Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're after portability or simply a stereo system with a small footprint, Panasonic's RX-D29 CD/radio/cassette boombox is a worthy candidate. The system pumps 6 watts per channel through a pair of 2-way speakers, ,each of which uses a 3-inch woofer and a .5-inch tweeter. Enjoy your favorite tunes without interruption--you can play a CD at random, in a specified order, or repeat one song or the whole disc.

You can play your homemade MP3 music compilations, too. This unit is compatible with multi-session MP3 discs, but if there are a lot of sessions it will take more time for playback to commence. Albums and tracks will play in alphanumeric order, so number your files and folders to ensure a desired playback sequence. The boombox does not support MP3 song and album title display. If a CD-ROM-format CD contains MP3 and files other than MP3, only the MP3 files will be playable.

CD synchro start helps you record custom music mixes on cassette, and auto-scan tuning sets your presets for you (12 FM, 12 AM) when you power up for the first time. The unit even comes with a handy remote control to simplify operation from the comfort of your favorite listening position (remote requires 2 AA batteries, not included).

Full auto stop conserves batteries and cassette wear by shutting down when a tape reaches its end (or beginning, if you've just rewound), while CD cue and review controls help you zero in on just the section you're looking for.

Choose from 4 preset equalizer settings to tailor the sound to your preference (XBS bass boost, vocal, clear, or soft). A Sound Virtualizer circuit simulates surround sound from the boombox's 2 speakers. For MP3 listening, Panasonic's special Re-Master circuit reproduces the treble lost during MP3 compression, enabling reproduction close to the original.

The RX-D29 runs on either AC power (cord included) or 6 C-cell batteries (not included). Power backup using 3 AA batteries (not included) saves the current time, timer settings, and radio stations that you have set. If memory batteries are not used, memory items are erased if the unit loses power.

What's in the Box
Boombox, remote control, AC power cord, and a user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars A happy customer.......2007-06-18

Bought this after reading the reviews and Amzno delivered it real fast. Happy with the sound quality, basic operations, and light weight. A real rich set of features makes this a Good Buy.

5 out of 5 stars Attractive, versatile boombox with good sound.......2007-06-13

I was looking for a basic boombox and after one disastrous model from a no-name maker, I decided to get this Panasonic. I've been quite happy from Day One.

First of all, this boombox has pretty good sound for a small audio machine. It also has four preset equalizer settings that's simple to use and does make a difference to sound output. The remote control also has a "sound virtualizer" button that allows you to generate 3D effects for the sound output.

One thing that makes me happy is the CD player on this boombox can play MP3 files (but you can't shuffle MP3 files as you can shuffle CD tracks). And like all Panasonic CD players, it's very reliable and doesn't even skip when you walk and play. The CD player also spins very fast and is quiet, which is good compared to cheap boomboxes.

The cassette player, which I use occasionally, is great, too. One thing to note is it only accepts normal-type audio tapes, not one of those metal or oxide tapes. On the other hand, you can record to tape CD music or broadcast - the old-fashioned way which sure brings back lots of fond memories of the Walkman days.

The buttons are clearly laid out and easy to operate. Programming CD tracks in the orders you like is very easy. The radio tuning function works well, too. A built-in, extendable antenna makes it easy to find good FM broadcast. A built-in, foldable handle makes this lightweight boombox easy to carry.

The LCD is smallish but it comes on backlit when the boombox is powered-on. There's a built-in clock; you can press the Display button on the remote to activate the clock display anytime. When powered off, the clock shows but is not backlit.

Overall, this boombox feels solid and works well. It costs more than many other boomboxes but it does give you much more confidence. I hope to be using it for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars It sounds GREAT!.......2007-06-09

I would have given it five stars but for one reason. The most annoying. The plug in the back falls out if you just turn the Boombox left or right. I don't know if this is just a bad wire or what! The wire is in now but if I move the boombox slightly, out it goes. The sound is just wonderful. Seller, I would appreciate a new wire! Come on Panasonic!

5 out of 5 stars excellent sound and features.......2007-05-20

This is one of the few boomboxes left in the market with which you can enjoy classical music. It produces a sound that has richness, but also clarity, particularly when you compare it with the muddy sound that comes from almost every other boombox.

