Amazon.com Review
JVC wasn't kidding when it dubbed the RV-B90 the Urban Assault Kaboom. With its army green-and-black color scheme, tubular shape, rugged build, and heavy-duty shoulder strap (with a pouch for the remote), this boombox looks like it was built for many tours of duty. Instead, JVC has designed the Kaboom for the urban warrior--that is, one who wants to blast his or her way through the neighborhood with bass, not bullets.

The RV-B90's feature set is pretty decent. Its top-loading CD player uses a 1-bit digital-to-analog converter; the cassette deck features auto reverse with one-touch recording; the tuner boasts 30 FM and 15 AM station memories; and the boombox even offers a clock/timer with sleep and wake-up functions, a backlit LCD display, and remote control.

Using the RV-B90 is lots of fun--the CD and cassette wells actually lock shut with small black knobs. JVC's one-touch playback and the full-feature remote all worked intuitively and flawlessly.

The RV-B90 is the most serious boom box we've ever seen or heard at its price point--its sound is amazing, whether you look at it as a portable device or a home shelf system. For instance, most portables don't play very loud because they have wimpy speakers and amplifiers. This is clearly not the case with the RV-B90. Whether you're into alternative rock, hip-hop, or pipe organs, the RV-B90 pumps out an astonishing amount of dynamic bass. Fortunately, the midrange and highs are equally impressive--open, clean, and clear. The only thing we don't like about the RV-B90's sound is JVC's ACS (Active Clear Sound) circuit, which actually muddies the sound as opposed to making it clearer. Fortunately, this circuit is defeatable; we recommend leaving it off.

One caution with this boombox: the telescopic radio antenna is a bit fragile, so be careful not to snap it off when you're blasting down the road.

Assuming you don't mind looking like an urban assault warrior, JVC's RV-B90 Urban Assault Warrior Kaboom is one amazing portable music system. Although not inexpensive, when you add up its excellent features and serious sound, it equals a remarkable value.

5 out of 5 stars Without Equal !.......2006-09-02

As a Professional Carpenter who needs music on the job site. I have owned 2 of these radios, which have been played on the job every day for the past 6 years. They take a ton of abuse and sound awesome.

To be honest, the tape player door broke on both of them, but who playes tapes anymore anyway.
The cd player died on my first one after a few years, and only after it took a fall from a few feet after getting knocked off a bench. That is why I got the second, but that was before Ipods, which can be easily connected in the back with a 1/8 inch aux. cord from radio shack.

If I had my ipod back then I never would have got rid of the first one.

I actually was looking to see if they were still for sale anywhere and was sad to see that they are discontuinued.

Every job that I go to people ask me about this Kaboom box. I wish I could buy a backup in case the currant one becomes a casualty, which unfortunately is a possibility in the environment it is used daily.

5 out of 5 stars The Kaboom RV-B9OLTD( Transparent Blue) From Eagle Iowa.......2003-02-22

My friend bught this model in 1998. I loved it so much that I searched for two years to have one. I found it in Colorado.
I paid 220.00 Dollars for this one. And over all sounds even better than the RVB99 Or the RV90 (assault) Mine is the RV-B90LTD
It packs 52 watts. My friends envey mind for the doubled impact
of sound that theirs have. I love thay way the bass booms and still have the full range as well. It never sounds destorted and
It loves to Eat Batterys! that is my only complaint. I recomend this Loaded Boom Box to every one ! If you can't find the
RV-B90LTD the RV-B99 is almost as good but only has 26 watts per channel. I love this Stereo for cammping and on the Boat And at the cabin. There is one more draw bock With the RV-B90LTD it it weighs 29 pounds without batteries And 32 pounds with. Compared to the RVB99 that weighs 24 pounds. It is discontiued But if you find A RV-B90LTD Get it you will love the heavy sound and clarity it will give you. And the full function remote will never make you get up to change to music ! unless the Batteries go dead in the remote. This one of the best products That JVC has come out with since 1998. Thanks JVC YOUR THE BEST !!!

4 out of 5 stars An Amazing Product Unfortunately Discontinued.......2003-02-20

I have the grey model and I have to say that out of all the boombox style portable stereos I have listened to (and I always check them out), this model KaBoom is by far the best. I mean if you want sound and bass this stereo has it in spades. But don't think that this is all it has. It also sounds great at lower volumes. I listen to everything from hip hop to reggae to Mozart to Machine Head to John Coletrane and it all sounds great. That's why it frustrates me to no end as to why JVC discontinued this model and replaced it with a ... underpowered smaller model that costs more to boot! Sure it was heavy, ate batteries (10-D cells and 4-AA cells) like it was going out of style, and the carrying strap wasn't the most robust (the swivels let go on me and I almost dumped mine on a concrete floor) but so what? I'd put up with all those short commings because of the sound. Please, please, oh please JVC bring back the RV-B model KaBoom!!!

4 out of 5 stars Super Sound.......2000-06-02

Finally I found a boombox that runs off 12V car battery. Now I can play it in my camper with great base and sound. I just wouldn't want to have to carry it to far tho. It is heavy. But the sound makes up for it.

4 out of 5 stars JVC RV-B90 Kaboom.......2000-04-24

Well worth the price! Others have stated that the ACS makes the sound muddy but I've found that I like it. Best sounding boombox I've ever listened to! Love the full function remote. The only drawbacks are that it is heavy (25 lbs.) and that it literally eats batteries if you try to run it on batteries; otherwise, perfect.
