Polk's 125-watt Monitor 40 bookshelf loudspeaker offers high performance for music and home theater fans at an affordable price without sacrificing quality. Easily driven by a modestly-powered amplifier or receiver, the Monitor 40's highly efficient design provides open, spacious, and clear sound and is voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The speaker has a non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with .75-inch thick baffles and frontÐto-back and side-to-side internal bracing, ensuring cleaner, more lifelike sound. Its stylish looks complement today's LCD and Plasma TVs, with wood grain finishes and modern titanium faces.

For clear and detailed high frequency response and realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, the 40 uses a 1-inch silk/polymer composite Dynamic Balance dome tweeter with powerful neodymium magnets. High efficiency, excellent bass is courtesy of dual, 5.25-inch bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance drivers that are lightweight and stiff with good damping for lower distortion. Dynamic Balance technology produces flat frequency response, sharp detail, transparency and an ability to play program material with wide dynamic range at life-like volume levels without a hint of strain. The sound is always clean, clear, and effortless.

The Monitor 40 features a critically tuned flared port that minimizes port noise for good low frequency extension with low distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass. The multiple small-diameter driver design also helps deliver the 40's wide dispersion, solid mid-range, and more detailed bass response for an open, "box-less," three-dimensional sound.

Mylar bypass capacitors are used in the crossovers, which extends high frequency response and further improves detail and transparency. Dual, five-way binding post connectors allow for secure hook-ups, as well as bi-wiring and bi-amping flexibility for more advanced set ups. Plus, the speaker is magnetically shielded for safe placement on or near TVs and video monitors with no risk of distortion.

They have a very rich sound and I am using them as the front speakers for my AV sourround sytem. Had to get a bracket to mount them to the wall. There is no "key hole" on the back to mount them with.

"A chain is only as strong as its weakest link"..the sound quality of speakers are only as good as the equipment they are connected to.My opinion of these speakers are based on many years of experience with a wide range of speakers and there hook up options.To get the best sound quality from these Polks speakers they must be connected using the Bi-wire approach (Read manual for hook up instructions).Secondly,they must be broken in for at lease 24hrs of playing music putting your cd player on repeat.If your equipment is made by reputable companies with a reputation for audiophile quality parts,you will be very happy with these speakers.I can't tell you how good these speakers sound because sound quality is relative,relative to the equipment you have and the type of music one listen to.Finally,these speakers provide excellent midrange and highs a quality subwoofer ie Yamaha or Velodyne is required for low frequency.

Absolutely AMAZING........2007-01-30

I got these open box from Circuit City for $100 each ($200 for the pair). I bought a Sony STR-DE197 200W Stereo Amplifier/Receiver for them, and hooked them up to an Advent ASW1200 100W 12" Powered Subwoofer that I bought off Amazon a while back. I'm telling you, these things are absolutely amazing. I run them off my computer with a Creative X-Fi Platinum sound card, and the sound quality and clarity is unmatched. The highs are very rich and crisp, and the mids are very strong. The lows could use some work, but considering they're bookshelf speakers, I really can't complain, and the 12" sub more than compensates. I would recommend these to anyone who's looking for a very solid performing set of speakers.
