Monster iCarPlay Plus iPod Wireless FM Transmitter/Charger.......2007-06-27

I bought the Monster iCarPlay FM Transmitter/ Charger to listen to my two year old color iPod in the car. I had previously used a DLO FM Transmitter/ Charger. The DLO was of a cradle design and it was somewhat heavy when my iPod was placed in it. The power oulet in my car became loose due to the combined weight of the DLO and the iPod. I wanted to get a transmitter and charger that would not have this issue so I decided to get the Monster iCarPlay.

The iCarPlay was very easy to use, I just selected one of the preset frequencies, tuned my car radio, and was able to listen to my iPod without much of a problem. I tried to select a custom frequency with the '+' and '-' keys and that worked perfectly. All the little buttons on the iCarPlay are lit with red LED's and it has a red digital display for the broadcast frequency which is clearly visible during daytime. One of the problems I had with DLO was that due to my sitting position in the minivan was unable to see the broadcast frequency.

The signal from the iCarPlay is strong and clear, and I've tried this in my car, antenna in the back, and in the minivan, antenna in the front. It completely charges my iPod in about ninety minutes. The only issues that I have with the iCarPlay is that the keys feel flimsy, I am afraid that they won't take a lot of abuse, and it is a little pricey especially in comparision to the iTrip.

A lifesaver!.......2007-06-23

I'm actually in Iraq and this thing is a lifesaver! I use it everyday while driving around this place and without this, I would have to listen to endless hours of Armed Forces Network radio which is horrible. A good tune once in a great while...now with this...great tunes all day long. VERY tough as well since its been subjected to hours of extreme heat and more dust than you could imagine. sure it was not made for this specific purpose but it sure does work well. I had another FM Transmitter and it died within a week. This has worked just fine for over 5 months now.

This product works great ! I have driven across the United States with it and had little or no problems at all.
I have driven thru major urban areas, (downtown L.A and San Diego) with NO PROBLEMS.
Unfortunantly, I have had it for 1 year and 2 months and it finally broke. Must have been from all the tugging and pulling, getting caught on things. I feel lost without one, so...time to buy another!

Poor sound quality.......2007-06-14

Yes, the biggest problem is the poor sound quality you get from this unit. Then there's the problem of station selection. It gives you 8 possible choices for stations to use. If you live in a large metropolitan area like I do, it is extremely likely that every one of those stations is going to be picking up a signal. Only one of the stations is usable in my area and I still get occasional signals from radio broadcasts.

Do yourself a favor and avoid the FM transmitters. If you can't get a direct aux connection to your car stereo system and you have a cassette deck, get a cassette adapter. The sound quality is much better and they're much cheaper too.

If you must get an FM transmitter, don't get this one.

Great product, but...........2007-06-27

While the benefits sited in the other reviews I agree with, here are 2 showstoppers for me.
When power is applied it automatically starts playing. I like control, and I hate devices that assume what it is I want.

But the really rotten issue is, for most iPod mounts, like my belkin tunedok and Nyko Universal Car Mount you will need a sendstation dock at about $30 to extend the connector past the dock slot. Some designer was not thinking!

Look at the Monster iCarPlay Plus instead.

Best so far, but far from best.......2007-06-27

I commute across Los Angeles, CA on a daily basis, and the FM band is literally cheek to jowl with radio stations. Most FM transmitters (and I've tried at least 6-7 of the high-end ones) on the market are practically useless for me as the huge radio stations out here just walk all over their weak signals. This one has proven to be most effective, even with low-volume podcasts. If you are just listening to music, it will usually work well enough, assuming you can find those precious dead spots in the FM band. Some big caveats:

1. The dock connector chassis is wider than the actual connector, making it completely unusable with most form-fitting cases and skins. I've yet to find one that allows me to keep the case on and plug in this transmitter. The connector needs to fit absolutely flush with the bottom of the iPod or it will cut in and out as the connector wiggles loose. If I had known this before buying it, I might have gone with another transmitter (though as I mentioned above, this one has proven to be the best so far out of many +$50 transmitters).

