2 out of 5 stars Strongly not recommended!.......2004-11-02

consumes a lot of battery, lasts for a maximum of 2 hours when you insert fully charged batteries in it. does not detect many MP3 cds, almost half of my MP3 CDs could not be played in this. bulky, cannot use as an MP3 walkman but good if you use standard MP3 CDs and always keep it connected to the AC outlet.

This thing has a mind of its own! one day it will work great and I would be very pleased with it but then the next day it will skip and just randomly turn off when the batteries are full. Also this thing uses batteries so fast! I think I'm either going to get a RioVolt or a TDK Mojo instead and chuck this piece.

Great machine. Very comprable to Sony RioVolt. I think it is even better. Pine was the orriginaotor of Mp3 cd players. Only down side is huge battery waste. Get one tody!

1 out of 5 stars Buyers beware.......2001-08-02

I have an old sony cd player with 1 bit DAC(which means it skips if you touch it). So I purchased this cd player to replace my "vintage" Sony. I thought it was a great deal for playing audio cds and mp3 files. When I received the package I opened it up popped in an mp3 cd and let it play. It played great and sounded good but as I held it and moved it around it started to skip. I thought the antishock was turned off but I found out there is not a way to turn it off or on for that matter. I set it down to let the antishock build up then I tapped the player and sure enough it skipped. It also did it with audio cd's.

This is not something I could carry around in my backpack and listen to music with or use it in my car it as I intended.

The only apparent advantages over my Sony was that this player could play mp3s and had a more EQ capabilities. The sony still sounds better though.

In addition to it's poor performance it was very slow in skipping to the next track. Maybe that is just a common thing with these players but I do know that this player is not worth what it is advertised as. Especially since it appears to be cheaply built. The case seem to be as cheap as one of those cheap tape players you buy for $9.99. The remote wasn't that good either. I had to press the remote buttons pretty hard to get it to work.

Within 30-45 minutes of getting the player it was boxed back up, shipping paid, and waiting to be picked up by the ups truck.

Needless to say I was not happy. I am going to just spend the money and buy the Rioport for like 160.00 from a local retailer.

I still don't understand why this player is rated as a 4 star unless I just got a bad unit.

But don't just take my word for it. I just had to put the information out there.

Have a great day!

4 out of 5 stars Pine Technology SM300T D'Music Portable MP3-CD Player Review.......2001-07-06

As a person who really interested in mp3-cd player's i will say that this is a really descent mp3-cd player, the remote is small and easy to operate, the sound is clear and good, the 6 equalizer modes proved to be really usefull, and the album selection option really adds a lot to the search, now the main problem is that there is a problem of skipping songs fast but other pluses such as great sound,6 equalizer modes, remote control and pretty large battery life really make that minus forgetable

Amazon.com Product Description

The D'Music SM200C is a portable CD player that will play MP3-encoded discs as well as regular-format CDs, CD-R, and CD-RW media. This means you can burn MP3s from your computer onto a recordable CD (software included). The SM200C supports CDs of up to 200 tracks. To make finding a specific song easier, the SM200C supports ID3 tags. ID3 tags contain a small amount of data about an MP3 file, such as title and artist name, that can be displayed by the player. So, instead of trying to remember what track number a certain song is, you can see the song title while scanning through the disk, making it much easier to find the song you want. The SM200C will automatically scan the disc to determine if it's a regular audio CD or MP3 encoded--no special settings on the player are necessary--and will support encoding bit rates of 32 to 320 Kbps.

Play features on the SM200C include repeat and random mode, or, when a song is paused, press the FF or REW keys to move forward or back 10 tracks at a time. A five-band preset equalizer lets you choose from among these listening modes: pop, jazz, classical, flat, and extra bass.

Convenient features include 10-second antishock protection, an LCD title display for easy control, and included rechargeable batteries that provide up to four hours of playing time (three hours when playing MP3 discs). The player comes with earphones, a line-out cable, an AC adapter, and MusicMatch Jukebox software for creating your own MP3 discs.

Pine Technologies, the manufacturer of the SM200C, offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The SM-200C+ is the best mp3-cd player out there!.......2002-04-11

I just bought the Pine SM-200C+ player and it's best player you can get for your money. It has 50 secs anti-shock, eq, rechargable batteries and random (features that the SM-200C is missing). I was originally going to get the Sonicblue Rio Volt 250. But after reading all the reviews of it dying just days/weeks after people ordered it, I decided on saving myself [money] and got this player instead. It has almost all the same features for half the price!

It doesn't have a back-lit display, remote & isn't upgradable, but I dont need any of that stuff anyways. The back-lit display would just drain your batteries, the buttons on the remote are too small and if a product works with no problems from the start, there is no need to upgrade the firmware.

