Amazon.com Product Description
The JVC RX-7040B is an advanced 5.1 home theater receiver with the power and features to get your entertainment room moving and shaking. The unit has power where it counts: 110 watts per channel delivered to each of six surround sound speakers. Or, if your intention is to set up a basic two-speaker system, the RX-7040B has you covered, as well; it can deliver 130 watts per channel in a two-speaker configuration. Because JVC engineered the RX-7040B with an eye on the future, the unit supports DVD multichannel audio for connection to existing and future multichannel sources such as DVD audio. A high-performance Motorola 160 MIPS (million instructions per second) 24/48-bit DSP delivers sound with incredible clarity and realism. A digital acoustics processor (DAP) offers seven multichannel preset sound fields and eight two-channel presets, so you can simulate a wide range of listening environments.

These days, a dizzying array of digital sound encoding formats make it difficult to know if you're getting the most out of your home theater. Luckily, the RX-7040B has all the bases covered. Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, DTS NEO:6, DTS Discrete 6.1, Matrix 6.1 and Dolby Prologic II decoders are all embedded in the unit so you can experience your DVDs and other digital media the way they were meant be experienced. A virtual surround feature lets you playback 6.1 channels (6 channels plus the mid, low-range channel) without adding a surround back speaker. If you only want to run two speakers with the RX-7040B, the "3D-Phonic" virtual surround sound feature simulates dramatic home theater sound with just two front speakers.

Connections abound on the back of the RX-7040B. Video inputs include three composite video inputs, three S-video inputs and two component video inputs. Video outputs include three composite video outputs, two S-video outputs and one component output. For those with multiple video sources, the unit supports high bandwidth component video switching compatible with standard definition TV and all high-definition TV formats. The audio department includes assignable digital inputs (three optical, one coaxial) that you can designate to any digital source. There's also one optical digital output. Analog audio connections include five inputs and two outputs. Speaker connections feature banana plugs for easy connections and there is a set of second room speaker terminals.

An included multibrand A/V remote control operates other brands of cable set-top boxes, VCRs, TVs, DVD players, and satellite receivers. And because video still hasn't killed the radio star, the RX-7040B features an AM/FM tuner with 15 AM and 30 FM station presets.

I actually don't own this but I have read many reviews of many receivers.jvc receivers are decent receivers although they don't have as much power as some more expensive receivers(harman kardon, marantz)so if you need to play loud in a largeish room you might consider getting a HK,marantz, nad etc.Ignore the review below-if your tv doesn't have an s-vid input you would just use the rca vid input(duh!)or antenna input using a switcher that you could buy at crutchfield, ebay,or avtoolbox-most tv's have an rca vid input and most receivers have rca vid in and outs.As of this moment most receivers don't have upconverting so this is not a reason to give the jvc 2 stars. The jvc does have cc conversion which should make 2ch listening to cd's better--the jvc receivers probably work better in a smaller room,or if you are not going to play to loud-also jvc receivers may work better with smaller speakers or speakers rated 8-16 ohms since the power drops to about 30w(according to reviews)when using all five channels.Once agin if you need more power try hk,marantz, nad etc.

2 out of 5 stars Uh-oh no video conversion (composite to s-video/component).......2005-02-21

i got this receiver a few weeks ago and hooked it up with no problems. unfortunately, i did not have long enough composite cables to hook up my vcr's. when i got the cables i found out that the receiver will not allow the vcr's video signal to be displayed through the s-video connection to the tv. in fact, all the video in signals have to use the same type of connection for the receiver to send the signal to the tv. this means that if i had a component video capable tv and an s-video only dvd player, i would not be able to view the video from the dvd player. i called JVC and was told that none of their receivers have video conversion. considering that i own a $20 switch that is able to perform this function (plays composite video through s-video connection), it is unacceptable that all of JVC's receivers are unable.

NOTE: i highly commend JVC customer service. i called on a Sunday and got a human in less that 2 minutes of dialing the number. i got straight answers and the agents were polite. too bad about the receiver.