It has equalizer modes that make it perfectly fine to listen to rock, rap, or anything else too, and the features and controls are very convenient. The design is clean and nice, but will not appeal those who like their boomboxes flashy, 3 feet long, and with fins :-)

3 out of 5 stars No shuffle for MP3 CDs???.......2007-05-04

This player works, and has decent sound quality... but it has issues.

It doesn't support shuffle for MP3 CDs, and many features (such as regular CD shuffle) are inaccessible without the remote control.

I understand why it might be a little difficult to support shuffle for MP3 CDs, but that doesn't make the feature any less important to me.

5 out of 5 stars I love my Ipod!.......2007-06-26

I love my Ipod! I can now take everything I might want to occupy myself in the case I have some lag time between appointments, or easily show off my latest photos of my kids. Fits just right inside my purse, and the calendar function comes in handy, especially for birthdays, and other things that occur regularly throughout the year. Between my cell phone and this baby, I really do have everything I need right at my fingertips.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Toy..........2007-06-09

I am loving this iPod...since getting it, i have over 1300 songs and not once an i having a problem with it. I told all my friends where i got it. Hopefully, they took my advice in buying it here.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to load Video.......2007-06-08

You have to convert to mp4, take long time. Go Nano.

5 out of 5 stars gift for our son.......2007-05-19

After over a year my son still regards this as the best gift he has ever received. He still finds new ways to use and enjoy it, and it has become a platform for still other gifts. It's truly "the gift that keeps on giving"!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2007-05-13

iPods are very cool, they have many more features than just playing music. This one is the best choice in my opinion 30 gb can hold TONS of songs, unless you are a music adict with this baby you will be set for a while. Ipods nano look good, but they don't have much space and they don't play videos. This one is 30gb, plays video and it's worth the same price than a 8gb nano.

However something weird happened to me, I ordered a white 30gb ipod from amazon. And my surprise when I opened the box, the ipod was RED. Yes, red. In the back it said that it was colorware edition, I went into the webpage of colorware and they paint ipods and notebooks, for $100. So I feel unique with my red Ipod haha.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome unit.......2007-06-15

I've had this unit for almost 2 years now, got it from my wife for my b-day. I installed it in my beater I drive to work (2hrs a day). For 2 years now I enjoy this unit everyday and have no problems with it. The blue is cool, I don't mind it at all. I listen to a lot of dance/trance mp3s and they sound really great on this unit (even with factory speakers). The only funny thing about this unit is that if you have an mp3 on a cd, and the mp3 is longer than 100 minutes (it happens when you listen to dj mixes), starting with 100th minute, the unit displays the first two digits in hex :-)))) so instead of 101:23 (minutes:seconds), you will see A1:23. Not sure if someone pointed it out to dual yet, but who cares. Not too many people have mp3s longer than 100 minutes ;-) Great deal, buy it, you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good Sound at an Affordable Price.......2007-06-08

Bought this stereo as a gift for my wife so she could listen to CD's in her car. The external plug-in for an MP3 player was an added benefit that I use and enjoy when I drive her car! The stereo installed flawlessly into the factory opening of her Toyota Corolla with no additional parts to purchase or fabricate! I had the old stereo out and the new stereo in in about an hour. Great features and a clear display makes this stereo a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-05-12

I am thrilled with this product. It has a good amount of power, so the sound is wonderful. I like the shuffle feature and the memory. Of course, it made my husband happy to receive it.

3 out of 5 stars Don run into a hole!.......2007-05-10

Hey this radio works fine, sounds is good, installation was easy.
I don think is user friendly, beacuse it is a little hard to use, espeacially the serach function.
I do not like also that it always display the track number by default, and sometimes its hard to find that song you just want to hear.
It also jumps too much when you run into a hole (the biggest the hole is.. the biggest the jump is.. some times between albums)

So it is a good product.. its not perfect.. but it is cheap.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality for the price. Not very pretty. Bad mp3 tag display........2007-05-07

This inexpensive receiver has a very good quality. I didn't like the visual (but it's better then the pictures). What I really disliked was the bad mp3 tag display options.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars So-so product... be SURE you like XM Radio before you buy.......2007-06-13

I stopped using this product after a few weeks because of its limitations, which when added up make it a poor entertainment buy in my opinion. No secret is made of the fact that this device only picks up the XM signal when it is tethered to its antenna and cradle... you can't get the signal on the go. This actually isn't as bad as it might seem. You can easily set up the device to record many hours of your favorite XM channel overnight for example and listen to it on the go later. You can delete songs you don't like and you will eventually end up with quite a bit of music you do like.

