Nakamichi AV3S Dolby Pro Logic Receiver

Nakamichi AV3S Dolby Pro Logic Receiver

Product Description
Amazon.com Review
With the AV3S Dolby Pro Logic Receiver, Nakamichi affirms its longstanding reputation for quality sound, bringing 70 watts of front-channel power and several winning design features to an affordable audio-video (AV) receiver. The clearly laid out AV3S is ready to use in a heartbeat, with all features clearly indicated on both its solid front panel and the supplied remote control (which operates both Nakamichi CD and cassette decks).

The Dolby Pro Logic-equipped AV3S pumps an impressive 70 watts per channel (wpc) to the front speakers and 55 wpc to the rear. The system employs Nakamichi's Harmonic Time Alignment technology on each of the four powered channels to minimize distortion. As with all Pro Logic systems, the AV3S derives its surround program from any two-channel audio input, which the receiver independently processes and routes to left, center, right, and surround speakers. It wouldn't be a true AV receiver without a subwoofer output, though, and the inclusion of one on the AV3S nicely augments the Pro Logic surround and standard music playback.

Independent level adjustments for the center- and rear-channel outputs and a variable delay time for the surround channels (from 15 to 30 milliseconds in 5-ms increments) help facilitate setup. But the star of this show is the sound quality. The receiver drives large speakers to ear-splitting levels with power to spare, succumbing to neither compression nor distortion. We found the sound clear and well-balanced, inviting longer listening and more volume. However, most of your listening will probably be at reasonable sound levels, and the AV3S excelled here as well. Aided by a bass- and treble-boosting "loudness" switch, the receiver delivered clear and full-bodied low-level sound--an under-appreciated trait of a quality amplifier.

The AV3S is perfect for audio enthusiasts who have a growing interest in home theater but want an affordable, full-featured integrated receiver.

4 out of 5 stars still sterling after 2 years.......2002-10-05

It would be nice if I could decode the latest digital video standards, but that's about it on complaints. Considering the extremely reasonable price, this is simply the best receiver I've ever had.

It offers astonishingly clear sound (with my 5 ohm Magneplaners and a/d/s/ sub), plus plenty of inputs and outputs, and all around versatility. Simply superb. Even more importantly, whenever I want to do something, I just reach for the analogue buttons and dials and it happens. No perusing the manual. Try that with a Yamaha or Denon.

Note: this receiver is no longer produced. However, the current Nakamichi AV-7 is almost identical (but with more video inputs), and the AV-8 and AV-10 combine extra features (like a built-in crossover and DTS decoding) with the same amazing usability.

The best receiver-family going. Get one, even if you already have a McIntosh or a Mark Levinson. You may be very surprised by which one you actually use.

5 out of 5 stars Poor man's primium stuff.......1999-12-31

I purchased this receiver from Amazon.com at the very reasonable price offered, and have since enjoyed its class of quality and performance. I can confirm other reviewers' opinion of its very clear sound quality and nice looking built. Beyond that I want to say that it's very discriminating to the nature of its source material: good recordings sound fabulous while poorly mixed ones sound intolerably muddy. Several shortcomings nevertheless are present: limited A/V connectivity with only 2 video inputs; a merely moderate current output--perhaps not enough to drive large speakers or low-impedence ones well; somewhat flimsy connectors on back panel requiring careful pluggings and unpluggings. But these reservations are secondary for me given its nice balance of costs and benefits. If you want quality more than newest technology (DTS etc.) this is definitely worthy a try.

5 out of 5 stars Beast of a deal!.......1999-12-03

Wonderful price and quality sound. I was concerned about low price and non-digital. Price reflects a great value NOT a cheap budget line of Nakamichi, super suprise. Power is more than enough, pushing (2)200w Technics & (2)150w Advents. IT MOVES YOU! Super clarity for surround set-up with solid power for all music styles.

4 out of 5 stars You cant go wrong with this great value........1999-11-19

Nakamichi, that says it all. What a great value on an outstanding piece of audio equipment.I unboxed the AV-3s,proceded to unhook my old Luxman receiver and was listening to it shortly after. The AV-3s has all the power one could want and the clearity is just what one would expect from Nakamichi.I am more than pleased with this receiver and would tell anyone shopping for one to check this one out..You cant beat Nakamichi, and you sure cant beat this value. Thank You

5 out of 5 stars A Superior Piece of Musical Equipment.......1999-07-14

Fans of the Nakamichi brand know that their legendary tape decks can record a CD perfectly, accurately preserving the spatial relationships that make listening to a good recording akin to the live experience. This receiver eschews unneeded lights and gadgets to concentrate on producing superior sound. I marvelled at the transparent airy high end and the front-to-back imaging. The remote control, although not lighted, is intelligently designed. If my Sony Dolby Digital receiver is a Nissan Altima, this is a Lexus LS400.
