3 out of 5 stars so-so player.......2007-06-30

I really wanted this for the tv tuner because I like to listen to tv where I work. Unfortunately I don't think the tuner is so hot. The cd player is fine-good sound etc. But the tv tuner is very hard to tune in and I was disappointed that something like this didn't come with an adapter for saving battery power. The fm reception is also not so hot-very hard to tune in fm stations and nothing at all on am. Sorry but this one's just so-so for me.

2 out of 5 stars Not good.......2007-05-24

I'm very sorry to report that this CD player didn't work. I was surprised since I've always like Sony products.

First of all whenever I put a CD or an MP3 disc into the player it made a chirping sound regularly and skipped pretty consistently. I tried several discs with the same problem. I consulted the Sony website and worked through the troubleshooting suggestions and it still did not work. I bought it at Target for $49.99 and returned it today for a full refund.

I didn't give it one star because when it did play it sounded great. The earbuds were comfortable and stayed in my ears. The radio sounded very good too. The TV sound was terrible and was only able to pick up channel 5 in Los Angeles.

The other thing was the controls. The buttons were too small and very difficult to work. It was not intuitive at all! If this player had worked I probably would have lived with it. But since the one I bought was defective, I will not buy another one. I'm looking for another player with more simplified control buttons.

Sony has other units out there. I would recommend that you skip this one and get something else.

5 out of 5 stars A Good One.......2007-05-16

This a good Player, Good Song & beautiful player. Buy it now

4 out of 5 stars GOOD SYSTEM.......2007-05-13

I really appreciate the ATRAC compression system available on Sony's products. I sprend a great deal of time riding a bicycle and the fact that you can compress 10 audio CDs on one ATRAC CD results in more riding and less fiddiling with changing CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Needed Atrac player.......2007-04-02

I purchased this player because my other Sony Atrac player's screen went kaput. So I knew what I was getting. They are great for the Atrac system that allows you to place about 24 hrs of music on one CD.

Representing the latest generation of Sony's Walkman players, the DNS313F is water- resistant, stylish, and tough enough for everything from downhill ski trips to vigorous jogging workouts. Audio-wise, the DNS313F is compatible with CD, CD-R, and CD-RW formats, with support for MP3s stored on a CD-R/RW--the perfect feature for listeners who already have extensive MP3 music libraries. As a result, you can create large custom MP3 playlists tailored to your listening preference, a handy feature when designing a workout soundtrack. In addition, the device offers no shortage of playback options, with such features as repeat play, track programming, and shuffle play.

2 out of 5 stars Good CD player BAD radio.......2007-06-02

The first CD player had such bad FM radio reception that I contacted Sony and was told to return it. I got another one, and the FM reception is almost as bad, so I've realized that it is the player itself. There is an incredible amount of bleed-over from one station to another even though it has a digital tuner. It is not just a matter of poor reception. The stations play fine on other portable devices; it's that the radio on this player is VERY POOR.

5 out of 5 stars The best in it's class! Get 'em while they're hot. .......2007-05-28

Two Sony Style employees told me that Sony is not making any more portable tape players (the last were made in Nov 2006) and they are soon going to phase out their ATRAC and mp3 CD players. If you are looking, grab this unit (or two if you can) because it won't be long before they are unavailable. I think the $60 price reflects this.

The unit is constructed well with a solid case, a beautiful finish and easy to access buttons. The buttons also have a solid feel, and they are recessed. You won't be hitting them on accident. The unit has a hold switch on the back, so hitting buttons on accident shouldn't be an issue anyway. There's a seal around the lid, so it is water resistant. I find comfort in this because I have a three-year old son.

FM reception is very good for a portable unit. A few years ago, it was difficult to find FM on a portable, despite the fact that companies had been making portable CD players since the early 90's. AM reception is good too if that is your thing.

I usually don't pay much attention to the included headphones, but this pair is great. If I use my iPod headphones as a comparison, the Sony headphones are much better. They have a nice airy sound with good reproduction, and the iPod headphones have a flat lifeless reproduction. When you are playing a good CD it almost seems as if the sound is all around you.

