Customer Reviews:
Great MP3 Player.......2007-07-02
I bought mine last year and I'm just getting around to writing my review. I love it. It's a great unit and for a good price. Creative MP3's (I had a Zen Micro before this on) upload twice as fast as my son's Ipod, and I have had no problems at all with my Creative MP3 freezing up like the Ipods do. With that said... Creative could do a better job with their power cords and accessories. The power cord is kind of funky and accessories are very limited.
Great little device for a great little price.......2007-07-01
I'm no hard core user, so for me, this is the perfect device. I have about 2000 songs on it so far and it has been working perfectly. It freezes up every once in a while but the reset button takes care of that. Some folks are putting a bad review on this and I don't think that is fair. It's an inexpensive player, what do you expect? It's no Ipod, but I'd still take this over an Ipod any day. I've had it for about a year now. I haven't had any complaints worth mentioning.
Pretty good actually....maybe.......2007-06-18
I've had this Zen for almost a year (i got it last August) and it's been working pretty well seeing that I've dropped it way to many times to count. Since this is the only brand I've ever bought a decent mp3 player from I can't compare it to any Ipod but my friends. I definiately think its better.
You can download songs from more than one device (as said in many reviews before, but I'm reassuring you), seeing that I loan the thing to friends and they put whatever they think I'd like on it and they all have different players(thanx guys). The screen is really great. The colours show up very well in the pictures. I don't like that you can't see your album art at the same time a song is playing. It has to be a picture. And you can't listen to music while viewing pictures either, but hey thats okay. And I've never really mastered the art of making a slide show, but I don't really need one.
The alluminum back and sides get scratched up pretty bad it you drop it onto concrete or asphalt and the screen gets scratched up pretty easily if you don't have a cover on it, but it's still in pretty good shape for me being a klutz and letting my friends borrow it. The buttons still work fine and everything and the touchpad still picks up. The cool thing(in my opinion) is that you have to use your finger on the touch pad, you can't use a pencil or anything but your finger, which is cool cuz it has to sense that its a finger.
I have over 2000 songs on this thing and over 300 pictures and its barely dented to memory which is awesome. It has like 17 GB left which rocks. It really does hold alot. But it's realy stupid how when you get a brand new mp3 and you plug it in and it has like 19.75 GB and it's completely empty though the thing is supposed to have 20 GB.
The sound on it's fine, but I can complain. Since I go through headphones really fast(I break them so easily) I constantly have to take the headphones out of the jack hole(hehe jack-hole) thingy which made the little plastic thing that's in the hole that holds the headphones in place and presses down so the headphones connect to the player get loose and break out. So everytime I take the headphones out that piece comes with it and I have to make sure I don't lose it and always put it back or the sound sounds like crap (it won't play on the right side and it sounds far off and distant). Because that little thingy(I don't know what to call it) is loose that sound quality is much worse even with it in there. The headphones don't connect as well so it sounds a lot more far off and distant.
A friend used to have one of the dell mp3's and it weighed about the same as the Zen and was thicker. Compared to an ipod the zen weighes a lot more and if ur not used to it, it can get tiring. And it's so heavy that it slides off things easily and drops heavily to the ground. I'm suprised mine hasn't broken yet.
As with most things as they get older they don't work as well, the battery life on the zen drops greatly as it ages a little bit. I can listen to the thing for at the most seven hours now when I could listen to it forever without the battery even moving when I first got it. And now I'm having problems with it charging. It won't charge at all unless the battery is completely dead and it won't charge all the way up which sucks because I listen it this thing a lot.I don't know if thats normal or if its a defect.
I would reccomend this to somebody if they took care of the thing and didn't do stupid things with it(who knows what my friends did to it). I'm sure it would last ages if you actually took care of the thing and charged it at the right times and everything.
Don't get this if you donn't want to have to take care of it. Or do and just watch the thing lose its life.
Get it if you want a cheap 20 GB Photo mp3 player that you might have a few little problems with but nothing so bad you have to take it back.
Live with it and enjoy the ZEN.
