3 out of 5 stars a bit of hype.......2007-06-18

still tinny after all this time! wanted to like them, desperately! but, you get what you pay for and these are all about design, not sound.

3 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality.......2007-06-12

Look good. Sound poor. I'm far from an audiophile, but it's obvious to anyone that these speakers were made with design in mind, with sound as more of an after-thought. Tinny and hollow, music is unenjoyable to listen to on this system. Spend the extra money on a worthwhile system unless you plan on using these only for gaming and possibly movies, if you don't mind the tenuous sound you'll get.

5 out of 5 stars The Best in Its Price Range.......2007-06-09

I have given these speakers as gifts on two occasions and own them myself as well. The sound quality is excellent and they're easy on the eyes also. In my opinion, there is no better system in this price range.

5 out of 5 stars Creature is Great.......2007-06-08

The Creature has great sound and the bass is unreal for such a small package.

4 out of 5 stars JBL Creature II's a Good Value.......2007-05-31

This Creature II was a replacement for the factory provided speakers for our Dell, which had failed and were not under warranty any longer. The JBL purchase turned out to be a very pleasant surprise overall. The quality of sound is definitely a step up from the previous set.

Only one detraction is the AC power "brick" is surprisingly bulky and becomes almost too hot to touch after being attached to power.

3 out of 5 stars Looks cool and all.......2007-05-24

I bought these speakers like an idiot because I new nothing about Total power RMS, peak power RMS and all that technical talk. I read the reviews of people saying they sounded great and had big bass and believed it. If you want a decent sounding 2.1 system that looks stylish and does produce some form of bass, then these are what you need. However, I really craved more power and after alot of reading and research I was able to find a system that fit what I wanted. These served me well for my first year of college, but other systems were drowning out mine with alot more boom and loud sound. I wanted what all the other kids had, so I parted with these.

They are very sturdy construction and seemed to last really well, however I feel like the woofer didn't have as much kick when I was done with them, but that isnt a proven fact. The LED's on the aluminum version is white, and not green like the descrip says. Also as a side note, I've seen these priced at around $30-40 at retail stores, and I was suprised to see that amazon hadn't lowered the price since I bought these a year ago. Usually they do a good job with that stuff though.

As a word of advice however, keep in mind what you want and look at the power output of the speakers and subwoofer. For as much boom as you can handle check out the Logitec z5500. The sub is 180 watts compared to 25, but they are alot pricier and are a 5.1 system.

4 out of 5 stars Great speakers.......2007-05-07

Jbl Creature 2 - Aluminum
Nice speakers once you figure out how to connect them great sound work great with my Imac 20in 2.1ghz with isight. Fast delivery Great Price

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PURCHASE FOR THE PRICE.......2007-04-04

NO COMPLAINTS OR ISSUES, GREAT PURCHASE FOR THE PRICE..THIS IS NOT MEANT TO DISRUPT THE NEIGHBORS, BUT PROVIDE A REASONABLE AND ATTRACTIVE SET OF SPEAKERS FOR THE OFFICE OR COMPUTER ROOM.

3 out of 5 stars JBL Adequate sound though not their best product.......2007-03-30

For the price I got on this speaker set, worth the money. I`m a fan of JBL products and have had surround speker systems from the brand with excellent performance, not so the case with this product, a liitle disappointed. Now for the details .. Conectivity a 4, realtively easy to hook up. Sound a 3 because speakers don`t seem to be shielded, for example these were purchased to use with a Macbook and they are set close to the monitor so you get interference & crackling noise, moved from location a little farther (as much as I could due to space restriction) and still got some noise in them. Volume level is ok. Appearance a 4, the silver model is very cool looking. All in all an ok purchase for the money, they are recommendable, Note: make sure yo have enough space to locate far from the monitor.

3 out of 5 stars Good looking.......2007-03-23

It surely looks cool on your desk.
But the subwoofer does not deliver the necessary base you need.

