Pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K 7.1.......2007-06-28
I have this receiver paired with JBL speakers. This is my first surround sound set up and I am pleased with my purchase. It arrived on time and I did not have any shipping problems.
Surprised this is a pioneer product........2007-06-27
I'm not one to write reviews, or especially long drawn out critiques. The short list:
Perks:
More than ample power at most any listening level
THX2, Prologic II, 7.1
HDMI/Comp/Svid/RCA control/conversion
Beautiful
Heavy and sturdy
Cons:
Onscreen menu graphics are odyssey-era
limited front inputs.
Great home theatre receiver for the price..........2007-06-12
Comparing to the alternatives you get a great one for the price. I had the 1015 for 3 years before I upgraded to this to get the HDMI plugs. I use it with 7.1 PolkAudio 7.1 speaker set and active subwoofer (400 watts). Drawbacks: If you use this for a home sound system where I have speakers in the ceilings in all of the main areas and the patio the receiver does not have speaker B outlet in the back and you have to use the rear surround speakers for that purpose (to run it through a speaker switch). The quality you get out mode B is not the same as what you get in Mode A and in mode B your Subwoofer does not work. Second issue is that you don't have on screen menus for set up that is useful for a theater room setup.
Pioneer 1016-TXV A/V Receiver.......2007-05-15
I paired this receiver with a Bose Acoustimass 10 speaker system for excellent sound performance. I especially like the MAcc feature for balancing speaker output levels.
Pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K 7.1 Channel Audio/Video Receiver.......2007-04-13
The best!!! I'm using it with a high-grade Polk surround speakers-the audio quality rocks!

Amazon.com Review
The original lineup of XM2Go products (the MyFi, Tao, and Airware) were the first attempt from either XM or Sirius at providing a truly portable satellite radio receiver. As first-generation products, they offered such tantalizing features as a built-in antenna for receiving live XM broadcasts on the go and the ability to record content for playback later. But, like many first-generation products, these technologies were not yet perfected.
With the Inno, you can receive and play live satellite broadcasts while you're on the go. View larger. |
XM radio offers an incredible selection of music, sports, talk, and more.

Fast-forward a few years: the sequel--the Pioneer Inno--is a radical step forward in both performance, features, and design. (Note: Samsung's Helix is essentially the same model with a slightly different shell.) Boasting a much smaller form factor, slick casing, color screen, and simple user interface, the Inno is the first satellite radio player to make people think twice about buying a straight-up MP3 player.
That's important because not only does the Inno receive all of XM's great content, but it also has built-in storage for your MP3 collection. You can either record up to 50 hours of live XM content into memory, or split it for 25 hours of XM and 25 hours of your personal tunes. Having the option to load a few hundred songs is the perfect antidote for when you're in an area where the Inno can't receive a live signal.
Having some backup entertainment is great, but rest assured that with the Inno, antenna reception is much improved. The Inno's stubby antenna (think a slightly thicker antenna than on your mobile phone) pulled in rock-solid reception all around downtown Seattle, even when placed inside a jacket pocket. Performance will vary depending on your location relative to XM's satellites and network of ground-based repeaters, but it's way better than any of the original XM2Go units. Adding XM's antenna headphones can improve your experience even more.
Thanks to a 10-minute buffer, the Inno is also able to download an entire song from XM, even if you decide to hit record at the end of the song. Connect your player to your PC once you're at home and you'll instantly have the option of downloading that song for keeps via XM's new partnership with Napster.
Another highlight of the interface is the navigation pad. To go directly to a channel, hit the left arrow and then use the virtual keypad to punch in the channel number. If you just want to surf around, hit the right arrow and the display groups the channels by category (Rock, News, Sports, etc.).
The Inno comes with a remote control, a home dock with relevant cables and antenna, nice earbud headphones, software, and more. The rechargeable battery lasted about 4 hours when playing live XM programming, and it will last longer for MP3 playback. An adjustable color screen is another great addition, as it's much easier to see in sunlight and it gives the Inno a high-end feel.