I look at the mp3 feature as "icing on the cake." I do use mp3s, but the whole point of this purchase was to hear the higher sound quality of CDs. If I wanted to hear mp3s, I'd use my smaller iPod. BUT I did create a few mp3 CDs to test the quality and the ease of use and the unit did very well. There's a "group" button that allows the user to jump from folder to folder and it works well. I have an older Sony CD player with mp3 playback and it was very difficult to change directories. Here everything is simplified and useful. My only gripe with the mp3 feature is that the name of the song is not displayed on the LCD screen. The engineers opted to show them as track numbers. So it's hard to know what album you are on when you are looking at track 63. This is only a minor complaint.

Another drawback is the lack of TV playback. Other Walkman units have this feature and I wonder why Sony didn't just throw it in for good measure.

Overall, I give this CD player 5 stars because it delivers well in everything it does. Great AM/FM, high sound quality, solid construction, user friendly, optional DC jack, nice headphones and MP3 playback. Well worth the asking price. I would have paid double!

5 out of 5 stars A Super Durable CD Player.......2007-05-22

This player is excellent. I have never had a bad sony player in over 20 yrs. My old ones still work but did not have CD back then yet.
Nice design and color with wriststrap which is very important to get used to wearing so as not to forget player. Develop good habits to take care of it and it should last a long time. Although the description says it does not have an AC adaptor ability I would like to inform that it does have an AC input plug to use to not always have to need batteries. But adaptor is not included so we must buy it.
I love my player and can walk miles a day with my Freestyle music driving me ever onward. It takes a beating and does not miss or skip beats. It is remarkable.
Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD player!!.......2007-05-17

If you like to walk or jog, this is the best CD player I have found. It is great!! I have enjoyed it! It's worth every penny. Remember, you get what you pay for! I searched through all of them on Amazon, this one
had the best feedback, and now I know why!

4 out of 5 stars good player.......2007-05-12

I stopped buying portable CD players for a long time because they always had rotten AM/FM reception. Sometimes I am right under the Empire State Building and sometimes I am in NJ. So it always happens that on FM I need excellent strong signal ability and good weak signal ability. You don't always get both, even with a local/DX setting. This radio performs adequately in both environments. It isn't the most sensitive radio on the block, but when you set it to local, it doesn't fold up and die in the city. The CD player runs well for many many hours on 2500 mAhr NiMh. Get a good set of them and never waste your money on regular batteries again. The supplied headphones are the around the ear lobe type and sound good. I killed mine in 1 day when the cord got caught on a door knob, that's the story of my life with headphones. Sound quality from CD is very good, I noticed a slight lack of extreme highs when using th G force protection, but that went away when I set that to off. Shocks don't seem to be a bother to the player with it off, but I don't jog. Besides, you cant judge fidelity if you are running. It's a good machine, I like it, I don't leave home without it and a bunch of CD's. Four stars because it could be a little more sensitive on AM.

3 out of 5 stars Battery Hog.......2007-05-13

I'm pretty happy with this product so far. It took a little bit for me to get the hang of the volume control mechanism. It only takes one AA battery, but you'll go through them like water.

4 out of 5 stars Practical.......2007-05-09

This is a nice little player for those odd novel disks that come in MP3 format.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD player.......2007-05-08

This CD player has all the features I was looking for, sounds great, and was an excellent value!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD WALKMAN.......2007-03-29

NEVER HAVING HAD ONE OF THESE BEFORE, I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. VERY NICE PRODUCT, ALTHOUGH ITS CLAIM THAT ONE BATTERY LASTS 40 HOURS SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE MISLEADING, UNLESS I JUST HAD A BAD BATTERY. AM KEEPING TRACK OF HOW LONG THIS SECOND BATTERY LASTS. DOES NOT COME WITH A PLUG IN ADAPTER, AS MENTIONED ON AMAZON'S DESCRIPTION, SO YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF THAT.

4 out of 5 stars An overachiever but still practical and dependable........2007-03-28

I'm was simply looking for the least expensive "ordinary" CD player that could be counted on to read disks for an extended period of time. When I received this player and looked at the instructions, I was far from encouraged by all the compressed gadgetry (18 different playback modes all accessible through a single tiny joystick that also controls functions like play, volume and "parametric" equalization, the latter requiring my son's help should I feel any need to access it). Now I'm glad I picked this one up before the clutter gets worse. When I last checked, the Sony site had dropped this model (DNE330) and is advertising only the model that throws in an all-purpose tuner for another 20 bucks.

