With its brushed-aluminum lid, shiny silver faceplate, and blue backlit display, the Philips AZ7594 looks like one of those secret-agent gadgets that saves the day as James Bond drives off in his bulletproof sports car. Although this portable CD player won't annihilate any villains, it did blow us away with its technically advanced features and excellent digital-to-analog converter.

The AZ7594 plays rewritable CDs, which is great if you've got a CD-RW recorder and you like to make compilation discs. The player runs on both rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and standard alkaline batteries. For AA batteries, a detachable "box" connects to the back with contact pins. Playing time is rated at an impressive 45 hours with the NiMHs and 40 hours with AA batteries.

The AZ7594 has a 45-second memory buffer and includes a car adapter kit. In addition, the player comes with a remote extension that plugs into the headphone jack and allows you to adjust volume, as well as pause, stop, play, and skip tracks. Philips wisely opted not to build the remote control into the headphone cord. Instead, it comes as a separate 2-foot adapter, which allows you to upgrade to a high-quality pair of headphones and still use the volume control and CD function switches. Either way, the remote extension adds 2 feet to the length of your headphone cord.

To test the player's sonic capabilities, we listened to a wide variety of CDs, from electric blues to progressive rock to contemporary female vocals. Thanks to the player's digital-to-analog converter (DAC)--which provides excellent channel separation--the headphones were well balanced, delivering smooth stereo transitions from one speaker to another.

Although the headphones demonstrated decent bass, they had a tendency to distort the upper midrange at high volumes. Philips does offer a three-stage bass boost, but we found level three to be a bit bloated and artificial sounding. In short, the player's built-in DAC is superb, but the headphones are only slightly above average. If rock is your passion, we recommend upgrading to a better pair.

No matter what kind of music suits your fancy, the Philips AZ7594 is an excellent investment. Unlike many portable CD players, the AZ7594 is made to last. It's loaded with state-of-the-art features, and its polished design won't fade out of style. --Eric Gill

Amazon.com Product Description

Philips designed an ultracompact, sophisticated portable CD player with the AZ 7594. It features all the basics you've come to expect but also includes such features as introscan, which allows you to review a disc to find any desired track. The AZ 7594 is also CD-rewritable compatible so you can play CDs you've recorded yourself. To protect your listening experience from bumps or jumps the AZ 7594 delivers Electronic Shock Absorption technology. It stores digital music bits read from the disc in a memory chip with a memory buffer capacity of 45 seconds. This stored information is used to fill in gaps that may occur during playback.

The Powersave mode accommodates a long playing time of 45 hours. The power-saving measures include power off at the end of a CD to conserve battery power. It uses a standard NiMH rechargeable battery with a built-in system that recharges when you plug the player in with the AC adapter. To make operation more convenient, the AZ 7594 has a three-key remote that includes a volume control dial. Other features include 99-track programming, shuffle, repeat for one or all tracks, next/previous track, and forward/reverse search with sound.

The six-digit LCD screen is a stylish blue with backlighting. It indicates track in play, playing time, selected CD functions, Dynamic Bass Boost setting, battery condition, and antishock on/off. This model includes ergonomically designed headphones, an AC adapter, rechargeable batteries, and a carrying pouch.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for design and use But 4 stars for durability.......2000-09-10

First i wanna say that this has been the FAR best cd playere ive ever used. Every Philips purchase ive ever made has satisfied me. I didint even need a portable cd player at the time i looked at this and i had an old sony that worked just fine but looked up to this cd player. I was sheer amazed that someone would put so much into one cd player even for its price and if it was anyone it was Philips. When i saw this cd player i fell in love with it becuase im just an average 15 year old that likes to listin to music. my probloms with my old cd player were that

1. i like to listin to music in the dark and id have to find a light to change stuff on it. The Philips had a backlit lcd that's very bright.

2. My cd player would skip when i put it in my pocket and rode my bike. But the philips Has 45 seconds of esp witch is way more than i needed. Every time i use this thing its never skipped.

3. It did not have a remote control so i would have to reach in my pocket when riding my bike to get it out and change things on it. But with the Philips i just have my handy dandy remote on my pocket that Changes my volume, switches to the next track, stops and plays, and it has a hold button so nothin bumps it and when you put the cd unit on hold the remote can still switch tasks on it.

4. I went through batteries like a dog on a peice of meat. But even with the Philips 45 seconds of esp. the Nikel-Cadium-lithium-Ion batteries hold up for days. And every time i lay my cd player down i just hit stop twice and it charges them up so i got a full tank and you dont even have to take them out. And its got an extra batterie pack so when you go on those long trips it wont run out.

5. Batteries alwase fell out the bottom of it. The philips has inside batterie compartment so that they wont.

6. It got beat up very bad every time i dropped it it made a scratch. And with the philips ALUMINUM lid efvery time i dropped it noting happend to it.

