Amazon.com Product Description
Going on a road trip? Tired of changing CDs after a dozen songs or so? Genica's GN803 Tavarua portable MP3-CD player lets you convert your CD audio files to MP3 format and store up to 170 MP3-formatted songs on a single CD.

The Tavarua plays MP3 files and CD audio files from CD and CD-R media. It does not read CD-RW discs, as its design requires sampling at 44.1 KHz, the standard rate for CDs.

The GN803 supports ISO 9660 file formatted directories and also accommodates long file names. Bit rates between 32 and 196 Kbps are also supported, but variable bit rates are not. Be aware that this player lacks a built-in flash memory, meaning you need to transfer your MP3 files to CDs before playing them.

Playback modes are limited. They include random/shuffle and repeat play, while the LCD displays only track number and elapsed time. The 50-second antiskip buffer is great for portable use, virtually eliminating irritating skips.

The GN803's dynamic bass boost pumps up the bass and balances tone, offering a fairly full audio experience. It also comes with a rapid track advance that speeds through the directory to access the track you want.

Headphone, microphone, and AC adapter inputs are included. The GN803 comes with an AC adapter and can run on two AA alkaline or ni-cad batteries (not supplied). A set of earphones is also supplied.

Genica backs the GN803 Tavarua with a one-year parts and labor warranty.

1 out of 5 stars First MP3 CD player could have been MUCH better.......2003-01-31

I commend this player for being the first, but everything else about it isn't very good. It skips a lot, if you want to find a song at the end of the CD (alphabetical?), you have to skip through all the tracks one... at... a... time. Can't skip folders ect. Mine still works amazingly, but only because I just use it at home and never move it or even use it much. I've left non-rechargable batteries in the box while it's plugged in... BIG mistake! the stupid thing tried to recharge them and leaked battery acid (i think) all over the place. Get a different player, there's much better ones now.

1 out of 5 stars it's terrible.......2002-07-16

I own one, and it has been the worst investment I have done in all my life. It takes too long to read the music files, after some use it heats up and will not work. Some cds are readable and others aren't. The cover painting is not very reliable. As a conclusion, it is a very low quality product.

1 out of 5 stars Piece "o" ..........2002-05-22

I bought this ... and it never played a song without skipping. after about 3 days it simply stopped working. I would recommend the Philips player.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent! First of it's kind.......2001-12-23

you have to respect this player. If you have any brain you would know that this technology is amazing and is the future of music. If you don't know much about mp3 and this kind of technology, stay away, but if you do, then check this baby out. It takes a little while to get the hang of it but its worth it.

1 out of 5 stars best to go elsewhere.......2001-08-20

I join the ranks of those unhappy with thi splayer. Got it for xmas, so the price wasn't bad. But there is no portability here. I'm amazed the other reviewer was gettin 3 hours on a battery. My player is lucky to get 1 hours on batteries; and the random funciton on batteries is a show stopper. Skip protection is also none existant. No display either - you only get to see the track numbers - no names or text at all. Folder navagation is also close to impossible.

This looks like a bargain -But stay away from this one far away.
