Panasonic Car/Portable CD Player

Product Description
Product Description:
The SL-S261C player ups the Anti-Shock ante with ASM II. This enhanced chip set corrects horizontal shocks (those that occur in the plane of disc rotation), which cause the disc to momentarily spin faster or slower. This frees up the full capacity of the memory buffer to deal with tracking errors caused by vertical shocks. Memory capacity for this model is 10 seconds of music, so playback should continue smoothly in the most adverse conditions. The player will deliver up to 25 hours of playback on two AA alkaline batteries. There's no longer a need to be stingy with either the number of discs you bring along or the use of ASM II.Intended for the car as well as portable use, the SL-S261C comes with a DC power cord and a cassette adaptor, which lets users channel CD music through their car's audio system. Emphasizing its utility in the car, this model also features a backlit LCD for easy visibility in the dark, and a heat resistant polycarbonate body.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic SLSX282C portable CD player has been designed to virtually eliminate skipping under normal listening conditions. It's been given a thin, lightweight, traverse mechanism to minimize the influence of outside vibrations and a floating rubber construction to further help absorb vibrations. However, if a shock does occur, the 40-second backup memory will kick in, and your music will continue to play as if nothing happened. This gives you near-perfect, skip-free listening.

Other conveniences include playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs, programming options (random, repeat of track or entire disc), and S-XBS (Extra Bass System) to give your music a bass boost for an exciting, full sound. And, with its heat-resistant polycarbonate body, you can use your portable CD player outdoors without having to worry about causing damage to it.

The Panasonic SLSX282C comes with headphones that give you amazing stereo sound and bring out the most in your music, as well as a wireless remote control, a car power adapter, and car cassette adapter.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent player, though display blanks out if left outside in freezing temps.......2006-10-05

I have had mine for 4 years now, almost always in my car with the cassette adapter kit. It runs fine and sounds great. The remote even still works with the original batteries.

The only 'problem' I have had is that in Wisconsin winters the temperature gets below freezing often, which wrecks the LCD display. So I haven't been able to read the track number, but I don't really care since I'm usually driving. The LCD not working after freezing is normal for LCD displays and is not a fault of the player, just a result of the conditions it is used in. I can still access all the features fine.

I cannot say enough how impressed I am with the anti-skip feature. Hold it in your hand and shake it vigorously and it will not skip while playing! And most of the time it is resting on hard plastic in my car. The only time it skips is when I'm driving over washboard gravel roads.

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!.......2003-02-21

I recommend this Cd Player for you to own. Because there are like.....no cons! And alot of pros! nah, not a piece of junk. Very Very good skip protection! You hit it on the wall, the music still plays without skipping! It is rugged, i've dropped it like 5 times and it works like a charm! I think the volume is pretty loud, (cuz i am hard of hearing, so I don't know if it is loud enough for you guys yeaaaa it's loud) It plays mP3's. Also you know how when sumtimes your friend's cd player is playing in their backback? That's because "it" pushed the play button, well this won't happend to this because after your done, on the side, there is a switch and you slide it over to the "hold" button, now it wont play and you don't have mto worry about your cd player being played when your not knowing it. Up to 28 hours playback with 2 AA batterites. I highly recommend this cd player to ANYONE!!!

1 out of 5 stars Was great at first...but soon couldn't play cd-r's.......2002-11-25

I admit this cd player was great and worth its money at first, lightweight, cool-looking, and it didn't skip. But what I didn't know is that after 3 weeks, when I played my CD-R's I discovered that after about Track 5 it would play fuzzy and scratchy, basically not listenable. Well it was alright as long as I could play Regular cd's, but it was a pain. Ah but months later, I went to play a regualar cd, and it wouldn't play, It said "NO DISK" when there actually was a disk in there. It is now disabled and worthless. I suggest you try something else.

1 out of 5 stars High Infant Mortality Rate.......2002-07-02

Dont' waste your money. I bought this model after the previous model's anti-skip died two weeks after the warranty expired. I've had this about 8 months and it will not longer work with batteries, only external power. If I could give it zero stars I would. Two in a row is enough to convince me Panasonic makes junk and I'll never buy a Panasonic item again!

