Panasonic RR-US050 Compact IC Digital Voice Recorder

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The Panasonic RR-US050 Compact IC Recorder is designed to give you the ability to record for over eight hours in stereo SP mode without sacrificing the quality of your recording. In the past, LP mode (long play) was necessary to maximize recording time, but with poor sound. With the RR-US050, you no longer have to choose between sound quality and recording time. The included USB cable connects your IC Recorder to a compatible PC for easy file transfers. And thanks to the Digital Voice Activated System, recording begins as soon as sound is detected. This helps eliminate wasted recording space and saves valuable battery resources.

The RR-USO50 allows you to record up to 99 files each in of 5 folders, for a total of 495 files. At SP monaural mode, you can record up to 16 hours continuously. The recorder includes voice recognition and text to speech software (Voice Editing Version 1.0, Professional Edition). A built-in stereo microphone, external microphone jack, and stereo headphones are also included. With these options, and measuring less than five-inches tall and less than an inch deep, the RR-US050 is the perfect voice recorder to take with you anywhere you need to go.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This really is a piece of junk!!!.......2006-03-17

I have to say from the get go that I speak with some degree of insight when I write this review. I have spent a fair amount of time testing recorders and microphones - albiet as a non-professional, and have never been so disappointed with a piece of equipment. Here's why:

1. The audio quality is very sub-par even at the highest quality setting.
2. This player records only in Panasonic's proprietary VM1 format which has to be converted into a wave file using the enclosed software (tedious compared to the drag-and-drop convenience of other PVR's)
3. The tediousness of using Panasonic's software to transfer the recordings to computer is unspeakable.

This is the equipment I use and have tested:

Sony MZR-90 Mindisc Player /Sony ECM-MS907 Microphone (used for 6 years)
Panasonic DS-2 (Tested: Audio quality is reasonable for a PVR. External microphone recording is quite good, though.)
Panasonic DM-10 (Tested: Audio quality seems to be pretty decent for buil-in mics. External microphone recording seems to be affected by a low-tone flutter. I wonder whether this is because the microphone jack doubles as the earphone output.)

Thanks for reading.

I think I'm going to get either the Olympus DM-10 or DM-20.