If you have a local store where you can try, I recommed to do it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars JBL does it again..........2007-06-25

I recently purchased these speakers to upgrade my surrond system. First off they sound GREAT and for the price you can't beat them. The speakers they are replacing are a pair of JBL's I purchased back in 91. I just couldn't find any speakers that gave me the sound these do in this pricepoint. I was a little skeptical about ordering them, but I couldn't resist the price difference. In local stores they're $299 a piece, I bought them through Amazon for 173 a piece w/free shipping. Let me say this again EXCELLENT SPEAKERS. They can work as your main speakers in a home theatre set up or if you just want to listen to music they really shine through. Before I needed my main JBL's and a satellite pair to get the clarity I get from this one pair. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars I love these speakers.......2007-05-31

woo!!!, I could not believe how good it is... I upgraded my speaker from Polk r300 to these. Big difference!!!, Now I can hear more details, which I could not hear before. My favorite music Andrea Bocelli's Under the Desert Sky sounds sooo wonderful from these speakers.

I was a bit worry about the look before I got it. It turned out they are NOT that bad. With the silver cover, it matches most TV stand. And it was NOT that bulky as I orignally imagined.

5 out of 5 stars Superior Sound; Premium Manufacturer; Competitive Price.......2007-05-14

From a sound standpoint, these are really great speakers. I am using these as the main speakers for a home theater and regularly watch DVD music concerts. They accurately reproduce the music very well, and don't have brassy highs like many speakers in this price range have. I am a big fan of the double-8 inch woofers instead of a single larger one; they are "fast", accurate, and don't have a muffled sound like my last 12 inch speakers. I should note that I am also using a powered sub-woofer, but have it turned pretty low.

Unless you are a professional speaker critic with a perfect environment to play your stereo in, you'll be happy with these speakers. The factory packing/boxes are very sturdy and protected the product well during the shipment period to my home.

The only thing that I am really not very happy about are the front screens. In the picture, you see the raw speakers, but do not see the screens, or covers. They are a metallic silver, instead of a more traditional black. I am not real happy about that, but the sound quality pretty much off-sets that.

3 out of 5 stars Black Ash boring - bring back cherry.......2007-02-05

Seems like the JBL Venue series replaces the JBL Northridge series so sound quality should be ok - but you could get cherry and beech cabinets with the Northridge series - cherry looks FANTASTIC. Last time I had black ash it was easily marred and looked like it belonged in a funeral home! Bring back cherry and a 3 way center channel like the JBL Northridge EC35!

5 out of 5 stars Great experience........2007-01-18

I was concerned about purchasing through a third party source however everything went very well! Product arrived in great condition and very quickly. Would definitely do it again.

Amazon.com Product Description

Enrich your movie, gaming, and music experiences with the Creature II powered three-piece speaker system, which connects directly to your Mac or PC's 1/8-inch audio output jack. Equipped with a pair of cutting-edge black satellite speakers and matching subwoofer (think Darth Vader's helmet), the system offers rich, powerful stereo sound to everything from the latest Pixar DVD to the newest Splinter Cell game release. Users can also connect it to a boombox, digital music player, or portable audio device such as an iPod or CD Walkman. It's the audio quality, however, that will please most listeners. The subwoofer's 4-inch Magnum transducer delivers clean, low bass that fills up a room, while the satellites' Odyssey Plus drivers enhance the high- and mid-range frequencies. The right speaker also comes with a pair of volume buttons that complement the treble and bass adjustment knobs found on the subwoofer. In addition, both the satellites and the subwoofer are magnetically shielded to protect against monitor distortion.

What's in the Box
Two satellite speakers, subwoofer, power supply, audio input cable, user's manual.

