Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Simplify your home theater as you boost its processing abilities and audio power with Denon's AVR-985S. The audio/video receiver provides 7 channels of amplification to drive all the primary speakers in a 7.1 surround sound system (front left, center, and right speakers, left/right side speakers, and left/right surround speakers, along with a ".1" low-frequency effects channel for a subwoofer). It's perfectly compatible with 5.1 and 6.1 speaker configurations. Use it as a surround-processing preamplifier with stand-alone power amps or enjoy the receiver's 100 watts per channel amplifier (into 8 ohms from 20 to 20,000 Hz with no more than .05 percent THD), which features high-current, discrete output devices for all channels.

You'll never be at a loss for creative surround algorithms, irrespective of your listening source. The receiver's onboard 7.1-channel surround processing includes Dolby Digital Surround EX, DTS, DTS 96/24 5.1 for DVD-Video, DTS ES Discrete 6/1, ES Matrix 6.1 and Neo: 6 Cinema and Music modes, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx (for cinema, music, and games). Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing is the first technology to offer a choice of processing traditional stereo music and movie content into room-filling 6.1 or 7.1 channels.

The AVR-985S's auto setup and room equalization functions help you achieve ideal sound for your room. With the accompanying microphone placed at your listening position, powerful 32-bit floating-point DSP automatically and accurately analyzes, adjusts and sets the speaker configurations for your system. Also, the AVR-985S analyzes and adjusts the real-world frequency response of your speakers in the room with an 8-band parametric equalizer. The microphone is a specially designed, high-performance omnidirectional mic with a heavy-duty base to suppress vibrations for accurate analyses.

Denon's Power Amp Assigned function heightens the AVR-985S's flexibility, letting you enjoy music or video in a fully-powered, discrete 2-channel second zone. You'll wonder how you ever lived without true 2-source, 2-zone functionality with discrete power, source select, and volume control for each zone. IR remote in/out terminals offer integrated system control, and the receiver also includes serial ports for RS-232C protocol control as well as assignable 12V trigger controls for use with system automation.

The AVR-985S owes its superlative sound quality to premium digital-audio technologies like SHARC 32-bit floating-point DSP processing from Analog Devices. For simplicity of video connectivity and switching, the AVR-985S includes video up-conversion for composite and/or S-video sources to high-bandwidth component-video with no compromise in video quality.

The receiver performs 24 bit, 96 kHz analog-to-digital conversion on all stereo analog inputs except the multichannel analog jacks, while Analog Devices 24 bit/192 kHz high-resolution DACs on all 8 channels ensures premium playback sound. Adjustable high- and low-pass crossovers (40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 200, and 250 Hz) let you tailor the sound to suit your speakers and your listening space.

The AVR-985S features 3 assignable sets of component-video inputs and 1 set of monitor outputs (all with 100 MHz bandwidth). You get 7 sets each of composite- and S-video inputs, a set of 7.1 external wide-bandwidth (100 kHz) inputs for multichannel formats such as DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, 7 assignable digital inputs (5 optical, 2 coaxial), 2 optical digital outputs, and a total of 11 analog inputs, including a phono input for your turntable.

The receiver uses a digitally regulated volume control with .5 dB increment adjustments and a step range of -80 to +15.

Amazon.com Product Description

Power up your home theater with the Denon AVR-987 surround sound receiver, which offers seven discrete amplifier channels (110 watts apiece, for 770 watts of total power). This includes for the surround back channel speakers to give you more clearly defined sound localization at the rear for 6.1-channel surround sources such as DTS-ES Discrete 6.1/Matrix 6.1/NEO:6 and Dolby Digital EX. The power amp circuits have been designed to reproduce exceptionally high sound quality with a wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. Denon's multi-room entertainment system feature lets you select different audio sources for listening in different rooms, and the AVR-987 offers two zones. It's XM Radio ready (optional XM tuner required) and offers XM-HD surround sound. It's also compatible with Denon's ASD-1R control dock for iPods. It features a 56-station AM/FM/XM random preset memory tuning.

The AVR-987 is equipped with two HDMI inputs as well as one HDMI output, allowing the selection of multiple digital video signals (up to 1080p). The HDMI terminals also accept multi-channel digital audio input and the input signals can be output via amps. It also includes a video up/down conversion function that allows the receiver to be connected to the video monitor via a single cable regardless of the video input signal's format:

With Denon's Auto Setup feature, you can confirm speaker phase, assess the size of all your speakers, measure speaker-to-listener distances, and balance speaker levels. With the included DM-S205 microphone placed in your favorite listening position, Auto Setup uses a test tone generator and proprietary programming to precisely balance speaker levels and fine-tune the delay settings for each speaker. The result is optimized system performance for your specific home theater room.

You can customize the performance of this receiver to suit your home theater and enhance operating ease. Adjustments are easy to make via a dialog format on the fluorescent display on the front panel, and these customized settings are then stored, for each source input and surround mode, in a personal memory setting. Put yourself in the middle of your favorite concert hall and music environments with Denon's DSP acoustic environment simulation modes, which include jazz club, rock arena, video game, virtual surround, and mono movie. Other features include:

Cinema Equalizer
The sound from movie sources recorded in Dolby Digital, DTS, or other formats emphasizes high-frequency range due to a theater's front speakers being placed behind the movie screen. If this sound is reproduced in the home theater without correction, the high-frequency range is too strong. This Denon receiver's Cinema Equalizer feature corrects these high-frequency components so that the sound is clearer and easier to listen to when using Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital EX and DTS surround modes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Amplifier.......2007-03-07

This unit will meet most anyones expectations for a powerful HT experience. I agree with the other reviewer that setup etc.. is somewhat tasking. The unit has virtually any feature you might want. The downside and warning to anyone is for you not to expect this to do up conversion as you would expect from a dvd player. Some might assume that it means it will take an input and convert it up to 1080p/i. It won't. It simply will take signals and allow them all to be transmitted on an HDMI cable. It will carry a 1080p signal however. Because I think the advertising is misleading and setup could be easier I give it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Brute of an amp with highly sophisticated front end.......2006-12-26

Denon is near the top of consumer electronics, and this shows why. The 7.1 amp section blows away Sony, Pioneer, etc.: cleaner and more detailed because, essentially, it delivers more current to the speakers. On top of this is a very sophisticated A/V control center: pre-amp, tuner, decoder, etc. Multiple inputs (HDMI for the vid fans, plus RIAA--MM and high-output MC--for the vinyl crowd) allow extremely flexible systems and effortless switching. The included microphone helps calibrate multiple-speaker systems, even from different listening locations. The only drawback is that with controls this complex, there is something of a learning-curve: many buttons have several duties, and it takes a while to understand them. Dollar-for-dollar the Pioneer/Onkyo/Sony lobby will beat most manufacturers feature-for-feature; but they all sound funny. This Denon is a solid performer and will beat any of them.
