Amazon.com Product Description
Harman Kardon's affordable AVR 135 6.1 audio/video surround receiver decodes an array of 5.1- and 6.1-channel surround formats, bringing you great sound from many sources. The AVR 135 features a discrete-output amplifier that pumps 6 channels of high-current (+/-25 amps), ultrawide-bandwidth power: 6 x 40 watts into 8 ohms, 20 to 20,000 Hz with less than 0.07 percent THD. The receiver uses state-of-the-art 192 kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converters and a high-power Cirrus 32-bit DSP processor for clear, dynamic presentations from music and movies.

Take a closer look at the AVR 135's connections. You can also view the unit's front panel and remote control in detail.
Surround sound features include traditional Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS surround, including 6.1 DTS-ES Discrete, DTS-ES Matrix, and DTS Neo:6 (Cinema 6.1/5.1 and Music 6.1/5.1). You also get Harman's proprietary Logic 7 audio for enhanced multichannel reproduction from both matrix-encoded and 2-channel recordings.

As part of its broad video hookup options, the receiver offers wide-bandwidth, HDTV-compatible component-video inputs and an array of digital and analog audio connections, including multiple coaxial and optical digital audio inputs and outputs. It sports both analog and digital front-panel inputs, and 6-channel direct audio inputs to accommodate a DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, or universal player.

The AVR 135's cutting-edge technologies also include triple-crossover bass management and automatic digital input polling. Digital input polling is a Harman Kardon feature that detects whether the selected audio source is digital or analog in nature and automatically configures the receiver to provide the required audio output. This means you won't have to manually switch the receiver's input from digital to analog when changing from, say, an SACD-capable DVD player's coaxial digital output (for Dolby/DTS) and its multichannel analog outputs (to appreciate the SACD audio). You can switch the feature off when desired.

Triple-crossover bass-management system lets you choose from multiple crossover frequencies for the front L/R, center, surround L/R, and surround back L/R speakers. Most receivers and DVD players have far more limited crossover filtering or none at all. Moreover, you can set different speaker-size configurations for different AVR 135 input sources according to your needs.

You get a high-quality FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets and a Listener Preference System that lets you specify a surround mode according to the program source. You can also set speaker-channel levels for each program source and DSP format (for example, the subwoofer level can be set differently for multichannel movie viewing and 2-channel CD music listening).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money spent.......2007-06-13

This was my first ever receiver and so it was overwhelming figuring it all out. Even as a novice I was able to set it up not once but twice, (I moved). The second time I had a more knowledge about the connections so it was way easier to set up. I agree that the connecting the speaker is hard, but I don't do it often so I didn't mind.

I am sure that the receiver can do way more than I use it for, but I am happy. It has so many sound options, which I don't use, but since the sound comes out good,I haven't tried to really figure it all out.

The unit has cable connections in the front, so I can easily connect my laptop, mp3 player, dvr as well as other electronic equipment. The lights on the front panel dims, so I can turn it down or off while watching a movie.

One thing I don't like is the remote doesn't light up, so using the remote during a movie is a small hassle. I love the macro function on the remote. I can turn on or off tv, dvd and amplifier by pressing one button, (there are four programmable macro button). This makes up for the lights missing on the remote.

The unit does get very hot, which makes me nervous, once it even shut off for a while. But that only happened once a year ago, now I keep it properly ventilated.

5 out of 5 stars it ROCKS!!.......2007-02-25

The only thing that I was concerned about prior to purchasing this reciever is the low wattage rating...that went away as soon as i set it up. The Boston Accoustic tower speakers rock on. I love the reciever.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for those with a 6.1 system and 7.1 outputs.......2007-01-06

This may seem like a strange selling feature, but I have a HTPC at home with a choice of 5.1 or 7.1 output. But my well tuned home theater speaker setup is 6.1. Obviously I didn't want to lose the back channel by going 5.1, but at the same time I didn't want to remount and reconfigure my system for 7.1.

Enter the AVR 135. It has 7.1 analog inputs (perfect for my 7.1 sound card), and it combines the SBL and SBR channels to one SB channel. At first I was a little apprehensive about such a configuration, but with numerous audio tests and a little calibration with my PC, it sounded quite well.

I've now owned this product for a year or so and it has served all of my needs. The only drag is that it's hooked up to an "all high def" system, and the on-screen display will only display to a standard def input (S-Video or Composite). The on-screen display is absolutely necessary for calibrating the speakers, but most High Def TVs have at least one legacy input ... you'll find yourself devoting it to the OSD for this device (which works perfectly fine).

4 out of 5 stars Harman kardon AVR 135 6.1.......2006-02-24

This is a very complex receiver and definately not for the beginner that i am...i found it very diffucult to set up and had to ask a friend to come to my house and complete the process.
Very happy with the sound and the HK speakers.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent value.......2006-01-15

I bought this receiver to go with my new Panasonic plasma TV and so far I'm pretty happy. Plenty of connections for all your AV equipment, including three digital inputs.

Two complaints:
- As mentioned by other reviewers, the speaker connections on the back are somewhat hard to get to.
- It takes the unit a few seconds to start up, which my Harmony univeral control doesn't like. After turning the AV135 on, the remote tries to switch the input, which the AV135 frequently ignores because it's still busy initializing.