It records XM music at a fairly low bitrate (128 kbps), which does not give you a high quality recording. It could be that XM's signal doesn't broadcast at a higher bitrate, which would mean this limitation isn't the product's shortcoming, but rather XM's.

The user interface (a 'special' version of Napster) can be extremely frustrating in terms of getting it to recognize the Nexus device until you realize you have to start the software and plug in the device in a particular order, which the user manual doesn't tell you - neither did customer support at either Samsung or Napster. In fact, I was told things about the device and the software that were so clearly wrong as to be sadly comical. For instance: Napster told me the software can only manage music purchased from Napster, which is clearly wrong. The Nexus manual tells you in writing that "you can only transfer songs [between the Nexus and your PC] that you have purchased from XM+Napster or songs that you have ripped from your audio CDs." This too is clearly wrong.

All the above in my opinion isn't even the worst of it. This product, tied to XM Radio service, can obviously be no better than XM Radio itself. I wanted very much to like XM but could not get over the fact that even though you are paying $12.95 a month, they still talk over the music, and they play plenty of ads and irritating XM 'jingles'. I have cancelled service due to these issues. I don't see the point for all the XM-originated chatter and channel ID jingles when you can simply look at your device to see what channel you're listening to (and paying for) if you can't tell from the music selections. I tried out XM a few years back for a few months (cancelled for other reasons) and the talk-over and extraneous jingle issues seem much worse now than they once were. I have found internet-based sources of free music that is free of ads and chatter, and which can be recorded on your hard drive with various available software... and at higher bitrates that are of noticeably higher quality.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying auto dropout cuts off every XM tune!.......2007-06-13

I have the Nexus 25 but assume the same problem exists in the 50. When listening to a recorded XM channel, the player automatically drops out (cuts off) the last couple of seconds of each song and the first second or so of the next song. This means you lose the last few notes of every tune and the first few of the next one. This is extremely jarring if you are used to the normal radio listening experience, since like most radio stations, XM's songs are played in a continuous mix without break, meaning normally the next song starts as the previous song fades away without interruption. Even more noticeable is when this happens during spoken moments such as station IDs or jingles. Instead of hearing "The History of Alternative Music, Fred on 44", you instead only get "istory of Alternative Music, Fred on Fo" or instead of "American Top 40 with Casey Kasem", you hear only "rican Top 40 with Casey K". It is just ridiculous and there seems to be no way around it.

1 out of 5 stars Great service if you never plan on canceling.......2007-04-25

I have been a subscriber for 4 years. Back in November my account was turned off due to a billing issue. The week prior to it being turned off I started receiving 3 calls a day for payment. I advised one of the reps to wait a week for the payment, payment was made. Calls stopped for another week. The radio was then turned off and the 3 calls a day started up again. I explained to the bill collectors I owed nothing and when offered to reactivate the radio I told them not to bother, at this point I wanted nothing more to do with XM. They offered me 3 months of free service to come back, anyone who cancels can get this by the way, and I refused. The 3 calls a day continued for the next week, I was informed that it simply takes a week for your name to fall out of their automated system....

2 more months go by and then I start receiving a bill saying that I reactivated my radio and owe for 2 months of service and all the late fees that go with that. 40 dollars. I call in and state I never reactivated my radio, thus I don't owe for reactivating my radio and the 2 months of service that would have followed. The customer service rep told me that it would be taken cared of, 2 weeks later I get another bill. I call back and the rep tells me the same thing and apologizes for my inconveniences. I even called back the next day just to make sure it was finally resolved, and that rep confirmed that I no longer owed anything. So then last month I start receiving COLLECTIONS NOTICES. YOU HAVE ONE MONTH TO PAY THIS BEFORE IT GOES TO COLLECTIONS. I called in and was promised they would look into it and call me back. This apparently has taken care of the issue, though I never received the call back. This week I called 6 times, 3 of which I was promptly hung up on for no reason, and was told each time that it had been resolved. So hopefully this time it really is... To anyone considering XM I suggest you just get an MP3 player.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Stereo!.......2007-06-09

