The radio arrived in a timely manner. The fidelity is really good for a small radio. It receives all our favorite stations. Some channels come in more clearly than on a more expensive portable radio I also own. I consider this an exellent value for the price. I would recommend this product for casual listening around the house or outdoors.

I was looking around for a small radio to have at my desk at work. I figured with a smaller unit, I would save space and not have a very good sound. I was wrong about this unit. I was very pleased to listen to the quality of sound from this unit. 2 people that sit near me in my office have enjoyed this radio as well and have ordered one for themselves as well. I highly recommend this product. It is a good price, small, and has a great sound.

This GE pocket radio is probably the best radio and value in the somewhat narrow market. Inexpensive and the vendor shipped promptly.

This radio does not provide good AM reception at all. In Chicago, it is difficult to receive any of the 50,000-watt stations without constantly adjusting the dial and the radio position. I understand it is small, and its FM reception is quite good, but to take this radio to a baseball game as an earlier reviewer suggested leaves one very disappointed.

Although GE's first version of this model, the 72585-A, was of bad quality, the company really shone through with their (internal) re-design -- model 72585-B.

Thomson (the makers and owners of the GE Electronics brand) corrected the annoying volume and reception fluctuations that plagued this radio when listening to FM (you had to turn up the radio to max volume and also you would frequently loose the station you were listening to.

On this model, Thomson also pumped up the radio's speaker output, so you don't have to turn up the radio so much to get a decent volume in a noisy environment. Also the idea of incorporating the FM antenna into the headphone jack (so you don't have to raise the FM whip when listening to FM stations with your stereo earphones) was ingenious. You can put the radio in your pocket and not worry about snapping the antenna off.

I just wish that this radio came with a slightly larger-diameter speaker (about 2" would be nice), to make the sound less tinny. Otherwise, it's a neat radio. I bought two from Amazon last year - one for daily use and one for backup in case I drop this one. :-)

Terrific pocket radio.......2001-01-17

It's true, as other reviewers have noted, that this unit won't give you the sort of reception you might expect from a larger, higher-priced unit. On the other hand, this is an excellent pocket-sized radio for toting along to the ballgame, carrying along on a hike or to the park, or tucking next to your pillow in bed. It's very thin and light, and the controls are all flush with the case, so it packs well. It won't fill a room with sound - it's not intended to - but it plays loud enough to listen to from a few feet, and the headphone jack can be used for private listening. Overall this is a nice, up-to-date rendition of the classic pocket radios from the 1950s dawn of the transistor.

This is a handy little radio that is pretty darn rugged. It went to South America for the summer and performed pretty well under very adverse conditions. Battery use was great. It now resides in the small Paraguayan village of Costa Jhu, receiving lots of soccer games I am told. For the price, it's a gem.

I have owned about 40 AM/FM radios in my lifetime. This includes ones in my cars, connected to my home stereo system, on my boat, etc. I bought my first GE Superadio from Sears in the mid to late 90s. I loved it so much I went back and bought a second one. Both Superradios give far superior reception to AM/FM radios that I paid much more for. The sound is great and the value for money rates a solid 5 stars. This radio really does an outstanding job of pulling in AM or FM stations that other radios cannot touch.

I read some of the negative reviews, but bought anyway. It works great for us. I was especially thrilled to have it in all the recent storms. My husband listens to a lot of AM talk radio and totes it all over the house - inside and out. He gets great reception, and couldn't be happier with the product. We have both receommended this to our friends/family already.

Radio plays clearly and with plenty of volume during the day. At night, it is hard to get many AM stations clearly. It is also a bit bulky in size.

Best Portable Radio.......2007-04-07

I love this radio. I have two of them now and use them in our barns to keep the sheep happy and educated by leaving it tuned to NPR all day. They say that it is being discontinued so I might even get another one. The single speaker is great fidelity and I had a similar GE product many years ago and it also was the best radio for outdoor, beach or any other use where clear audio and good reception at fairly high volume is required. Buy one now before it is too late!