4 out of 5 stars Great Job Panasonic!!!.......2001-12-17

I have had this item for a few days now and I love it. It does not skip at all and I have hit a lot of bumps to and from my locations. The only problem I have having is that the cassette is sounding scratchy. I cleaned the cassette player and put in another cassette - this cassette did not sound scratchy, but the cassette used to play this item in my car is scratchy. It is a good product other than that. Maybe I need to turn the volume down. :-)

5 out of 5 stars takes a beating and keeps on playing.......2003-08-13

When I started looking for a portable CD player, I was inclined to look at sony's line. I've had many sony systems before, and they've always been good. But I read a review somewhere that said that panasonics were really much better for portable systems and they're usually cheaper. So I compared a few and picked this one. I've had it for almost three years now, and I am still impressed. It's been through a lot, including almost nine months of daily use since I moved to a city where my commute involves the subway. I used to use it in my car constantly, and never had a problem. For at least a year, it was my primary stero system, hooked up to some speakers and a subwoofer -- still got great sound. If you're looking for a sturdy, multi-purpose portable system, I highly recommend this. I once dropped it while riding my bike, dragged it behind me for fifteen feet and the thing never skipped OR STOPPED PLAYING! It's got some scratches now, but it still works perfectly.

For the record, I will tell you the few flaws I think the system has: 1) while it has a hold function to keep you from accidentally hitting buttons or anything when it's in your backpack or bag (which I use daily and it works great), the actual lid of the player doesn't lock and i have found that it occasionally opens itself up by rubbing up against something in my bag. 2) it works great in a car, EXCEPT that when you turn the car on and off, it resets the disc and doesn't pick up where it left off, which some newer, car-designed systems do. but it does have a resume function where it will pick up on the last song that it was playing, not rest back to track 1.

All in all, a great system for a good price.

      1 out of 5 stars bad.......2002-05-19

When I first bought this product it was great. But after 6months i dropped it from about 1 foot up on a hardwood floor and it shattered. So besides the fact that it is unreliable and cheaply made it it a mediocre player. I then bought a different player ( Sony walkman w/ AM-Fm radio 70$ at amazon) and was amazed that it costed 10$ less.

      I am dissapointed with Panasonic

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Player.......2000-06-08

I bought a portable CD player 8 years ago, but stopped using it because it wasn't really portable. The Music would skip at the slightest vibration. The 40 second anti-shock memory solves this problem. You can shake this and shake it and it never skips at all. I take it everywhere. It fits into most of my larger pockets, but works best in a fanny pack. The one problem I have had is this occasionally pops open if the latch is nudged too hard. I would not recommend you carry this in a crowded backpack--the top might pop open and you'd lose your CD. But for everyday use, this is just what I wanted!

      2 out of 5 stars Not 4 the Car.......2000-06-07

I bought this with the primary intention of in car use. I was worried when I read the car kit instructions and it was noted that a "rotating sound" was "normal" with use of the car adapter. I have listened to other people's car adapted CD players and never heard such a thing; but as soon as I set mine up in the car I heard the rotating NOISE! Worse yet, the music volume was about a 1 or 2 on a ten scale. Had cleaned the cassette heads on the car and followed the instructions and still it sounded SO BAD that I was so frustrated I really wanted to through it out the window while doing 55. The only reason I can give it 2 stars is that I then tried it with batteries and the headphones and it worked. It didn't sound spectacular but it sounded good enough that I would use it if I wanted to walk around and listen to CD's.

      Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic SL-SX451C personal CD player comes with everything you need to listen to music through your car's built-in cassette stereo. Outfitted with a power adapter that plugs into your cigarette lighter and a cassette adapter for the deck itself--along with a pair of stereo headphones for non-vehicle use--the car kit is a good option for people who own older car stereos and don't want to upgrade to more-expensive units. As a further enticement, the CD player isn't restricted to CDs only, as it also plays MP3s burned onto a CD-R/RW disc. The expanded playback options give listeners access to far more of their digital music libraries, while also cutting down on the number of CDs they need to bring along during road trips (the average CD-R holds 10 hours of MP3 music).