The Sony Micro Component System is perfect for any bedroom. It's small, it sounds great, and it's sold for a reasonable price. My only complaint is that it didn't come with the cable that connects the mp3 player to the stereo. I still highly recommend this stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound for Classical Music.......2007-06-03

The little stereo has clear sound for acoustically recorded music. It is great for chamber music and opera. The stereo takes very little space and is quite easy to hook up and operate. It is perfect for the night table, and can even be programmed like an alarm clock, to wake one up with music at a certain time.

Amazon.com Product Description

Get ready for total music freedom with the Samsung Nexus digital audio device. The Nexus takes the concept of a personal digital audio player to the next level with the addition of XM satellite radio. Using the supplied dock, and an included XM Connect-and-Play antenna, you can record your favorite XM programming to the device.

The Nexus is the perfect way to carry all your favorite XM content and personal digital music files. View larger.

With the XM + Napster service, you can own the tunes you hear on XM that strike your fancy.

XM radio offers an incredible selection of music, sports, talk, and more.
Then, listen to your tunes and talk radio while you're on the go. In addition to handling XM content, you can also play songs from your existing library of MP3 and WMA music files (including purchased downloads). Plus, you can mix your recorded XM content with your music files -- create a playlist with XM recordings and your own digital music.

Because the Nexus is an XM ready device, it's designed to interface with the XM Connect-and-Play antenna. Simply plug the home antenna into the Nexus and you're rocking to XM's 150-plus digital channels. No additional accessories or installation are required. In addition to charging the device's battery, the included home docking station lets you use the Nexus as an XM receiver to play live XM content through your home stereo (the dock features stereo RCA outputs).

Featuring a full array of programming -- from talk shows, comedy programs, and live Major League Baseball broadcasts to just about every musical genre from bluegrass to jazz -- XM Radio is the fastest growing satellite radio network in the world. All XM metadata is displayed on the Nexus' front panel display, including full song title and artist name, as well as information extras such as stock and sports score tickers.

At 3.4 x 1.9 x 0.7-inches, the Nexus is pocket friendly and designed to go wherever you go. The embedded 512 MB of internal memory gives you ample space for storing your music -- up to 25 hours of content will fit on the device. Music is transferred between your PC and the Nexus via a high-speed USB 2.0 connection.

Another cool aspect of the Nexus is its support for the XM + Napster music service. If you hear a song you like on XM radio, simply "tag" it and easily purchase and download that artist or song via Napster. It's a great way to discover and own the music you like.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying automatic cutoff pause between every XM song in playback!.......2007-06-13

The player has what to me is a fatal flaw: when playing back recorded XM content, the player creates an automatic couple of seconds of silence between every song. This break is even more annoying because it seems to not be an inserted space (a couple of seconds of dead air if you will) added between tracks, but rather is done ON TOP of the recording. In other words, the last few notes of every single song and the first few notes of the next song get cut off always. This is more jarring than you would imagine, especially since like most radio stations, XM's songs play back-to-back (ie: the next song is played on the station as the previous song fades away). This is the normal continuous music mix we expect from normal radio listening but the player adds a very noticeable break that cuts off the songs on both ends. This is actually even worse a problem during spoken moments like the station IDs or announcements. In other words, instead of hearing "This is Fred on 44", the player will instead play "is is Fred on fo" cutting off the message. Another example is instead of playing the well-known jingle "American Top 40 with Casey Kasem", you only hear "rican Top 40 with Casey K". It is just ridiculous and ruins the entire listening experience. There seems to be no way around this flaw either. It might be less of a problem for listeners of classical or other programming that normally has silence in between each song, but for those who listen to pop or rock or dance radio, this is really terrible, as bad as if a DJ totally messes up the transition between songs on the dancefloor- what we like to call a "trainwreck" of music.

This portable XM radio/25 hours of saved music, etc. is great.

I listen to 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's music during the day.

My husband listens to his baseball games at night.