Frankly, I could do without the software package and infinite array of compression ratios and playback choices. The ATRAC format squeezes the files down to bit rates of 48, 64 and 66 kbps and shrinks MPEG files to as few as 8 kbps (128 kbps is considered the norm, below which audio "fidelity" is all but an illusion). If you have time on your hands and a desire to see if you can crowd as many audio files on a CD as angels on the head of a pin, Sony obviously knows its customers. But I'd be happier with larger, fewer, more user-friendly controls and some sort of LED for night-time reading of the display.

Sony is obviously thinking of the active user, providing a practically invisible and inaccessible latch key for opening the player (I'm hoping that added practice will make it less of a time-waster). Also, I was hoping the battery compartment would be on the outside rather than the inside, where it's far less convenient and more vulnerable to broken lids. Otherwise, the long life of the single battery required to run the unit should make it easy to forget about AC adapters or rechargeables. Obviously, Sony (and perhaps everyone else) is designing these things with joggers and downloades in mind, rather than listeners who simply want a basic, simple, dependable CD player.

Nonetheless, it sounds great, plays CDs I once thought were beyond help, is not easily bumped or jarred, has a good-sized display screen (for daytime use), is featherweight, and has a surprisingly useful remote control. (The ear buds look like a balancing act not worth the bother. Also, if it doesn't play, look underneath for the slider switch, which came in the on-hold position.)

2 out of 5 stars can't see controls.......2007-04-04

With small black on black controls and a hard to open case, this unit is a disaster. Plays nice, but what good is that when you can't put in a CD or operate the controls?

3 out of 5 stars Sony Walkman CD review.......2007-03-29

I don't like the headphones that came with my portable CD player, they are flimsy and don't stay in my ears very well. The CD player itself works well.

4 out of 5 stars Sony DEJ010BLK Walkman.......2007-03-27

Works well. Only drawback as I see it are that the controls are awkward to use because of their mounting on the side of the unit and are verrrry small; also the LCD readout is difficult to read - would be better if it were LED instead.

3 out of 5 stars Attractive package - hard to use.......2007-03-17

Yes, it looks cool - it sounds good and works well, but what were these Sony engineers thinking? The controls are practically invisible. The beveled edge of the unit make the buttons unreadable. Opening the unit to insert a new disc requires picking up the unit to slide the latch over. If you plan to use this as a table top player - such as on your nightstand, forget it! Look at another model. But, the sound is clear and true, the bass controlled.

4 out of 5 stars Good Purchase.......2007-03-09

For the price, the sound quality is very good - after all it's a Sony.

Fits up to 490 songs on 1 CD-R/RW disc.

Amazon.com Product Description

Get the most from your digital music listening with Sony's D-NE900 portable CD player, which includes SonicStage CD Simple Burner software so you can take full advantage of ATRAC3plus (Sony's proprietary music-compression technology) when making custom MP3 CDs on your computer. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and--thanks to Sony's great work in DSP efficiency--an incredible 85 hours of playback from the supplied gumstick rechargeable battery and a single AA battery (not included) in the unit's external battery case.

A supplied carrying pouch and slimstick backlit remote control simplify use when you're on the go. The player also includes Sony's popular jog dial control for easy folder navigation, a 4-line dot-matrix display, advanced file navigation with full ID3 tag recognition, and bookmark playback (which lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button). CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, SonicStage CD Simple Burner software transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.

ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps).

Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-NE900's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle.

Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of 2 settings.

What's in the Box
CD player, MDR-027 stereo headphones, LCD Remote Commander remote control, rechargeable battery (NH-14WM), backlit battery-charging stand, external battery case (AA x 1, battery not included), a CD-ROM (Sonic Stage software), a carry case, an AC power adapter, a user's manual, and warranty information.

4 out of 5 stars Four and a Half Stars.......2005-10-11

Plusses:

- Good sound quality (not excellent) typical of Sony portables. The "active" sound setting seems to be the best at volume, and the "custom" equalizer setting is nice if you need to compensate for too much bass or treble within a recording. I was listening to a CD today, for instance, that had too much treble, so I switched the setting to "custom" and turned the treble down a little, while boosting the bass a smidge.

