Customer Reviews:
I love this player.......2006-04-01
What I Bought:
I love this RCA RP2621 Personal MP3 CD Player. I don't remember the unit coming with earbuds. I hate ear buds. My unit either came with or I purchased at the same time Phillips HS500 behind the ear headphones. The headphones were at first no big deal but after they were used for a while give great sound. My guess is that the mediocre reviews for sound are because of the earbuds. The volume goes up to permanent ear injury and will drive any 32ohm rated headphone. For music as the volume goes up I turn the bass down to balance the highs. Very respectable sound quality with some decent HiFi qualities. I also have a Mac with a CD burner and the various programs for collecting audio files from the internet.
Better Than iPod?:
I used to have an Archos Jukebox an "Australian iPod" and it had fantastic sound and menus to adust and equalize sound and super fantastic headphones but it was expensive and built around a hard disk. It died! Hard disks crash, suck battery power, fill up with stuff you don't want to erase. This unit doesn't have any of those problems. Once you've burned a disk for your player you have a permanent archive so storage is unlimited.
What Does It Play?:
In the office where I do data entry the computers put out a lot of RF interference so listening to the radio is a challenge. My job is so boring that I like to listen to lectures and radio programs. MP3 and WMA are very popular formats for producers of informative recordings. Radio4All, INDYmedia, iTunes podcasts, and my CD collection that is ripped to MP3s all play beautifully. CDs play the clearest.
It doesn't play the new MP4's so some of the stuff you burn from your iTunes download folder are not going to play. The player just ignores files it can't read. It doesn't crash. You can record these realtime using AudioHiJack which records any sound source or program your Mac can run saving them to MP3. AudioHiJack opens up worlds of audio because so many producers stream. For example the BBC. I should also point out that some players and recorders are controlled by copyright protected software. RCA RP2621 is just a player if you can burn it you can play it doesn't have an operating system to out smart you.
As far as Media types I can't say. I just use the cheap CD-R's and haven't tried any other kinds in the unit except the black disks which do work.
Rewind is Better:
When my Jukebox crashed bought a Panasonic MP3 player. It was a battery hog. And if you paused a program it might run out of batteries an hour and a half into a two hour lecture. This RCA RP2621 will go to sleep on you if you leave it for more than about 10 minutes. It doesn't have a memory mode to remember where it was. However it does rewind into the end of a program from the previous program. That has been very useful and not all players rewind like that. My Panasonic jumped from file to file once it had rewound to the beginning of a program. The dream device with have a scoller and a pointer that allows you to pick the exact time mark. This unit only costs only 35 bucks it is not the heart ache my Archos was when it didn't perform the exact way I wanted it to.
Durable:
I have never dropped this unit full tilt. Caught it with my foot most every time. I did have trouble for a couple of days when the top wouldn't close properly and if I hit pause the darn thing would shut off. I used an elastic band to close it. Strange it must of just been a grain of something in the latch because I stopped using that elastic and it hasn't done it for a long while. I use this 8 to 9 hours a day five days a week. I bought it last March 2005 and played it continually until October and again since February 1st of this year. It is April 1st today and it still is going strong (no fool'n). I change the batteries about every two and a half days using energizer rechargable 2300Amh camera batteries but alkalines last just about as long. My Sony Discman played the greater part of a week but could only play wave files (CDs).
This has been the best electronics purchase I have ever made because of the amount of enjoyment it has given me. If it breaks or fails I have lost nothing. I have all the disks.
You get so much bang for the buck with this unit. It is versatile and reliable and gives you so much that more expensive players give that spending more just seems like a waste. There are other options if you have the cash. iPod but ought to record stereo for that price. RCA Lyra product must be worth looking into because of how well this unit has performed and is still performing. Don't buy Archos. Sony MiniDisks record stereo but are at war with their customers over copyright and they hate Mac. Buy this in the mean time. You will not regret it.
Mediocre sound quality, yet otherwise okay player.......2005-11-29
I switched over to using this CD player because of it's great features, however you should consider a few things before buying one.
The upper end of the sound spectrum seems to be very low on this CD player. I remember playing a few songs a thinking maybe the song was just like that, then I played the same one in my other CD player (a Panasonic SL-SX430) and realised the problem. I understand you can't expect perfect sound from a portable player, but this was too much for me. The sound EQ features didn't help either as they only add more bass.
Pros:
Cheap price
ID3 tag support for mp3 files
Compact size
Finally an RCA CD player with good skip-protection
Cons:
Sound reproduction poor
Odd button placement (mainly for the volume controls!)
Just stopping this CD player will reset the unit, causing you to loose your place on the CD. :(
Slightly heavier than other portable CD players I've used
Overall I'm not impressed by the performance of this CD player. The only reason this gets 3 stars and not 2 is because its price is so low.
good mp3 player, good battery life, EVEN SUPPORT UDF format CD.......2005-11-15
when I use this cd player to test the cd formatted using nero Incd to make it work like a flash memory I didn't expect it to work since this player is so cheap, but to my surprise it worked just like normal cd. That means I can use it to play cds that can write and erase like the flash memory. I highly recommend it to those who wants to use it to play cd in UDF format.
Entering programs.......2005-11-09
Heads up: the user manual (at least the online downloadable version) lies. To enter a program with an mp3 cd, don't use
< and > to select a folder, the unit won't respond. Use
<
< and >> to select a folder, press p to confirm the folder, use
<
< and >> again to select a track, press p to confirm, then the unit will advance to the next empty slot.
Work fine WITHOUT remote.......2005-10-24
The CD Player work fine, have a great sound. The Anti Skip works good. But It NOT have a remote. The package only have a manual, a earphones and the player.
It's a great item and a good price but it comes incomplete.