7. It did not play Rewritable cds so when i make mixes i gotta use a new blank CD-r Every time. And the Philips uses cd-rw fluently

8. It Had NO style and did not look good. The philips is a stunning desingn and amazed my freinds.

9. I could barley read the lcd it was so small . But the Philips Has A massive display ON the top so its very easy to read

There was only one downside to this great cd player is that a month after i had it the back left hinge for the door broke off, i was very dissapointed i had the same problom humby27 (see his review on this page) had and this thing became very hard to use and i explained it to amazon to return it and they said thed be glad to return it WITH FREE SHIPPING too. That made it a lil better but i wanted a replacement since i loved this thing so much. and trust my luck there out of stock. I have looked everywhere for this cd player on the internet and can only find it here. I have tried to find an alternative to this cd player and i just cant find it. Besides Sonys top of the line walkman witch is $487 and theres no way im paying that.

Bottom line is that i hope that if you buy this it will stay durable and not break. but this is an awesome cd player and i recccomend it greatly.

5 out of 5 stars Top Name, Top Quality!.......2000-08-12

Not only is Philips Magnavox a top brand name, it is also known for quality. The main things I like about this cd player was the bass. You have three stages of bass and the second stage is about as much as you get with other cd players, but this has one more to give you even more! Another thing I like about the cd player, is it's 45 second ESP. A 10-20 ESP will get you by, but if you are active as me, a 45 second ESP will give you un-skipped music, 24/7. The extra battery pack you get with the player makes it so you can play for over 40 hours, what other cd player has over 20??? The music quality is excellent! One flaw that I had was the headphones, two days after I received the cd player, they stopped working, I don't know why, but if you do decide to buy this cd player, buy another set, the headphones were good, but not lasting. You will not go wrong on this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONE!.......2000-08-11

I would just have to say this is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Out of all the cd players (sony, panasonic) I ever owned this is the one that tops them all.

First off the sound is incredible. It has a very nice balance between the bass and treble, unlike many sony products which just shoot out bass and no other frequencies The 3 level bass control is a great feature- it's not like panasonic or sony's where there's bass or no bass at all- its always nice to have a midway.

The user interface is also nicely done- very easy to find and use- clean.

The back lit lcd interface is easy to read and great for those low light situations.

The anitshock really works. I literally shook this cd player until my hands got tired.

The only thing I didn't like about it were the headphone- clumsy and a bit big- BUT I always end up buying new headphones anyway.

For the price and the features this is the one!

2 out of 5 stars Great sound and battery life, but durability needs work.......2000-08-08

It's been about 10 years since I bothered with a portable CD player, so I looked for one with a good combination of sound quality, battery life, playback features, and durability. I based my choice of this player in part on good experience with other Philips products, and in part on others' ratings of the product. (Having that Amazon promotional gift certificate helped too....)

When I received the player, I was indeed pleased with the sound quality and the playback features. The included headphones had a tinny quality, but I intended to use this through my home stereo quite a bit, and it did well for that. And in any case I had another set of headphones I preferred to use, and it sounded great with those.

The various playback modes (shuffle, repeat, program, scan) leave nothing wanting. The included rechargeable battery lasted at least 18 hours between charges, very impressive. I tried high-capacity AAs once and got probably 40 hours of playback out of them (using the included battery box that doubles the player's battery capacity from 2 AA to 4 AA).

This was the first CD player I've used with anti-skip protection, and that was a pleasant surprise. I never did manage to make a CD skip, in any playback mode. It worked fine through walking, running, cycling, mowing lawns, driving, all of it -- no skips, no pauses of any kind. And it worked with heavily scratched CDs, or CDs that would result in skips on my car stereo CD player or my home player.

The downside? This unit is not very durable. It looks good, feels like it can survive just about anything. But the lid is held in place but two small plastic nubs that, if broken, render the thing useless. Just under one month after I received it, the lid snapped clean off when I was changing CDs.

This is a good unit, but if durability is of any concern at all, think carefully before you choose this player. By all means be extremely careful when you open the device.

5 out of 5 stars It's good........2000-08-02

I bought this same CD player for a friend about a year ago and paid close to $140 for it. I then ended up barrowing it a couple time and knew then that I got my money's worth. The best feature is the rechargable batteries, which last for a long time. The skip protection is great, the first thing that My Friend did when he opened it was plug it in, put in a CD and started shaking it very hard and there wern't any skips. When I put it in my car I don't even have to turn on the extra skip protection it is still skip free except over railroad tracks. Now it's time for me to buy a new CD player and this is the only one that I even considered buying, however I couldn't find it anywhere until I looked on Amazon.com. It's also forty dollars less than I paid for it a year ago, but it's worth much more.