- Absolutely will not skip, which is nice because the last Sony Discman I owned would skip if the wind blew in China.

- Durable. I dropped it today on my kitchen's linoleum floor from about four feet. Not only did it not skip, but it just kept playing like nothing happened.

- The supplied headphones are okay (not great). If you're serious about sound you'll use better headphones.

- Very intuitive controls on both the CD player and the remote control. After a few minutes of practice you get it down.

- Battery life is great.

- The aesthetics of the player are nice, and this is the slimmest player I've ever experienced.

- The info screens on the player and the remote are large and, well, informative.

- I haven't tried the ATRAC dealio, and I'm not sure I will, but I'm glad that the player will play just about anything I throw at it, including older, scratched CDs, MP3s, etc.

Minuses:

- Doesn't get loud enough. You can make it loud, but you sacrifice sound quality and depth, even in good headphones (I use Sennheiser HD280pros). Perhaps a separate headphone amplifier would improve the volume issue.

- The player and remote controls are a bit chinsy. The jog wheel on the player, for instance, is a bit tough to turn in a plasticky sort of way. In other words, there's a lot of plastic here, rather than heavier, smoother metal.

Summation:

High quality player for those who are picky about sound and features. The plastic issue can't be fixed, but the volume issue can, although you'd have to shell out some more bucks for a headphone amplifier. Also, I'd recommend this player only if you have a good set of headphones, or are not worried about the sound through the supplied, complimentary, headphones. The price here at Amazon was the best I was able to find after thorough research and it was shipped in one day for free.

Rating: Four and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Small and powerful.......2005-09-18

Initially I was just looking for a small CD player so that I could listen to recorded books when I wasn't in the car. Then I discovered ATRAC software and (even though I thought it sounded too good to be true) knew I wouldn't be happy with JUST a CD player. I did a little research and decided a remote control would also be essential. So, the D-NE900 was in the running but seemed a tad expensive until I found a great deal at Amazon.

I've been more than pleased with it. (My husband must be tired of hearing me gloat about it!) And the ATRAC software has become a necessity (instead of a luxury) since I can no longer play CDs from the library in my new car's CD player.

The car was about 6 weeks old when a borrowed CD got stuck in the changer and I had to take it in to the dealership's Service Dept. They gave me a new changer and had to send the other one off to extricate the CDs. (Thank goodness it was warranty work!) The service rep says it doesn't matter what make car you have, CDs that have inventory labels (such as from the library) or even CDs YOU BURN have a chance of getting stuck. He said you should only play recorded CDs you buy from the store.

So...I still rent the CD books from the library but I record them into the ATRAC format and listen to them on my D-NE900 in the car and anywhere else I decide to take it. So far the most I've transferred is 24 CDs (2 books) onto 1 ATRAC CD, but it will hold more. And the battery life is amazing. The only problem I've had is when the PLAY button must've gotten pushed accidentally - I've made sure to use the LOCK buttons since then and haven't had that problem anymore. It took me a little while to learn all the remote functions but I'm so glad I have the remote! I just put the player in a fanny pack, clip the remote to my clothes and away I go.

I would definitely recommend the Sony D-NE900.

5 out of 5 stars DNE900B review.......2005-05-09

I am posting this review to assist anyone else after info on this model, as I could find very few reviews on it anywhere. I have only owned the thing for a month (black version of course - they go faster/sound better), so these are some preliminary thoughts. I hope this is of some use - email me if you have any queries.

THE PLAYER
I spent a while wondering whether to get this Sony or an I-River IMP job. Getting both was the clear solution, but alas not practical. Have read good and bad reviews of the IMP players, not sure what swung me to the Sony. Either would probably be fine.

The player is excellent (but was too expensive!). Very slim, solid construction, the thing looks and feels tough. Recessed plug socket for the phones/remote is a nice touch. Have had no problems with the life of the battery. I have been using it solely on the internal single battery, playing audio discs and MP3s (not ATRAC), and it's lasted a long time. The external battery pack is strange. Could find no description of this thing anywhere before I bought it. Essentially you can attach the external pack, with single AA battery to front of the player, either by itself, or in conjunction with the internal battery. I do not use it, as it is clearly fragile (plastic) and ruins the ergonomic design of the whole thing. I keep it in a pack as back-up, but as I bought a spare rechargeable battery I may never use this. However, you can attach the external battery pack and recharge the internal battery by plugging DC into the external battery pack. Recharge cradle works well.

