SONY ICF-CD837 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD Player
SONY ICF-CD837 AM/FM Stereo Clock Radio with CD Player
Product Description
Amazon.com Review
If you're looking for a serious clock radio with terrific sound as well as a bevy of useful features, Sony's ICF-CD873 is definitely one to consider. It comes equipped with a CD player, a digital AM/FM tuner with five radio presets, a pair of 2.5-inch stereo speakers with a built-in 3.5-inch miniwoofer, and Sony's Voice Plus system. You can even jump between standard and daylight savings time at the push of a single button.
The ICF-CD873 also has a dual-alarm system: alarm A wakes you to the CD, while alarm B wakes you to either your favorite radio station or one of three sounds--buzzer, bird, or river. Another sweet touch is the three-position volume setting for the alarms, which lets you decide the exact level of sound you want to be awakened by.
There are a few disappointments. Although the sleep/timer can be set to shut off after 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes, it works with the radio only. We wish we could drift asleep to a calming CD, or the bird or river sounds. Plus, there is no battery backup, so if the power is out or the clock in simply unplugged, after 20 minutes the clock shuts down and the alarm settings are lost.
In order to accommodate all these features, the ICF-CD873 is a bit larger than most clock radios, but with its deep gray housing and royal blue grille it retains a clean, contemporary look.
One thing that won't disappoint is the ICF-CD873's remarkable sound, which ranks with the best we've heard from a clock radio. The speakers are small but exceptionally clear, with good separation and balance. And because the ICF-CD873 has a relatively beefy amplifier, it plays at loud levels with low distortion. Mega Bass not only works but has a continuously variable level control between its minimum and maximum settings. This makes a huge difference in the unit's overall tonal balance. The tuner does a great job of pulling in radio stations, and if you want to listen to music without disturbing your spouse there's a minijack for headphones.
Serious? Indeed! Sony's ICF-CD873 is about as good as it gets when it comes top-flight clock radios. --Wayne Garcia

Customer Reviews:
Excellent product for the price.......2007-02-01
I did a fair amount of research both online and in local stores to find the best CD alarm clock for my money. Most of them seemed either way to expensive or cheaply made. As soon as I saw and tested out this unit, however, I knew it was a winner. Now after having purchased it and used it for a week or two I'm really very satisfied. This unit is built to last and has surprisingly "big" sound for its size. The CD player doesn't hum or whir loudly, the display is nice and big and the features are pretty easy to use.
A couple features that I don't think you'll find out about by reading the spec. chart are as follows:
-You can set both of the alarms to CD (which many other models boasting dual alarms won't allow) and even to the same track. The second alarm just overrides the first if it's still going.
-Buzzer alarm doesn't get progessively louder but does get progressively faster, which is nice.
-Snooze button works in 10 min. increments.
-CD lid is not spring loaded and must be opened and closed manually (which was actually one reason I liked this model, seeing as how nearly all of the other models seemed to have flimsy and often very slow opening mechanisms).
-Display can be seen fairly well even from an angle (which was a problem found with various other models).
For the $35 it's OK.......2007-01-10
I bought this during the mad Xmas rush to keep @ my desk @work. It's small enough to fit in the corner of my work cubicle.
Actually, my rating would be a 3.5
Cons: The volume control is inconveniently located in the right hand rear corner. if you keep it at the same volume,it's ok, you don't have to hassle with reaching to the back.
Pros: a plus, the inline MP3 player connection, conveniently located in front. the large numbers for the clock; the CD loading is conveniently located at the top of the unit; the inline is very easy to use and connects instantly at the touch of a button. the top is black, so smudges, ink from your pen or oil from your fingers don't show up as easily as on white.
For the $35 I paid at the register, it's OK for the money.
It's just OK.......2006-06-14
I'm somewhat disappointed with Sony on this one.
CONS: The volume dial is inconveniently located on the right side, low towards the back. The AM/FM analog tuner is a dial with numbers on it. No battery back up. My unit has a slight hum at all times -- don't know if that's typical, or if mine is just defective. Sound is just OK, not great. Not as compact as description would lead you to believe (still pretty large footprint).
PROS: The clock display is large, with 3 brightness settings. Has Line-In for MP3 players.
Overall, it's just OK. I guess I shouldn't have expected too much for about $40.

Great clock, so so CD and radio quality.......2005-11-10
My daughter falls asleep to a CD every night on a boombox, so when we decided she needed a clock in her room too, we replaced the boombox with this CD clock radio. The CD quality will suffice for a child, but for those adults who may want to turn up the volume every so often, you will probably be disappointed. I don't use the radio because we have really bad reception with mountains just south of us, but a digital tuner would have been nice. And what's with the built-in subwoofer? Amazon shows this as a feature but I have yet to find anything in my manual about it. Maybe I'm blind...but I'm not deaf...it certainly does NOT have the sound of a subwoofer. I would like to see a dual alarm LED with excellent CD sound, digital tuner, nap feature and nature sounds.