Nice unit overall. Easy to install and works well. I couldn't get the weather station to work for me (maybe I'm out of range). The only thing I didn't like about it was no battery backup. In case of power failure you have to input all your radio presets, clock, etc., over again.

I got this for my wife, who wanted music in the kitchen. The light is a nice feature. Sound is better than I expected from a small unit. Radio reception is spotty, but we're pretty far out in the country so I'm not surprised.

The cd loader mechanism looks like the obvious place to fail first so I'm curious to see how long it lasts.

Installation was not much of a problem. Be sure you're comfortable drilling your cabinets.

Overall, we're very satisfied. 4 stars instead of 5 just because there is room for improvement. But for the money, it's a good player.

decent for cost GE spacemaker Radio/ cd player.......2007-03-17

This spacemaker is nice for the kitchen for general use. For the price I say that it is a good buy. The sound is ok but my last spacemeker cassette/ radio had bolder sound. The bass is week and there is no adjustment for it. There is a convenient remote operation, and memory channel mode. But you have to page through all of the memory Vs designated memory 1-10. The old knob tuner was quicker for finding stations, so this is a bit annoying for time. The CDs play well also.

After much searching and one return, I settled on this model.

Good points include the dual time dual mode alarms, lock out clock settings, (very handy among curious toddlers--can't reset), nap alarms, and especially the forward and reverse time set keys.

Agree that the shortfalls of this unit are the stiffness of the rotary radio controls, and the FM tuner. Like the other person, I can't get two of my favorite stations, that my wife can get on her clock radio, but can get on the radio (also an old GE) in the bathroom. Also there is bleed over from some of the stronger stations across the lower half of the FM band. And the AM is really hard to tune, even on some local stations. Oddly enough, I returned a digital tuner radio with the same problem, not to mention a wimpy chirping alarm; although the AM tuner on that modlel was superb.

Fortunately, it does get the stations (3 out of 5) I like in the morning, so I can live with that. I'm puzzled that my wife has three radios with good tuners; yet I get ones with the bleed over problems.

At least it wakes me up in the morning and so far the alarm (which is what clock radios are designed to do) works well.

An average (mediochre for the radio, excellent for the alarm system) of 4 stars.

Horrible reception.......2003-04-18

I bought this clock radio for the large display (nice) and supposedly good reception. The reception is awful, and I cannot tune into two of my favorite stations, which my husband is able to get on his bedside radio. I have tried everything: moving the radio, placing it on a stack of books, gentley moving the tuner. Nothing works. I do not recommend this radio.

Lots of Features... but didn't last a year.......2003-01-21

Bought it because of the dual alarm and auto dimmer features which worked well. Overall, the radio not very intuitive to operate. Now I am digging out the warranty policy for a problem with the radio... IT WON'T TURN OFF!! It came on in the middle of the day and the hitting the "OFF" button will not turn it off. Even tried unplugging the unit all day and the radio was still on after plugging it back in. I'm quite sure that it has only been 11 months since it was purchased, I will try to find my receipt. Is it worth it to ship it back for a replacement? We will see how GE handles it.

Great clock radio on the 2nd try.......2002-12-20

I too had problems with my original GE clock radio dimming out completely at night after having it for only 2 weeks. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to see what time it was. I returned the clock for another one and haven't had a problem. The display never dims too much now and everything has been working perfectly for over 6 months. The first one must have been part of a bad batch.

Nice big numbers and all the right features. One problem is the brightness level. Your choice for the display is either "high" or "variable," which adjusts the brightness depending on the light level in the room. The darker the room, the darker the display. The problem with mine is that when the room's dark at night, the display turns itself off or all but off. So, I have to keep it on the "high" setting all night, which I don't like either because it's too bright.

I picked up this item because my mobile home was getting crowded and we needed more space.
The name Spacemaker is a bit misleading considering this item actually has mass and takes up space. Of course if you remove a larger item and replace it with the Spacemaker then you will have more space available than when you started although less space than if you just threw the old item out and did not replace it with the Spacemaker.
A more accurate name might be the Spacesubstituter or Spacereplacement although admittedly those names are not as catchy.
Also the Spacemaker has the added benefit of containing an AM/FM radio in it so your new space can play music.