If you also get the car kit, you can use it in your car.

4 out of 5 stars Great For XM kinda Okay for MP3.......2007-01-30

When i first got this device it was okay with it i liked that it can record XM which i find really awesome. But if you are a Subscription music fan (napster,Yahoo places like that) then here is the down side to this product. If this product supported subscription based music it would of gotten all 5 stars but it got a 4 but overall Sound Quality is great menues are great battery life is awesome memory is awesome but the MP3 with subscription music *point fingers down* not good. Hopes that Samsung will release a Firmware update to support Subscription music cause i don't wanna wait for a song that i want to listen to play on XM so that i can record it so 4 Stars!

4 out of 5 stars neat gadget.......2007-01-20

I am pleased with my purchase. I listen mainly to XM music so it doesn't matter that its not live. I plug it in at night to recharge and record and I take it to work in the morning and play it through the radio there with and fm transmitter. I can get all the latest music downloaded. The charge is great and the memory is great. Its very easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars A portable player with an endless library.......2007-01-18

Firstly, understand what this player is NOT. It is not a receiver that will allow you to receive Live XM broadcasts when you're out walking around. for that try the Samsung Helix.

What it IS, however, is a very good portable player that also has the ability to record ANY XM channel for playback (the player must be docked to record). What this effectively does is allow you to have a near-endless library of songs or talk shows, etc. that you can play on your device.

I love and have an iPod, but part of the problem is that I'm stuck listening to the songs that I have in my library. What the Nexus does is allow you to record various XM channels - then you can sort back through the songs and play the ones you like - very cool. You can still use it like an iPod as well and put music from your library onto the Nexus as well.

As for the functionality of the device, it's small but has a good build quality and fairly easy to use (albeit not as intuitive as the Ipod). The screen is monochrome with a blue backlight.

This unit also utilizes the XM Passport Mini-Tuner, which allows you to use one XM subscription on any Passport-ready hardware such as a factory-ready stereo unit, home tuner, etc. This is a big savings - perviously you had to purchase a new subscription for each separate XM device. Now with the Passport, you can have 1 subscription and simply take the small Passport chip with you and plug it in.

Overall, a very useful device and certainly a very good buy for the money.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Good recorder... if you get it to work with your PC........2007-06-28

This recorder is a sleek little device and has good features that I won't bother repeating here.

What is *very annoying* is the Digital Voice Editor software and the USB connectivity. I've re-installed the software numerous times without getting it to work. The recorder shows PC Link, the DVE software shows my recordings, but as 0.00.00 length! Clicking on a recording just gives an error.

Sony has a Windows Media Player plug-in, but WMP fails to recognize the recorder.

Dragon Naturally Pro 9 fails to recognize the recorder too. (This same model is sold with this software as ICD-SX46VTP)

USB connections (under Device Manager) shows the recorder but it doesn't show up anywhere else??

Sony support for this model is non-existent. Not even drivers in its support section.

After my frustrations with this recorder (and googling for answers), I've read that pretty much all the Sony Digital Recorders use the crappy DVE software. I would recommend that everyone stay away from Sony recorders just because of this DVE software.

Imagine the silliness of spending a big chunk of money on "digital" recorder, that will not even connect successfully to your PC?! I'd

4 out of 5 stars Love the recorder, hate the software.......2007-06-03

I love this recorder and never leave home without it: use it for interviews (excellent sound quality) and to listen to podcasts and so far, it's been very reliable. The only big problem is the software Digital Voice Editor 2. It's crappy, buggy, crashes all the time. It refuses to import certain types of podcasts (MP3 of 44 Mhz or more if I remember well.) The fact that Sony doesn't provide patches and updates for this awful software is pretty infuriating. I don't even know if it's Vista-compatible!

2 out of 5 stars Great hardware, terrible software........2007-06-01

I look at this scenario and think about Sega in the video game console market. Sega had great hardware (SMS, Genesis, CD, 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast etc) but poor or not enough software support. Sega bottomed up and had to leave the game console market to its rivals, Nintendo and Sony. Sony, if you don't wise up, you will face a similar demise, in the digital voice recorder market.