3 out of 5 stars look and sound great, but arent loud at all.......2007-02-21

these speakers look amazing and sound clear as a bell, ive heard things in songs ive never heard before with these speakers, but if you want to blast music these speakers are not for you, they start distorting a whole lot when you turn it up

5 out of 5 stars Nice look and good sound.......2007-01-26

I bought the JBL Creature II after doing a lot of reaserch on the web. The quality of the sound is good and it can get pretty loud for a room. I like it and recommend it. JBL has released two newer models (1 is available in Europe only) with a different design. You may want to check the other models first before buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Price keeps dropping, while performance has improved.......2007-01-20

First of all, disregard older complaints about losing volume settings. The current edition of Creature II (my box says model DW-607) no longer has that problem -- I powered the speakers on and off, and even unplugged them to verify that the last volume setting persisted across power cycles. In addition, specifications have improved slightly from those listed in the product description: freq response is now rated 45Hz-20KHz, satellite power is now 9W each, and subwoofer power is now 27W. While they were over $[...] when first launched, you can now buy a set of Creature IIs for less than $[...].

I think these are a nice set of COMPUTER speakers for the money, but don't get caught up in some other reviewers' enthusiastic marks for sonics. Although the name JBL conjures connotations of home stereo audio bliss, these are definitely computer speakers, not home stereo speakers. Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is rated at 10% -- while that is a typical number for inexpensive, powered speakers for computers, a middle of the road home stereo amp comes in at well under 1% THD. In addition, while the power rating seems high, at least compared to your home or car stereo, I've found that I wish I had a bit more headroom in the volume department. Max volume on these speakers is fine when you're sitting right in front of them, but you won't be able to hear them very well from the next room. In addition, I agree with other's complaints that the cross over at 180Hz is a rather rough transition -- it would have been a good idea to add a midrange knob to the existing bass and treble knobs, or to even trade the treble knob for a midrange. The sound is somewhat unnatural in the midrange unless you make some adjustments with an equalizer -- both iTunes and my iPod provide that feature, therefore, that wasn't a deal breaker for me.

All that being said, these are definitely worth the $45 I paid, and a nice step up from the typical speakers that come bundled with computer systems. Just don't expect them to transform your computer into a home stereo system. They sound more like a good boom box.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-01-18

I am very impressed with the speakers. It took a few minutes to figure out how to work the controls. The sound is wonderful and fills my work area. I could not be more pleased.

5 out of 5 stars For their purpose - they are great...........2007-01-18

People that are writing reviews about how these speakers are terrible have too high of expectations for these speakers. They are in a $75 or < price point and well exceed the quality for that range. I have these hooked up to a personal computer to listen to some music. I will admit that I have an X-Fi sound card hooked up to them so that does boost the quality of sound for any speaker system, but this setup is something else. I really like the output quality and the controls are definitely easy to access. The controls are universal for JBL products, so if you are used to their products it's rather easy to navigate. You have your + for volume up, - for volume down, and mute by pressing both at the same time. I highly recommend these for someone looking for an easy setup that sounds great for it's less than $75 price tag.
Regards.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to beat for the price!.......2007-06-30

I'm very impressed by these set of speakers. For the price they are almost unbeatable. If you plan on using them for a small room, like me, they are perfect. The highs and mids are bright and vibrant and the bass isn't boomy like my sony speakers but rather nice and clear. Deserves 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Surprising sound from a smaller floor speaker.......2007-05-18

While JBL's speaker performance hasn't been quite as awe inspiring as the products from companies like paradigm and definitive technology, they have still produced quality speakers to those that don't desire to empty their lifesavings on recreational music listening and movie watching. I have used that spiel before in my review for the JBL stadium, but I liked it so I used it again.

With that said, I use these speakers as my rear surrounds and find myself still outwardly giddy about the purchase. Having experienced the sound of the stadiums I figured "why not?" for the surrounds. Needing to fill the void of sound at the back of my room I went out and bought some 4' wire shelves (to raise the sound to a height that would be above a person's ears when seated) and placed these speakers up on their respective pedestals.

For my testing I hooked up my computer to my Harmon Kardon receiver via toslink (optical) and messed around with the soundstage on several demanding songs and video clips. On lower volumes bass presence is well accomplished, louder volumes however prove to be too demanding for the unamplified little 6" speaker (no surprise). Midrange is always full, and can be a little overpowering, but to the normal user at more acceptable volumes, you'll never have problems. I have always enjoyed JBL's tweeters, you get a much fuller sound stage than the "sweet spot" creating horn designs, and for the price range you will not find better high end frequency performance.