Creative's User Interface.......2007-05-21
I find it interesting that folks spend so much time knocking the Creative UI, and pile the usual 'whoppies' on Apple for it UI. I find it interesting because Apple had to settle suit with Creative over patent infringement; the issue - the iPod menu is based on the Creative menu. Apple went to Creative to co-develop the iPod, Creative said NO (somebody at Creative must have suck on a bullet for that decision), so Apple 'borrowed' the UI.
So, if you want to beat-up on Creative and tell everyone about how great the Ipod is - please find a new angle, NOT the UI (menu) and NOT the Touch Strip. Honest iPod folk will tell you that controlling the touch ring is just as "Hit & Miss", as controlling the Touch Strip is.
I'll also note that "professional" review/ers have made a significant mistake in judging Digital Audio Player products. All players should receive two scores; the first for the player by itself, the second as a system, meaning hardware plus software. The simple reality is, that currently - no one is prepared to match the iPod 'experience', so when it comes to the system - the Pods have the lead, and everyone else is playing catch-up. Note: the 'pros" seem to like the Sansa e200R (NOTE: R seies) system series a lot. When it comes to hardware ONLY, there are several players that can best the Pods, including Creative, Sansa, and Toshiba. And if you are into OGG and/or FLAC you have to go elsewhere, as none of these four companies service these Codecs.
And to all a good night...
a.
Good features, seems reliable.......2007-04-11
After some few mistakes I was able to learn the navigation system, which is not that obvious. I was unable to find how to download a video yet, although I am not that keen on having it.
Good performance at a reasonable price. The human interface needs some inprovement. I guess, after playing with an iPod, everything seems more challenging.

Amazon.com Product Description
Sturdy, versatile, and remarkably compact, given its voluminous storage capacity, iAudio's X5 portable multimedia device is sure to be a hit. The 20 GB audio/video player and recorder can store about 5,000 songs (4 minutes each, 128 kbps) i n a nearly unparalleled choice of formats, from MP3 and WMA to linear (uncompressed, CD-quality) WAV files, Ogg Vorbis f iles (which sound a bit better than MP3 for files of comparable size), as well as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec, compr essed but designed for 1:1 encode/decode). The X5 can recognize up to 2,000 folders and 10,000 individual files, and its super power-saving circuit provides up to 14 hours continuous playback on a full charge.
Coolest of all? You can import photos taken from most digital cameras and view them on the player's 160 x 128-pixel, 260 ,000-color TFT LCD thanks to OTG ("on the go"), the player's USB host feature. (Certain digital cameras are not supporte d; see www.iaudio.com for compatibility.) Create your own logo or download logos from the iAudio web site. You can also set a picture of your choosing as wallpaper.
Click here to view a detailed list of parts. |
The player also offers FM radio listening and recording (with one-touch tuning presets), audio recording through either a built-in microphone or analog line-in input terminals, and the ability to read text as well as images--you can even vi ew text, though not images, while listening to music.
Use the included JetAudio software to convert various video files to MPEG-4 (up to 15 fps), then enjoy the transcoded vi deo files on the X5. Another program, JetShell, performs CD ripping and file conversion and facilitates music playback.
< P> The X5 provides direct encoding, too, by which you can capture the output of an external audio device. This means you co nnect the output terminal of an external audio device to the recording (input) terminal of the X5 using a bidirectional stereo cable (supplied), letting you load material from components like a DVD player, a cassette deck, a minidisc player , a turntable, or a TV.
And, with the unit's built-in, high-fidelity microphone, the X5 can record speech with the quality of dedicated voice re corders--perfect for important meetings, lectures, and notes to self.
Onboard sound processing includes BBE Sound enhancement, BBE Mach3Bass, MP Enhance (designed to compensate for sound los t in MP3 compression), a 5-band adjustable equalizer, and 3D Surround (3-dimensional sound that gives the sound a wide s ense of space).
What's in the Box
iAudio player, stereo earphones, a subpack, an installation CD (JetShell and JetAudio), a USB 2.0 cable, a line-in recor ding cable, a USB host adapter, an AC power adapter, a user's manual, and warranty information.
