Stay informed and prepared during emergencies with this self-powered three-in-one radio, which combines an AM/FM/shortwave tuner with a flashlight and cell phone charger--all without requiring any batteries. The FR250 receives its power from a hand-crank generator, which delivers unlimited juice whether you're renewing your cell phone's batteries, lighting your path, or using one of the seven international shortwave bands. The bundled functions make this a great tool for home weather emergencies--such as tornadoes or hurricanes--and for camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities. The feature set debuts with the AM/FM tuner, which lets you enjoy NPR, talk radio, or sports and entertainment programming while away from home. Should local channels seem a bit limiting, you can turn to the seven shortwave bands, which receive signals from around the world. Plus, the sound is consistently solid whether you're listening through the built-in 2.5-inch speaker or the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

It's during emergencies, however, that the FR250 really shines. The built-in double-white LED source keeps the area illuminated should the power go out or the car break down, while the flashing red LED and siren can alert others to an accident or put out a call for help. Meanwhile, the cell phone charger ensures that you won't be caught with your charge down at the worst possible time. The charger's output jack measures 3.5 mm, but the radio includes a variety of other cell phone plug tips to fit as many models as possible.

Though the hand-crank generator is perhaps the most convenient powering option, it's by no means the only one. Users can also power the radio using three AA batteries, an AC adapter (not included), or the built-in rechargeable NiMH battery pack. The battery pack receives its charge from the dynamo crank or from the AC adapter, so you don't have to keep cranking the generator each time you want power, but can instead juice up the NiMH battery pack and let it do the work for you.

Additional features include a telescoping antenna for the FM and shortwave bands and a fine-tuning control knob that's superimposed on the main tuning knob for better reception. The radio measures 6.7 by 6.25 by 2.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