Player has lots of features. Reads discs quickly and have had no problems with play-back. As several people have noted, the bass is not particulary 'heavy'. Altho digital bass is mentioned, there is no separate bass boost facility, just the parametric equalisr. The equaliser offers several settings, and you can set your own 'custom' settings. This feature is quite confusing! You can modify the low, mid and high. Three parts of each frequency range (ie 9 settings), set the volume for each, however, the weird thing is that you can ony modify ONE part of each of the three subsets of each frequency bands - once you modify one of the three subsets it cancels out the previous modification you may have done. Very strange, if anyone can figure this out, please let me know, I can't work it out. You should be able to modify the volume setting of all 9 subsets, but I can find no way - you can only modify one of each 3, ie 3 in total.

Yes, this thing will give woeful sound if you use crap headphones. Here in Australia we get some in-ear jobs supplied. They have cables that are way too short, so I simply plugged in another set of Sony in-ears and these sound great.

The remote is excellent, but takes some getting used to. The backlight facility is good. Easy to bump other buttons while using some, so the 'one-hand' claim may be a bit optimistic. I also worry that the thing's cable connection points are fragile. As I destroyed my last player by dropping it three times, I keep this player in a bag and use the remote all the time, works fine.

SOFTWARE

Being a luddite not yet able to afford or embrace an MP3 player/IPOD type thing, I got this as a compromise, knowing little about compression formats etc. Here is a summary of what I've found:

Sonic Stage is confusing and difficult to work. As an on-computer library it is not as good as Windows Media or ITunes. It has no graphic eq feature that I copuld find. When burning an ATRAC CD I could only get one of my two burner drives to be recognised. I also found strange problems where after ripping tracks to ATRAC I could not then burn them to disc, the software kept saying that there's no authorisation to burn or something similar, perhaps this has something to do with copy control - I have no idea but it convinced me to ditch the idea of using ATRAC files completely.

Ther is no way you can burn an ATRAC CD that includes existng MP3 files on the same disc - the software will convert them to ATRAC or not burn them. ATRAC sounds great, but I can't use ATRAC files on any other library program like ITunes or Windows Media, so I will not be using ATRAC. There is NO way that I can find to convert ATRAC files to MP3 using Sonic Stage or any other software, so it's a case of keeping 2 copies of a track if you want ATRAC and MP3.

I use Music Match Jukebox to rip tracks as MP3. One user suggested ripping to MP3PRO and playing on the DNE900, but I believe that the DNE900, even though it wil play the Mp3PRO file, will not play the separate high-frequency component of the file, so the sound is not as good as straight MP3. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The player will not play WMA files. Therefore there's not much point rippping to MP3PRO and playing on the SONY. I rip the tracks as straight MP3 files and use Windows Media Player as my standard libray/plyer on the computer. WM player has a burning facility but I can't work out how to set up folders on the CD to burn so I use Nero to burn the MP3 discs (the version I use doesn't recognise ATRAC so I can't use this to mix ATRAC and MP3 files either).I like ITunes but opted for WM player. The DNE900 plays MP3 files well, it will use more battery power to play these than ATRAC apparently but that's OK.

That's about it. Have fun, let me know how you go!

1 out of 5 stars low quality for a stratospheric price.......2005-02-23

Never buy this player. It is a waste of money. i own the european version and This was my second cd player. My first one was a cheap German Low quality thingie but considering the price this is even worse.

The main downpoints are the earphones. The wire is way too short (15cm?) and the sound quality is low. Also this player seriously lacks the bass boost and volume. I like listening to loud music so it is very frustrating to be playing at the loudest possible volume and still hearing quite nothing. My first player was able to play 3 times louder than this ad have a fabulous bass bost. Actually there are some bass boost options for the d-ne900 but these reduce the volume mightily.

