Amazon.com Review
Tapeless digital audio recorders have been around for some time, but until recently, the devices were hard to use and only recorded a few minutes worth of audio. Panasonic has changed all that with the introduction of the RR-QR240, a tapeless audio recorder that stores up to 266 minutes of audio and is easier to use than many of the cassette-tape recorders we've worked with.

The first thing we noticed about this device was its sleek, slim design. Measuring a little over 2 inches wide, a little under 4 inches high, and only 0.5-inches thick, it slips neatly into a shirt or pants pocket. The device is powered by a pair of AAA batteries and can record at three different quality levels. The advertised 266 minutes of record time is achieved at the low Long Play level, which is perfectly fine for making voice notes when the microphone will be close to your mouth. For recording conferences, meetings, or other recordings that require a greater level of fidelity, the decent Standard Play mode allows for up to 133 minutes of record time, while the superb High Quality mode lets you store up to 66 minutes of audio. We were impressed with the HQ mode, which let us create crisper recordings than any analog recording device we've worked with.

Recordings are stored in numbered files that can be placed in one of four lettered folders for easy organization. A wheel on the side of the device let us easily navigate the user interface and control the fast-forward and rewind features with one hand. We really appreciated the hold switch that let us lock the device so buttons weren't accidentally pressed when we were carrying the RR-QR240 around. Microphone and headphone jacks rounded out the package, allowing us to easily use it with phone recording equipment and external microphones. The audio playback from the built-in speaker came across loud and clear, which is amazing considering how thin this recorder is. Analog players offer finer control over fast-forwarding and rewinding, but they can't come close to the sound quality, portability, and organization features of this superb digital audio recorder. --T. The Panasonic RR-QR240 is a digital, voice-activated recorder that fits in the palm of your hand. You can record up to 396 files on the 32 MB of flash memory, then divide your files into four folders; give your work notes, personal files, random ideas, and to-do lists separate homes. There is a time and date stamp for increased organization. Selective erasing allows you to individually delete old files.

Variable recording speeds give you up to 240 minutes of recording time. You can also set the Panasonic RR-QR240 to record at certain times. The built-in condenser microphone handles personal and room recording. Three playback speeds let you take copious notes or skip through a long session quickly. The built-in speaker provides dynamic playback.

The Panasonic RR-QR240 runs on two AAA batteries. There is an LED battery-power indicator and a hold switch that prevents battery drain when you are transporting your recorder.

5 out of 5 stars A handy, robust, high-quality product.......2002-05-10

I bought a Panasonic RR-QR240 over a year ago and I
haven't left home without it. First of all, the microphone
generates a clear and crisp signal, yet is sensitive
enough to be able to record people speaking 6 feet away.

Second, the recording time is one of the best one around even
though this product is no longer the newbie on the market.

Third, and some of you may not believe this (I wouldn't if
I it hadn't happen to me): last night, I was cleaning clothes
and ACCIDENTALLY WASHED my RR-QR240. I didn't realize this
until I heard strange knocks in the dryer...
I took it out of the dryer, threw out the batteries, opened up the case,
and proceded to gently dry the electronic components.
After leaving the unit to dry up overnight, I put in fresh
batteries this morning, and while my previous recordings
were lost, my unit STILL WORKED!

I just wish other products in the high-tech market were
this robust!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review for Model QR200.......2002-01-03

I put a lot of value in your reviews so I thought I would share how happy I am with my new digital tape recorder, Panasonic Model QR200. Although mine doesn't have quite the capacity of the QR240, I am very happy with its performance. I can only assume the QR240 is just as nice with more capacity.

First of all, it is very compact and easy to use. Because it is so small, I take it practically everywhere for making quick notes of ideas or information I don't want to forget. The erase feature works very well, so when I have completed my follow up, I erase that item and continue only with the items I still need.

The thumb wheel works very well, allowing you to go forward or backward to review your messages. It truly can be operated with one hand, including the recording process. The hold button on the side is a great feature to prevent the machine from activating while in your pocket. Even if you do accidently activate the machine, it is very simple to erase the unwanted file, restoring your storage space. I especially like being able to go from one message to another without having to spend time rewinding over previous messages. Like a CD, you can jump from one message to another.

The four folders are nice to help you categorize your messages or you can transfer them from one folder to another according to priority. I am extremely satisfied with this product. It does what I want it to, is small, quiet, easy to use and I would highly recommend it to others!

1 out of 5 stars Keeps on breaking.......2001-12-12

I have a Panasonic RR-QR240 and a RR-QR80. The QR240 was purchased in Oct 2000 and the QR80 was purchased in August 2001. The QR240's speaker went out. I had to put a headset on it to hear messages. I purchased the QR80 to fill in while the QR240 was being repaired. It was promptly returned to me by a service center out of Georgia. Their repair lasted about three days. So I put it in the drawer and continued to use the QR-80. Today the microphone when out on it. So now I have two of them that broke. In just over a year I have spent about $200 on units that do not work. Try a Sony.

5 out of 5 stars James Bond Never Had This.......2001-05-23

Now here's a product that anyone can use. Smaller than a pack of cigarettes and half an inch thin. It records crystal clear sound using intergrated circuits. It has a voice activated feature so the 66 minutes of HQ sound are not wasted. If you need standard sound quality you get 266 minutes (almost 5 hours) of recording. The unit has an extremely sensitive microphone so you can leave it anywhere and pick up what's being said and you don't even have to be there. Very undercover if you know what I mean. It has a clock and various folders so you can store your recordings by category and priority. One folder might be where you keep something for a long time. Another folder might be where you keep messages that will soon be erased. You can divide messages and store what you want. The machine automatically starts a new message without ever 'writing' over an old one. You can create up to 396 new messages and then scroll thru all of them numerically or simply by listening. Simply amazing. Be careful, it's high-tech enough where you can get into trouble by listening and recording things you shouldn't be. By the way, it's totally quiet.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Bird Recordings.......2001-03-18

Just put it on the ground where there is a mysterious bird song, or next to the bird feeder, and let it record in Hi Quality mode for a hour. Or carry it on walks and bike rides to catch that bird song that's been bugging you for years, and carry it home to compare with Peterson or Stokes CDs.

There's no bass response to speak of (good for birds) and the highs are excellent and there's absolutely no mechanical noise of course.

Save short segments you want to remember in another folder, and do it all again.

Attaching a length of day-glo tape to the hand-strap hole will not only help you find it in the field, but also helps find it in the house, where it instantly disappears in the clutter otherwise.

I bought it to record 4 hours of Imus each day, but the low quality mode isn't quite up to it. The other two modes are okay.

It uses 3.5mm mono jacks for input and output, to record off the air or play back through your computer or stereo.
