Amazon.com Review
While the curved profile of the red Wilson WCDBR90R is completely charming, it's the compact size and foldaway handle that make this portable, multifunctional sound system perfect for travel and workouts. A manual rotating knob lets you select between cassette tape, CD, or AM/FM radio functions.
The top-loading CD player has a push-button, slow-release lid and a three-second interval between pressing Play and hearing music. Sometimes we had to press the play button more than once to get a CD to start, but by and large it was reliable. The unit features forward and reverse functions that let you skip through tracks while reading a digital display. There's also a pause button and a one-button repeat that loops either a single track or the whole disc.
Twisting the tuner dial knob displayed radio stations to the second decimal point in both AM and FM frequency bands. The volume is also knob based--no annoying push-button volume adjustments here!--and it's easy to crank the boombox to its full, and rather loud, 2-watt output. A bass boost circuit amplifies the lower frequencies, but no other tone controls are offered.
The sound is not great (that's one of the things you pay for in higher-priced models), but it's reasonably full bodied and pleasing with CD, cassette, or radio. A manual right/left balance adjustment is provided, although this seems unnecessary in a system with two built-in speakers that sit a mere 6 inches apart.
Once a cassette is in the player, it locks shut, and rubber buttons allow you to fast-forward, rewind, pause, and stop or eject. To record from either radio or the CD player, you simultaneously press Play and Record. Once it runs through the end of a tape side, the unit will automatically shut itself off. Turning a tape over is something that has to be done manually.
A 0.125-inch headphone jack is provided, though headphones are not included. You can power the unit with eight C batteries or by plugging it into your wall with the provided AC adapter.
The Wilson/Power WCDBR90R comes with a six-month warranty on parts and labor.