Amazon.com Product Description
Finally, a portable device that lets you play live XM radio content. That's right, wherever you roam the Pioneer Inno lets you tap into more than 150 channels of satellite radio. It's a big step forward for XM radio lovers, but there's more. With the Inno, you can combine live XM radio with your personal digital music collection (MP3s and WMA). This means you can enjoy your own music library while being exposed to all the new music and content that XM radio has to offer.
So how did they get a complete satellite receiver into a device that measures 3.7 x 2.2 x 0.6 inches? By using an advanced satellite/terrestrial internal antenna that allows the device to receive signals from anywhere. The device is light, too, weighing in at just 4.5 ounces. The unit's full-color, 180 x 180 TFT display, as well as a user-friendly interface, make it easy to save and delete content. In addition to making it easy to find the music you want to listen to quickly, the interface lets you build your own playlists right on the device that consist of XM radio content and your own digital music. Another cool feature is the Inno's built-in memory buffer, which allows you to save an entire XM radio song even if you decide to save it in the middle of the song. The Inno's internal memory supports up to 50 hours of saved content.
Featuring a full array of programming -- from talk shows, comedy programs, and live Major League Baseball broadcasts to just about every musical genre from bluegrass to jazz -- XM Radio is the fastest growing satellite radio network in the world. All XM metadata is displayed on the Inno's display, including full song title and artist name, as well as information extras such as stock and sports score tickers. The device also sports a category list for saving and accessing favorite channels.
Another great feature of the Inno is TuneSelect, which alerts you when one of your favorite artists or songs is being played on an XM channel. And last, but certainly not least, the Inno features an integrated wireless FM transmitter so you can beam XM content to any FM radio frequency (with the Pioneer Inno Accessory Car Installation Kit), making it very easy to listen to XM content on any home or car stereo.
The Inno comes with earbuds and everything you need for portable and home use.
Customer Reviews:
The best of both worlds and great reception.......2007-06-21
I love my Inno already! I used the included antenna and even though I work in a large mall like building I get great reception. The device is extremely easy to use and I had it up and running in a matter of minutes. I really like that you can do both pre-recorded XM and your own MP3s/WMAs in your custom playlists. This is a great feature! Like other reviews my only criticism is that recording of a song/channel ceases once you change the channel. I can understand the logic in the recording cutoff feature, which would prevent you from filling up your memory if you forget to turn recording off. It would be nice if at least the song that was in progress of being recorded would finish up before stopping recording. Alternatively it would be great if you could continue to record at least if you switched to listen to your pre-recorded music or MP3s and the device asked you once ever say 5-10 minutes if you really wanted to continue recording.
inno works well but needs a better antenna .......2007-05-13
in our rural area the inno works pretty well. indoors, you have to move it around a little and then hold it still once you've found a good spot. I can usually find a good spot in each room. this is without the docking station antenna. When you use the docking station antenna, the reception is perfect. Outside the inno gets a signal most of the time. Somtimes I have to put it on a different side of my body to keep a signal. Overall i'm pleased with the Inno. I cant wait for the antenna technology to improve. I may try the antenna headphones.
Great music and talk all the time with the Inno.......2007-05-10
I absolutely love my Pink Pioneer Inno XM2go! The reception without the additional antenna is pretty good, but with the included home antenna, it comes in great!
It also works well with the optional satellite antenna headphones and comes with a case that clips on to workout wear easily. Walking has become a pleasure being able to listen to so many varieties of music. I really grilled the salesperson about the reception with the anttenna because the one that came with my Delphi was a piece of junk.
I can't imagine walking without the Inno. The only con for this radio is the battery life. It really only lasts about 48 hours. If it dies, I keep a regular battery powered RIO MP3 player as a backup.