I am in business school and experience difficulties simultaneously taking notes for two hours straight and absorbing all of the professors' dictated material. I originally bought the Sony ICD-SX46 and was sorry I did. It's dependent on the Digital Voice Software and is egregiously slow transferring files. If you lose the software, Sony expects you to pay for new media. That is outrageous.

I went to B & H Photo and a salesman recommended the Olympus DS40. Although the Sony ICD-SX46 is sleeker and cooler looking, the Olympus DS40 is a little uglier, but simply more reliable. I had to return the Sony ICD-SX46.

I strongly suggest avoiding this recorder, unless you are willing to put up with the problems forementioned.

2 out of 5 stars Decent devise, terrible software. .......2007-05-02

I have had this for a year now. The unit itself is pretty high quality. Many options. The problem is the software. The digital voice editor software that comes with it is very limited and never was great. But, what's worst of all is you need to keep the disk with you and not lose it, because if the software has a glitch (like mine just did) and you are on the road, and you don't have the disk, you cannot hope to find the software to re-download to reinstall. Sony only posts updates to it, as if the software itself here was some valuable product to protect. It's a little proprietary player that also happens to be the ONLY way you can transfer the files to your computer. So, if it stops working, and you don't have disk, you are screwed. This is unacceptable in this day and age. It's not like ANYONE in the world would want to download and use this software for anything other than if you were using one of these units. It's essentially barely more than the driver you need to transfer (and you need it to convert) the files. Typical proprietary Sony, overprotecting things to the hurt of the customers who want just to use their product. (This is how Beta lost to VHS, in so many ways).

I would NOT buy this unit again for this reason.

1 out of 5 stars No way to download Digital Voice Editor Software.......2007-04-08

I bought the ICD-MX20 a week ago. I was surprised that Sony does not provide downloads of the associated software named "Digital Voice Editor". Sony Customer Service staff told me that if you lost the CD that came with the box, you had to buy a new one. Only patches of the software are available to download.

This immoral policy violating the norm of digital appliance industries and should not be encouraged. Sony is demoting its brand name by offering poor post-sales services. Think twice before making your buying decision.

5 out of 5 stars yamaha 5 disc dvd/cd all region changer/player.......2007-01-30

It's true, it may say region 1 but put in the code while the tray is open press 99990 and wait for 5 seconds "it should say all region" or something like that. your ready to go. seems like a good buy but I've only used it for a day so far. Yamaha is a quality name so it should live up to the rep. I'm stoked.

4 out of 5 stars No DVD-AUDIO/SACD, but There Are Few Titles Available in those Formats Anyway........2006-10-13

Ever since I discovered this player, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands. As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, 192-KHz, 24-Bit conversion is of great importance to me. One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature. For those titles which are currently only available on CD and possibly will never be released on DVD-AUDIO and/or SACD, this option converts standard CDs to the quality of DVD-AUDIO. On the Musical Theatre, Opera, and choral side of things, this player is capable of playing both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) DVDs on corresponding as well as opposite TVs. For certain titles in these genres, the North American editions are either four percent slower in tempo and picture movement and flatter in pitch than the European editions due to the method of PAL-to-NTSC conversion used by the distributors of such DVDs, or do not include as many bonus features as their original European counterparts. Sometimes, it can be the other way around, except the European editions might be four percent faster and sharper and have less bonus material than their original North American counterparts. On both ends of the spectrum, if the audio pitch is corrected without changing the audio speed to keep the picture and sound in synch, a subaudible breaking-up effect may be noticed as the result of slight artifacts from slightly bending or stretching the pitch in the conversion process. However, because of this player's bicompatibility with both color systems, I have the freedom to choose and purchase whatever editions are the best. Although it is not in the manual, this player can be made multi-region compatible including RCE DVDs. Turn on the DVD player. Make sure there are no discs loaded. With the tray open, using its supplied remote control, slowly press 99990. Wait for the 'Region 0' message to disappear. Close the tray. Now you can play any kind of optical disc without thinking about it. The only little flaw with this player's firmware is that when the 'All Discs' repeat mode is selected, when playing DVDs, after playing through all the titles, instead of moving on to the next disc, it returns to the home menu. If Yamaha could do a minor revision to the firmware which engages that same menu bipass as when repeating a single DVD, the machine would change DVDs automatically. I discovered this by reauthoring DVDs without any of their menus using DVD Shrink Version 3.2. In conclusion, if you are looking for a DVD player with high video compatibility*, you have come to the right place! *Others have reported problems playing 'Dual Discs'--a type of disc which includes DVD-VIDEO on one side or layer, and CD DIGITAL AUDIO on another, also known as 'Hybrids.' However, big names, such as Panasonic, Sony, and Pioneer, do not recommend using these discs in their players.