1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere.......2001-12-16

Don't buy this unit at any price. I bought it a long time ago because it was the only one on the market at the time, and I liked the idea of playing MP3 CD-RWs. You can read other reviews and see the same complaints, but here are my chief complaints:
1. It skips horribly at the slightest provocation, anti-shock or not. This problem alone made me throw it out after I got my Sony, rather than subject someone else to this frustration.
2. Battery life (rechargable NiMH) is 2-3 hours.
3. It displays "Unknown tag" if the file has no ID3 tag. It could display the file name instead.
4. The supplied AC adapter often refuses to work for no reason.
5. The supplied earphones are horrible.
6. It's difficult to navigate through tracks. It plays files in directories but doesn't allow you to navigate directories. Everything is treated as being in one big directory.
7. Hitting "Next" while in shuffle mode actually goes to the next file sequentially, rather than picking a track randomly.
8. The user's manual is a useless short pdf.

There are better players on the market (i.e. every other player). Buy one of those. SERIOUSLY!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing to like.......2001-07-18

I bought a Philips Expanium and returned it for this player thinking that I wanted to see the song titles.

Reasons not to by this player:(1)This player is made very poorly. It feels like it is going to break. The paint on the buttons has already started to rub off and I barely use the device. (2) It skips worse than my Sony discman that is almost 10 years old. In the car you find yourself hearing snippets of the songs. It will even skip sitting on a table across the room (there was no dust on the CD). I'm not sure what's wrong with the player but sometimes it is simply unable to play an MP3 for no good reason (3) The headphone jack is finicky. You'll find yourself listening to mono for a while and realize that you have to push the headphone plug into the jack again. (4) Battery life is exceptionally bad. I'm lucky to get 3 hours out of the player. That's not enough to last me one day while I'm at work. Even though it comes with a rechargable battery pack, the battery gauge is still calibrated for alkalines so it looks like you have half of the battery life remaining right after a charge. (5) The ID-3 take support is pointless. If you haven't painstakenly labeled each one of your songs then you'll end up listening to "Unknown Tag" all day. It does NOT default to the file name if there is no ID-3 tag. Get the Rio Volt. Even though it has that annoying dancer at the bottom of the LCD screen, it's worlds better than this device.

1 out of 5 stars Good paper weight!.......2001-05-16

I have an SM200C... I wanted it so that I could travel and listen to MP3's, in the car on the plane etc.. Without testing it out first, I went on a vacation and nearly jumped out of the car when it skipped MP3 CD's like a schoolgirl skipps rope!

It skipps, it's readout does not have a light so that you can see it in the dark, the readout reads from very little angles, and the sinleg button interface work poorly when looking at the road and trying to change songs. I found myself hitting stop and pause alot!

Also if you plan on listening to something longer than 10 minutes, don't! It plays the first 5 minutes, and then skipps past!

LOOKING FOR A GOOD MP3 CD PLAYER>>> Look elsewhere!

1 out of 5 stars Still needs to be redesigned..........2001-04-12

I have tried out this player at some store and I was just disappointed.

The first things to look in the best players are: -Long battery life

-Great skip-protection

-Though body

This player has a very short battery life(3hr) and the skip-protection of 10 sec is pointless. For a player at this price(without mail-in rebate since it's not garanteed to get it), we could get something better with a solid body.

The sound quality is fair, but sometimes there's static or annoying sounds.

I recommend to use it by laying it on a table and the skip-protection is there so that you can move it a bit. In that case, you don't need batteries so just use the indoor adapter. So would you pay a little bit more to buy the same player except that you can carry it with you while listening to it? That's why barely one star is worth rating.

For those who are still using ni-cd batteries, this player is going to drain them in an hour or an hour and a half!

Some smart people use it while it's quiet around and they just sit there doing whatever they want. That's why skip-protection is THAT important! I was about to buy this player, but I won't use cuz I usually listen music outdoors...

And also from the date it was in stores in Canada, the price is (glups!) 233% of the American price...

Product Description

Pine Technology offers MP3 music lovers this lightweight, sleek, high-quality MP3 player. The portable SM-320V MP3 Player delivers hours of fun and music with MP3 files downloaded from the Internet. The player is very small so you might not even notice it inside your pocket. It runs on 2 AAA batteries, which will last for many hours unlike MD players, which is a battery hog due to the laser head and mechanisms. With all MP3 players, there are no moving parts so even on bumpy roads, your music would not skip. The buttons on the unit are nicely laid out so that you can use one hand to press the buttons. The best part of all is that you can use the player as a voice recorder. So you can record your ideas, lecturers or anything else on the road! You do not have to bring a separate device just for recording! With the D'Music player, you must connect it to your computer using the supplied cable via the parallel port. With such innovative features and design, the D'Music player is definitely worth its price tag. The D'Music is the most promising portable MP3 player that any audiophile could get. At this time, no other manufacturer has produced a portable MP3 player that could live up to Pine's D'Music MP3 player. The SM-320V is available with 32 or 64MB of memory on-board, in 7 different colors.