The speaker's sensitivity (for those who don't already know) is the ability for the speaker to take an electrical signal and turn it to recognizable sound. The higher the sensitivity, the louder volume you get with less wattage per channel. Luckily these speakers don't require much power so no thousand-plus dollar amplifier is required so those 100-400 dollar best-buy receivers work just fine. Plus you'll never need to worry about blowing a speaker as receivers turn off on their own when they push too much current (A plague all too many of us home theater owners have to deal with). Don't like it? Go buy a preamp, a few amps and speakers that can handle 300 watts each and 5000-plus dollars later problem solved (until you look at your movie theater style electric bill).

Again I would have liked to have seen biwiring capabilities, but the speakers still reproduce sound very well. And, I must say that the silver grills look really nice but good luck trying to match it with anything else in the room that isn't black. The easiest way to rectify this little problem is to just take them off, the speakers look awesome without them anyway (Which is probably why every picture you see online has the grills off).

Anyway I'll stop now. For those looking for a modest home theater I would certainly suggest these as main (Front)speakers. They performed better than I had expected and only require a subwoofer to help assist with bass representation.

5 out of 5 stars Bang on a budget.......2006-07-21

This is Jbl's entry level front channel speaker. It is a great deal. The bass is very nice (I actually won't be buying a sub) and the sound reproduction is very clear. Haven't gotten to volume test this yet since I set it up at 11:00 PM but everything so far has been GREAT. I love the sound from these.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Take your favorite music outdoors without losing precious fidelity with the JBL S36AWII weather-resistant, mirror-image bookshelf speakers. Offering an adaptable horizontal/vertical orientation inspired by the monitors seen in many professional recording studios, the speakers are ideal for backyard porches and patios, or even moist locations such as near hot tubs or in locker rooms. Each S36AWII employs an exclusive 6-inch WeatherPlas cone woofer, 4-inch WeatherPlas cone midrange, and 1-inch pure titanium dome tweeter to make music and movies come alive with superb depth and unmatched clarity. The tweeter also boasts an oval design called Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS), which results in a wider horizontal dispersion of sound. The idea is simple: turn every seat, regardless of location, into the best seat in the house or patio. Additional audio enhancements include an IsoPower baffle that reduces distortion caused by cabinet vibration and a Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) crossover network that preserves the original signal for additional clarity.

The S36AWII's owe much of their outdoor versatility to their high-temperature, oversized Kapton voice coils and Heatscape motor structures, which stand up to intense heat and whipping wind. For added protection, JBL recommends locating the speakers under a roof eve or awning for best results, as the speakers are moisture-resistant but not waterproof. Should listeners not possess a suitable outdoor environment, they can move inside and use the speakers as bookshelf units or rear speakers in a comprehensive surround sound system. The speakers even come with special screws designed for wall mounting at a downward angle, which lets built-up moisture drain from the cabinets. In addition, the speakers are video shielded, so listeners can place them near TVs and video monitors without fear of picture interference.

The S36AWIIs hail from JBL's Studio series, a line of consumer speakers that use the same high-tech components and technologies as the company's professional models. Among the speakers' technical specifications are a maximum recommended amplifier power of 150 watts, a frequency response of 60 Hz to 20 kHz, and crossover frequencies of 650 Hz and 3,000 Hz. Audiophiles will also appreciate the sturdy, gold-plated, five-way binding posts, which both provide a variety of secure hookup options and preserve the nuances of the source music.

Each speaker measures 14.62 by 10.25 by 5 inches (W x H x D) and is covered by a five-year warranty on parts and labor.