Customer Reviews:
nice mp3/video player.......2007-05-25
Nice to see a US quality made player. I actually took this player apart and it is put together with quality craftsmanship. I was impressed. The user manual was not very helpful, I didn't care because i usually don't look at them anyway. After I loaded the software into my PC and connected the USB cable everything made sense. Nice video converter program, easy to use.
Drag & drop uploading just like moving files around in Windows. You can drag files from any PC in the network.
Glad i bought it.......2007-05-24
I'm glad I bought this product last year July. So far, i've had no problems at all with it... Actually, once i had to use the "reset" feature because it froze up while trying to play a video file. I guess its cause this thing has a hard drive in it? Other than that i use it to watch full length movies during Southwest flights which i go on a weekly basis.
I've had no issues with battery life... I charge it about once a week. But if I ever do have an issue with the battery, I hope i get the excellent customer service that Cowon is known for.
The sound quality on this player is awesome. However I did replace the earphones with the Bose ones a few months ago... they fit better and sound better in my ears.
I took a small gamble purchasing this brand over the better known ones.. and it's paid off so far. I figure, if i get one or two years of good use out of any new technology product, its worth it. So far it's been worth every penny.
One of my favourite gadgets.......2007-03-13
Positive Points:
- Excellent sound
- Lots of features
- Good interface
- File managment is just like in windows
- Radio reception is very good
- Works great as a tape recorder
I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the following negative points:
- PC sometimes doesn't recognize the device
- Connectivity to PC and other devices is somewhat of pain beacuse of the adapter (have to carry it around everywhere)
- Screen resolution isn't good enough for playing movies, but heck, I was never interested in it's mpeg4 feature.
Bottom line - I'm Happy.
perfect sound and picture but not convinient download.......2007-01-18
V good quality picture and sound, easy to use, the only problem I have is to download music from computer, it uses its own program and it takes too much time to transfer music to apropriate format. I like the way it is build v.solid looks nice. Yes I would buy it again.
Overall great player.......2006-12-30
Bought this product refurbished from Cowon for around $190 in July 2006 (about 6 months ago). I've had a lot of success with the X5. The sound quality is absolutely superb, and it plays just about any music file you can throw at it out of the box. One of the major reasons I bought this player is that I use Linux, and I didn't want to *have* to use any fancy software to put music on the player. The X5 acts just like a removable hard drive, so you just plug it in, and you can access it (just a simple 'mount' in Linux).
6 months in, and with it already being refurbished in the first place, I'd expect quite a dip in battery life; this is not the fault of the X5, just the fault of the Li-ion batteries themselves. However, I still get, easily, over 12 hours of music play. In my experience, people who have Li-ion batteries often don't know how to really take care of them and leave them in the heat or cold (they should really be kept at lower temperatures, but thermal shock is a problem, so room temperature is best), drain them down all the way (that's bad) or keep the recharger plugged in while the battery is already all full (also bad). They should really be kept between 20-80% full to maximize battery life. I managed to squeeze out an extra 30% (at least, probably more) of battery life by installing an open-source firmware called Rockbox, which also allows me to play a bunch of games on my X5, including a tetris-clone, a "bust a move"/"puzzle bobble" clone and even Doom (really).
Other highlights: the case is very rugged, it has been dropped from upwards of five feet onto surfaces including concrete on accident at times; the included ear buds are actually pretty decent; it can get very loud with no noticeable distortion until at least -3 or even -2 dB (typically listen around -40 to -35 dB, can get up to +3 dB, but notice some distortion, as to be expected).
My main complaint is the awful joystick interface. This is a place where iPod really has them beat. The joystick takes longer to scroll with and can stick at times (scroll times have been greatly decreased for me by using Rockbox). Additionally, just in the last couple days, the joystick has seemed to actually break: I have to push hard to get the joystick to register a "left"; all the other directions are fine. Of course, this could have been expedited by all the tetris-clone gaming.

