Olympus DW-90 Digital Voice Recorder (Champagne Gold)

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
Olympus provides low-cost digital storage for voice recording in the DW-90. Built-in 8 MB flash memory provides ample space for short lectures and interviews, and three different recording choices--High Quality, Standard Play, and Long play--let you decide whether quality or quantity is most important for a given application.

The DW-90's battery life covers 19 hours of recording (11 for playback) on two AAA batteries. It's just over 3 inches long and 1.8 inches wide, so you can take it almost anywhere. The LCD provides important details such as remaining recording time, the date, and the time, as well as visual confirmation of voice activation mode, recording mode (HQ/SP/LP), and battery status.

The DW-90 also provides three folders to manage your files, each capable of storing up to 100 messages. A built-in unidirectional/telescoping microphone helps reduce background noise for clearer recordings, and a Microphone Sensitivity Selector lets you adjust the voice activation threshold for hands-free recording.

The DW-90 comes with a microphone stand, USB cable for quick copying of your files to your hard drive, hand strap for convenient carrying, earphones so you can listen to your recordings on the road, and Olympus's Digital Wave Player software.

Product Description:
If you're looking for a dictation device that marries extraordinary design with technical functionality, then take a closer look at the DW-90. Its directional microphone defines the appearance of this compact, lightweight model. However, this is not a design gimmick. When pointed at the speaker, it assures good recording quality over a distance of up to 6 meters, making the DW-90 ideal for lectures and large meetings. Besides three quality modes, three folders and an LCD, this model supports USB connection to the PC.

4 out of 5 stars Wish I could find a hard case for this.......2006-08-25

I like this voice recorder. I just wanted something for my purse, so I could take a voice memo for myself, or record nature sounds like birds. It's a nice little recorder for that. But it keeps getting turned on by things in my purse, which runs the batteries down. I wish I could find a hard shell case for it, to prevent that from happening.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good sound, missing some features.......2005-02-16

I was actually pleasantly surprised at the sound quality this unit gives, considering that there is no way to attach an external microphone. If you look on the Olympus website, you'll see that the DW90 has a sampling frequency of 22 kHz in HQ mode. That's better than the norm of 8 to 16 kHz that many others use (although not as good as something like the DM10 or new DS-2, which record at CD quality 44.1 kHz). The frequency response is only 300 to 5,800Hz, so I wouldn't try recording a symphony, but that's comparable to many of these voice recorders (again that DS-2 actually covers 100 to 17,000Hz. Impressive). If you're willing to download to PC frequently and don't need to capture more than 20 minutes at a time, it's a pretty good little device.

It's also impressive that even after my wife dropped the recorder in the bath, it still works. Now the batteries don't last long, and I can't rewind, but everything else works great.

2 out of 5 stars Very Small Capacity.......2004-04-26

I purchased this thinking that I was getting a recorder that would actually hold 90 minutes of audio. Unfortunately that capacity is only available for "LP" mode which is highly distorted. HQ and SP modes record very well, but only plan on getting 20-30 minutes of use out of it before the memory is full.

The PC connection was not automatic, despite the instruction manual comments that no additional software was required. On the whole, I found no little to no support material available on the Olympus website.

I returned the recorder and am still looking for something <$100 that provides 2-3 hours of high quality recording with a PC connection.

5 out of 5 stars Proved with time.......2004-01-21

I've been using this recorder for about 5 months now, and I love it now just as much as I did when I first purchased it. One thing that I like very much about the design is that the Erase button is extremely hard to accidentally push (and that, twice) - which shows someone was thinking when they designed it. The software installed perfectly, and works perfectly. I am very satisfied with this little recorder; it does not weigh much, but it gets the job done - and very well at that.

5 out of 5 stars Compact yet full of features.......2003-09-09

I just got this little guy (so small it fits in the palm of my hand), and I am thoroughly satisfied with it. It is small, yet it has a lot of features, and it seems to be well manufactured - doesn't seem like it will break real soon or anything. I have recorded four files so far, and have even transfered them to my laptop (running Win 98 SE). The installation of the software was seamless, and all works great. I have not had a chance to try out some features of the recorder (lecture mode for instance), but I am very satisfied with what I got so far.