The jukebox program that comes within also sucks. It burns only atrac files which suck. there is no way to import the atrac files that it has created on a cd and in a third world country it is impossible to download the 30+Mb update. Just stick to Mp3. Saying all the faults in this player would take a whole day to read so let's stop here.

Well the good points are: long life battery, fast charging, good remote control, lighweight, small,mp3.

But still, Never Ever buy this product. Yup, it will be about 150$ down the drain.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2005-02-06

This is actually my 3rd CD Player and it's great, is expensive, but all good things in life are... so in conclusion this CD PLAYER works great, the rechargable battery is also very powerful and even powerful if you use the back up battery case that comes with it (1 AA battery) the display provided is big, and the desgin is fabulous. The only I found bad in this CD PLAYER is that when you burn a MP3 CD and you played when you see the display you might notice that some of the song titles are not completely displayed that's becuase the name of the song is too long. And that problem never appeared when i had my old SONY ATRACC 3 CD PLAYER

4 out of 5 stars someone who doesn't like distortion.......2006-01-07

It is a decent player, and I like having TV/weather capabilities. Coding presets is handy, but not obvious to set up. Read directions--then it's a snap.

A good set of headphones purchased individually really boosts the sound in this unit. (Koss Porta-Pro's offer great sound for the money; I do research prices, and I found the best price at Amazon)

Antenna (headphone cord) has to be held straight to get decent reception too much of my time when at my desk typing or using in a sports activity. I found this true regardless of headphones used--the ones that came with the unit or my Koss phones.

It does skip on burned CDs frequently. A clean, newly burned CD went right into the unit. It skipped. --being dirty or carelessly handled wasn't the issue in my circumstance.

I wanted to give it 3 stars because for me, if I can't listen to the radio when jostling on bumpy roads or sitting indoors at my desk, (which makes the reception fuzz in and out), and... I can't gear the music to my workout or mood with burned CDs, it isn't the best product out there. However, I couldn't make it 3 stars in all fairness, because the features and the player itself are still better than average if you don't need it for what I want it for.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2005-07-30

This is a great CD player. If you turn it upside down or shake it it dosent effect your cd at all. Its a great CD player and if your looking for one this is it.

2 out of 5 stars Dont waist your money.......2005-06-14

It sucks it doesnt read some of my Burned CD'S and skips when its supposed to have G-Protection And a Walkman.

4 out of 5 stars A sleek little machine........2005-05-21

I love my neat little red cd player. I've had it for over a year, and it has served me well in that time. It has superb sound quality, insanely long battery life, and it's very sleek. However, I now have to seek a replacement, as a two 1/2 foot trip to the floor seems to have destroyed it; it will play discs, but it will pause and skip every second or so, and it makes hideous noises when it starts to spin the discs. My only complaints about it are:

I hate those wrap around headphones
It wouldn't play most of my burned cds (I only have a few, and most of them refuse to work in this, while my old crappy cd player worked fine with them)
Such a fall should not have ruined it. Durability is a must for portable items such as this.

3 out of 5 stars Great Little Player.......2005-05-15

A couple years ago I got this great little player. It worked great! The sound quality is amazing. It runs on 2 AA batteries that take a long time to run out of juice. Why I gave it 3 stars was becuase after a few years, it started to skip. Sometimes you would have a long pause in the middle of a song. I thought this was the CD, but when I but it in another CD player it worked just fine. My other complaint is that it is pretty heavy. It also would have been nice if they put a belt clip on it. Anyways, this is a great portable CD player for just listening while traveling etc. (Just don't use it when playing sports or working out. I almost broke mine from that.)

A PSYC-styled clip-on remote makes it easy to operate the player while you're on the go, and Sony's "h.ear" clip-on headphones are designed for streamlined comfort.

The D-EJ100PS's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle.

4 out of 5 stars Cheap, decent.......2007-04-29

This nicely styled CD player has good sound and an attractive feature set that should make it appealing to non-audiophiles. Its inferface isn't as simple as some other players, but a short amount of study should provide a solid feel for its feature set. Perhaps best of all is its rock-solid reliability, which should make it usable for years of use - though this type of player isn't meant for hardy use. Ours still gets listened to - even well into the era of iPods.