Best XM Unit Ever.......2007-04-14
I just bought because I can't get XM in my new office....I set it up at home or in my car and set it to record my favorite XM Channel 202 then listen to it later. I never miss my favorite boys O&A or Ron & Fez anymore. My home antenna that came with it works great in my house....I doesn't even face a window....and the reception is awesome. Can't wait to take it out and about more so I can see how portable it is. Best purchase I have ever made for Xm.
reception sucks in Portland, OR.......2007-01-23
Ok, we've tried everything. I've stood in our living room with the extra, better antenna, turning it this way and that...and no matter what I do, can't get more than one "bar" of reception. Even better, once we get it pointed *just* the right way, I just have to walk by and the signal cuts out!
Don't even ask about using the antenna built onto the unit! It seems to be worthless. I'm going to try and return my unit.
Buyer beware! The reception is very iffy! --Steve

Amazon.com Product Description
Designed for a small to medium-sized home theater, the Pioneer VSX-516-K delivers robust surround sound to a full-blown 7.1 speaker array, giving your movie soundtracks the rich audio they deserve. The receiver is built around Pioneer's exclusive Hybrid Amplifier design, which drives 100 watts of power into each of its seven channels. Pioneer receivers also include such defining attributes as a digital signal processing (DSP) technique called Sound Retriever, which brings CD-quality audio to compressed formats; nine advanced surround modes; and a high-quality 192 kHz, 24-bit digital-to-analog converter that allows CDs and other audio sources to reach their full potential.
Movie buffs will dig the VSX-516-K's multiple surround decoders, which include DTS-ES Discrete, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo:6, Dolby Digital EX, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx. In addition, you don't need to buy a full 7.1 speaker setup to use the VSX-516-K out of the box. Not only does it support 5.1 and 6.1 systems, but you can also use the two surround-back amplifiers to drive the main front left and right speakers, giving you an extra 200 watts up front. It's the perfect setup for music and movie fans who want a combination of power and versatility.
The VSX-516-K also includes a number of audio extras, including a dialogue enhancement function, a midnight listening mode that suppresses the volume during particularly loud passages (ideal for households with kids), an AM/FM tuner, and a virtual surround back mode that makes it sound as though you own rear surround speakers even when you don't.
With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the VSX-516-K can accommodate a ton of digital sources, such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite receivers, and more. The rear panel options include three digital inputs (two coaxial and one optical), two component video inputs and one outputs, three composite inputs and one output, a 5.1-channel input, and a subwoofer preamp output.
The receiver measures 16.56 by 6.25 by 13.88 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:
Easy and it works.......2007-05-12
Easy to set up, anyway you want. First I did it with 3 speakers, now it is hooked up to 5. It was simple to reprogram the surround sound from 3 to 5 speakers.
Handles the Sound End.......2007-02-15
This entry level A/V receiver does a fine job of powering my home theater 7.1 speaker setup. It has ample power to make the Infinity Primus Theater Pack(5.0) plus Primus 360 fronts and Sony SA-W700 subwoofer sing. No apparent distortion at any sound level I can bear! Only minus on speaker set-up is that all "small" speakers must share same crossover point to subwoofer. Has one digital input with a multitude of sound effects. Handles digital input decoding automatically and well. Also has 5.1 analog inputs for SACD. All-in-all a lot of bang for the buck!
Best $100 ever spent........2007-01-16
This is a great little receiver. At the price I paid it's untouchable. I wasn't even planning on buying a receiver but for the price I paid plus a $20 gift card, I couldn't resist. Besides, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade the older Sony I was using that was relying on my DVD player's DD and DTS decoding. I was reluctant because I had not done any research but I figured dirt cheap entry level cira 2006 had to be better than dirt cheap circa 2000.
After having tried it out, I'd have to agree with the few professional reviews I could fine. One reviewer said if you didn't need all the bells and whistles of this reciever's older sibling the VSX-816, this one was sonically just as good minus 10 extra watts per channel. CNet said the 816 was a much better value, but they weren't taking into account how much I had paid. They said the 816 was an excellent value. And The Perfect Vision named the 816 as part of their budget system of the year. They said, "This receiver sounds good and works well, meaning it's nothing like typically wimpy-sounding budget AVR's." So if what the reviewers were hearing was anything like what I'm getting from my 516, I think I made a sound investment.