Audio-wise, the CD player boasts digital MP3 remastering, which restores most of the fidelity that's lost during the MP3 compression process. The resulting sound is richer and deeper, without the shallow, tinny tones so common to unaltered MP3 songs. The sound is further enriched by the player's S-XBS and S-XBS+ bass boost equalizer settings, along with the Live setting, which delivers concert-hall-like audio. Another audio bonus stems from the CD player's anti-skip system, which reduces or eliminates interruptions whether you're jogging, driving, or simply walking across the room.

The SL-SX451C's playback functions include skip/search controls, random and repeat (one and all) play, and a 20-track programming mode. And even when you're not in the car and can't use the cigarette lighter power adapter, the CD player still offers impressive playback times on a single pair of AA batteries (50 hours for CDs and 85 hours for MP3s). Listeners can further boost the playback times by using rechargeable batteries.

      The SL-SX451C, which measures 5.31 by 0.94 by 5.31 inches (W x H x D), comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

      What's in the Box
CD player, stereo headphones, cigarette lighter adapter, cassette adapter, user's manual.

Very pleased with this item. It seems to eat up batteries but since I got it to plug into my truck this isn't too much of a concern. I find the sound is good (of course that relies a lot on my speakers) and I think it is very good value for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Not the adapter received, but the updated one.......2006-02-21

I purchased this adapter (RP-AK45) from Beach Audio, but received a different adapter, SH-CDC12pey. According to the Panasonic web site, this is the replacement for the SH-CDC6, which works for my Panasonic CD player. RP-AK45 is supposed to be for all Panasonic portable CD players. Product Description

Panasonic is proud to introduce its SL-S361C - portable CD Player with stylish and compact design. It is built with 40-second Anti-Shock Memory II for virtually endless non-skip entertainment. This CD player has a heat-resistant polycarbonate body, pop-up disc eject system, one-push full open top cover, MASH, 1-bit D/A conversion system, S-XBS (Super Extra Bass System), 24-track random access programming and backlit LCD. The efficiency rating means you get up to 25 hours of continuous playback with 2 AA batteries (Anti-Shock Memory on). Car Power Adapter and Car Cassette Adapter are also provided.

      Amazon.com Review

The Panasonic SL-S361C is a versatile, value-packed choice for consumers who are seeking a moderate-priced player that functions as both a portable CD unit and an in-car CD player. While the sound quality is crisp and clear, this player also has several impressive features that could easily go unnoticed at first glance.

One such feature is the automatic backlighting on the LED screen when you connect the unit to an external power source. When you are running the SL-S361C on batteries, this feature is disabled to extend battery life.

The Panasonic SL-S361C also uses anti-skip technology, which pre-scans your music 40 seconds before you hear it to ensure smooth playback. Panasonic gives you the option of turning the anti-skip feature on or off, which is useful since the technology uses slightly more battery power. These battery-saving features are a plus, but the Panasonic SL-S361C can operate up to a lengthy 25 hours on 2 AA alkaline batteries.

Besides the extras, Panasonic's SL-S361C includes all the essential CD features, including repeat track, CD pause, 24-track programmability, and random play. For deeper bass performance, there is an optional Super Extra Bass System (XBS). The Panasonic SL-S361C also comes with stereo headphones, an AC adapter, a car cassette adapter, and a DC (cigarette lighter) cord.

4 out of 5 stars excellent for car.......2000-08-16

I bought this cd player the day I got my liscense. It has lasted me and has never skipped when it was on anti-shock. I listen to a lot of MP3s converted to Wave and it reads them like any other cd. I recomend this if you dont want to spend [the money] on installation for a new cd player receiver for your car.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Tracking ability........2000-08-11

This was a replacement for a Jensen CD-Portable I had. The Jensen never skipped once and it went through 5 months of constant shock therapy (I used it to work out). Unfortunately due to leaving the unit in my car on a 100 degree day (130 degrees in my car), it melted the top.

So I bought this (without the car kit) because I thought since my Jensen had 40 second anti-skip, that this would be the same. It was not.

Listening to alot of converted MP3 files (to WAV), it would have problems reading them to the point I could not get through one song without it freezing. Even when playing the regular CD's it would skip once in a while. Not good for 40 second anti-skip.