    What's in the Box
Two S36AWII speakers, wall-mount screws, self-adhesive rubber pads, warranty card, user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars Very attractive quality speaker with unusually superior characteristics.......2007-04-23

I have two pairs of these. These are the reasons you should consider them.
    .
    1) They are a high quality three way speaker in a small bookshelf. Most bookshelf speakers are only two way so you tend to lose out on sound quality. These do not have that deficiency.
    .
    2) They are higher end than average JBL home speakers. These are from the Studio line which is better than Northridge/Venue/Blaboa/etc.
    .
    3) They are far more attractive than the average speaker. Most speakers
come in some dark depressing wood, usually mortuary black or if you are lucky cherry. These speakers have a tough attractive white housing and they will blend very well with many decours.
    .
    4) They are bookshelf speakers, not some ugly monstrosity of a tower.
    .
    5) These speakers are good enough that four pairs of these and a sub would make a fine home theater.
    .
    6) Price - at about $240/pair you cannot get anything else in the JBL Studio line for nearly that price. They put the same drivers in much more expensive speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Consider these as part of a system.......2006-12-24

I purchased these speakers to be the left and right front speakers in my "small" 7.1 home theater system. Alone, they sound a bit colored in the midrange (as many JBL speakers do)and the bottom end is so-so. What I would like to point out is that this speaker model is part of a line designed to be implemented as a system. The JBL Northridge E Series has several models that are designed to work together to form a whole. My system has the two aforementioned E50s as left and right fronts, an EC35 (excellent!) center channel speaker, E20s as the surrounds, and E10s as the surround back speakers. Filling out the bottom is an E150P powered subwoofer.
This system is incredible! The dynamic range and sound pressure levels developed are amazing. The imaging is very transparent (even in my small room) with crystalline highs that are not too tinny or harsh. It has an overall warmth and presence similar to my other system (which cost five times more). I'm pushing this with a Harman Kardon AVR-7300 receiver, which I also cannot say enough good things about, but I do recommend using a high quality speaker cable. Something in the Monster "M" or "Z" series, as well as other cables available from MIT, Nordost and Audioquest would be good choices. Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars They look more silver-ish but that's about all.......2006-10-05

    ***REVISED*** 10/13/06 (see bottom)
    12/13/06 (see bottom)

When I got them they where "black ash" as advertised (amazon pic from JBL website) but the woofers have a metallic look to them as well as the front main trim. I guess the picture is taking at a bad angle to the light or something. The woofers are no-ware near as black as in the picture (I think they look better actually).

Ok onto the good stuff, man good speakers for this price they are where it's at. I'm a fan of JBL but not their price that's why I buy online and at discount. These speakers much like the newer L830 have a great mid range and a fine clear top end. The low is pretty nice as well, it sounds realistic like I'm actually listening to a bass guitar, piano, or chello. The dynamic range is vary good and they don't discriminate individual tones, you can hear instruments and off tones clearly. The vocals are clear as well, nice and pronounced. They image well (I guess is the word)you have to get over to one side of the set up before you notice an imbalance of the sound (in a big room mind you). When watching a movie it's like I'm in the theater minus the surround sound. They are a good solid par of speakers.

Some bad things, I've been listening to them for a little while now and decided to hook up one of my KLH 970A to the center channel on my receiver. Well now it sounds perfect, they seem to lack the "front or middle" vocal definition for tv/movies when placed a normal tv distance apart (say over 3-5 feet). A center channel (or small high Hz speaker) really rounds them off and makes them sound complete. Also, there is no lack of deep lows. Unless you really want to hear some rumbling a sub-woofer is almost not needed. They are relatively heavy (25 Lb each). You would need good sturdy shelves/stands that can take weight at the edge. They are pretty big, well not big but shaped a little odd, you almost have stand them on their side if your putting them in the corner of a smaller room. That's about, other than physical things it's a top notch speaker. I haven't played everything through them or as loud as I dare but I have liked what i've herd so fare...

(All this was done in a 10x10x8H room with a Yamaha HTR-5940 useing 18 guage wire, two conductor, all copper speaker wire with chepo banna plugs all around.