I'm a big fan of Sony products. This Sony clock radio is worth every penny. The am/fm reception is very good. The cd player is not only user friendly but sounds great! Although, this is not a high end table radio costing hundreds more! For @ $50 bucks you can't go wrong!

it's bulkier than i thought it would be. But i like the white personally. As a clock, it works excellently, however, not so good as a CDplayer/radio. A slight shake can pause the music for 2 seconds easily and i dont know if its because i live in a dorm or because it doesnt catch FM signals really well, i can never listen to good quality of music on radio.
one more thing, it took me a while to figure all the functions.

We love this CD Player and Alarm Clock. It is easy to read the numbers and the CD Player work great. Changing the time and the alarm was a little difficult at first because it was not intuitive like other alarm clocks that we have used, but once we actually read the directions, it was simple.

Amazon.com Product Description
This model of the Sony Dream Machine line, which comes with a built-in CD player with shuffle/repeat, is designed to add the features of a CD stereo to your wake-up routine. It has 3D surround-sound speakers, including a centralized woofer. The Voiceplus system verbally announces the time and guides you through alarm setup and other features. With the nature sound alarm you can wake to the sound of a flowing stream or bird song. The alarm can use any track on the CD to wake you up, and the phase-locked-loop synthesized tuner has five random memory presets for easy, one-button tuning of the AM/FM radio. The unit also calculates daylight savings time.
Customer Reviews:
Looks Good, Sounds Great.......2004-11-21
I've had this unit for several years and it has performed flawlessly. Only wish the clock display was a little larger as i have it about 12 feet away and it's a little hard to read when you first get up and your eyes are adjusting.
A very serviceable clock-radio.......2003-06-09
I purchased the Sony clock-radio ICF-CD803 several years ago, and was quite pleased with it overall until the button that turned on the radio started not to work. In order to turn on the radio, I would have to set the alarm to the radio mode and then advance the alarm until the radio came on. It was not a major drawback for me, but the one feature of that clock-radio that used to annoy me, (apart from the fact it had only 6 pre-sets,) was the fact that one could not select just the radio to wake up to. One could wake up to the CD, the CD and then the radio, or a beeper alarm. I never understood this, but it wasn't a major drawback for me. I bought the clock-radio for sale here, the ICF-CD873 in November 2002, and it does not have this problem. I can wake up to the CD, the radio, a beeper alarm, or some fairly ersatz birdsong or a running river. Like its predecessor, the sound on the ICF-CD873 is very respectable for a clock-radio. Of course, the sound from its little speakers is not as good as that from my 16" JBLs, but it is not that far behind, and as bright and bassy as any little clock-radio by your bed would need to be. I like the "voice-plus" feature where a (slightly Japanese-accented,) woman's voice tells you the time, because, as is common with every digital clock I've ever encountered, the display is too bright at night for me, and so I cover the display with a CD cover, and if I need to know the time I reach out and tap the button which activates the "voice-plus" feature. The voice also speaks before the alarm goes off, saying "Good morning, it is 6 o'clock A.M." (Or whatever.) I wish it didn't do this. It startled me the first couple of times it did it. But it is not a major drawback for me, and if it was there is a button that switches the "voice-plus" off. ("Plus what?" one wonders.) A more serious annoyance is that there are only 5 pre-sets, one less than the ICF-CD803. It's not a disqualifier, but one wonders "Why only 5?" All-in-all, I'm very pleased with my ICF-CD873, especially if the buttons continue to function past 2008.
Good looks & great sound.......2002-12-30
I gave my (cheaper) Panasonic RC-CD500 away (and she likes it) then purchased this Sony ICF-CD 873. I like this one better! Sounds great & looks good.
The could-have-been a contender.......2000-10-10
This product would have been excellent, except for two MAJOR flaws.
1. The radio reception is terrible, it barely pulls in stations that work great on several other radios I have. Thus, this unit is more of a CD player than a radio.
2. When I turn the radio or CD on there is a noticable background hum. I do not know if this is because this unit is defective, or what. I tried doing some troubleshooting (tried other locations, sockets, let it burn in a bit) but no luck.
Rating (Terrible) 0
<--> 100 (Excellent) Sound quality: 90 Looks: 90 Conectivity: 10 Radio reception: 10 Features: 94 Usability: 93 Performance: 10 Overall: 19
Summary: Even if this unit did not hum, the radio reception is not good enough to make me want to keep the unit. It only pullin in really strong stations without static. Otherwise the reception is just too poor.
Very Good Sound BUT LACKS SEVERAL CONVENIENCE FEATURES.......2000-07-12
What it lacks is a remote control for this price, a battery back-up, the annoyance of waking you up if there is a short power shortage, the inconvenient place the button is for DST it can easily be hit when you wake up, and the inconvenience of setting anything on this when is dark room.