As for the sound, it is noticably clearer than my old receiver. It certainly has much more updated features than my older receiver including Componenet switching and 7.1 surround. It does not, however, have s-video switching, but I was using an outboard switcher for lack of switching on my old receiver anyway.
If I were paying full price, I would definitely pay the extra $100 and go for the 816. But then actually, I wouldn't have bought anything because, as I said, it wasn't actually in the plans. I'm glad I got the deal though. I'm very pleased with my purchase.
Great for the price.......2007-01-10
If you aren't looking to spend a lot, this is a great deal. Sounds great; and where can you find 7.1 receiver for $170??? Plus I got $30 off for signing up for the Amazon credit card.... so I got it for $140, which is less than what I payed for the older generation 5.1 Pioneer I used to have!
Entry-Level Receiver.......2007-01-06
For the price its the best deal in town. Lots of setup options, lots! It is an excellent work of art.

Do-It-Yourself set.......2007-06-28
Well, it didn't work for me after initial setup. Honda CRV is the worst possible cars for this remote to work: the radio has some deep housing around, plus it's on top, plus there is transmission's column-mounted selector lever covering the radio from the left. It worked only in total darkness, 2 o'clock mounted.
Here comes the fix.
It's infrared, so I stared looking for a LED, which is supposed to transmit the signal. Take any home TV remote and see how it works. You'll find some clear plastic, covering a LED, or LED with no cover coming out to send a signal. Basically, it's an invisible light, nothing more.
I was surprised and shocked to find no LED visible anywhere on Pioneer CD-SR100. Since it didn't work for me and I'm too lazy to ship it back, I've decided to open the unit to see what's inside. It wasn't really hard, actually. You start from the bottom, where Pioneer logo is, carefully using a small flat screwdriver, and quickly have the unit in two peaces. This is when you'll see the LEDs, two of them, hidden inside right behind that Pioneer logo. There is a tiny hole of a hair size which, according to minds of Pioneer engineers, is big enough for the signal to come out. I don't want to use any other words here, but I totally disagree with Pioneer on their idea.
To continue, you have to remove the volume control board. It's attached with 4 small screws. After that, I took a drill, a 1/8 drill bit and just drilled a hole near that LED, which was closest to my head unit on 2 o'clock position. That's it. I even trimmed the volume board with scissors to open up the LED even more and pushed its head to the new hole. You can assemble the unit back after that.
And now it WORKS! It works at 2 o'clock, at 6, at 10, at darkness, at sun - it just works. Once again, don't want to comment Pioneer's engineers. People, finalizing the design of this unit should be fired. Actually, the soldering of the board was so-so, it's on very cheap side, has 4-5 parts on the board, and for the money the unit is too overpriced.
You're loosing you warranty after doing what I did, I bet, but for me the only way before was just to throw the unit away, so I don't care.
Thanks.
Nice control, easy to operate.......2007-03-19
Is a nice solution for remote control, is a little hard to found the perfect position on the steering wheel, but you can operate very wheel, I have my remote on the 2h30m angle, but the remote is reversed.
if you need two remotes floating around your car........2007-03-01
pros, cheap remote. cons, mounting broke on install.Do not waste your money unless you want to have a second remote to keep track of.
handy little tool.......2007-02-11
bought this remote because i play my music loud and needs a att button close by, the remote that comes with the head unit barely stays in 1 place, and the Cdsr100 was an ideal choice. install was easy and fast. just that some times it does not send the signal at certain points and it have to turn the steering at an angle for it to work, while this might be dangerous while driving
Good Remote !.......2006-10-08
I've been using this remorefor one month now to control a FHP-4200MP Pioneer Double-DIN Radio/Cass/CD installed at about the 2 o'clock position on the steering wheel of my Toyota Camry XLE It works well and is very convenient. No interuptions regardless of driving conditions. Actually it works as well as the original "card" type remote accompaning the head unit.