GARBAGE!!!!! DO NOT BUY!!!!!.......2006-09-23
Doesn't even deserve the one star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought this for my daughter for a Christmas present last year. It never worked at all. RCA support SUCKS!! I spent hours on the phone with RCA & didn't get anywhere. I always thought RCA made good products but have learned otherwise from this miserable experience. I sent this product back to RCA for a refund about a month ago & haven't heard anything. I will feel lucky if I do get a refund after reading these reviews. I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER RCA/THOMSON PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE & WOULD ADVISE ANYONE WHO READS THIS TO DO THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF BEATING YOUR HEAD AGAINST A WALL IS FUN FOR YOU THIS IS THE PRODUCT FOR YOU.
Waste of money.......2006-09-15
My wife bought this for me for Christmas last year. It doesn't work - for a whole number of reasons. After reading the other reviews here I'm afraid to send it back to RCA. I can't even get in touch with anyone there I have to send it blind and hope they take care of it. Don't waste your money.
The One I Had To Let Go..........2006-09-15
The Lyra was my first PVP machine and I picked one up in January 2004 not long after its release. I was enamored with its sleek screen with dazzling video, cool interface, respectable audio fidelity, and other amenities - including the ability to record directly from a video source. I auditioned one for a month before after much hand wringing, forced to return to Best Buy just before my 30 day return was about to expire. There were a number of factors which led me to do so; glitches with the interface, video issues, system freezes, etc. Finally, I experienced a complete lock-up of the interface that not even the pin reset could undo. Mind you, my Lyra wasn't abused in the least - never dropped, rocked, or jolted. I *really* liked the Lyra even in spite of its considerable flaws but had no choice but to return it. I've moved on since then to a much more issue free Creative Zen Vision M and have no regrets...but you know what they say about your "first love". Sigh.
Good Idea, poorly made product.......2006-08-11
The toggle switches are poorly made, first they were very difficult to use and now they have both broken off!!! This product is not worth the money!!!

Nice little player.......2007-01-18
I bought my Gmini 402 about 2 months ago. I love it. I use it to play MP3's, take pictures and shoot videos. It also doubles as a portable hard disk drive. I've found the player to be reliable, the sound quality to be good and the picture quality to be good. The player allows for the creation of playlists and for the export of playlists from your computer to the player. It can be connected to a Windows machine as a windows device or as a hard disk drive. I found it easier to use the device connected to the computer as a hard disk drive. I found the device to be relatively easy to use. I've knocked the player around a few times, but it still keeps playing. The only other device of this type that I ever had was an RCA Lyra which I also liked. I haven't used and IPOD, but from what I have read this device seems to be in many ways superior to an IPOD that would be in the same price range. The creation of playlists could be a little more intuitive, but overall I give this machine 5 thumbs up.
Terrible Quality.......2006-12-13
I recieved my Gmini 402 as a gift a year ago. After only a few months it had already broken (the headphone jack broke). Though I sent it in and had it repaired, when it came back it could now only hold 18.3 gb rather than 20gb! I called customer service (finding the number was an almost impossible feat) and the person on the line dismissed me saying that I didn't know anything and that nothing was wrong.
I find it a difficult gadget to use and it takes a long time to find what you're looking for. The more you have in it, the longer it takes to find the song/album you're looking for. The video screen is just to small to be practical and it only plays files that are supported by Windows Media Player so forget about any RealMedia or Quicktime files you may have.
I would not recomend Archos as a company to buy anything from. And I certainly would not recomend this product to anyone. Period.
Functionality: 4 Reliability: 1 Customer Service: -2.......2006-09-22
The device worked well and was a joy to use. For about two months. It then refused to turn on. I had to send it back to Archos. About a month later I receive a replacement. The replacement had a shoddy D-pad and couldn't recharge. Obviously nobody even checked to see if it worked before sending it to me. Had to send it back. It's been about 5 weeks so far and I have to keep calling, listening to some lady who only works there 2 days a week complain about all the problems they have with the warehouse. I regret this purchase more than anything I've ever bought.
Save money.......2006-06-30
you can save a [...] load of money by buying this from dish netowrk, they call it the pocket dish, but it does the same exact things, the only different thing is that it is dvr compatible, so if you have dish network, you can plug it into you dish dvr and put tv shows in it. its only 150$ over there. thats over 50% cheaper.