5 out of 5 stars so i actually listen to cds........2007-04-01

okay, so i got this cd player like over 3 years ago or something like that. so i come on this site to find a replacement one because i practically killed mine. and when im looking at cd players, i come across my old one. well i love the design, and i was going to get it, but when i look at the price, it says "$75 for used or new". USED!? when i got mine when cd players were still popular, it cost $25! AND IT WAS NEW! and now it says $75? no. even though this was the best cd player i have ever had, that is outrageous. and since hardly anyone uses cds anymore, you would think the price for cd players would go down!
so yes. that is my opinion.
but the cd player is great and all, it works terriffic. the BEST battery life imaginable. just the beeping for pause gets a little annoying.
but $75? thats just nuts.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound and amazing battery saver!.......2006-12-09

This Psyc Walkman is just wonderful. I have been using it for over 2 years and I still use it. The sound is great (considering I am using another headphones) and even greater with the original headphones. Plus, with a pack of 6 normal batteries, you are sure it will have life for over 3 - 4 months, even more. Trust me, I use it for over an hour everyday!

Both thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars good player.......2005-10-05

This cd player looks cool and sounds great. I've had it for 9 months and it works like new, so reliability isn't a problem. I got mine for 45 dollars from a retail store. The only thing I don't like is it puroposely makes a beaping sound when paused, but I'm giving it 5 stars because this is just overkill rather than a manufacturing problem. Also, doesn't play mp3 cds, but it didn't say it did.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Player is GREAT!!!!!.......2005-05-11

When I bought this CD Player, it was my first, and it didn't dissapoint me. The sound quality kicks ass and it has nice looks. The remote can be a little touchy if u put it where it can hit against something, but you can always put the hold on. All in all, it's a great buy!

3 out of 5 stars Great Walkman, Poor Build Quality.......2005-08-08

I got the Sony D-NE500 Walkman for my birthday last year based on my past experiences with Sony products. As a matter of fact, I had only owned one other Sony CD Walkman before I got this one, which lived through four years of being battered and abused in my school bags and lockers. So, as you can imagine, I had very high hopes for one of Sony's best Walkmans available when I got it. Initially, I was impressed with the D-NE500. With it's several sound settings and crystal clear sound, I decided that, after only an hour or so of ownership, that this was the way music was supposed to sound.
The first six months of listening to music on my D-NE500 were excellent. Not only was listening to ot a pleasure, but so was just looking at it. This is one of the coolest looking pieces of electronic goodness available for less than $150. Based on the first six months of ownership, the Sony D-NE500 gets five stars, but after the first six months, things went wrong.
The first thing to go wrong was completely unexpected. One day after school I was listening to it on the bus when I adjusted the volume. I looked down to see if the volume was just right on the screen, but saw nothing at all. I sat there in awe of what had just happened: My $110 Walkman's screen had just quit working. This of course didn't effect the sound quality, but Walkman use depends heavily on being able to see the screen. Soon after the screen quit working, more things began to go wrong. On several occasions on which I attempted to skip a song, the volume turned up. Basically, everything electronically controlled except the laser and motor that turns the CD is messed up. When I spend $110 on something, I don't expect to have it rendered useless by electronic failure less than a year after I purchase it. This seems to be a rare problem, however. Looking at the rest of the reviews here, it seems that nobody else experiences the problems I did. Maybe I just got a defective unit, but it should still work perfectly after only eleven months of ownership.
The quality of sound the Sony D-NE500 Walkman provides is enough to earn it five stars, but the defective build quality gets it a three out of five.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product.......2005-06-29

I bought this model mainly for its customizable equalizer, which allows you to boost or reduce one of three frequency bands in low, mid and high frequency ranges. This is a great feature, if you like to listen with different high-quality headphones to various types of recordings, particularly MP3's, which benefit from these kinds of adjustments, depending upon the type of music and the recording production quality.

I use this product to play mostly MP3 files, which it does very well, without any hint of skipping at the minimum skip protection setting. However, if you record lengthy files, with several songs within each file, the fast forward feature moves very slowly through each song. The single AA batteries last for several weeks, and the remote control even has its own "hold" button.