Unit is touted as stand alone-IT IS NOT.......2007-06-13
Product description says "Internal XM antenna".
Ask yourself why you would pay $200 for an XM receiver otherwise. You can get a car receiver AND a home receiver together for less.
Here's the problem: if you are walking about anywhere or jogging let's say, you will not be happy with the reception, even though not being tethered to a wired antenna is probably the reason you bought this device in the first place. The internal antenna is awful. And don't waste your money on that little device you'll see on the web that plugs into the hole on the side and "doubles" your reception for $19.99. Double nothing is still nothing. Direct line of sight to satellites is constantly interrupted and repeater stations sometimes help, sometimes don't. And if you get out of any populated area, you know that there are no repeater stations and your "stand alone" XM receiver is useless.
The unit works great when attached to a proper XM antenna in the house or in the car. So unless you want to walk around with your home antenna and 25 foot cable in your hand, forget it.
XM service is fine.
Buy a home unit or a car unit, save your money.
Although a little bulky a solid player through and through.......2007-05-13
This player delivers on most fronts. The ability to records XM songs live and replay them later as truly portable is why I purchased the system in the first place. One disadvantage of the player is the all or none of recording. System does not allow selective deletion of individual recorded songs as the 5 hours capacity fills up. To make room for more songs, all previous songs must be deleted.
Good Product - bad ear phone connections.......2007-05-05
I've had two Pioneer xm2go receivers over the last 1.5 years. I returned the first one to the dealer that I bought it from because I had trouble getting a consistent sound from the receiver. I have the same problem with my second unit (must be a manufacturing device). The internal antenna is very strong. I'm thankful for that because I cannot pick any stations up using the docking station and the antenna. Good functionality in the product but it has some design and performance issues that are frustrating to deal with.
Great service if you never plan on canceling.......2007-04-25
I have been a subscriber for 4 years. Back in November my account was turned off due to a billing issue. The week prior to it being turned off I started receiving 3 calls a day for payment. I advised one of the reps to wait a week for the payment, payment was made. Calls stopped for another week. The radio was then turned off and the 3 calls a day started up again. I explained to the bill collectors I owed nothing and when offered to reactivate the radio I told them not to bother, at this point I wanted nothing more to do with XM. They offered me 3 months of free service to come back, anyone who cancels can get this by the way, and I refused. The 3 calls a day continued for the next week, I was informed that it simply takes a week for your name to fall out of their automated system....
2 more months go by and then I start receiving a bill saying that I reactivated my radio and owe for 2 months of service and all the late fees that go with that. 40 dollars. I call in and state I never reactivated my radio, thus I don't owe for reactivating my radio and the 2 months of service that would have followed. The customer service rep told me that it would be taken cared of, 2 weeks later I get another bill. I call back and the rep tells me the same thing and apologizes for my inconveniences. I even called back the next day just to make sure it was finally resolved, and that rep confirmed that I no longer owed anything. So then last month I start receiving COLLECTIONS NOTICES. YOU HAVE ONE MONTH TO PAY THIS BEFORE IT GOES TO COLLECTIONS. I called in and was promised they would look into it and call me back. This apparently has taken care of the issue, though I never received the call back. This week I called 6 times, 3 of which I was promptly hung up on for no reason, and was told each time that it had been resolved. So hopefully this time it really is... To anyone considering XM I suggest you just get an MP3 player.
PIONEER AirWare XM2Go Portable XM SATELLITE RADIO RECEIVER.......2007-02-26
This receiver is FANTASTIC. I hate scratchy off frequency noise. When I got this Pioneer AirWare XM2Go and played XM Satellite Radio stations.... I was blown away. I could easily hook up to my car Stereo Speaker System by popping it into the docking station, or I could zip it right out of the car along with my handbag and pop it right into the docking station in the living room....AND it would play out of my 7.1 Surround Sound Home Theater System without needing any wire hookup to speakers. I could take the Receiver on hikes and walks thru the woods and have the marvelous sound of XM Radio !!! If you like quality sound when listening to music or VINTAGE RADIO programs, you will love this receiver. EASY to use and and OUTSTANDING PIONEER QUALITY.

