Sangean makes some amazing portable radios, and the SR-1 seals the company's reputation for packing high-quality sound components into the smallest possible space. Measuring only 3 inches high by 1.5 inches wide and 0.5 inches deep, the miniscule radio requires only one AAA battery to pump out hours of FM or AM sound.

The SR-1 comes with a pair of earbud headphones, but to really see what the radio can do you need to attach a pair of quality headphones to it. It can amplify the signal to amazing levels with no distortion, and the DBB (Deep Bass Boost) feature really comes into play when the SR-1 is connected to headphones that can handle the resulting low-frequency boost.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about the radio is its outstanding reception. We tested the unit all over the place and it was able to pull in signals in a basement office that other radios couldn't even pick up outside. We were able to crisply tune in stations with the dial control, but there's no digital tuner, and not having the ability to store and instantly recall stations can be a drag. The other big downside to the SR-1 is that it uses headphones to augment the built-in antenna, and reception suffers greatly when headphones aren't plugged into the unit. Fortunately, there's a bypass switch on the side that lets you listen to music through the built-in speaker even if headphones are attached.

To be honest, the built-in mono speaker doesn't sound so hot, so you'll be missing out on a lot if you don't plan to use headphones. If you can live with that limitation--and the fact that you can't pick up the weather or TV bands--the SR-1 is an excellent little radio that delivers sound quality and reception that is far out of proportion to its size. --T. 5 out of 5 stars Best Tiny Radio Available.......2003-02-26

The SR-1 is a great package combining good sensitivity and selectivity with good audio in a featherweight package. AM & FM reception are both quite good (although the ear buds are needed for FM since the wire serves as the antenna) with the ability to pick up AM stations several hundred miles away at night. The internal speaker sounds good considering the tiny size of this radio, but it's not room filling sound. The ear buds sound decent, but as other reviewers have stated there are better options available... but I'd only recommend it for music as news / sports sounds fine with the set provided. The only ergonomic problem with this radio is that it is hard to use some of the controls with the radio in its supplied pouch. Battery life is great and it only uses a single AAA cell.

Overall I'd highly recommend this radio as a take anywhere means of staying in touch with what's going on or to listen during a commute. It has been recently discontinued by Sangean so act fast if you're interested and find one still in stock.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfectly designed.......2002-04-20

I've had this product for over 8 months and would like to say that it has been the best little radio I've owned. However, like all portables, the headphone jack is starting to warp and the connection to the headphones is starting to lose coherence. For some strange reason, Sangean placed the power switch right next to the headphone jack so that every time you switch the radio on or off, you have to swivel the headphone jack out of the way. This incessant wear is the reason why the connection is starting to deteriorate. I wish Sangean (and other manufacturers) would address the inherent problems with the placement of headphone jacks because I have always encountered this problem. Otherwise, the AM reception is great and FM is good, no problems.

4 out of 5 stars For the price/utility, a nifty product.......2001-12-10

I bought this because I wanted an extremely small radio with both AM/FM reception that was almost credit card sized for use on commuting trips on Amtrak. Overall, I am pleased, and at the price point--quite pleased. It runs on one AAA battery for a long time (replaced once in 1 year). It is small enough to hide in an inappropriate location (say, a classical concert) to hear a game :). Surprisingly good FM sound through the earbuds--the small speaker is not very useful.

Small downsides: uncomfortable, hard earbuds--recommend replacements with anything compatible; paint on radio case easily rubs off; and due to the size, analog tuning is trial and error. A digital tuner with presets would be a plus--but I note that similar sized radios with that feature are almost 2X in price. Overall, a very good, very small, low-power, "hideable" personal radio.

5 out of 5 stars What a toy!.......2001-11-03

Anyone who has anything negative to say about the Sangean SR-1 obviously isn't old enough to remember what the first pocket transistor radios were like! I bought one in the early 60's for the equivalent of more than a hundred dollars. The quality of materials and construction was laughably poor, as was the performance. It was AM only and with the, more than two foot long, telescoping antenna fully extended it would not even pick up all the local stations in a medium sized town (while eating costly nine volt batteries in less than an hour).
The amount of technology packed into the SR-1 is truly amazing (three IC's, four transistors, and one FET along with associated components). Overall quality is excellent and performance is astonishing when realistic expectations are held. There really is no point in trying to listen to music out of a one inch speaker but for news, sports, and talk radio the clarity is excellent and volume is adequate in a quiet room.
Let me say that the best thing you can do with the enclosed ear-buds is cut the cord about six inches from the plug and use that as your external FM antenna when listening to the speaker. Then borrow a suitable pair of phones from one of your Walkman style gadgets for music listening. FM stereo can be quite breathtaking with a strong local signal, and very usable reception of AM stations hundreds of miles away is common at night.
For thirty bucks it's a trip!

1 out of 5 stars Bad reception, worthless.......2001-10-14

I bought this because it was inexpensive and I thought it'd be nice for my daily commute to work and back on the San Francisco bus system(MUNI). Waiting at the bus stop with this was the first sign of trouble. The reception was awful everwhere I went. Maybe the reception clears up in say, the burbs, but downtown city dwellers, forget about it. The built-in speaker option is a nice idea though. I just wish it would have picked up more than one station.
