Amazon.com Product Description
Boasting an acoustically balanced wooden enclosure and an enhanced front-firing 3-inch speaker, the Sangean WR-2 tabletop radio offers the sound and features of a living room system in a cabinet that fits conveniently in a bedroom, kitchen, or garage. Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its walnut-finished wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet's front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio. Complementing the housing is Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive.

Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.

A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (ideal for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I just bought my third Sangean WR-2.......2007-05-25

I bought one for my kitchen, then I got one for my parents, and today I just bought another one for me. I'm very happy with the radio sound, the features and the tuning sensitivity. The display is adjustable for both the on and off modes--an interesting and useful feature. It does take a bit of understanding to set the radio up and that could probably use a bit of improvement so I'd only give the ergonomics 4 stars. The first one I bought was the piano white, I got the walnut for may parents. Both are beautifully made--and heavy radios. Sound is excellent. I also own the Boston Receptor, Tivoli Songbook, Eton Sound 100. These are all good radios, but this one towers over the rest. It's also the least expensive which still surprises me.

4 out of 5 stars Dispaly issues.......2007-05-17

Excellent sound, excellent receiver. But, I bought the unit for a bedroom where it would be used as a clock and occasional alarm in addition to a radio. From its position, across the room, the dispaly was either way to bright, or not bright enough to see the display. And the digits of the time dispaly are not bold enough to be seen at any distance easily. It was necessary to buy a $10. digital alarm clock for our time/alarm purposes. Summary: Great piece of gear, the dispaly may not meet everyone's needs.

3 out of 5 stars Good--Because Most Radios are so Terrible.......2007-04-24

Too bad radios have gotten so poor. They make this radio seem better than it deserves

It is a "tabletop radio" and it works pretty well. Very decent mono sound comes out the speaker. It will tune major FM local stations. It is a fair price. I was hoping I would be able listen to any local FM station (various college stations, etc.), but I can't, the radio circuitry isn't good enough. If you want to tune your favorate big station, use the power button, volume control, maybe even turn up the volume high enough to hear in the next room, it will work great and is easy to use. If you want to listen to an FM station from out of town, this is not a good choice.

Note it has clock radio features, but be careful. For a clock radio, this unit has wonderful sound, however, the user interace is terrrible--it has two rows of uniform buttons that look cool but are poorly labeled and have obscure function. It is important that a clock radio, which one uses when half asleep, be easier to use.

The LCD panel has terrible contrast and turning up the brightness to make it easier to read will make your bedroom pretty bright and still not be very legible. We have a crappy clock radio sitting on top of the WR-2, we read the time (very easily) off the crappy radio.

Other reviewers have been enthusiastic with this model. I think that is because FM radios have gotten so terrible. We have a Sony shower radio, and the two big local NPR stations tune in "barely" and "not really" (respectively). Compared to that, yes, this radio is great. But radios can work much better. I had hoped this would have. (Note, I haven't really used the AM function.)

I AM pleased I bought it, but is isn't as good as I had hoped.

5 out of 5 stars Just a clock radio?.......2007-02-09

I took the time on line to read what other reviewers wrote about this particular radio and some other brands. I chose this over another product even though they seemed about the same. This radios had only one complaint, was the blue light. The other radio, people had complained about setting up the clock times.
The blue light has not been a problem b/c we placed this in our bathroom where it could be listened to while getting ready for work, etc.
We have a difficult time with reception at our house due to signal towers on another foothill near us and for some products, like cell phones, and some television cable companies, they do not always work well here. So I was concerned that may be an issue with this radio. It not only works great but I have to agree with other reviewers that the sound is wonderful. It holds up to our other more expensive radio. I would definately recommend this product to others who are looking for great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Super sounding alarm clock.......2007-02-03

This clock is just what I was looking for. The only thing that I would have wanted was stereo speakers. But the other one that I was looking at (boston) really didn't have enough bells and whistles and the sound was much to bassy. I do find it hard to see the clock compared to others.