The sound is worse as well. It is obvious that Panasonic uses the worst op-amps in the industry because the output is low and without high-efficiency headphones, you just don't get alot of volume. The volume you do get is grainy and the soundstage was worse than my Jensen, even a Kenwood unit I had for 3 years before that. Strange because Technics (Panasonics sister company) makes some good CD players with their MASH D/A converters.

I recommend that you stay away from this model and invest 10 more dollars on a Sony or a Jensen (if you can find it).

      4 out of 5 stars mistake.......2000-02-06

sorry i meant to say i use the Sony WITHOUT ESP on. It doesn't need ESP on. ESP just adds some background noise.

4 out of 5 stars Panasonics are good, but have some flaws, Sony's are good 2.......2000-02-01

I have some things to say in reply to the last review. Some are in some defence of Sony, and some are about my experience with cd-r's, car kits, and accessories. I have a Sony D-E446CK, and a Panasonic SL-S200. The Sony plays all cd-r's perfectly with no trouble at all. I have one cd-r that has trouble with the Panasonic. It will cut out in between songs if the anti shock is turned on. The Sony plays it fine, however cd-rw's work in the Panasonic and not in the Sony. I have used Kenwood and Sony car adaptors and never had trouble with either of them in our 98 Plymouth Breeze tapedeck. Panasonics are better in some ways but not others. Battery life is better but they dont have a battery level indicator, jsut a flashing light. Panasonics earphones are total crap, the earbuds that came with my Sony were only part crap, but they had good bass, and no distortion. They got hit by a train thanks to my friend (long story) I agree the pop up disc eject is nice on panasonics, but if you know how to pull a cd out of a discman u wont have any trouble. You have to put thumb on spinner thingy, and right hand finger on the right edge of the cd and lightly pull on the edge of the cd. Then it will pop off easily and can be picked up. Do not rip it off the spindle from both ends of the cd! this is probably how some people have broken the spindle on some Sony's. Now, about skip protection. I have not used the 40 second panasonics in real life, i have only tried them in little stand still shake tests. Panasonics skip very easily if the anti skip is turned off. I use my Sony all the time with the ESP turned on and it doesn't skip even while im walking with it in my jacket pocket, or listening to it on the back seat of the bus on our very bumpy! country roads. Panasonics and Kenwoods will almost not play at all under these conditions if the anti skip is off. I never use ESP cause it makes sound quality get a little bit worse, but i can't even walk with a Panasonic in my hand without it skipping. With 40 second anti skip i imagine the newer Panasonics are probably a bit better than my Sony if the anti skip is turned on. If i had the Sony D-E456CK however, it has 40 second ESP and a backlit display (like the Panasonic in this review) and a remote, then it would probably be better. So far its only gotten 5 star reviews here on Amazon.com. Just thought i'd mention some things, hope its not too messy i wrote it fast and put things down as i thought of them.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Performance!.......2000-01-27

This product is absolutely great, especially if you burn your own CD's. A lot of portable CD players often skip and go crazy when you play burned CD's, especially most Sony portable CD players often give incredibly depressing performance with regards to this issue, so try to avoid buying Sony if the music you'll listen to will come from CD-R's. But, for optimal sound, don't forget to use top-of-the-line CD-R's. I had this player (w/ the remote) for a couple of months now and it hasn't even skipped once, even with frequent and heavy use. That's incredible performance! I also like the bright green backlit display when you plug in the AC adaptor, and, well I haven't really tried it in my car since I already have a CD player that came from the manufacturer. To make a long story short, some of the people who gave this product a bad review probably got a lemon or just don't know how to use it. There are a lot of variables with respect to cassette adaptors in the car. Sometimes it may work hassle-free while sometimes it may not work so well. Therefore, the best thing to do is that if you're thinking about buying a new car, buy one w/ its own manufacturer CD player just to avoid such a conflict. Overall, the sound quality is spectacular, especially the xtra bass system, which is deeper than Sony's Digital Mega Bass, but slightly less than Sony's Groove (in other words, it's a perfect bass setting). There are also a lot of other options, such as the pop-up button to eject the disc from the plate (a feature that most Sony players DON'T have and it helps prevent the disc from being bent endlessly), Resume function, Hold Position function, heat-resistant polycarbonate body, battery status indicator (just like the one on a cell phone), and a whole lot of other stuff. I also like the fact that the player is made in Japan, so you know that you're getting pretty good labor and material quality. Headphones could use some improvement, though. To summarize, you're getting a pretty good deal w/ this player, so just buy it while it lasts!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Long Road Trips.......2000-07-18

