Amazon.com Product Description
Audiophiles with a yen for power need look no further than Harmon Kardon's AVR-7200, the company's most powerful receiver ever. The unit features an ultrawide-bandwidth amplifier that directs low-frequency sound to the right destination regardless of your speakers or other inputs (including DVD-Audio and SACD) due to its comprehensive bass management system with triple crossover selection. The system also offers multiroom options, including assignable rear-channel amplifiers and an A-Bus-ready port, which allows complete remote-room control and amplification with only a single Cat 5 wire connection.

The AVR-7200, which includes an AM/FM tuner, is primed for a surround-sound setup, with 7.1 channels delivering 100 watts of power each. It offers decoding for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic I and II, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 95 dB. It also offers a host of other sound processing options, including Logic 7 Cinema, Music, and Enhance modes, which extract the maximum surround information from the source to create a superior listening experience.

Other features include Neo:6, Dolby 3 Stereo, and Hall and Theater Modes, along with VMAx, which uses proprietary processing to create an open, spacious sound field even when only two front speakers are available. In addition, the AVR-7200 offers MP3 decoding, letting you listen to the latest music directly from compatible computers or playback devices.

For the ultimate in flexibility, the AVR-7200 features connections for five video devices, all with both composite and S-Video inputs. Two additional audio inputs are available, and the six digital inputs make the AVR-7200 capable of handling all the latest digital audio sources. For compatibility with HDTV video sources and progressive-scan DVD players, the AVR-7200 features two-input, wide-bandwidth, low-crosstalk component video switching. The front panel offers coaxial and optical digital inputs and outputs for direct connection to digital recorders, along with analog audio/video connections that may be switched to outputs for use with portable recorders. Two video recording outputs, preamp-out, and a color-coded eight-channel input with complete digital bass management make the AVR-7200 virtually future-ready, with everything needed to accommodate tomorrow's new formats right onboard.

The receiver comes with a preprogrammed remote with an LCD display, and carries a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

Amazon.com Product Description

Digital audio meets digital video with the Harman Kardon AVR 740 7.2-channel A/V receiver. Internally, the receiver is engineered for elite sonic performance, with an amplifier section that delivers seven channels of high-current (+/-60 amps), wide-bandwidth amplification--85 watts into 8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with less than 0.07 percent total harmonic distortion--in addition to employing state-of-the-art 192 kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converters. The AVR 740 is loaded from a video perspective as well, with DCDi by Faroudja video processing that flawlessly upscales all incoming video to 720p or 1080i high definition and outputs it through an HDMI jack. The resulting high-definition playback makes the AVR 740 an ideal centerpiece for any home entertainment system with an HD television, or for households looking to upgrade to HD in the near future.

Take a closer look at the AVR 740's connections. You can also view the unit's front panel in detail.
On the audio side, the receiver offers such features as direct HDMI connection to compatible DVD-Audio players, USB playback from compatible digital audio sources, and XM satellite radio compatibility. The HDMI connection lets listeners enjoy the latest multichannel audio formats in their full glory, while the USB connection is ideal for such devices as portable MP3 players and PCs. Meanwhile, the XM radio interface--which requires an XM antenna module and a subscription to the satellite radio service--brings the next generation of radio programming into your home.

Another feature unique to the AVR 740 is a second subwoofer output, which creates an even bigger, more realistic home theater soundscape than before. If booming bass is your biggest audio priority, the AVR 740 is a must.

The receiver also offers a wide range of digital and matrix surround modes, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx (which provides an expansive, full-range 7.1-channel program from any stereo or 5.1-channel source), DTS, DTS ES Discrete and Matrix, DTS 96/24, and DTS Neo:6. Listeners will also delight in the Virtual Speaker mode, which creates an enveloping sound field when fewer than six speakers are available, and Dolby Headphone, which provides a much more open and realistic presentation through a pair of ordinary headphones.

Adding to the receiver's versatility are such sound-enhancing features as Harman International's exclusive Logic 7 processing in both 5.1 and 7.1 versions, which creates a wider, more enveloping field environment and more defined fly-overs and pans; and VMAx, which uses proprietary processing to create an open, spacious sound field even when only two front speakers are available. The receiver's extensive bass management options, meanwhile, include four separate crossover groupings.

Unlike many surround receivers, the AVR 740 is equipped for extensive multiroom use. In addition to offering assignable surround back amplifier channels, the receiver invites the listener to enjoy a separate source in a remote zone. Essentially, this means one family member can watch a movie in the living room while a second family member listens to a CD in the bedroom--both through the AVR 740. The receiver, which is A-Bus/Ready (enables remote component and speaker control), also comes with a Zone II remote control.

Other receiver essentials include high-bandwidth, HDTV-compatible component video switching with assignable inputs, an onscreen menu and display system with the choice of a blue or black background screen, and compatibility with the Bridge, a Harman Kardon device that works with most iPod models. The Bridge lets you operate your iPod from across the room using the AVR 740's remote control, which has been preprogrammed with several iPod control codes. As a result, listeners can select tracks and navigate most iPod functions, charge the unit, or even view track information on the AVR 740's LED display or onscreen menu.

The receiver's variety of audio and video connections include the aforementioned HDMI inputs; three wide-bandwidth, HDTV-compatible component video inputs and one output; four S-video and four composite video inputs (two outputs each); and three analog audio inputs and two outputs. Digital audio options, meanwhile, include three coaxial and three optical audio inputs,. Other jacks range from color-coded six- and eight-channel direct audio inputs to a pair of video recording outputs to 7.1-channel preamp outputs that accommodate a DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, or universal player.

