Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 Multimedia Speaker System, (6 Speakers, Black)

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
After setting industry standards with the acclaimed ProMedia 5.1 personal audio system, Klipsch Audio Technologies introduces a new and enhanced version. The ProMedia Ultra 5.1 augments the performance and style of the award-winning ProMedia 5.1 with an even more impressive subwoofer, updated crossover networks, and new cosmetics on the satellites and control module. It is currently available in 120 volt and a 230 volt version will be available in 2004.

With an enclosure that is 20 percent larger, the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 subwoofer incorporates a series of refinements designed to increase efficiency for more total output, lower distortion and deepen bass extension. These improvements include a lower tuning frequency, a voice coil that is 60 percent longer and a larger, slotted port. The subwoofer is a bass-reflex type with dual 8-inch side-firing woofers and convex driver dust caps for unsurpassed high output linear bass response. The 500-watt BASH amplifier and Klipsch engineering offer high output with low distortion and effortless dynamic headroom.

The updated, two-way Ultra 5.1 satellite speakers and mid-bass drivers sport a sleeker appearance with a refined floating grille and under cone termination, which hides the speaker leads for a cleaner cone appearance. The satellites also feature an updated crossover network that enhances the higher frequencies and delivers richer tones. As with the ProMedia 5.1 satellite speakers, the Ultra 5.1 satellites include exclusive Klipsch MicroTractrix Horn tweeters that cleanly and accurately handle the high frequencies. Each satellite features a redesigned self-supporting pedestal.

The magnetically shielded center channel also features under cone termination uses the same Klipsch MicroTractrix Horn tweeter and three-inch fiber-composite cone woofer as each satellite speaker, ensuring an ideal blend and seamless driver transition.

The user-friendly control module features separate main, center, rear and subwoofer controls as well as a digital LED volume level display and an on/off or headphone listening mode switch. Unlike the original ProMedia 5.1, the Ultra module features all controls on the front panel. It also has two stereo miniplug jacks, one for headphone output and one for the convenient connection of portable audio devices and any other alternative source that uses a stereo miniplug output.

1 out of 5 stars The amp has problems........2007-05-23

I have owned the Klipsch ProMedia Ulta 5.1 Multimdedia Speaker system for two years and the amp has failed. There is a serious problem with the amps and Klipsch should address the issue. Do not buy this system unless you are willing to pay over $300.00 for a few years of great sound.

1 out of 5 stars Great sound but Amp is junk.......2007-05-03

I have had two sets of these in the past 3 years only to have the same issue.
The amp just blows up for know reason. I never ran these over half volume so there realy isnt any excuse for this.

Klipsch refuses to acknowledge they have a problem and wants you to fork over $60.00 for repair, plus $35.00 for shipping to keep having them repaired.

I finally got smart and went with a 7.1 amp and JBL speaker system.
Beware if you buy these, They do sound great but wont last long.

2 out of 5 stars High Performance, Unmatched Unreliability.......2007-03-04

I hate having to write negative reviews about something that is actually quite good. Unfortunately, this is one such review.

Let's get one thing down first: The Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 is a great sound system that produces audio quality that will floor you, especially if you were a poor schmuck like me who was upgrading from a lifetime of 2.1 speakers. Whether you're playing music or games, the sound quality is simply excellent; what's even better than the speakers is the bass, which is far stronger and more present than any other system I've ever seen.

However, these perks are only applicable when the speaker system is actually working. And chances are, you are going to be spending the majority of the time you own these speakers sending them back to the service center to get them fixed.

I feel this sentence deserves its own line: The Promedia 5.1 has an ungodly, unfathomably, unfairly, and ABSURDLY high failure rate.

On many occasions, I had the exact same problem occur each time. Without warning or cause, my sound would just cut out. It usually occured when switching between speaker/headphone mode or turning the speakers on/off on the control console. After breaking, when I pressed the power button, instead of getting the power-up "pop" in each speaker, I would just get a helpless "click" from the subwoofer, which seems to be the Promedia "Cry for Help."

This system is simply not worth $350, because you'll be spending more time waiting for them to come back from the repair center than you will actually hearing sound come out of them. This problem is specifically related to the amp in the subwoofer, which breaks seemingly at random and without any reason. I got them in December 2004, and they worked for four months. Then they broke. Upon getting them back a few weeks later, they broke not TWLEVE hours after hooking them back up. This next time, it took Klipsch *two and a half months* to get them back to me, from their date of breakage in early March until their prodigal arrival in late April on my front doorstep in the hands of a very tired-looking UPS driver. Between December 2004 and March 2007, as I'm writing this now, I have sent my Promedia out eight times to get repaired, with this repair period taking anywhere from a quick two weeks to upwards of almost three months.

I've got to hand it to Klipsch though, their repairs department is more than understanding. "Broken amp" seems to be the magical phrase on the repair phone line, because the mere mention of it usually prompts a response resembling, "Oh! Yeah, of course, as we expected. Here's what to do...." I'm guessing they've had so many calls about sudden speaker failures and broken amps that they just have a "whatever, we'll fix it with no questions asked as long as you don't ask for your money back" policy - which, eventually, I did ask for my money back, but they said it was too late to do so. This was a year after I got them, so I suggest that if you have excessive problems in the first year, call quickly and get your money back immediately.

To sum up, this is a high quality system *when it works*, which, unfortunately, is a phenomenon it rarely displays.

5 out of 5 stars By FAR the best PC speakers money can buy........2007-03-03

Klipsch is easily one of the best speaker manufacturers ever. These speakers are without a doubt the best PC speakers on the market, no others even come close. The highs are perfectly accurate with the .75" horn tweeters, and the mids are amazing due to the 3" drivers in each satellite. The bass is just unsurpassed, simply heart attack endusing, thunderous bass, with ZERO distortion or "boominess".

Another awesome feature is that they use spring loaded clips for speaker wire - so you can use high quality monster speaker wire instead of the usual RCA proprietary crap. The only PC speakers that are even close would be Cambridge Soundworks speakers, those are pretty good, but still not up to the Klipsch standard.

It simply amazes me how people can even compare the Logitech garbage to these. Logitech uses the cheapest parts possible, a boomy sub that's "loud" but not clear or tight. They use "2 in 1" trash for the satellite drivers, they use RCA speaker wire. Also, a huge fault (yes fault) of the Logitech Z-5500's is that they have a digital decoder, the only way Logitech could afford to add this was because they majorly skimped on the speaker design and quality. (oh and btw, THX certification means very little these days, just a shiny neato little way to trick the uniformed consumers)

To those uninformed Logitech users who know absolutely NOTHING about audio; do yourself a favor, check out a set of Klipsch Promedia (or Cambridge Soundworks) speakers and you will never regret that you did.

5 out of 5 stars Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 speakers are awesome!.......2007-02-01

When I recieved the box of speakers I was suprised at the size of the box.
I had only seen the 2.0 speakers at a nearby store.
I couldn't find the 5.1's in any of the stores near by.
After I had them hooked up to my computer I was blown away
by the sound that came from them.
They were really good sounding when I played a movie.
An employee of an electronics store told me that the
Klipsch speakers were as good as Boze speakers.
If they're not I can't tell the difference.
I love them and would recomend them to anyone.
Buying them online through Amazon was a good experience as well.