We purchased the Panasonic SL-S362C Portable with Remote because we were headed on a 2,000 mile trip with our family of six and we can never find appropriate radio stations as we travel. We had read other reviews and weren't sure we needed the remote, but liked the price. The remote was a life saver. We velcroed it to the dashboard within both driver and passenger reach and put the player behind the 4WD shifter on the floor. The only time we had to reach for the player was to change the CD. We found the player very durable considering the jostling around stuff that you get when taking supplies to munch, read etc on a long trip like that. Also, the player is not very sensitive at all. We drove a couple of times for hours in our 4WD older style Suburban before we even realized the anti-shock wasn't on. The first time was on the back roads where we lived, that are know for twists, turns and bumps. We have never purchased a portable CD player before, and it looks like we won't have to again for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Buy.......2000-07-13

You get a durable, very ergonomic CD player. The display illuminates when an external DC source is plugged in. A car adapter kit and a wireless infrared remote control are included. Sound wise, the only portable CD players which can top it are the more expensive, less ergonomic 460/470/850 models. However, you're trading all those goodies for a higher price and just slightly more focus in the bass. I recommend buying one of these Panasonics, an external rechargeable jewel-case-shaped CD Battery..., a CD Washer carrying case..., and some better headphones (most portable CD players come bundled with lousy ones). I think you'll be very pleased with the results.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic SL-S362C Portable CD Player.......2000-07-08

I have owned this CD player for about two weeks now and have not experienced any of the problems mentioned by the others... I bought the CD player with a little caution flag and as soon as I got it tested it out. Battery life is excelent, actually better if the anti-skip feature is turned on. I do a lot of off-roading (Rocky Mtns. and all) and it hasn't skipped once. I do make many of my own compilation CDs and have not had any trouble with CD-RWs or CD-Rs. The remote works fine but it's not realy necessary (half the time you're holding the player in your hand anyway so it's just a gimick for the gadget adicts like me). The one thing I have noticed is the player's poor tollerance of scratched CDs, but then again CDs need to be taken care of so it's not Panasonic's fault. As for sound quality, Panasonic's supplied headphones leave much to be desired in terms of music clarity, but replace those with a high quality pair from Sony or Koss and the improvement is mind-boggling.

This is definitely the best portable CD player I have ever bought and Amazon gave me an excelent deal. If you love high-quality music on the go, definitely take this Panasonic into consideration.

3 out of 5 stars Looks nice, plays well, but it's delicate.......2000-05-26

The SL-360x series is animprovement over past Panasonic models.

Briefly, here are the strong points. The player has good looks and usability. It's slim, and the buttons have never faulted me, although they could be accidentally pressed if you keep the player in a backpack or a suitcase. The anti-shock memory (40 sec) works well even when driving off-road. The sound quality is average (you don't buy such players to enjoy the nuances of a Debussy prelude anyway). The nicest feature of the player is that batteries last much longer than any player I've had before, I would say in the 15-20 hours range.

And now the bad points: the silver fit-and-finish is very delicate, so it will age quickly as you use it. Most important, when playing long CDs (70+ minutes), the laser head loses the CD trace, and a "sorry" appears on the screen. Which reveals two things about electronic appliances: i) they are not infallible; ii) they can experience a sense of guilt.

Finally, I'd recommend the Panasonic, but only to very careful users who don't expect absolute reliability from it.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid player.......2000-05-01

This player is an excellent performer with its anti-shock and extra bass options. Unfortunately, unlike its predecessors it offers little physical shock resistance, so you have to leave the anti-shock on or it'll skip when you set it down.

It plays CD-R discs with no problem but has a strange quirk with CD-RW audio discs; it will play them 3 or 4 times but after that won't recognize them. Erasing and re-recording the disc does make it go away, but it's not worth it.