G.E. Spacemaker radio is the best........2002-06-07

I consider my self very fortunate to be able to replace the Spacemaker I have been using for over 20 years. The only thing that finally failed was the "ever-on" switch. The new one is just as good if not better with a beautiful reproduction of all types of music. I will always remember the comment that a house painter who was redoing my interior made to me. "That's the best sounding radio I have ever heard!" Incidentally, I am still using the old one in another room.

Idea = 5, Execution = 1; Still a buy, but a hassle........2001-12-22

We own one of these from years ago. It's such a good idea, I'm shopping here to buy another. But the other reviewers are right; It's at least a moderate hassle to install, and the engineering is primitive (string & pulleys analog tuner with no presets, tendency to drift out of tune / off station, tendency for parts to break down -- our FM died perhaps a year after installation). Still, I'm buying another one. But I sure wish somebody would finally do this idea correctly. As it is, this will probably be another go-round of buy, try, try again, pitch that one, buy another, try again . . . . I'd gladly pay double this price for one that worked right and was more reliable.

Great appliance but not reliable.......2001-11-19

We received one of these as a gift about five years ago. It was perfect for our needs in the kitchen. But the touch button switch to turn on the radio gradually got less and less reliable until we had trouble getting it to turn on at all. The light fixture burned out 40 watt appliance bulbs on a frequent basis, perhaps four or five a year. Also, the light began to have problems staying on. It would flicker and cause interference static) with the radio. We finally removed the appliance because we were afraid of electrical fire. The appliance has only a one year warranty and our problems began after that. Despite the fact that this appliance has had its problems, we miss it terribly and want another appliance with similar features. We are not interested in the ones with CD or tape player. They take up quite a bit more space than this model.

The most "valued" appliance in the house. Love the easy touch on/off switch... Great for a quick NPR fix in the kitchen at the "touch of a button". Paid approx $... through ... 5 years ago. Amazon price excellent. It does take drilling holes under the cabinet - but the space saving, convenience, and cleanliness of not having radio on the counter is well worth it. I like the tape player too because it is very basic and has proven reliable.

GE's model 7-4895 combination AM/FM/CD clock radio is full of useful options to get you up in the morning and down to sleep at night. This unit features an intuitive control panel that's refreshingly easy to program, and on the few occasions we needed the user's guide (which is bilingual: English and Spanish), the answers we needed were always close at hand.

The model 7-4895 boasts a sleek, contemporary design. Made of durable plastic, it comes in champagne gold with a matte, smudge-proof finish and charcoal gray detailing. Its red LED panel is large and bright--easy to read from a distance or in the dark. It does sit with a large (11- by 8-inch) footprint, so before you bring it home, make sure your nightstand can accommodate it.

One-touch buttons make programming this clock a snap. Precluding nagging questions like "Is it set? Was that the right button?" most of the unit's functions are confirmed by a red LED and a soft, audible click. The only drawback with the settings is that you can't set the hour and minutes independently; you have to cycle through every minute of every hour. Fortunately, the display scrolls quickly and you can adjust if you overshoot.

One of the great pleasures of this clock is its built-in CD player, complete with shuffle and repeat play. You can set it to wake to a favorite CD or even a favorite cut from the disc. Using the handy repeat setting, your CD will play for another two hours or until you turn it off. If you're using headphones while the clock is set to wake, music is channeled to both the speaker and headphones, making sure you get up. You can also opt to be wakened by a conventional, though impressively jarring, beeping alarm.

A built-in headphone jack lets you listen while others sleep. The headphone jack offers a convenient stereo output from the CD player, though the device itself has only a single, 3-inch speaker. Sound from the radio is monaural (from speaker or headphones), but we were nevertheless impressed with the speaker's rich, deep quality.

If you're an inveterate snoozer, you'll find that the supersized snooze button is an easy whack. Also, you can program your snooze increments (anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes between interruptions), and you can languish in snooze mode for a luxurious span of nearly two hours.