While this unit is about twice as much as most MP3 CD players, it has great features and is worth the money if you are using quality headphones, particularly the over-the-ear type, which block outside noise and enhance sound detail.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of excellence.......2005-02-10

I have gone through more than six CD players of all kinds throughout my life, and this CD Player is quite possibly the best one I have ever owned. Of course, many people know that when they see a product with the Sony label on it, it is usually guaranteed to be a lasting and high-quality product. The D-NE500 MP3/CD Player continues that trend of excellence while creating a revolution of futuristically-styled products to keep up with our fast paced world.

The one key feature about this CD player is its battery life. Most CD players require 2 "AA" batteries, and some thinner, more versatile CD players use "gumstick" reacting batteries. However, the D-NE500 is quite different from most of these CD players with the fact that it only requires 1 AA battery to operate! This eliminates the hassle of buying bulk sets of batteries and constantly changing and confusing batteries just to listen to a couple of hours of music. Furthermore, the D-NE500 maxes out at 35 hours of battery life in MP3/ATRAC3 operation and 17 hours of CD-Audio operation! I have personally challenged this statement and this CD player can continuously play for days on end without running short on battery (I was able to count about one and a half days of continuous play). For a mid-range CD player, this is a very impressive quality that should not be overlooked.

Another great quality about the CD player is, of course, the sound quality. Sony CD players never fall short of excellent in sound quality, and the D-NE500 is by far no exception to this. This CD player has integrated Digital Mega Bass to enhance low-range sounds while keeping mid and high-range sounds uneffected, and it also has Auto Volume Levelling, which can compute the appropriate increase and decrease of volume during song play. This truely enhanced the fidelity and precision of the music, and it prevents distortion. However, the real selling point of this CD player is that it includes a parametric equalizer to custom-tune the sound the way YOU want. While on most CD players, this feature is not a great help to assist overall sound quality, the D-NE500 actually has good preset settings and easy-to-use adjustment controls.

The size of the CD player is somewhat thick, but thick enough to fit in one's pocket fairly easily. The 4-line LCD on the front of the CD player is extremely user-friendly, and coupled with the "iPod like" circle and joystick controls, it is definitely dummy-proof. The player allows you to view ID3 tags, folders, and the bitrate and sampling rate of a playing song. It is not backlit, but that is solved by a small, but nonetheless useful remote.

Also, don't forget about the one-of-a-kind G-Protection that it provides for MP3 CDs and regular CDs. It truely does not skip, even when running under heavy conditions.

The front does look very plastic-like, but it is definitely nothing cheap.

All-in-all, the D-NE500 exceeds the quality of a CD player of a similar price tag. It is definitely worth having in your home. I recommend using Sony Fontopia or Sony CD series headphones as well, even though the stock headphones are alright.

5 out of 5 stars Great little MP3 player.......2005-01-07

I've probably gone through 2 or 3 CD/MP3 players - most of which were the cheaper RCA players (all of them flaked out and were a frustrating experience to operate). I picked up this Sony at the local discount superstore with a Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter (read my review on that also) as a gift. These two units work very well together (especially when using the Sony remote cord which acts as an antenna for the Belkin TuneCast II).

What I like about best about the Sony is that it works - and it works well. It doesn't skip, hang, or take a long time to figure out what is on an MP3 CD. It takes a little bit of time getting used to how to access the menu mode with the little 'joystick' button and the scroll wheel. After glancing over the manual, I had it all figured out.

I do not plan on using the ATRAC3 format (tempting, but I prefer a non-proprietary format) - nor do I need AM/FM/WB/TV in a CD/MP3 player - this unit will be used primarily for listening to MP3's while traveling in the car.

How well does this unit work? Well- if I stop the unit and it turns off - when I turn it back on and press play, it picks up where I left off. That shows a little bit of intelligence in design. It takes a split second to jump from one track to the next (no hang time trying to relocate the beginning of the track). It doesn't hang half way through a track either (the RCA models would act like a record player stuck on a scratch - at which point I had to fast forward through the track or jump to the next track - or turn the unit off and on).

The best part of this unit? It runs on 1 AA battery. I figure if I used it for only 3-4 hours a week while traveling in the car, I might get 10 weeks out of a single AA battery!

Yes - it is pricey, but this unit is worth it. Having gone through 2-3 RCA's in the last couple years, I wish I would have had this one to start with.
