Since most of what is on cable and satellite is broadcast in SDTV, it would be a good idea to pick a TV that does a good job of displaying that signal without making it look so bad. This television does an amazing job of displaying SDTV signals. Of course, it'll never be as good as a plain old CRT TV, but it does one heckuva job! Now I was getting really impressed.

The colors were bright and looked as good as the brand new Samsung LNT-4265, though the Samsung had a little deeper blacks. I don't think the extra few hundred dollars I would have had to pay would be worth that. Especially considering the better pixelation performace I noticed on the LG. (Pixelation annoys the heck out of me, by the way.)

I started checking out the specs. It has a clear QAM tuner that allows you to receive digital cable signals without the cable box. That usually means you can get all of the local network (ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, PBS) hi-def and secondary digital channels for free over your cable line (as long as you're not using a cable box connected to your TV). After I took it home, I found I had all of those channels. It has 3 HDMI inputs. It accepts 1080p via HDMI, Component, and VGA inputs. The VGA input was especially important to me because I have the XBOX 360 HD-DVD player and the only way to view movies in 1080p is via the VGA output from the 360. If not for that, I'd only be able to view my HDDVD's in 720p or 1080i.

I am incredibly pleased with this purchase and I gotta thank my girlfriend for noticing it or it would have slipped right past me. I know to take a review from a website with a grain of salt because you never really know who is writing it. The only thing I can tell you is to find a store that has one on display and do exactly what I did. I guarantee you'll see what I'm talking about.

2 out of 5 stars Nice TV until you have issues.......2007-06-19

Overall I was generally happy with the TV until it broke. It died with a pop and then wouldn't display anything. It was under warranty and so I began the process of trying to get it repaired. Their technical support and service is well awful at best and is totally unacceptable. After repeated calls they haven't yet resolved getting me even an appointment to get a service tech out to inspect the issue let alone order parts and fix it. Today I was told that they were looking for a tech and would receive a call 5-10 days from now to setup an appointment. I live in a major metro area in the US, so this simply isn't acceptable behavior for a vendor of consumer electorics if they offer on-site repairs. A quick survey of folks I work with has shown that other vendors offer same day set-up for appointments and most were within 4-7 days visited by a tech to have the repair done.

So if you have issues be warned that you may have trouble getting them resolved beyond the simple stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Too Good To Believe???.......2007-06-19

I bought this tv on June 9th and had it delivered on the 11th. At first I thought this tv was a great bargain becauase of the price. And then eventutally the cost of the tv begins to make sense. Now for one thing, this tv is defintely very cheap and a great bargain and very affordable for those of you wanting not to spend so much on a plasma. However, I experienced burn-in problems within five days of using this tv and I hardly even used it. I played my xbox 360 for abt an hr & half n it had several images burnt into the screen. BUT, if youve done ur research on plasmas then u know that most plasmas if not all of them have this issue. Also, I have time warner cable and I used an HDMI cable to connect the reciever to the tv. It worked fine but then when i changed channels on the reciever, the tv would completely flip out n show static n make a loud buzzing sound. I would have turn it off n on for it to stop, but it did this again n again. I could've exchanged the reciever with time warner or maybe even bought a new HDMI cable, but both of these worked GREAT with my previous LCD HDTV (Olevia 32"). And then the burn-in issue emerged in a matter of days so i just returned it and now im looking at sony's and samsung's.

So, All in all, I would recommend this tv simply because of the cost, but just beware!!! And if you plan on playing games on it...DONT BUY IT! So good luck to those of you who do end up buying this. :)
