Amazon.com Review
KLH is sure to charm with its HTA-9005 home-theater system, a nifty little five-piece speaker set. Its four satellites and center channel speaker are attractive and easy to place, and its sound is remarkably good.

Four identical two-way satellite speakers (front and rear left/right) compose the heart of the HTA-9005. Each satellite houses a four-inch woofer and 0.625-inch piezo-poly tweeter. The system's center channel employs an identical driver complement, but its tweeter sits in the speaker's center, flanked by not one but two woofers. Using identical, timbre-matched drivers is one of the keys to good surround sound--kudos to KLH for adhering to this design principle.

Articulate and well-balanced vocal reproduction is another element essential to sound reproduction for both music and movies, and this, too, is one of the HTA-9005's strengths. With stereo CDs and DVD-based movies, the midrange is clear and inherently natural. This system is not as detailed as more expensive rigs, and it does exhibit a hint of boxiness, but these are minor flaws for equipment in this price range.

In the surround mode, the center channel rivets dialogue to the screen, and front left-to-right pans (passing cars, helicopters, and the like) exhibit the seamless tonal quality we expect. The satellites do a fine job of opening up a well-defined, three-dimensional soundscape.

The HTA-9005 does not come with a subwoofer, and you will want to add one if you expect any bass response below 50 Hz--this is especially true if you like blockbuster action movies or music with a strong beat.

We enjoy both music and movies and think speakers should be suitable for both. For a surprisingly low cost, KLH's HTA-9005 delivers the goods. --Wayne Garcia

3 out of 5 stars A cheap set to get you started on.......2006-06-03

I got these as my first set of theater speakers because it was all I could afford at the time. The served me well, but there are definitely much better speakers out there. These sound muddy and flat and there is no bass response, esp. at lower volume levels. I did notice that when you turn the volume way up, they start sounding better, but since I lived in an apt. at the time, I couldn't usually do that. That being said, I defy anyone to find speakers priced at about $15 a piece that sound as good as these do. Just make sure you get a subwoofer.

Why I rated it the way I did:
If there was a 3 1/2, I would have done that. Going by sound alone, I'd give these 2 stars (I have certainly heard worse). When you factor in the price, however, you gotta' give it another star or 2.

5 out of 5 stars Very good - but get a subwoofer.......2002-06-15

Like many of the other reviewers, I bought these to get an inexpensive start to my home theater system. For the money they are entirely adequate for both movies and music. Note however, that I have them placed in a small family room and do not play at abusive volumes so I haven't really tested their limits. One thing you'll notice immediately is the weak bass response. I went out within a week and got a powered subwoofer (8 inch 100 watt Yamaha)so now I'm completely satisfied with the setup.

I also took the advice from other reviewers and replaced the cheap wire that was included with 16 gauge speaker wire.

For smaller rooms and reasonable listening volumes you really can't go wrong with these.

5 out of 5 stars What a steal!.......2002-06-01

Like everyone has said, they are great for the price, but you do need a sub to make up for the high cut off in the frequency response. I plan on buying some higher quality speakers in 5 years or so, but for now, these suit me just fine. I'm considering buying another set of them to have music through out my house instead of just in the family room...

5 out of 5 stars The cheapest thing I could find and it works just fine........2002-05-17

This was the cheapest thing I could find ANYWHERE, and the only thing I was worried about was wheather it worked. It does, and the sound quality is perfectly acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars damn good sound damn cheap price.......2002-04-15

i just brought KLH HTA-9005 speakers about a week ago and they are great! with the subwoffer i have (not a klh) it had plenty of bass on the lows and clean highs! i do agree with the assment on the wire. so thin i wouln't use it as kite string. my old front speakers were klipsch at over two hundred just for them and another eighty for the center and rear. the klh speakers blew them apart! I listen to a lot of dts and dvd audio and what a sound! and this is in a small room. i have found that most home theater amps can make regular stereo sound thin. also room size and accoustics count big time in how any speaker will sound.for my room size and money this is a best buy of all time