Pioneer Car CD Changer Magazine.......2007-01-11
Kinda hard to say a whole lot about CD changer magazine, but this one does the job well. Little trouble in extracting each 'sleeve' that holds the disc in place. Rugged design, and easy to load and unload into the changer (It helps that I'm able to put the six-disc changer into the glove box).
I wouldn't mind if Pioneer put an extra label in the package since it's I sometimes reorganize my discs. I have several CD changer magazines and some discs 'fall out of favor' and get replaced with other CD albums.

Customer Reviews:
Great Sound, Perfect dash fit.......2007-06-12
I bought this stereo for my 2000 Chevy Tahoe, because I wanted a radio that would fit perfectly in the dash without any modifications. 1.5 din car stereos are hard to find. I love the sound and all the features it has. Really worth the price! I only have problems mounting it properly, unfortunately the brackets of the original radio do not fit this unit. But I'll figure something out. Overall,...very good deal!
Plenty of power and features, easy to install, performs well.......2004-10-12
The used Durango I recently purchased came with the "90-pound-weakling" equivalent of a factory stereo. I wanted to do a better job than when I added an aftermarket system to the Dakota a few years back, so I researched which CD receivers would be the best fit for the 1.5 DIN (oversized) dash opening (found in a bunch of Chrysler and GM vehicles).
I settled on the Pioneer DEH-P77DH, and I remain convinced that this was an excellent choice for several reasons.
First, the sound quality is rich and full-45 watts x 4. I can hear details and nuances with clarity. I've paired it up with four 6.75 inch Alpine speakers in the doors, and I have plenty of low end (I don't want to rattle anyone's windows). So far, the CD player has not skipped once or failed to play any of my compilations.
Second, the unit was easy to install. (Of course, having a neighbor who is an electronics whiz is a bonus.) Be sure to order a wiring harness, solder the connections, and then plug and play. It fit snugly into the opening---no cheap looking adapter plate kits needed.
Third, the DEH-P77DH is full of features, including an equalizer, a high pass filter (which is useful if you are running a subwoofer), and a low, mid, and high options for the loudness control. The removable head unit is a nice security feature. There are three RCA outputs, one of which is for a nonfading output for a subwoofer.
Supposedly, this CD receiver will work seamlessly with a satellite radio receiver, too. And there is a small, nifty remote control that is a snap to use. I, for one, happen to like the big volume control knob but some folks might not.
Fourth, programming radio stations is easy, and this unit has a very sensitive tuner, allowing me to pull in better programming than the mess that clogs the airways around here.
A few cons, to be fair, should be noted.
First, the display is a bit dated looking compared with some of the fancy "organic" graphics popular today.
The design of the head unit has a couple of vexing features. One button near the top left switches from on to off, from CD to radio. Then another button left off center at the bottom switches between three levels of FM settings (you can store 15 FM stations in memory) and the AM settings. This design is irritating when you want to jump to AM to check traffic reports, for instance. Also, this unit does not play MP3s, so be forewarned.
Setting up the menus and functions will require keeping the manual within reach the first few times because some of the programming is not that intuitive.
All in all, the Pioneer DEH-P77DH has taken much of the misery out of my commute and made road trips quite enjoyable and its many pluses outweigh the minuses.

Terrible Manual.......2007-04-29
The Pioneer Receiver is a good product if you know how to hook up modern equipment. I have not seen as bad a manual as comes with this product in a long time. There is no overall diagram for the back pannel, unless you are hooking your compnents up exactly as they describe, you better read and understand the entire manual. Took me way to long to do a simple connection of DVD player with s-video and optical digital audio input. Right now I am not sure I can connect all of my components into this reciever because of the pathetic manual.