Amazon.com Product Description

The affordable Pine Technology SM-320V MP3 player offers 32 MB of built-in memory. You can add an optional 32 MB CompactFlash card for about an hour of listening pleasure. It also comes with software for ripping CDs and moving audio files. Preset equalizer settings include pop, classical, jazz, ex-bass, and flat.

The SM-320V runs on two AAA batteries for up to 10 hours of battery life. It comes with a leather carrying pouch and a one-year warranty.

4 out of 5 stars its a good player.......2003-02-19

good sound quality, battery life but its always hard to get the program to say that its communicating with th eplayer. i would recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent MP3 Player.......2001-12-26

When i first got this mp3 player it worked fine than after i downloded 5 songs to it i couldent download any more. So i just recoded them and llistened to it of of the computer speakers. This worked for a while then the memory erased its self but then when i put in new batt. it had no songs on it but now it works fine. i would recomend this mp3 plaer to anyone it is also nice and small so it can fit in your pocket (i do that at school) the only problem is the slow download speads becuse it uses a serial port to download but thats not to big of a problem for the convince of it the only other problem is that i still cant find how to get the software to rip the cd music to mp3s so i can download them.

4 out of 5 stars Great MP3 Player - needs more memory.......2001-03-23

I own the sister device to the Pine MP3 player, the D-Link DMP-100. When I first bought the device, I couldn't figure out how to download songs into the player. I spent 30 minutes on hold with the customer service dept. before they explained how to set the parallel port to "ECP MODE".

After that, downloads were not a problem. I was a bit disspointed that 32mb's translates to about 8 songs (max.) But the sound quality is TERRIFIC. One of the nicer features is the built-in equalizer.

When I bought my new computer with Windows Me, I encountered major conflicts with the D-link software. Their customer service suggested I download the D'music software that was tailored for Windows Me. For some strange reason, I could only download music with the D'music software once, before my DELL computer had conflicts with their software. Despite all the trouble I've gone through with this little device, I give it FOUR STARS because D-Link's website now features downloadable software for all platforms (i.e. Windows Me, 2000 etc...) I download a fresh set of songs into my mp3 player daily now.

But if you're thinking about buying an MP3 player, buy one with MORE built in memory - although the cost may be 50-60 dollars more than this one, you should consider the cost of a compact flash card - 32mb costs at least $40. Wouldn't it be easier to just have it built in? The choice is yours!

5 out of 5 stars Best MP3 player EVER!.......2001-03-09

This MP3 player cannot be beat, in terms of price, convienence, quality... It's 32 MB, which is good, expandable to 64 MB, which is quite nice. Supports variable-bitrate MP3's which means you can cram quite a few songs onto it. In regard to previous complaints about the software not working, this is simply a matter of an incorrect computer configuration, something that can be easily remedied. You should also make sure that you don't have any MP3 files in your folders that have invalid dates on them.

Ignore the computer software. This is a small, beautiful, reliable unit; it even records WAV files on the spot! There is no reason not to buy this, and quickly -- I think Pine has stopped producing them.

4 out of 5 stars Once i got it to work, it's great!.......2001-01-18

I recently wrote a review and complained about how the manual never tells you how to connect with the player. Once i changed the printer port to ECP mode, the player connects fine and downloading music is simple. The player is nice and small, and had a hold button wich is needed if kept in a pocket. The only drawback is the earphones, they are really cheap! I suggest you buy a decent pair and the player will be perfect! I love this player and use it daily while jogging!

    Product Description

Pine Technologies is capitalizing on the MP3 revolution with its D'music SM-320F, a portable MP3 player that weighs a little more than two ounces (without batteries) and easily fits in the palm of your hand. Since MP3s average just one-tenth the file size of the typical audio CD track - 4MB for a four-minute MP3 as opposed to 40MB for a four-minute CD track - the 64MB of memory in the D'music can hold an average of 16 songs at a CD-quality sample rate of 128 Kbps. That is at least as many songs as you'll get with most albums you'll find on CD or cassette. This player comes equipped for uploading/downloading music, voice recording, and FM radio. The player also features a very sturdy casing. There is room for an additional 32 MB of memory (SmartMedia) and the memory may be used for any type of file, not just MP3s. There is an internal battery charger, so that if you're using NiCad batteries, you don't have to take them out and put them in a charger to re-juice them. Digital capsule audio copyright protection system is included in this player. The sound quality is excellent and the fact that it isn't going to break if you drop it while you're running for your bus, make this a great buy.