This unit comes with a practical power backup, though the supply itself--a 9-volt battery--is not included. In the event of a power failure, the unit immediately switches to battery operation and holds time and settings for up to eight hours--long enough, we hope, for you to finish a good night's sleep.

I got this clock in a silent aution just because it looked cool. I didn't know that it would become a clock that I would love for several years. This clock have MANY wonderful features like the ramp up alarm feature: It always woke me up w/o jumping out of bed like I'd heard gunfire. It also has great sound quality in the radio, unlike many other alarms. Its also easy to set and easy to turn off. I also like the large display, its easy for me to read at night. The only downside is also my favorite upside, the ramp up alarm. After awhile, it does get kind of obnoxious, but it still keeps me from jumping. I had this alarm for about 5 years before I purchased an iHome for my iPod, and I would recomend it to ANYONE!

my parents own this thing and put it in the spare bedroom, and every time i stay at their house, i wonder why, for the love of god, they keep this thing.

i hit the on/off button on accident repeatedly because it makes no sense where it's at. they are larger than the snooze button. someone needs to tell the manufacturer that snooze buttons are big because you reach up and hit them in a sleepy state. you might as well get out of bed if you need to expend effort looking for the snooze button.

it took me an eternity how to figure out how to set the alarm so that it would go off in the morning, and how to turn the alarm off so that it didn't beep every few minutes. now, i can't figure out how to turn the alarm off. i've pressed cancel and every combination of buttons that i can think of. all cancel does is make the dot that signifies that the alarm has been set to flash at you for a few seconds before it goes back to normal.

an alarm clock shouldn't need an owner's manual. an on/off button...i mean, what in the heck is that? what's "on"? shouldn't it just say "off"? and shouldn't "off" be indicative that you've turned the alarm completely off until the next time you choose to reset the alarm? if they mean "off" to signify that you've turned the alarm off, but it's still armed for the next morning, shoudn't there be a button that says, "really off"? and "on" button means that the alarm is set, right?

i think this is the stupidest alarm clock i've ever dealt with.

Worst Alarm Clock I Have Ever Owned.......2006-01-08

First of all, I must say that you shouldn't believe the claims that this alarm clock has a battery back up feature, as my power has gone out several times and it has never worked. Also, I have yet to find a button on this thing that will actually turn the alarm feature OFF. Which means that someone like myself, who works a rotating schedule, must always remember to reset the alarm to a later time or else wake up at the crack of dawn on their day off. There are so many buttons on the top of this alarm clock that it's very difficult to hit the actual snooze button when you're half asleep. Don't waste your money on this one!

I bought this unit to replace my old one that was just...well....old. I love the gradual awake feature. This means I won't wake up the neighbors like my monster loud old one did. There are a few drawbacks to this unit. First, the numbers are so bright it lights up the entire room at night. There is no dimming feature on this unit. Secondly it is hard to tune a radio station, and when you do, it has to be adjusted the next day. Thirdly the volume adjustment goes from high to low to off. There was no way for me to play music low enough for me to fall asleep.
And finally some bright engineer put the on/off button next to the snooze button. So if you reach up to hit the snooze in the morning, and accidentally hit the on/off button, you are screwed. The alarm is now off and won't go off again until the next morning.

Really Neat Clock.......2005-02-13

when I was living at home, I used a stereo to wake myself up in the morning. The trouble was, I got too used to sleeping with music on that I would always sleep past the alarm. My parents sent me this clock in graduate school to wake me up. I really like the gradual waking feature, which doesn't wake up up abruptly, but the alarm gradually gets louder. The nap function is also wonderful because you can sleep by it or you can time things like food or laundry. The only problem I had with it was the fact that the alarm will turn on at the set time every day unless you cancel it. I once forgot to cancel the alarm when I went home for a weekend and my apartment mates were very cranky when I got back. It's a very loud alarm, I don't blame them. Overally, it's a really good alarm clock, but you need to remember to cancel the alarm when you don't want it.
