The Polk Monitor 40 utilizes a one-inch silk and polymer-composite dynamic-balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers a clear and detailed high frequency response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, as well as dual 5.25-inch bi-laminate composite dynamic-balance driver that are lightweight and stiff with good dampening for high efficiency, excellent bass and lower distortion. This unit's non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with 0.75-inch-thick baffles ensures cleaner and more lifelike sound quality. The Monitor 40 features crossovers that use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies, five-way binding-post connectors for more secure hook-up options and bi-wiring and bi-amping flexibility, and magnetic shielding for safe placement on or near TVs and video monitors without causing video distortion. This unit includes a critically-tuned flared port that minimizes port noise for good low-frequency extension with minimal distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied and rich-bass sound. They have a very rich sound and I am using them as the front speakers for my AV sourround sytem. Had to get a bracket to mount them to the wall. There is no "key hole" on the back to mount them with.

"A chain is only as strong as its weakest link"..the sound quality of speakers are only as good as the equipment they are connected to.My opinion of these speakers are based on many years of experience with a wide range of speakers and there hook up options.To get the best sound quality from these Polks speakers they must be connected using the Bi-wire approach (Read manual for hook up instructions).Secondly,they must be broken in for at lease 24hrs of playing music putting your cd player on repeat.If your equipment is made by reputable companies with a reputation for audiophile quality parts,you will be very happy with these speakers.I can't tell you how good these speakers sound because sound quality is relative,relative to the equipment you have and the type of music one listen to.Finally,these speakers provide excellent midrange and highs a quality subwoofer ie Yamaha or Velodyne is required for low frequency.

I got these open box from Circuit City for $100 each ($200 for the pair). I bought a Sony STR-DE197 200W Stereo Amplifier/Receiver for them, and hooked them up to an Advent ASW1200 100W 12" Powered Subwoofer that I bought off Amazon a while back. I'm telling you, these things are absolutely amazing. I run them off my computer with a Creative X-Fi Platinum sound card, and the sound quality and clarity is unmatched. The highs are very rich and crisp, and the mids are very strong. The lows could use some work, but considering they're bookshelf speakers, I really can't complain, and the 12" sub more than compensates. I would recommend these to anyone who's looking for a very solid performing set of speakers.
