JBL Northridge E20 2-Way 5-Inch Bookshelf Speakers, Pair (Black Ash)

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The slim-profile Northridge E Series E20 fits neatly on a bookshelf. It's the ideal choice for a home, office or dorm room stereo system where space is limited, but outstanding performance is demanded. The E20 is also an excellent choice for side or rear surround speakers in a Northridge E home theater system.

The E20 performs like a pro, with technology developed by JBL's Professional division. Equipped with JBL's tried-and-true titanium-laminate tweeters and PolyPlas woofers, the speaker reproduces high notes with extreme clarity. The lows and mids, assisted by the FreeFlow flared port, are loud and clear, without unwanted distortion or boominess. The Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguide ensures that every seat is the best in the house for sweet music and intelligible dialogue, or for just rocking out. Since the transducers were purpose-designed to work together harmoniously, JBL's simple Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) crossover network divides the signal with minimal processing (and minimal opportunity to degrade the signal). Sturdy gold-plated, 5-way binding posts provide a strong connection that preserves all of the nuances of the original program. The computer-designed, lock-mitred cabinet virtually eliminates distortion, and its slim European profile won't overpower your room.

The E20 is available with an attractive Black Ash, Beech or Cherry finish.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-06

I first bought a pair two years ago with a JBL EC25 center channel speaker for my Harman Kardon receiver and cd player. All I can say is WOW! The sound and quality of workmanship is a super deal for the money. I bought them through J&R as I have a lot of things and they arrived as promised. They can't be wall mounted but that was not an issue for me. This Northridge series is fabulous. Afterward, I added a pair of E50s and E80s along with a E250P subwoofer and couldn't be happier!

These speakers sound great. For the money (less than $100) they are one of the top rated pair of book shelf speakers you will find. This is a no-brainer!

4 out of 5 stars Polk Audio R15 vs. JBL Northridge E20.......2006-11-12

Polk Audio R15 vs. JBL Northridge E20

I was surprised at how different these two speakers sounded. Just listening to either, by themselves on a particular day is one thing, but when you press a button to instantly transfer the sound over to the other set of speakers, the difference is quite noticeable. Neither one is bad, and neither is perfect. But neither cost very much money.

Here's my take...

The Polk R15s are very midrangy. The highs are there, the lows are there, but the mid-mid/highs ARE THERE! Too much there in my opinion, making the overall sound a bit 'harsh'.. 'plasticy', 'hollow', 'bright', 'in your face', 'transistor radioish.' YET, the overall sound is very tight, which is kinda cool. I can easily see why someone would go for this sound and like these speakers, just not me.

With the JBL's, its just the opposite. The bass is a slightly accentuated. But the mids almost sound a little scooped and the highs pretty much even. The overall sound is much warmer and thicker but some might consider it a tad muddy or dull. It just depends on how you look at it.

The JBL's just seem to have a better, natural sound that is more pleasing to the ear. I like the tight bass of the Polk R15, and it seems to have a slightly bigger soundscape coming out of it, but the JBL's just have the overall more pleasing to the ear sound quality.

I tried both sets of speakers on rock, heavy metal, folk, & solo piano music, and they had the same respective characteristics on each.

Summary:
- If you like a lot of mids/treble, and brightness, you would probably prefer the Polks.
- If you like more of a natural sound you would probably prefer the JBL's.
- If you're very picky about your bass and like it nice and tight and not as much concerned about mids and highs, you would probably like the Polks.
- If you like the drum set to have a more pronounced rockin sound, you would probably want the JBL's.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound and value.......2006-07-10

After reading previous posted reviews, I decided to purchase these JBL speakers to replace 2 larger Infinity speakers that I didn't have the floor space for anymore. It's still amazing to me that speakers this size can produce such an outstanding sound quality. I hardly notice the difference in quality (though I'll admit the Infinity speakers are about 15 years old) and these fit perfectly in my entertainment center. My great room is not huge and these are more than enough powered for great coverage. If you have space problems or a small- to mid-sized room, these are an excellent choice and you cannot beat the price for what you are getting in return.

5 out of 5 stars Great Speakers.......2006-06-19

I play string bass and it is difficult to hear the bass on most recordings but the E-20 speakers really bring the bass tones out. I don't feel I need an additional woofer. Really enjoying the great sound. J&R shipped fast. Ordered on the weekend, received Thurs.