Worst product ever purchased.......2006-05-12
After searching around and looking at other reviews of this product I decided it would be an excellent media player. I purchase the product and was very pleased with how the product functioned. After 8 days of casual use the product would not start up past the Archos welcome screen. After 3 attempts at getting the RMA department to get my address information correct for a RMA, I then sent the product in early Jan 2006. After a week I received an email from the service department to notify me that the repair would cost $80 without a proof of purchase (PoP) within a year that it was received my their department. No problem since the product broke after a week of use, so it was well within Archos 1 yr warranty. I first attempted to send the PoP by email to the department without any luck. I then faxed the PoP to the RMA department on four separate dates. Each time I called the RMA department the status of my RMA was still "Waiting on PoP." I was told many times that RMA department manager was looking into the issue and that he would call me back. I began to get sick of hearing that a manager would call me back. After several attempts to actually speak to one of these managers I finally talked to Paul. Paul gave me his email address at Archos so that I could email the PoP directly to him. Paul also explained to me that the Service department had been moved to another location. This was the first time I had heard of this information. He also explained that the Service department had just started shipping out repaired items in the last couple of weeks. This is April now. No wonder the RMA department was never getting my PoP to the Service department. The Service department did not exist at the time. What kind of RMA department has no idea that their Service department is not operational? Also, what kind of company closes their Service department to move it to another location? Archos. So, I start to feel like things are going to be moving. The next time I call the RMA department I find that my product is fixed but has not been shipped out. You would think that their Service department would ship the items they've had their inventory the longest, first. Not Archos. I'm still waiting on my product. That's right its now 11 May 2006. My current status of my RMA is that a Archos RMA department manager is looking into it and will call me back. Do not waste your time with this product.

The best portable AV player.......2006-05-16
I bought it when it first went on sale at walmart.com in Jan, 2006. Design is superb with the clamshell protecting the screen. It handles most formats without fuss and without requiring too much effort. Picture quality is outstanding and sound quality dizzying in its capability. The one nitpick is that they haven't shipped the HD cable that would allow HD hookup to a HD-capable TV. Other than that it's been fantastic.
It's Fantastic.......2006-04-18
I've been using it now for testing purposes at work and i've been taking it home everynight, the speakers are amazing and can easily fill a room with background music. No distortion atall.
The screen looks amazing and everyone i have showed has been amazed at the quaility of the picture.
It has not crashed once on me and it's played all video files i have tried apart from wma but firmware update will fix that easy.
The output to TV is fantastic and i have tried it on a HDTV but with only (red, Yellow and White) cables i dont see how it can give HDTV out.it looks nice none the less.
The menu is nice and easy to use and it has an ipod style volume/skip feature thats touch sensitive. it's great.
I would however not pay $500 for it and think around $350-$400 is more respectable.
I do love it though and could'nt live without it now.
any questions let me know

DONT BUY THIS THING.......2006-04-25
I got this after my creative zen sleek, i should have stuck with creative. this thing is a piece of junk if you just want an mp3 player.Firstly you cannot play songs from an album by track number, which surely you should be able to do,without having to put numbers in front of the names which is a pain if you have a big library of music. Even after i upgraded the firmware to version 3.0. secondly when watchin videos the backlight doest stay on without you haveing to set it so when you go back to listening to music you have to change the backlight setting. As a video player its nothing special as the screen is too small.the menu system is terrrible, there is no quick way of getting the songs you want.there's no shuffle mode.it trys to do lots of things but does each one badly.even the tetris sucks on it. stick with creative or iriver id you want a good mp3 player.
it is not recognized by my PC.......2005-11-09
please help, i bought this stuff coz its cool features, but the moment i arrive home (bought it overseas) the device was not recognized by my PC..what should i do? pls help..thanks
Cool Stuff.......2005-09-30
I have Apple iPOD 40 GB, but the features which Samsung YH-J70SB provides is amazing. Apple iPOD does not come any close to this MP3 player model.
I always want a tool which can provide me FM radio, MP3 Player, Watch moives, Store data on the tool, watch photos, calander, clock, etc....
One cannot find all these features in any MP3 players availabe in the market.
I would give rating of 5 out 5. As feature wise and sound qualtiy wise it is 'THE' product to have.
