Small, rugged, and loaded with useful features, Panasonic's SL-SW895 is a paragon of style and portability. Its high-quality, 40-second anti-skip protection guards against listening interruptions during active use, while the supplied "Brainshaker" headphones use a feature called VMSS, which induce vibrations--coincident with the music--which provide the sensation of bass frequencies too low or too powerful for the headphones to reproduce. VMSS may be selected or disabled using the headphones' inline (wired) remote control. The SL-SW895 runs on two AA batteries (not supplied), from which it derives 20 hours of continuous playback with anti-skip protection off and 25 hours with protection on.
For customized listening, the SL-SW895 permits 24-track programming. The unit offers a bass-boost feature (S-XBS), which emphasizes low frequencies in the headphones or in any devices connected from the headphone jack. Use the player's hold switch to prevent unintended (and possibly battery-wasting) changes of state, such as starting playback from a stopped state when the player is jostled inside a backpack or purse. Resume lets you continue playback from the last-played point, and random play shuffles the track sequence for more surprising, radio-like listening.
The headphone jack and DC power input both come with handy rubber seals to keep dirt out when the ports are not in use. A low-battery indicator on the display alerts you to the need to change batteries soon. The unit is capable of powering portable speakers (not included) from its headphone jack, and you can use car adapter model SH-COC9 (not included) for in-vehicle enjoyment.
What's in the Box
CD player, hand grip, AC power adapter, stereo headphones, and a user's manual.

Shockwave Metal series portable CD players deliver ultra-toughness in sophisticated, thin, compact, water-resistant designs. Another indispensable feature for outdoor use is the One-Touch Lock & Release System. This easy-to-use lock system is designed to help keep the top cover firmly secured to the player even when things get tough.Shockwave Metal series headphone stereos boast ultra-slim designs with a metallic finish offering an appearance of urban sophistication. The aluminum body, together with the floating construction and side rubber protector, provide outstanding shock resistance to protect the internal mechanism. To further assure the toughness required for outdoor, on-the-move entertainment, the Twist Lock System keeps the cassette lid firmly secured.Panasonic's Brain Shaker Extreme VMSS (Virtual Motion Sound System) has made it possible for you to experience truly exciting music reproduction. So now you can feel the emotional energy of your favorite music as an actual vibration sound. A special built-in amplifier in the main unit picks up and boosts the bass signal at 50Hz. The VMSS unit, located on the part of the horizontal type headphones at the back of your neck, transforms bass signals into vibrations. You can actually feel the vibration of bass signals, which are not typically reproduced by headphones.Customer Reviews:

Battle Tested... And Approved.......2002-07-22
The unit itself is metal, which doesnt sound like that big a difference until it's been subjected to 130+ degrees. The only downsides that I have seen from the unit itself is (1) my volume knob has some sand in it, so it's not 100%, and the "hold" switch, which has yet to fail me, seems poorly designed. The cherry on top is the waterproof feature, yes, it's waterproof, go ahead and spill anything on it; It's also sandproof, I haven't gotten any sand in the player in 2 months. 4 and a half stars for the player itself.
On to the headphones... This is the weakest point of the player. The headphones themselves are uncomfortable (not padded); any movement and they fall out, but forget about laying down with them on, they're built for maximum discomfort. The vibrating feature is novel, but after the bass "bulb" vibrates against the base of your neck for a while, you'll wish they had included a different set of headphones. -1 star for the headphones.
I've had varying degrees of success with using different headphones: My beat-up Sony earbuds work well; my JVC headphones (big DJ Style headphones) although bulky, have the best sound; the Kenwood earbuds I bought are junk.
Your mileage may vary, but with a different set of headphones, this is a great portable CD player, even if the harshest environment you encounter is sitting around the house. If you spend more time outside than in, this is the CD player for you. If you are going on an overseas deployment, this is a must have.