The battery life is excellent, even with the anti-shock on. One feature from older Panasonics that I miss is the ability to quickly pull the AC/DC adapter out of the back of the unit while it was playing. The old ones switched to battery; this one shuts off.

Don't buy this unit for the remote; wireless remotes on portable CD players are not worth extra money. Unlike wired ones, they get lost easily and must be pointed at the unit.

The tape adapter works just fine and the AC and DC adapters run very cool . . .

Panasonic's vision of the digital future is driven by the needs and aspirations of its business customers and millions of consumers around the world who use its products every day. The company shares their dream to live a fuller life by providing ways of working smarter and enjoying the rewards of technological advances.

      Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic SL-SX291C portable CD player was made for active use, incorporating not only Panasonic's "No Skip" anti-skip system but a handy car kit that lets you power the device from your vehicle's cigarette lighter and listen through your cassette deck using a cassette-shaped audio adapter.

"No Skip" construction was designed with rubber bushings to absorb the shock, while a thin and light anti-skip mechanism and anti-skip digital servo system add to the defense. It also boasts a digital-servo recovery system that can detect even a fractional difference in the CD's tracking and quickly recovers before it has a chance to "derail."

The system is bolstered by an improved set of error correction chips together with a 40-second backup memory buffer. When a vertical shock (along the axis of the disc) causes a tracking error, the system plays back music from the memory buffer until correct tracking resumes.

Since the SL-SX291C enables playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs, you can enjoy listening to CDs that you make in addition to conventional audio CDs. This unit also features programmable playback (up to 24 tracks, in your chosen sequence), random play, repeat play (either one song or an entire disc), as well as S-XBS bass boost and Train mode (which cuts high frequencies for less externally audible or less fatiguing sound). The player includes a "pop-up" disc eject mechanism for easy disc removal.

The CD player uses two AA batteries (not included), which last up to 35 hours. You can also power the unit with an optional 4.5V AC/DC adapter, which lets you plug your portable CD player into an outlet.

With a heat-resistant polycarbonate body, the SL-SX291C can be used in most outdoor settings without worry of damage. However, the unit should not be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

      What's in the Box
CD player, stereo headphones, a cassette-shell audio adapter, a vehicle DC power supply, and a user's manual.

      5 out of 5 stars For the price...fairly amazing.......2003-03-10

The unit I have may perhaps be the predecessor (SL-SX282C). Its look and features are identical. I must give praise to this unit! For the price, it has functioned incredible for me. I have abused mine horribly, dropping it on tile, gravel, concrete about 6 times now. I thought the poor thing had given up the ghost finally on the sixth time...upon examination, the spindle was bent so badly the cd was moving over an 1/8" inch up and down.....and the unit still attempted to play!! I applied judicious pressure with a ball point pen..and its working again..hehheh. The buttons are easy to use and have a positive click. It has a a lockout slider so the buttons aren't pressed by mistake. The 40-second skip feature really is skip free. The battery consumption seems to be better than advertised. The remote is a nice feature for car use, although kind of redundant for handheld use....but its fun to play with. Careful with the battery compartment lid...its kinda flimsy..but it stays attached, which is nice. The spring loaded top also is a bit delicate, but opens nicely with a slider in front....nice touch. As for the sound....just leave it on "x-bs" mode...best highs and lows. Mine also has a weird mode called "train", which cuts the highs a bit. Replace the lame sounding supplied headphones with a nice pair of Sony earbuds and it becomes studio quality (tip- when looking for headphones, look at the "specs" section....pay attention to the frequency range...get the lowest in MHZ (megahertz) that you can....my Sony earbuds go down to 13 mhz...it helps the x-bass feature immensely...this is key to good sound in headphones) If you're looking for tight, crisp, bass heavy sound on a budget...Its a great setup. Just don't drop it *7* times...lol :D