1 out of 5 stars HIGH-END HISS HURTS AN OTHERWISE GOOD PRODUCT.......2007-06-03

UPDATE of June 9, 2007:

I have had the Sony noted below for two days. There is NO COMPARISON between it and the Teac review below. The Sony is a JOY. Caveat Emptor.
----------------

I got this TEAC based on the reviews listed here. It looked like a sterling product. Already owning a TEAC CD recorder (a great product), I thought this unit would be similar but simply devoid of recording capabilities. Here is my case why those listening to classical music may not find this product suitable to their tastes. (6/9/07: Actually, I was being too kind saying it is not good for just classical; I now believe this player is really completely unsuited for ANY uses).

First of all, the instruction manual for the recorder says the pickup is a Sanyo, while the pickup in the player is a Sony. So, there is no direct pedigree. Second, they operate on different laser wavelengths. All that would be fine, except that the player (at least the one I have) has pronounced background hiss.

I detected this when I played back on the player a CD anthology made from an original on the Teac CD recorder (again, an excellent product). Turning up the volume revealed a lot of system hiss. I need to mention that my complete system includes an advanced Dynamic Noise Reduction unit, so I am used to recording material so that whatever hiss is in the orignal is NOT in it afterwards. So, when I then compared the CD player's sound to a cassette tape of the same material made some years ago on a Nakamichi BX-300 in Dolby C and TDK MA metal tape, there was no hiss--as expected. The TAPE sounded dramatically better. I then went out and bought a regular (uncopied) CD pristine in plastic wrap of the same material. Opened for the first time and put in the Teac player, the SAME backgound hiss resulted. To limit this to the Teac player, I then put this CD on a Sony WALKMAN CD player and there was no background hiss at equal volume. A $29 portable seemed to have better flat response than the Teac player. I went through a literal check-list of possible sources, including changing-out the cables from player to my Pioneer Elite amp. No go, the hiss is clearly sourced in the Teac.

I have just bought a Sony SCD-CE595 (on Amazon--priced LESS than the TEAC and which includes SACD and optical output at that) in the hope that this will better my system. I do not blame the Sony pickup in the Teac, only what I think is Teac's equalization in it. A potential buyer of this unit needs to be aware of this high-end hiss problem, especially if classical is what he or she listens to. For me, it is unsuited for my purposes. One Star. Others may like sizzling rock and find this a Five Star. (6/9/07): But my opinion then is, they either have hearing losses or do not know what a better unit at similar price can do--or want MP3 capability so badly (the Sony doesn't have this--and I won't EVER use MP3 with its limited quality) that they will overlook the lack of sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compact Disc Player.......2007-03-11

Good quality basic compact disc player. No digital output or optical output, but totally not necessary, most people cannot tell the difference anyway. Quality transport and extremely quiet mechanism when playing at low volumes compared to some other compact players that I have owned. Aesthetically, it is a nice looking player, with sort of a throw back look. Overall, money well spent for a very nice compact disc player.

5 out of 5 stars great CD player.......2007-03-09

TEAC ? lets see , they have been in the audio bis for as long as I can remember . their transports are very intense and their electronics are spot on . if you go in to a store and ask them if they have any CD players they will look at you funny and say what? I was impressed by the looks and the petty blue LCD on the front . and it has a headphone jack . surprise !!!!!!! great unit for MP3s and overall a very nice unit . I wish they made a 6 disc cass/changer too . oh well >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

basic single cd player that seems to play well and be reliable. But I've only had it a month.

5 out of 5 stars 5-CD Carousel Changer.......2007-03-19

I am totally happy with this CD player. I had one before made by Teac that was similar to this one and it lasted 10 years. It's easy to hook up and plays beautifully. I would recommend this product to anyone.
