The preamplifier is "control central" for any system. It provides source selection, adds gain when needed, lets you adjust levels, balance, and other parameters, and sends the signal to the power amp. This signal will be multiplied hundreds of times, so the preamp must be extremely quiet and distortion-free. If the preamp changes the signal in any way, the change will be magnified big time when you finally hear it!