Performance close to my Rotel-1065!.......2007-02-28
After owning a 1997 Pioneer Elite Series Receiver for 10 years now, I thought it was time for an upgrade. I'm Extremely Picky when it comes to audio as I've been a member of the Audio Engineering Society for over 30 years, own and operate a 30 track recording studio with very high end audiophile gear ( Crown Reference Power Amps And Tannoy DMT-15 Monitors, etc) and perform regularly as a Jazz Fusion & Rock Bassist.
We additonally have a high end double walled Home Theater with Phil Jones AAD Q-40 Series Speakers and a Rotel-1065 Receiver with (2) additional 1,000 watt subwoofer amplifiers driving (4)-10" Phil Jones Subwoofers.
As I went to choose my new Pioneer Elite ( Love the Direct Feature as you can hear your CDs as they were mixed right off the recording console-the VSX-816 has it too) I realized that they are now deeper than my old unit and wouldn't fit into our Media Center.
It appeared I would have to "down grade" to the Pioneer VSX-816 to get a unit that would physically fit, as it is under the 18.5" in depth of the other Pioneer Receivers. I read several online reviews and saw it got great ratings as a "budget" or "starter" receiver. The very low cost concerned me. How good could it be? I also saw a couple of reviews elsewhere that said it lacked warmth or low mid bass.
My concerns grew but thought it worth a try as if it didn't work out, it could go into our office or another area and the old Elite could be re-installed.
The unit arrived today well packaged. I was ready for a test run with our Phil Jones AAD 2000 Series Speakers & Velodyne Subwoofer. At a cost of close to 10K for these speakers, was the VSX-816 an insult to Phil's & Velodyne's Products?
Initial trials were disappointing with my reference CDs. Clearly the "warmth" or "low mid bass" was lacking as a reviewer on another site stated. Specs showed the VSX-816 only had a 6DB gain at 100Hz while to older Elite had a gain of 10DB. It really needed something at around 200Hz in our very live room. My wife even shook her head and said "It doesn't sound as good Lover, back to the old unit"
But wait....I'm like any other guy and haven't read the manual!
With less than 10 minute reading I found there was a Graphic EQ on the menu that allowed exceptional control at various frequencies while also allowing you to select your subwoofer crossover point. In less than 30 minutes the new Pioneer VSX-816 was out shining the old Elite and performing almost as well as the high end Rotel-1065.
This unit would be a bargin at twice the cost!
We use a Real Time Spectral Analyzer in the Studio and our large Home Theater to set EQ levels and I'll eventually use it with the VSX-816 as well but for now, my ears don't lie. My wife gives it a two thumbs up as well.
DO NOT be Mislead by the low price!
Tons of features with lots or control over various surround settings for Music & Video. All kinds of inputs but missing HDMI at this price point.
This receiver will do everything you want with only one exception. Many high end audiophile speakers lack effeciency as a trade off of accurate reproduction. The AAD 2000s are in the high 80db range at 1 meter. It takes tons of power to get high volumes with these virtually perfect speakers and the VSX-816 doesn't have it...but the highest end Pioneer Elite doesn't either. My old Elite didn't @ 120 watts. As long as you're happy with 100DB or less ( I know your ears will last longer) you simply can not go wrong here.
Take to time to read and manual and learn about basic sound EQ and you'll be a happy camper. Absolutely 100% Satisfied with only 30 minutes of tweeking!
Steve's Pioneer receiver.......2007-01-21
Super product. Great and varied features. Very technically advanced product. Easy setup. Do not like the post type of speaker cable connects. Prefer the push/pull type. Had hard time getting speakers connected properly. Otherwise, a super receiver.
Great full-featured basic system.......2007-01-12
Does everything it says it does. Lots of connections for all you could want. Cool way to set up the room sound. Fairly easy operation and manual, provided you know what you're doing to begin with. Best value for all these features. I haven't used XM so I can't comment on that, but I've used all the other features. Shipment arrived very quickly and was in good/new condition.
