Customer Reviews:
Getting closer , but no cigar. Poor quality parts.......2007-07-01
I really did my research on which Kaito model I thought would be best for my situation, before buying.I was looking for a radio that was compact,well-built ,sturdy, and had a lot of charging options. This was the model that seemed to be the one for me.The flashlight/LED on this model is bright enough to help out in an emergency situation. I have no problems with the windup crank-it seems well-built enough for me.I haven't tried the solar charging yet, but I did charge up the internal battery, and everything was working fine-for awhile. The housing is sturdy and looks nice. The controls are nice and compact. It pulls in quite a lot of shortwave stations, which was mildly suprising to me.
The antenna is long and pulls in those weak staions.
The two things that I don't like about this radio are:1) Once the antenna becomes bent, it can break off easily after that. The replacement antenna is $10.00 plus shipping, and I think that Kaito should get it together and offer the replacement antenna online for a cheaper price, on their website. This is one of the main problems with buying goods that are made overseas.Give us consumers a way to purchase replacement parts easily online Kaito!
2)The volume control has deteriorated to the point of not being able to give me a lowered volume without a ton of noise now-(which is extremely distracting).I noticed this problem after buying it, but didn't think much about it then.It just got worse. It might be OK for emergency situation usage, but if you want to rely on it for more than that-forget about it.
Good Emergency Radio.......2006-11-03
Emergency radios came into vogue during the Y-2000 "crisis". Some are pretty decent radios, and some are junk. The Kaito KA008L emergency radio is better than most radios of this type. Kaito provided a digital display, which is basically a frequency counter. The tuner itself is analog, not digital. As emergency radios go, the tuner is pretty good. You get basic AM and FM, and four shortwave bands. The radio has a hand crank dynamo, which will allow you to charge NiMH batteries (not supplied with the radio). Also, a built-in solar array will charge the batteries in direct sunlight. Room light apparently isn't strong enough to charge the batteries. In addition, you get an l.e.d. flashlight built in. Finally, we have an emergency radio with an alarm clock. All this is in a small size, with a sturdy carrying handle. The radio ran for nearly 40 hours on a freshly charged set of 2500 mAh batteries. I did not test how long the flashlight would last. A wall-wart is included, making it possible to recharge the batteries in the radio. Of course, if power is out, the wall recharger won't help much. That's where the solar array or hand crank comes into use. The fit and finish of this radio is average or better. Not much shiny chrome, but the case and handle feel solid and sturdy. At this price point (I paid about$45) I would recommend this emergency radio to campers, hikers, or anyone interested in owning a self-powered emergency radio.
High sensitivity, solar and dynamo works great !.......2006-05-17
Owe this radio for a while and it still works great on the 4 way power, the shortwave is great and I use the flashlight often..
It is a good radio to buy.
