File organization is straightforward and intuitive. The WS-100 boasts five separate folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of three recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for capturing people with low speaking voices (it offers 4 hours and 20 minutes of recording time); SP mode, which still sounds good but isn't quite as crisp (ensures 8 hours and 40 minutes of time); and LP mode, which is designed to maximize recording (27 hours and 20 minutes). And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-100 will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.

Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To transfer information to or from the WS-100 from a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, it's easy to download images, documents, and other files.

Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include adjustable microphone sensitivity, which lets you adjust the recording level to meet your needs; an easy-to-read LCD display; the ability to erase single or entire files; and a pair of stereo earphones.

Great little recorder!.......2007-06-18

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, one of my girlfriends who had been down this road told me to get a recorder to tape all my doctor visits. You know how it is - you can never remember exactly what was said, even if you try to take notes. My doctor was so impressed, she told me she would recommend a recorder to all her patients.

Anyway, this device is so easy to use! It plugs straight into the PC and I can save all my files to Media Player. the 27 hour capability is a plus. And get this - the battery is included!

I searched around for a digital voice recorder that was compatible with Macs and only found this one. So far it has been great and has served it's purpose. I would highly recommend this recorder if you're a Mac user since it's easy to use and the quality of sound is excellent!

This digital voice recorder is so easy to use. You can record and then download to your PC through windows media player. There is no extra software needed!!!! The recorder works just like a USB drive, so its supper easy--and connects to any computer.

Battery power is also good.

The only negative is the recorder's small size. It is soooo small, you've got to be careful with it. It should come with a small protective cover so that it won't scratch or break in your pocket.

This is a great product. I've used it for 9 interviews so far, and it works great even in busy, loud locations.

I work as a journalist and I love this little handheld recording stick. I've managed to integrate it with the voice recognition software that comes with the package so this has saved me hours of time what with dictating my articles into the stick and then letting the computer transcribe it for me.

I've also managed to get over a month's worth of usage from the batteries, though I remain perplexed as to why as the recorder fills up, the battery level drops only to increase when the recordings are dumped off the stick to the computer.

Make sure you hold it steady as otherwise you'll hear the sound of your hand brushing up against the metal. I've found an external microphone (I bought one for $50 at an electronics store and it works GREAT) takes care of that problem and also produced much better sound quality even from a distance than using the recorder's built-in mic.

The toggle button can be a little confusing at first and sometimes the little buttons on the machine are hard to press, but I solve this by using the tip of a writing instrument.

I paid $250 for a voice recorder and couldn't find the CD when I replaced my laptop. You'd think Sony would offer a download or replacement through support- but NO. You have to BUY the software all over again. The $250 recorder is now useless because of their proprietary format, but I'll be darned if they are getting another penny of my money, and they shouldn't get a penny of yours.

Excellent recorder - even for music.......2006-06-19

I bought this to record rock shows, after having been impressed with the quality of some bootlegs I'd heard recorded on it earlier in the year. I've recorded four shows so far and considering that this recorder isn't designed for that sort of dynamic range or level, the quality is truly outstanding. Minimal to no distortion, very clean sound. I've heard bootlegs recorded on far more expensive equipment come out far worse. The sound quality is a bit flat, and the bass doesn't carry much punch, but it's a good quality and the size makes it SO easy to get into a venue. For the price it just couldn't be beat for my purposes.

I use this recorder exclusively for class lectures and could not be happier. Most important feature I was looking for was clarity in a large room. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The recorder does not have to be anywhere near the professor to pick up their voice perfectly! I bought one of the cheaper sony recorders first, it was about $50, and returned it because the sound quality was terrible. For me this one is worth the money because I am recording from a distance. It's also very compact and easy to use. Definitely recommend it for students!

Everything you need in a small package.......2007-05-14

I did a fair amount of research on these kinds of recorders. There certainly were other recorders that cost more, however, none that claimed to do as much for what this Panasonic can be purchased for. I have had it for a month and it is great. No problems organizing. The battery life is great, and the audio quality is good. The voice to document software is ease to use and is as good as anything out there. Is it perfect? well no, but I have not run across ANY that are. It is more than adequate. Well worth the price. I give it a high reccomendation. Jorge

READ BEFORE BUYING!!! THIS IS NOT THE RR-US500.......2007-05-10

Be very careful before buying this product, you will not receive the RR-US500 but instead the older model, the RR-US395. I made the mistake of buying what was shown in the picture, but this is VERY DECEIVING. The first picture is the RR-US500 and the second picture is the RR-US395. YOU WILL RECEIVE THE RR-US395 so stay away. And if your lucky enough to buy from discount jungle *grin* you will have to pay a ridiculous 15% restocking fee!!!

BE CAREFUL.......2007-04-16

I did a search for the model RR-US500, but instead of saying the product of not available I was moved to this webpage (product number RR-US395). I ended up buying a cheaper product thinking it was a more expensive one. Be careful when reading the DESCRIPTION of this product and be sure you are getting what you came here for.

To be fair, this is the first time this happens with me in Amazon. I am not sure why they did not include the model number in the title. It is very unusual, and I got duped because I really believe Amazon that much!

Great Recorder - Probably Best on Market in Price Range!.......2007-03-28

I've done a good amount of research on these things and I actually owned one for 4-5 months before my car was broken into and the unit was stolen. I'm now looking for another one and it seems that these units are in such demand that the price has shot up to over $100 (purch. mine for $54) - In any event, I only gave it 4 stars because I never tested all the features. I only needed it to record real estate properties/leads I drove past in my daily activities. The playback quality was excellent and 2 AA batteries lasted foreever. The 4 folders (plus one default/system/main folder) came in really handed with me using 1 for various notes, another for my to-do list, another for my properties, and another for notes on specific properties I own and needed to renovate.

Excellent device and I'm looking desperately to fina another one. I read the reviews on Olympus which were too negative and spotty (some good some bad). So I feel comfortable sticking with my Panasonic US395 (it's the Cancerian in me).

Don't buy This.......2007-03-19

Don't believe any good ratings about this product. It comes incomplete. If you want to use the voice recognition software, you must go out and buy a microphone, which costs half as much as the unit. If you want to use it for dictations, the computer will not identify the unit as a DLA or disc drive. You must use the enclosed software to convert the files to .WAV by using a very cumbersome program. Anyone who says this is a good buy is probably a retailer trying to sell this device. DO NOT BUY THIS.

For a remanufactured product, I was amazed to get such an excellent product. It worked as a brand new recorder and it did not have any scratches at all. For the same price I could have got a recorder without USB port and less memory in a regular store. I am glad I found it in Amazon.

Gets the job done.......2007-05-23

Kind of cheaply constructed - the controls are a bit weird - and everytime I pick it up I wonder, "Is it broke yet?" I've been able to record conversations accurately and painlessly. The software is "crappy" - but it does the job if you struggle to learn it. My task was to record the conversation, download their format, convert it to mp3/wav for distribution. I used their software to get to the wav, and Audacity to get to the mp3. Their software is pretty good at removing noise to clean up the recording. I've had it about 3 months now, and I still haven't broken it. I keep it in my back pack wrapped in a bandera. (Makes a better case than the sock I was using - and people don't react to the bandera as strongly as they did to the dirty sock.)

In the past, LP (Long Play) mode was necessary to maximize recording time, but this often meant sacrificing sound quality.