    ***REVISE*** 10/13/06
    In big rooms.
I recently had a chance to try them out in a good sized room. I didn't take a measurement but I would guess around 25x30 feet, with part of the ceiling high (maybe 14 feet) and angled, the other part (where the speakers where) was about 10 feet. The room was sort of two rooms the low room cut into the big one blah blah blah the room was shaped odd, and they still sounded good with less echoing than you would think. This room was bare, only had half finished cabinets and a hard wood floor.

    ***REVISE*** 12/13/06
In small rooms (like the above mentioned 10x10x8)
If you can, place them so they face away from you (the wall you most in front of). They get kind of boomy at times, I've found letting the sound reflect of the wall in front of you may give some echoing but improves the sound realism in smaller rooms.

    5 out of 5 stars Good choice.......2006-07-13

I was replacing floor speakers and wanted a pair of speakers which had a smaller footprint (my wife didn't want a room filled and dominated with speakers)...yet still provided performance. I got what I wanted by purchasing the JBL E50.

I am using the speakers primarily as the front main channels (5.1 configuration) in a room that is 15'x15' with a 10'ceiling plate. The room is filled well with sound. The audio is clean and provides good spatial depth to the movie sound tracks. This in tandem with the other (center, subwoofer) JBL Northridge speakers.

Playing music from my CD player....sounds good and inviting. Good definition. Good reproduction.

I believe I made the right choice and very pleased with my purchase. I would recommend JBLs.

    4 out of 5 stars JBL E50 Shoot Out.......2005-09-12

I have been a JBL fan for years. I am a professional Audio Engineer, and I am familliar with the tonality and durability of JBL products.

I purchased a pair of JBL Northridge E50 bookshelf speakers to do a shootout with a pair of Polk Monitor 40 speakers for a client I am desigining a home stereo install for. The client paid approximately $250 delivered for each pair of speakers.

After several days of testing within tolerances, I could still differentiate between the two, but it became nearly impossible for the client to tell which speaker was which in a blindfold test. Both television and CDs were tested through the speakers, and the music ranged from Josh Grobin to Stevie Ray Vaughn. It should be noted that the Polk Monitor 40s and the JBL E50s both required the use of a subwoofer in order to sound complete. By sheer weight, the JBL wins hands-down. At 25-lbs. each, it is a much heavier box than the 17-lb. Polk.

Through much of our testing, the 3-way JBL seemed more transparent in it's tonality, but when switched back and forth between the 2-way Polk within the same piece of music, it sometimes sounded a bit mid-rangey through the 800-1600 Hz range. I'm not sure whether the Polk was missing through that range, or whether the JBL was adding, but the Polks sounded more like what I was hearing in the AKG headphones. Also, the JBLs seemed to be lacking a bit in the lower range, through the 60-160 Hz range. This was the most surprising result, because the 8" woofer in the JBL looks as though it should be kicking the tail of the Polk 6" dual woofers, but the Polks had a deeper, richer bottom end.

The JBL E50s are rated for greater power than the Polk Monitor 40s, so if you plan to rock the house, the JBLs are probably a better choice. When pressed to their Continuous Power Handling rating, the Polks began to sound as though they were suffering from distress. They didn't distort, but they were obviously uncomfortable, while the JBLs never winced. However, for the purpose of this comparison, my client stated that the listening area (15 ft. X 20 ft.) would never tolerate that much volume, and confessed he would never be listening to the JBLs as loud as they were tested, so keep in mind the space where you will be using them.

In the end, it was decided that the Polk Monitor 40s were smoother and did not inject their own tonality onto the music. The JBL E50s would have required a physical change to the shelf on which they were to reside, so the client made the choice for the Polk Monitor 40s, but if you have a good sturdy shelf with room for the E50, and a listening space large enough to turn them up, you may make a different choice.

4 out of 5 stars Good performance, excellent value.......2004-12-17

The build quality is excellent and the E50s image well. The sound is warm and smooth, very easy to listen to. Bass response is adequate but not strong. The treble could use a bit more air as well.

Since the E50s are bookshelf speakers, they seem best suited for a small to medium sized room or for use as surround speakers. If used as main speakers for a large room, I suggest adding a separate subwoofer. Overall, an excellent speaker at this price point.