Anyone that's ever suffered from technology overload when setting up his or her audio/video system can rest easy with the AVR 740. The unit's intuitive onscreen menus coordinate with the system's EzSet/EQ function to provide automated system calibration and room equalization, thus greatly simplifying installation. The resulting speaker output compensates for the effects of a room's acoustics to improve the overall system performance. In tandem with EzSet/EQ--which comes with its own microphone--the AVR 740 also includes a full set of manual configuration settings for those who wish to custom-trim their system even further.

Lastly, the AVR 740 comes with an AM/FM tuner with 30 station presets. The AVR 740 measures 17.31 by 6.5 by 17.06 inches (W x H x D) and carries a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box
AVR 740 receiver, two remote controls, power cord, AM and FM antennas, EzSet/EQ microphone, user's manual.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great sound. Good build quality. Great price.......2007-06-15

I bought this refurbished from eBay store of Harman Audio with full 2 year warranty for just $810 shipped. I got the unit that looked and behaved like it is new. Unlike the other reviewer, I actually like the remote. I already had a Harmony H659. I like this one even better. It lights up just by tilting the remote. This one is also a Harmony remote so I could just set it up the same way. I have just HDMI going to the TV and have not had any problems. I just wish it had more than 2 HDMI inputs.

Sound quality wise, this receiver is awesome. It can do Logic 7 from 5.1 channel PCM signals. It has two subwoofer pre-outs. I hope to get a second sub soon! It can do near and far field EQ for all 7 speakers. The display is big and bright (can be dimmed) and readable.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute best! You WILL love this reciever........2007-02-06

I purchased my Harmon Kardon about 3 months ago and I am honestly amazed. I have owned everything from packaged small home theaters to huge component surround sound systems - I previously owned a Sony 7000ES, which was a serious piece of equipment, this Harmon Kardon however is even better. Its sound is terrific, its video is fabulous, but the control is insane. This reciever does it all, HK has intuitively designed a reciever that will actually simplify your AV usage / while enhancing it!!! The controller supplied with this unit is unmatched and I mean that UNMATCHED. This reciever has the options for the audio/video philes while it retains its ease of use for some that are less techno savy. If you are thinking of purchasing the Harmon Kardon AVR 745 but are unsure if its worth the price, two words, IT IS!!!

4 out of 5 stars So many Great things, but who was asleep on the 1080P.......2007-01-22

This is one of the best looking Receivers on the market today. It is simply Hot.
The remote is awsome, so easy to use, my wife loves it and it has took the place of 5 remotes, the 2nd remote is a plus for working the AB1 in the four other rooms.
The receiver has plenty of inputs and outputs of every sort. The AVR745 is A-Bus ready, this works great, would not have a receiver without it. Also purchased the ABH4 with four AB1. It is easy to install and so easy to operate in the four zones I have. The sound is first class with A-Bus, also love the fact that you can switch from one source to another and not affect the source playing in the main listening area.

Now for the bad news, this receiver will not pass a 1080P signal through it, even with it set to bypass, more bad news, this is not a software issue, so you will have to bypass the HDMI on the AVR745 and go straight to your monitor for video, but of course if your not into HD or Blu-Ray or don't have a 1080P TV, this will be of no problem to you. Someone must of been asleep on this one!
I am somewhat upset with HK for dropping the ball on this, but I guess for now I will use this receiver and wait for them to release a improved AVR745 or newer model that is 1080P capable.
There still is alot of positive features and things to say about the AVR745, my kids love the ipod feature, and of course the power and looks and the list goes on.

3 out of 5 stars Has potential if Component Video out problem is fixed........2006-06-22

Howdy
Negatives
1 Don't like the remotes at all. An MX700 or such would have been way better in IMHO than these two. Neither of which cuts the mustard on it's own or together. What were they thinking.
2. Ergonomically challenged after setup. Can't change volume on any channel on the fly. Did I mention the remotes?
3. There is a problem when using Component video out with Faroudja processing engaged. The video image is shifted way left and the size of the picture is affected. The picture looks great but has the above mentioned problem. I experienced this using 3 seperate devices. A Dwin CRT and Sony HS51 projectors and a rear projection HDTV. The only other person who has this receiver, that I'm aware of, has the same problem when using a Panasonic Plasma. This should be correctable by Harman but we'll see how long it takes.
4. Oh yeah, did I mention the Remotes.

Positives
1. Picture looks GREAT when using HDMI out with Faroudja processing.
2. Sounds GREAT after running the Auto EQ setup and it was easy to do. I'm using seperate amps for the front speakers.
3. Love Logic7 with music.

Bottom line as I see it.

If you don't need component video out and like to set and forget, this might just be for you. Once and if Component video out is fixed and you get adequate remote [of course that will add to the cost unless you already have one] you and I might be willing to suffer the ergonomic shortcomings.

I don't think anyone who's up on remote control technology will think HK's choice is an intelligent one. I mean AFAIK, they had Harmony design a remote just for this unit and it's cute and has a cool feature in that it lights up when you touch it but it's seriously ergonomically challenged.

Rating would be a 4.5 considering Picture and Sound Quality if the Component out problem didn't exist.

I have not tried the internal amps on my front 3 Quad ESL63 speakers.