5 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2003-01-11

I've had this CD player since Christmas now, and so far it's been everything a good CD player should be. It's even got some small and unnecessary add-ons that just make playing with it even more fun. The lid lifts up pretty far, and in addition to that, the front button to open it works so that you don't even have to pull it open with your fingers - it opens automatically all the way. Other players might do this, but my old one didn't and was a cheap GPX from '98 that wasn't very good. For the record, by the way, I wouldn't recommend any GPX. This CD player also has another nice feature - the battery door is attached by a hinge, so you don't have to worry about taking it off to replace the batteries and possibly losing it (as I did with my old one). The buttons on the top are easy to use and self-explanatory, and so far it hasn't skipped at all - which was the main concern. My old one got to the point where you had to press play for 15 minutes before anything actually happened, and if you moved it ever so slightly while loading the 10 second anti-skip, it would skip repeatedly for the entirety of the CD and not stop until you turned it off and started all over - a HUGE problem since I mainly used it on train and car rides. Anyway, this player is nice, my mother picked it out (pretty good considering the only thing I said it needed to have was color). I haven't dropped it yet, but it held up well on my latest train and car rides. Overall, nicely funtional and pretty too.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic SL-SX3221C Disc Man with Car Kit.......2004-05-02

This Disc Man is cool, cute and very durable. I bouth it for my 4 weeks of trip to Australia and Cambodia. It still is in good condition.

This Disc Man will come to you with:

      Flexible Airphones
      Disc Man
      Car kit

This is an OK Disc Man. It has good features and takes only 2 batteries. I love the shape of this Disc Man. It tells you the duration of your songs and how may tracks that the CD you put in have. My little cousins in Australia just love it. The blue circle is just beautiful.

The coolest thing is that it "remembers" the track that you are listening to. So when you turn it OFF and then ON again it will be at the place that you have left. For example if you are listening to your "Beyond Pink" CD, if you are in song #9 and you turn your Disc Man OFF and On it will return at #9 instead of restart the CD at the bigginning.

So buy this cool-kicking Disc Man and you would not regrate it!!

      Lots Of Love,
      Fulliem XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

4 out of 5 stars Works fine. Lasts a long time........2003-12-20

High serviceability to cost ratio. I used one in the car on a 2800 mile road trip and in rooms with portable speakers and was impressed with the product's quality.

Pros: Good sound quality; no skipping; plays my CD-R media; simple, ergonomically correct, controls; comes with car kit and headphones; 'hold' switch to disable buttons during play-back

Cons: Must reset volume whenever power is removed and reapplied

1 out of 5 stars useless for commuting.......2003-08-22

i bought this so i could listen to foreign language instruction while driving to work. my car has only a radio, so i use the portable cd player with headphones. with the volume at maximum, i still can't hear the conversations, even with all my windows rolled up.

in my wife's car, which has a cassette player, i used it with the car kit to listen to music on a trip to the velodrome in trexlertown. i had to turn the cassette player's volume way up to hear pink floyd's first album... some loud, raucous stuff which i should be able to hear clearly at regular volume.

in summation, don't buy this unless you plan to use it while reclining in a soundproof room. it's pretty much useless for any other application. a total waste of my money.

      1 out of 5 stars Go For A Sony.......2003-08-07

I've bought about 10 portable players since the late 90's
sometimes Sony being good and other times Panasonic. However
I've always used Sony Car Kits, and when my old one went I
decided to try this Panasonic kit featured here. And I tell yah,
No darn good! I had to crank my cars volume to max to even hear
the music, and also allowed the speakers to hiss. The Way This kit is set up is that the cd player has less Milliwatts powering it, less headphone jack Milliwatt output and to top it off a tape adapter with the head distanced from full contact with the car decks head. All these poor features equal a quite cd player and no ability to crank tunes from your car. I just bought a Sony D-EJ368CK and it sure sounds great. Go for Sony!

3 out of 5 stars Sound good, low convenience.......2003-07-03

Player (made in China) Sound quality was good with headphones nice warm sound, but I do not listen to music loud and I wanted to edge it above max volume. Can use rechargeable batteries.
Car kit (Made in Indonesia) is of minimal quality, came with an "out" in the flimsy wiring so occasionally have to jiggle. Has a hiss.
Player has digital push buttons so it forgets EQ & volume settings when car or player turned off (much better than knobs guys! [Sarcasm]) Have to turn to max every time to make tape player pick up as a low volume recording (a real pain for in town driving!).
Overall disappointing, but not bad performance.
