The Quad-Field function projects four sound fields into the home theater--a "presence" field in the front and three "surround" fields in the left rear, right rear, and center rear surround speakers, resulting in a powerfully realistic 3-D soundscape. The Cinema DSP's 14 surround programs include standard and enhanced modes for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo: 6, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Discrete 6.1, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoders, along with several custom options for movies, music, and video games. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha's exclusive technology that lets you enjoy multichannel music or movie sound through ordinary headphones, and a Neural Surround decoder that separates and localizes all 6.1 channels with greater clarity than ever before to create an astoundingly detailed soundstage.

As with many superior home theater receivers, the HTR-5950 is capable of component video up-conversion. This function takes S-video and composite signals and converts them into component signals to ensure a high-quality picture on your digital TV from any source. No more switching inputs according to which source you're using--rather, they can all go through the same component connection.

What really makes the HTR-5950 special, however, are the extras, such as a compressed music enhancer that improves the sound quality of MP3s and other compressed formats and a specially designed terminal that accommodates separately sold iPod docks, such as the Yamaha YDS-10. Plus, the HTR-5950 not only includes a standard AM/FM tuner, but is also XM satellite radio ready. All you need is a separately sold XM antenna and a subscription to XM satellite radio and you're set. And audiophiles can be assured of the best possible sound when listening to XM radio thanks to its utilization of the Neural Surround mode.

Additional features include an audio delay that adjusts to poorly synched dialogue, a selectable nine-band subwoofer crossover, a sleep timer, a front-panel mini-jack input that connects to portable media players, a night listening mode that lowers the volume during loud passages, and a sleek silver housing.

With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the HTR-5950 can accommodate a host of digital sources such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite systems, and much more. The rear panel options include three optical digital inputs and one output; one coaxial digital input; three component video inputs and one output; three S-video inputs and two outputs (one assignable); three composite video inputs and two outputs (one assignable); and two analog audio inputs and one output. Also present are a 5.1 multichannel input and a set of front-panel composite A/V inputs for quick connections.

Excellent Receiver!!.......2007-04-04

I bought this receiver specifically to replace a Sony 5.1 AV receiver I purchased just a few years ago. This is the second Yamaha receiver I have in my home now and the sound fields far surpass what Sony, Pioneer, or normal consumer brands offer. This unit performs video signal switching, allowing me to "upconvert" a few S-video connections to a component monitor output. This works well.

I noticed a large audio improvement after replacing my older Sony receiver when listening to DVDs. I also recommend the 6-channel audio mode for music.

This purchase should last me a few more years and again demonstrates the quality Yamaha brings to the AV market. I do recommend this receiver for the average home enthusiast.

Nice Amp.......2007-01-05

For less than $300 this is an excellent amp with a good remote. All the AV features you'll need for home theatre use and not difficult to setup if you follow the manual. I'm no audiofile but unless you want to spend $1500 and up for fancy speakers systems this should be all you'll need. I have it hooked up to a set of JBL SCS180-S surround 6-1 speakers and sound is great...amp, speakers and cables for for a little over $500.

This is a great A/V receiver and an amazing bargain: it compares favorably with other units I looked at up to the $700 price range. The one feature it lacks, HDMI switching and up-conversion, is often problematic anyway, because the industry is in the middle of changing to the new 1.3 HDMI standard. In any case, the Yamaha does a fine job of component switching and composite to component conversion. The optional iPod dock works well (but it took me a while to figure out that it is necessary to switch the remote control from AMP to SOURCE using the side slide toggle before pressing the DISPLAY button to activate the on-screen display; except for this omission, the users' guide is pretty well written).