2. Selecting stations with this device is sluggish, and nigh impossible in any kind of driving situation. We are talking up to a full 3-5 seconds of lag between a button press and the transmitter reacting to your press. Repeated pressing will only result in chaos as the device scrolls through menus, scans up and down, etc. I believe this is due to the fact that the transmitter is using the iPod operating system to control the various menus and frequency adjustments.

3. Whenever you connect the transmitter, it will autoplay the first track on the iPod, whatever that happens to be. Not the last thing you were listening to - it will always be the first track of all your media files, whether that is an music file, podcast or video.

A previous reviewer indicated that adjusting the volume on your iPod should improve the quality of transmission, but I don't believe that is true, as the output through the dock connector is pure digital. I could be wrong, but I've tried the same trick without any discernible difference in transmission strength.

Was it worth the ~$70 I bought it for? If you live in a big city like LA or NY where the FM band is crowded, it may be more hassle than it's worth, as you will be frequently changing frequencies while on the road, an unsafe practice at best. However, if you live in an area where there is more space on the radio dial, this transmitter might be a good fit for you.

Worked exactly as stated, the auto-scan feature is quite a novelty. I never really had any success with iPod FM transmitters before and gave up on them...until I decided to take a chance on this unit after reading the reviews about it. I'm glad I spent the money on this as it worked exactly how I wanted/needed it to. Good stuff!

The icarPlay Wireless FM Transmitter could also be called iBoatPlay.
We purchased above item to use on our Sailboat while cruising Central America, playing music or listening to language lessons (while standing watch) or any other time! Simply plug said item in to an outlet, tune your radio to designated frequency, adjust your speakers to where you wish to hear the sound, and than enjoy. (I think that qualifies as a: "1-2-3" installation unit).

Solid Performer- Most of the time.......2007-03-18

I have been using my iCarPlay Wireless for about a year and a half now. I have had no problems whatsoever with the battery in my iPod as some have mentioned. The only problem I have is that the low end of the FM band is pretty crowded where I live and this often has me searching for a usable frequency. Some frequencies seem to work better depending on the time of day. I am getting a car in about two weeks that has an auxiliary jack (Yea!) but this product has been a reliable stop gap. If you are looking for a wireless transmitter, I would recommend this product, but remember- it is a compromise. A direct input is better.

I tried this unit with a different iPods in different vehicles, and the only sound it produced was a bit of whiny interference no matter which station I tuned in to. The results were very disappointing.

Do yourself a big favor and look elsewhere for auto iPod hookup.

Only lasted for a half hour.......2006-11-05

We bought ours at a well known electronic/media store and overpayed for it. We plugged it in as soon as we got it. It sounded great compared to the last ipod trip we bought from Belkin. There was no static and the sound was good, but it stopped working a half an hour later and that was the end of it. It never worked again. Luckily we got our money back. Good thing!!

Weak Signal.......2006-08-21

I have used this FM modulator for some months now. It is very pricey, to say the least. Here are my experiences from driving many thousands of miles with it attached to my iPod.

First, this unit is very expensive, more than most modulators.

Second, it leaves a background hiss on your FM, noticeable when you turn up the volume.

Third, if there is the slightest FM radio signal the unit is worthless. You can fuss for hours, as I have, with rearraging the cable coming from it, to block out the distant signal, but it is a pain. If you encounter a really local FM signal on the modulator's presets, forget it. And if you are driving in a metropolitan area the unit cannot be used, since there are no open frequencies, and/or the modulator's output is too weak to overcome any signal. Also changing frequency presets in the unit is a pain; if it is not a preset, you need two hands.

Fourth, the modulator overdeviates. This means that on poor quality FM radios, like those found as standard equipment in most vehicles (for example my Dodge Durango), the sound will be distorted on many iPod tunes. I found that on high quality car stereos (like the optional McIntosh stereo in my Subaru), the sound is excellent, although still noisy (hiss).

This unit is way overpriced, and is virtually useless in most metropolitan areas because of the weak modulator output.
