Though this little nipper might not have the barking volume and biting features of some of the bigger boomboxes on the market, it's cute enough to make you want to take it everywhere and small enough to easily go with you. Sporting a durable silver plastic casing that's accented in royal blue, the RP-7968 packs a lot of power in an attractive package. The machine has three basic functions: CD player, cassette recorder/player, and AM/FM stereo radio.

The CD player has all the features you'd expect from a model in this category--the ability to pause a track, skip forward and back, and review or cue through individual tracks. In addition, the RP-7968 has a shuffle feature that will randomly pick songs for you. A repeat function allows you to hear one favorite song over and over or to repeat the whole CD. When you use both the shuffle and repeat features together, the RP-7968 continues to play as long as the power holds out. One drawback we discovered was that the unit is surprisingly susceptible to skips when you move it during CD play.

The cassette feature on this unit offers standard playback, as well as recording from either CD or radio. However, it does not offer a built-in microphone or an external microphone jack. The radio portion is limited by manual (as opposed to digital) tuning and a tiny frequency legend, but RCA's Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) helps bring in those hard-to-find stations.

The machine also offers an intuitive Dynamic Bass Boost System (DBBS) button in lieu of Tone, Bass, and Treble knobs. There are two built-in, clear-sounding 4-inch speakers that, at full volume with DBBS, were a little overwhelmed by the internal amplifier. If you'll be using this unit in the den or the workplace, it's likely to have everything you need.

2 out of 5 stars Not the usual RCA quality.......2004-05-26

I am quite disappointed with this stereo, considering most all of my other RCA products have performed well. The sound is OK, but the radio tuner allows the stations to "fade", requiring constant retuning. The CD player turntable spins, but will no longer read any CD at all. The ac cord connection is a sloppy fit, allowing the power to disconnect at will. Save your money, buy something else.....this unit appears to suffer from poor build quality throughout.

3 out of 5 stars Ok...but you can probably do better if you try!.......2001-12-15

I have had this boombox for a little over a year...at first I thought it was awful! After playing two or three cd's acceptably, it would begin to skip uncontrollably! Then I thought I would use a laser lens cleaner and it worked well for about another ten cd's. With regular lens cleaning it is acceptable.

The sound is not fantastic. It is overwhelmed by any musical flourishes the artist you listen to may care to indulge in! The speakers cannot handle loud sounds...Before you think I am punishing this poor stereo with heavy metal...It becomes screechy with Andrea Bocelli or The Moody Blues!

The radio on mine is quite good. The cassette player/recorder is nice as well. I would have liked a microphone; but I have no complaints in this area.

If you have the opportunity to shop around...buy a slightly better portable stereo. They abound. I did not get around to
returning it while I still had the chance; so I have learned to "work with the cd issues"! Really it is not awful...but it is not very good. Shop around!

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money!.......2001-08-11

This CD player is the worst piece of junk I have ever purchased. It didn't take long for me to find out how badly made it was either. First of all, the radio doesn't pick up radio stations very well. A station that I used to listen to quite clearly on my old $29.99 radio came in very weakly on this one. I've only had the item seven months and the CD player is broken. The antenna always wobbled and looked very cheaply made. As I was adjusting it one day, it bent and then snapped right off!

This is the most cheaply made item I've ever bought. I had my old $29.99 radio for over ten years. This item is already falling apart in eight months. Don't buy this item unless you want to waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars Overpriced, shoddy sound, flimsy.......2001-06-21

I bought this for my job so I could listen to music while I worked in the warehouse. 3 (three) weeks after I bought it the tape player broke. No problem, I'll just listen to cds, right? Well, that worked for a couple of months. Now it will only play a cd that I *just* opened. After that one play, it skips like it's an old cd. This boom box is not worth [the money]. The sound is tinny in the high range and anything remotely resembling bass makes the speakers make armpit noises. I was not expecting concert-like digital audio type sound, but something better than am radio. As you can tell I wouldn't recommend this one. Go to a store and try one out, and SAVE YOUR RECEIPT! A lesson hard learned.

4 out of 5 stars Great boombox, great value, not for portable use!.......2000-11-13

For a present, I recently got an RCA RP7968 Boombox. Its really great! The RCA has large, easy to use, readable buttons. It plays CD's and cassettes with ease, and it also is very stylish(not as much as some Sony's and Aiwa's, though). Although, there are few downsides. First off, it really is not for portable use. It eats away battery's in no time. In addition, it is pretty heavy for a boombox. I still do reccomment this RCA boombox...as I said in my title it has a great value and great quality, but if you spend a few bucks more, you might be able to find a better one for your needs.
